So…except for being the birthing place of a monstrous F-5 tornado on April 4th, 1974, there’s not much to see here, kids.

The Queen City on the Ohio River, the beginning of the Mason-Dixon Line between Kentucky and Ohio, the brick and stone edifices of the city as southern hillbilly meets granite and iron. St. Louis without a crappy bridge over a major river. Little sizzle, less steak, mostly hamburger.

Except now. Except that a southeast Ohio kid from a poverty-infused area in a hardscrabble region, whose father left the relative greenness of northeast Mississippi nearly 50 years ago to play corner at Nebraska for his old high school coach, is now the face of “NATTI”, as we will coolly call it from now on. Because the nattiest dude to walk its streets in many a year and his just-as-decorated former LSU teammate are on the cusp of bringing this River City its first Music Men. And the sounds of frustrated Bungle fans (that’s right, the Bunglin’ Bengals of the AFC, the WeatherTech mats of professional football for the past 33 years), are ready to claim their first major sports title since Sparky Anderson and Pete Rose commanded Riverfront Stadium in the ’70’s.

Joe Burrow may be the most beloved professional sports figure to capture a national psyche since Jesse Owens in 1936. All this kid has done is rewritten college passing records and has taken his pay-to-play team to the pinnacle of success in his first full season as a pro. “Protected” by an offensive line that would make a Joe Biden Border Patrol team seem like the ultimate lockdown security force in history, Burrow has merely led his team over a gambling bunch of Raiders, an overrated Tennessee Titan squad and a budding dynasty team in the Kansas City Chiefs….the last two on the road, all with drama, two games which cast them as underdogs. Now they are gathered for a great war against the Nomad Rams, a team whose identity can’t even be safeguarded by LifeLock, a team who spent money like a drunken sailor or a Democratic politician to build a “gotta win now” team. It’s stars are legit; they include the only newbie I would root for in former LSU Tiger and Cincinnati Bengal left tackle Andrew Whitworth, the oldest offensive tackle in the game. But they are a Los Angeles team and that means any available Super Bowl tickets will go to fans of the visitors. It was that way when I played high school ball in L.A. 60 years ago and it remains the same “meh” pro football attitude because of L.A.’s wishy-washy football culture, believe it or not.

Joining Burrow is Ja Marr Chase, the Biletnikoff winner as the nation’s top receiver in 2019, the Year Of The Great LSU Saga, when everything went perfectly. They lead an offense that has a come-from-behind attitude as good as any in the NFL. They are a 4 and a half point underdog to the Rams, who now house themselves in Inglewood, one of more than 100 small communities surrounding LA-LA-Land and hard by Hollywood. But the Rams don’t deserve a Hollywood finish; Cincinnati does. The Rams are like most starstruck people in the area; they have big dreams and big local housing and food expenses trying to make the Big Time. The Rams made the Big Time once since Korea and like the movie star discovered in a local drugstore, it took a grocery store clerk to lead those Rams to an improbable Super Bowl victory some 20-odd years ago. Thanks, Kurt Warner.

The sports books may favor the Rams but the rest of the sports nation favors the Bengals. They’ve already done the impossible by beating the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead where crowd noise and crowd sentiments are all in the home team’s favor. The last true Ram fan was found hunkered down with the last Japanese World War II soldier years ago. No one there really cares. The first Super Bowl was held there in 1967 and tickets for the game had to be left on car windshields to try and get enough fans into the Coliseum to watch the Packers destroy the Kansas City Chiefs. If it weren’t for Corporate America, the same practice would probably have to be used to get enough Los Angelenos to shuffle into SOFI Stadium instead of the venerable Coliseum between USC, the Harbor Freeway and Manual Arts High School. There’s simply too many other, more rewarding things to do in the Basin than watch an NFL football team constructed with spending bucks usually reserved for the Yankees and Dodgers’ front offices. And like those teams, the results are “meh” as well. Geaux, Natti Guys!!….Burrow, Chase and company. Avenge your two losses from the closest Super Bowl contests the 49ers had in the ’80’s and ’90’s, The nation will rejoice, Los Angeles will merely commute. Meh.

Valentine’s Day is quickly arriving. Have you got those gifts yet for all your Sweethearts? The candy aisles at the store were full of sweet treats and cute gifts when I had ventured there at the beginning of the month. I am sure they must have been picked over quite a bit by now. I bet you have seen the cute stuffed Valentine Gnomes in some stores. They are just too adorable!

