We entered 2021 with our basic American freedoms under attack by clowns to the left and jokers to the right and yes, most of us are stuck in the middle, huddling within the pages of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It takes a strong personal constitution to battle this Bull of Wrongs being dished out by the extremists on the fringes of both political parties and the amateur and professional agitators who are trying to enforce George Orwell’s 1984 here in 2021.

I don’t know where this country is headed over the next several years but the implementation of masks is a Freudian signal to the average person that a myriad group of masked elitists, politicians, super rich, lobbyists and others are hell-bent on robbing us of what made this country great in the first place. America has always been great, MAGA fans, and it’s also been kind, tolerant and generous tp a fault. But it will be the average American’s fault if they let this bunch of condescending cowards continue to write on their personal freedom and civil rights blackboard. You don’t need some so-called leader to tell you the course of action to take; your soul and heart and the goodness within your body will let you know that the right thing is not to hate or become violent but to become purposeful and educated. If the German, Chinese and Russian cultures can survive the horrific changes they endured at different times during the past one hundred years, the U.S. can do the same. Because the American will and psyche is a lot more resilient and adaptive than you may give it credit for.

Go forth and adapt. Keep safe from the Covid-19 (yes, it’s real - and no, I don’t have a chip up my nose). Read Desiderata and your faith’s Holy books. Trust your neighbors, even though they don’t agree with you. Stay safe, alert and positive .Spring will be here soon.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LWFC Passes a Notice Of Intent to Restrict All Oyster Harvest On Four Proposed Broodstock Reefs Today, the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission passed a Notice of Intent (NOI) to add four proposed recreational oyster broodstock reefs to Louisiana Administrative Code (LAC) 76:VII.537, which restricts all oyster harvest on reefs listed under that rule. The Department plans to construct all four reefs using oyster cultch material by summer of this year. The reefs would join the approximately 33 reefs currently listed under the rule. All four proposed reefs would be constructed within 10-acre plots inside Public Oyster Areas in the coastal waters of Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes at Petit Pass, Karako Bay, Lake Machias, and Mozambique Point. These 4 reefs will be approximately 2-acres, but oyster harvest, commercial and recreational, will be prohibited from the entire 10-acre plot. The four 10-acre plots to be included under LAC 76:VII.537 will only ban oyster harvest on 40 of the more than 900,000 acres of public oyster areas located east of the Mississippi River. The oyster harvest prohibition is intended to be permanent.

The objective of the brood reefs is to establish protected oyster reef complexes that can help populate nearby public oyster areas where harvest is not prohibited by rule. Construction costs will be paid through federal Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) funds which are marked for supporting oyster restoration efforts to offset impacts from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. These four reefs will be among the first projects included in the Department’s “Louisiana Oyster Management and Rehabilitation Strategic Plan” to be initiated. The reefs are expected to provide finfish habitat and, as such, will be open to finfish anglers.

Those defending the Mahomes Castle of Greatness need to look northwest towards the Emerald City, where a far greater athlete and winner of the Walter Payton Man of the Year award plays his football. You want intelligence, leadership, athletic ability, humility and a will to win? How has this crazy weather been treating you? I would like a few more days of cold weather. The 40’s would be nice. I haven’t even had a chance to complain about the cold weather yet. Oh Well.....

Remember awhile back I had told everyone I was taking online painting classes. Well, back in Nov., or maybe early Dec., I found these unpainted wooden snowmen at Target, that we were told about. And knowing me, I got a couple of them because I would have to paint one for my daughter, Kelly. I am sorry now that I didn’t get a couple more.

I love these and they were so much fun to work with.

The design is by Laurie Speltz painted by me.

I did change the embellishments though.

I decided to add the valentine lights. Of course I used Deco Americana paints to do this design. I base coated the snowmen with Snow White, the hat is Lamp Black, the hearts and letters are Santa Red. Tied a sheer red ribbon around his neck and added the lights. I kinda like him! He will have an honorary place at my house until after Valentine’s Day. Hope you like it.

Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.

Let the season begin!

I had some things done to my boat and had to strip it down almost completely so i could put a few coats of gelcoat on the inside. I added a seat behind the leaning post. I also had a new skeg welded to the motor. Wonder how long that will last.

Every thing checked out so it was time to put some blood on it.

I invited Joe to do some scouting with me. My customer for the next day has been here for a few days and was waiting for the rest of his family to show up that evening. I told him not to expect much but he was welcome to hop aboard. We went about 100 feet from the launch and started getting bites. Joe had 3 undersize redfish right off.

It looked like we were being taught a fishing lesson by old Joe. There was action but only one person was having fun.

Eventually Harold got in the action. He caught his first sheepshead ever. At least we were catching although everything was small.He finally got into the 14 to 15 1/2 inch reds. They were feeding well. The tails were lit up blue.

Even though we had a good bite the goal was to scout the west side and get an idea what is available for the future as well as any important changes in the area such as silted in areas or new sand bars.

These 2 guys came in together. The black drum was over 16 inches so it was invited to join us for supper in the evening. The redfish was loaded with spots on both sides. It was a beautiful fish that will make someone happy in the future. It was under the 16 inch minimum so it was released. These redfish grow an inch a month until they reach about 16 inches then the growth rate slows down.

I even got into the action putting this black drum in the box. We kept moving around looking for something to reward us for our efforts. I covered from Hospital bay in Boothville all the way north to Port Sulphur.

Our trophy of the day was a good fat sheepshead. Although Harold thought the fish was small, this creature actually ran right past the boat then started pulling drag. The fish decided to take a run around the boat. I thought he had our first keeper red until I got a glimps of it. Just a stubborn sheepshead. We ended our day with 8 fish in the box and ended up releasing the small one in the lower right. It was still alive so I gave it my blessing and i formed the fish it was it’s “lucky day”. One last picture of the stud sheepshead. A trophy in anybody’s books.

