No one doubts the ability of LSU players to go deep into the postseason and perhaps even challenge for a national championship the way they did against Tennessee and Connecticut a generation ago. The new powerhouses are South Carolina, Stanford, Notre Dame and Baylor but they are no better than the great squads of the early 2000’s that racked up numerous national titles. These Tigers, sans a great player like Fowles or Augustus, probably have a better chance of winning it all because they don’t have a superstar and instead depend on the firm and focused leadership of Mulkey.

The Lady Tigers have discipline; on the court and along the sidelines. You can hardly say that for the men’s team, which although they may be the best defensive squad in the land and the most athletic, they may also be the most spastic ball handlers among the top 50 squads and so devoid of a clutch outside shooter that they make numerous mistakes under both ends of the court to try and compensate.

This team needs to be taken outside and shot. If you like watching good to great athletes cavort on a basketball court, then the Tigers are your guys. If you like disciplined, organized, smooth basketball play, you’ll have to watch Auburn or Gonzaga or a number of other teams. This group just doesn’t have it and don’t expect it to come into the room anytime soon.

He was a senior who had made some dumb plays the previous few games - a reflection of not concentrating on the job at hand for an offensive tackle who was earmarked for a long and successful NFL career. I was one in the crowd as the Tigers took their pregame Walk to the stadium that autumn day. I saw the balding hulk whom I really admired but had been frustrated watching that year. As he passed, I yelled “Whitworth!” as loud as I could. He looked over and I made a move he could see of holding his offensive block steady. He smiled, did a thumbs up and continued his walk. I’m not seeking any credit, understand, but it was a pleasure to see this young man recognize that fans did care for their performance without either party being out of line. Congratulations to this West Monroe man on his sterling NFL career and his receiving the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. Payton was one of the Chicago Bears I was able to meet when they came down for their dominant win over the New England Patriots in 1986 to give him a copy of an Ed Clancy Radio Cartoon Ed and I wrote and recorded with other talented voices for the game. It was a typical great piece of radio by Clancy, one of the most humble and talented people I met in my radio career. And it was given to a player, known as “Sweetness”, whose humility and talent exceeded Clancy’s and most anyone else’s I have ever met. Andrew Whitworth deserves the honor and we are honored to have known such a fine individual, however briefly, during his LSU career.

In Mrs. Moore’s first grade classroom for their Foundational Skills, students had to listen and identify the sounds in the words that Mrs. Moore was saying out loud in order to spell the words.

They far exceeded their donation goal, collecting $5666.44, with many students offering up their personal savings. Belle Chasse Academy has been dedicated to meeting the unique educational needs of the military child in the 21st century, and has done so since opening its doors on September 5, 2002 to 600 military/ DoD dependent children in the greater New Orleans area. The Eagle Band has performed for over 30 Mardi Gras/Carnival parades, as well as other public venues since it was established in 2012. The Eagle Band has entered the Rhythm on the Route – Battle of the Bands since 2014 in competition against only high school bands; earning 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in 9 of 12 entries and over $20,000.00 in prize money.

The floats are rolling, school bands and dance teams are marching, people are screaming “Throw Me Something Mister!”. After two long years, Finally, some normality is happening! People are letting their hair down and having fun. All I can say is “Bout Time!” And the weather was awesome! Unfortunately, I had a thousands things to do and did not make any of the parades this past weekend.

Getting ready for a couple of craft shows in March. Will give you the details on that later.

Just because I didn’t make any of the parades doesn’t mean I wasn’t in the Mardi Gras spirit.I was painting away on Mardi Gras designs. The painting group I am in was challenged to make our own Gnome design. After a gentle nudge, I decided, “yea, I can do this”. I found the Gnome blank at Hobby Lobby. The design that was on it was a valentine design and the hat was pulled down over the eyes. So I sealed the wood, let it dry, sanded it, and painted over the entire piece with Deco Art Zinc. It did take 2 coats to cover the original design. Then, I got out the transfer paper and started sketching. I did get some ideas from two artists/designers that I admire. I had a lot of trial and errors, so I finally decided on one I liked. It took awhile to put everything together, then it was time to choose the colors. There are so many different colors of purple, green, and gold. Then I had to choose the shading and highlighting colors. Once I started painting, everything just seemed to fall in place. This is my finished piece. I hope you like it. I sincerely hope you all have a very Happy Mardi Gras! And above all, please be safe! Well, that’s my project for this time. ARCHIVED STORY FROM 2.28.19 I had nothing on the books for this weekend.

Friday afternoon Captain Eddie Burger of Fishvenice.com asked me if I wanted to deckhand for him Sunday.

Saturday we had a flip tide with less than a half foot tide. On top of that the wind was blowing around 15 mph with gusts. The dense fog we have had for the last 2 weeks also made this a challenging day.

It was not until about noon before he had a chance to battle a good fish. We caught a few more after that but they only wanted few for eating. We released a few more and then a potential storm and the fog pushed us back to the dock.

They really enjoyed the day on the water with me. The next day the seas were 4 to 7 feet.

There was no way we were going to stick our nose out in that stuff. Most people look for inshore - (Reds, specks, flounder, and black drum.) Or offshore (tuna, wahoo, mahi, amber jack, cobia, etc.)