I have been busy painting Valentine Gnomes. Some to wear as cute little pins, some as refrigerator magnets, some to stand on a table or desk, and one to grace your front door (which I am still working on). The smaller ones, with the super long beards are so much fun to paint! I still have quite a few of those to paint as I just received the wood blanks on Friday. We are bringing them to the nursing home to add a little cheer and let the residents know that they are thought of. Some of those folks have no one to go and visit with them because their families are too far away or they have no one. This is my way of saying, “you are important”. I know I really miss my loved ones that are no longer here.

The larger Gnome, I plan on finishing within the next couple of days. He does have quite a bit of shading on him. I have to add his eyes, eye brows, lashes to his face, Add some hearts and dots to the hat. I have a filigree heart that I plan on painting and attaching to the heart that he is holding. Fix the mistakes on his shoes. I think I may change the color of his shoes also. Then, of course, I will need to shade and highlight those where necessary. I think he will be pretty cute when done. I found this cut out at Hobby Lobby. The original pattern printed on the wood did not have a face. The hat came down and covered it. We just opened up that area a bit. I think he will be pretty cute. I will have some of the smaller Gnomes available, so if you are interested in one as a pin or magnet, email me and you will be able to choose your own colors. I am making some of these for Easter and St. Paddy’s Day also. Well that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.......I don’t know. But I know it will be fun! Who is included in the Settlement?

The Class includes anyone who (1) established and initially funded a prepaid account through GTL’s automated telephone system (also called interactive-voice-response or IVR) and (2) had a positive account balance that was reduced to $0.00 due to account inactivity for 180 days or less from April 3, 2011, until October 6, 2021.

What does the Settlement provide?

GTL will provide up to $67 million that will pay (1) credits/refunds to eligible Class Members, (2) the costs of notice and administration, (3) attorneys’ fees and costs, and (4) special service payments to Class Representatives. GTL has also agreed to change its Inactivity Policy to benefit Class Members and others. Additional details are in the Settlement Agreement available on the website.

How can I get a payment?

If you have an active GTL AdvancePay account at the time the Settlement is finally approved in mid to late 2022, you will receive an automatic credit to your account. If you have or will have an inactive GTL AdvancePay account at the time the Settlement is approved, you need to submit a Claim Form online or by mail by June 14, 2022 to receive a refund. If you are not sure you will continue to use your GTL AdvancePay account through 2022, you should file a claim. Anyone who has both active and inactive GTL AdvancePay accounts will receive an automatic credit on the active account but will need to file a claim for their inactive account(s) to get a refund.

GTL will credit or refund 100% of the amount that GTL retained from your account due to inactivity.

Payments to former customers may be reduced if the total credits/refunds exceed the available Settlement fund.

What are my rights?

Even if you do nothing, you will be bound by the Court’s decisions. Former GTL customers who do nothing will receive no refund (unless they reactivate their account within two years of final approval and funds remain available, in which case they may be eligible to receive a credit). If you want to keep your right to sue GTL yourself, you must exclude yourself from the Settlement by April 15, 2022. If you stay in the Settlement but do not agree with the terms, you may object to it by April 15, 2022.

The Court will hold a hearing on August 26, 2022 to consider whether to approve the Settlement, a request for attorneys’ fees and costs up to $18,675,000, and special service payments of $25,000. You or your lawyer may appear and speak at the hearing at your own expense.

Let the season begin!

I had some things done to my boat and had to strip it down almost completely so i could put a few coats of gelcoat on the inside. I added a seat behind the leaning post. I also had a new skeg welded to the motor. Wonder how long that will last.

Every thing checked out so it was time to put some blood on it.

I invited Joe to do some scouting with me. My customer for the next day has been here for a few days and was waiting for the rest of his family to show up that evening. I told him not to expect much but he was welcome to hop aboard. We went about 100 feet from the launch and started getting bites. Joe had 3 undersize redfish right off.

It looked like we were being taught a fishing lesson by old Joe. There was action but only one person was having fun.

Eventually Harold got in the action. He caught his first sheepshead ever. At least we were catching although everything was small.He finally got into the 14 to 15 1/2 inch reds. They were feeding well. The tails were lit up blue.

Even though we had a good bite the goal was to scout the west side and get an idea what is available for the future as well as any important changes in the area such as silted in areas or new sand bars.