On the offshore scene we had some bragging rights gained this week by Captain Eddie Burger of Fish Venice Charters with this 96 pound wahoo. And Captsin Scott. Leger of Paradise Outfitters with a 230 pound yellowfin tuna. Congratulations to both captains and the companies they represent. Life is Good!

Carrots are one of the more popular vegetables in the home garden.

They have been captivating humans since the 10th century as carrot cultivation began in Central Asia. Afghanistan is considered the point of origin due to the amount of wild type carrot varieties seen in the region. By the 11th century, purple and yellow carrots made their way to westward to Europe. Carrots made their way east into India and China during the 13th and 14th centuries and then further into Japan by the 17th century. It is during this same time that carrots were introduced into the United States.

Carrots belong to the plant family, Apiaceae, which includes many familiar plants like celery and parsnips. Members of this family are known for their aromatic flavor characteristics. Several common herbs like parsley, cilantro/coriander, cumin, and dill also belong to this family. Most of the vegetable and herb plants from Apaiceae have had medicinal attributes. One thing that you will notice with most of the species within this group is that they all have flowering structures called umbels, a flower cluster with stalks of equal length come from a common center and form a flat or curved surface (umbrella-like). They are cold hardy and work well in both spring and fall gardens in the Southeast US. Carrots are a root crop and seeded directly into the garden. Compacted soils aren’t conducive with optimum carrot production as they produce carrots with stubby and deformed roots.

Incorporate organic matter and till deeply to reduce the occurrence. Use fresh carrot seeds in the garden to maximize germination. Crowding plants will slow down overall plant growth and produce small roots. Sow seeds in a row, aiming for a couple seeds every 1-2 inches, and 12 inches between rows. Once seed has germinated go back and thin carrots so that you have one seedling every 1-2 inches.

The optimum soil pH range for carrots is between 6 and 7. Prior to starting a crop, submit a soil sample to determine current soil pH status along with nutrient availability. Lime is a soil amendment that is used to raise soil pH and sulfur can be used to lower it. Refer to the soil analysis to determine phosphorous and potassium concentrations. Shop different fertilizer via the fertilizer analysis of the product. Nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and potassium (K) are always displayed in that order and are presented as a percentage by weight. You should be familiar with the typical fertilizers like 8-8-8 or 8-24-24. There are several other options available. The key is to determine what elements are deficient and then choose a fertilizer product to supply what the soil cannot.

Carrots are generally easy to grow. Feel confident in trying a variety that appeals to you.

However, the LSU AgCenter has several variety recommendations for those looking to harvest a bumper crop. The cultivar Danvers 126 is historically the industry standard when it comes to orange carrots. It is an “open-pollinated” variety, meaning that you can allow some of the plants to flower and produce seed, where it can be saved to start a crop of Danvers 126 in the next season. Choctaw, Apache, Enterprise, and Maverick are recommended hybrid varieties of orange carrots. In a 2016 LSU AgCenter variety trial study, Sugar Snax (Johnny’s Selected Seed) was the top performing orange variety. Yellow Bunch (Johnny’s Selected Seed) was the top performing yellow carrot and Deep Purple (Johnny’s Selected Seed) was the top performing purple carrot.

Several carrot varieties were planted at three different farm locations. These were the standouts.

The LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana Vegetable Production Guide recommends sowing carrot seed anywhere between January 1 and March 15 for South Louisiana. Carrots can be harvested at any size. You can spread out a harvest with a successive planting, multiple plantings spread out over weeks so that the crop is not ready at once. Look to plant carrots in your vegetable garden this year!

Why treating your pet’s skin issues is so Important One of the most common medical issues we see in animals at the Louisiana SPCA is skin diseases. This type of illness is not only preventable but can save you a ton of money by treating it early.

Dog skin conditions are unfortunately all too common. Uncomfortable allergic reactions can cause scratching, licking, chewing, and general unrest. Left untreated, they often lead to hair loss and painful lesions, referred to as hot spots, that become infected without proper care.

Environmental factors such as grasses, dust, mold, pollen, mildew, and other airborne allergens might also make your pet itchy and uncomfortable Food allergies are less common, but when food allergies do occur, the condition is usually caused by specific protein in the food. Common food-causing allergies are beef, chicken, lamb, pork and wheat. Resolution to these types of allergies can be explored by talking to your veterinarian and may result in a food trial in which you try a different type of food to try to identify the allergy causing ingredient in your pet’s food. Food trials may also lead to putting your pet on a prescription diet.

Dogs can also develop an allergic reaction to flea bites, which is an immune response to flea saliva known as parasitic dermatitis. This can cause excessive itching, inflammation, and hair loss. While flea allergies are the most common cause of ectoparasitic allergies, tick bites can also trigger a similar reaction in dogs. Ticks can also carry a wide variety of other diseases, so making sure your pet is on proper flea and tick prevention is a key component to your pet’s health. Other types of parasitic infections can be caused by skin reactions from various types of mites, such as demodex or scabies. These conditions must be diagnosed and treated by your veterinarian as some forms of mange and mite infections can be spread to humans and other pets.

Pets can also develop skin infections caused by bacterial, fungal, or yeast infections. One common cause is fungi commonly known as “ring worm”. These fungi can be contagious to other pets and humans and require topical and sometimes oral medications provided by a veterinarian to resolve. Yeast infections are often secondary to other forms of allergic dermatitis and often found as the core cause of ear infections along with other bacterium. Other causes of skin infections and alopecia can be a result of an internal disease processes that may require further lab work and/ or blood work to properly diagnose.