There is a great near shore fishery here that is often passed up. We were first to hide out of the high seas. When I say we are going snapper fishing I am asked if they are open. With 6 guys fishing and a good supply of bait we went (Catching) this was the biggest red snapper we caught. The smallest was about 6 inches long. Due to us fishing in shallow water the ones we caught were all returned unharmed. I never even touched the fish. Eddie and I used fish dehookers which are quicker and easier on both us and the fish.

We caught around 200 hundred red snapper.

Around 25 trigger fish that also went back as well as 7 of these tiny soap fish. We found a few hardheaded cats. As you can see we had to work hard releasing all these just to b put some good fish in the box.

We did quite well but worked very hard for our box of fish. We ended up with 44 lane snapper and 6 mangrove snapper giving us a total of 50 of them. The rest of the catch was reddish, black drum, croaker, ruby lipped grunt, and white trout. To say we had a good day is an under statement.

Words to GREAUX by GET READY FOR THE SPRING GARDEN SEASON As springtime approaches, gardeners start venturing out into the landscape to start pruning, planting, weeding, and fertilizing. Before we get down to the details about what to do in the spring garden, it is important to walk through the yard and make observations. This is the first part of the planning process. Examine all the plants in your Will Afton landscape and around your home. Azaleas should be blooming, roses should responding to their Valentine’s Day prune, and lawns should be slowly waking up by turning green in patches. Examine everything, take notes, and review any notes from last year.

As you address the same issues in certain area, evaluate your approach and make changes if necessary. Using this information, it’s easy to start putting together an effective plan to manage your landscaping chores and get the most out of your plantings.

Some folks like to review a bullet list to make sure they are addressing popular concerns. Refer to the checklist below for recommendations on things to do in the southern landscape during the month of March.

Gardening To-Do List for March • Prune and dead head cool season bedding plants such as pansies, snapdragons, petunias, and violas. These plants will still look good and bloom throughout the month of March. Wait until April to switch out them out with warm season bedding plant options.

• Fertilize spring flowering bulbs while leaves are still good and green. After flowering, the leaves produce sugars (photosynthesis) and stores it in the underground bulb for use in the next season when flowering. Proper care now will ensure success in following years.

• Divide and transplant perennial herbs and flowers. Divide flowering perennials like black-eyed Susan and purple coneflower when clumps start to take over their allotted space in a flowerbed. Both plants are resilient and can be divided with a shovel. Replant into new areas or plant it pots to give to family and friends.

• Get ready to plant spring vegetables as soon as cool weather is gone. Gardeners in more northern areas will wait slightly longer. Vegetable plants have a better chance at producing bigger yields when planted early in the season. Vegetables to consider include bell peppers, cucumbers, hot peppers, tomatoes, squash, and zucchini. It also provides information on recommended varieties to use in your garden.

• Watch landscape trees as they start to produce leaves this month. A healthy tree will start leafing out throughout the canopy at about the same time. When sections or different branches within the canopy leaf out significantly later than others, you can tell that the tree is stressed. Several different environmental conditions can cause problem with our trees.

Compacted soil in the root zone is one of the major issues. Other issues include poor surface drainage, physical root damage from digging near the tree, and originally being planted too low in the ground.

• Do not fertilize the lawn just yet. Allow the warm-season turfgrass to completely green up before any applications of fertilizer. Take a soil sample now to learn which fertilizer to use later next month. Control any weed issues now while you wait. Selective herbicides can be applied over the top of the lawn to control most broadleaf weed issues.

• Be on the lookout for large (brown) patch disease in the lawn, especially if wet weather is expected in the extended forecast. Large patch disease is very problematic during the spring and fall. Damage appears as circles of yellow grass that turn brown over a short period of time. Look to apply a fungicide to help prevent the spread of this disease. Look for lawn fungicides that contain propiconazole, myclobutanil, or azoxystrobin as the active ingredient.

If a follow up treatment is needed, then use a different active ingredient on the second round.

Some of your pet’s health symptoms are extremely noticeable but other health issues aren’t so easy to spot. Breed, size, genetics, nutrition, and environmental factors all play a vital role in the overall health and longevity of your pet.

One thing that consistently prolongs the health and well-being of your pet is preventative health care through annual visits to the vet and one option that your vet will often want to discuss with you is regular bloodwork to watch for changes in your pet’s vital organ systems. Early detection of diseases is crucial in early medical intervention that can prolong your pet’s life and increase the quality of your animal’s health.

Your vet may ask you if you would like to send out blood work, which usually consists of a CBC (complete blood count) and Chemistry panel. A CBC for dogs identifies and quantifies white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets in the blood. This includes analyzing the cells for health and functionality. This helpful information is vital in learning more about your dog’s immune system. Chemistry panels check the status of internal organ system, namely the liver and kidney functions as well as another vital internal processes.

While your vet may want to send off bloodwork for more specific reasons, these commonly run blood panels provide vital information about your pet’s internal systems. It also provides your Vet with baseline information so that they can watch for changes over the course of your pet’s life. While doing bloodwork is a great idea at any point in your fur babies’ life, it is especially important to start monitoring their bloodwork as your pets grow older. These tests can help keep your pet happy and healthy as they get older and more silver in the face!

In the animal world we consider a seven-year-old pet to be the special golden years when your pet is the best companion in the world. If you haven’t begun adding bloodwork to your annual visits to the vet before then, it is suggested that when they become seven, you make sure you have bloodwork included in their annual visits so we can provide them with the best care possible as they enter their silver years.