These 2 guys came in together. The black drum was over 16 inches so it was invited to join us for supper in the evening. The redfish was loaded with spots on both sides. It was a beautiful fish that will make someone happy in the future. It was under the 16 inch minimum so it was released. These redfish grow an inch a month until they reach about 16 inches then the growth rate slows down.

I even got into the action putting this black drum in the box. We kept moving around looking for something to reward us for our efforts. I covered from Hospital bay in Boothville all the way north to Port sulphur.

Our trophy of the day was a good fat sheepshead. Although Harold thought the fish was small, this creature actually ran right past the boat then started pulling drag. The fish decided to take a run around the boat. I thought he had our first keeper red until I got a glimps of it. Just a stubborn sheepshead. We ended our day with 8 fish in the box and ended up releasing the small one in the lower right. It was still alive so I gave it my blessing and i formed the fish it was it’s “lucky day”. One last picture of the stud sheepshead. A trophy in anybody’s books.

On the offshore scene we had some bragging rights gained this week by Captain Eddie Burger of Fish Venice Charters with this 96 pound wahoo. And Captsin Scott. Leger of Paradise Outfitters with a 230 pound yellowfin tuna. Congratulations to both captains and the companies they represent. Life is Good!

Words to GREAUX by LATE WINTER PRUNING SEASON GETS UNDERWAY We have finally made it to the month of February. Along with more rains, cloudy weather, cold fronts, and low temps! When I think of February, my mind immediately jumps to pruning trees and shrubs prior to the spring green-up period to prepare them for the oncoming season.

Will Afton Deciduous trees, fruit trees, and rose bushes are some of the common plants that we typically prune during the late winter. You can this this for most of our summer blooming landscape plants. Spring blooming plants would be pruned after they finish flowering.

Continue reading for more specific information on pruning landscape plants later this month.

Deciduous and Fruit Tree Pruning • Deciduous trees such as crapemyrtles and shade trees along with fruit trees like apples, peaches and citrus should all be pruned this month.

• On young shade trees remove any damaged limbs. If the top has been broken, be sure to prune in such a way that the tree will produce and maintain one central leader branch.

• Fruit trees such as apples, peaches, plums, nectarines should be pruned to be kept lower to the ground. Always start to remove dead branches. Thin the canopy to allow for good air movement. Commercial growers like to prune an “open center”. They will remove the central leader and allow 3-4 trunks to take over, leaving the middle open to allow for greater light penetration.

• Citrus trees don’t require much but I would suggest removing any branch that grows straight down towards the ground. You can also remove branches that grow straight up to control the height of the plant.

Rose Care and Maintenance • Valentine’s Day, February 14, is our historic calendar reminder to get out and prune your rose bushes.

• For shrub roses use hedge sheers to remove two-thirds of the bush. Don’t be hesitant, good healthy plants will respond well to this type of pruning.

• For hybrid tea roses and other hybridized types use selective cuts with hand pruners to remove two-thirds of the plant. Start by locating the main supporting canes and remove about half to two-thirds of the previous season’s growth. Always cut on an angle right above a node, being careful to damage the node. Now, remove any branch that grows back into the bush from wherever it originated. Your bush may be look butchered but believe me it will appreciate it later!

• Beginning early to mid-March, apply fertilizer to your rose bushes. Different fertilizers will provide nutrients over various amounts of time. Be sure to read the label for application instructions and frequency.

• For those growing hybrid tea roses, start thinking about a fungicide spray schedule.

Chlorothalonil and propiconazole are both listed to control black spot-on roses and will be marketed as general garden fungicides. Look to spray as new foliage grows and develops.

For humans and pets alike, annual exams can be a key part to staying healthy. From ensuring your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations to checking for heartworms, an annual exam is vital to maintaining your pet’s health and preventing future issues.

For many pet owners, an annual exam can seem like an unnecessary trip for a healthy pet that can cause un-needed anxiety and stress, but the reality is that taking your pet to the vet yearly will help keep them safe from parasites and heartworms, can help identify diseases that you may not be able to see and will check that your pet has all the necessary vaccinations needed to keep them healthy. Although your pet may appear completely healthy, an annual exam will ensure that there are no underlying problems and that your dog or cat stays healthy until their next checkup.

Did you know that each parish has their own laws in place around the vaccinations that are required for your pet to have? One vaccine that every parish in the state requires is the rabies vaccine. This crucial vaccine can be given during your pet’s annual exam, making it another reason that annual wellness visits can be so vital. For dogs, vaccinations against distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza and adenovirus, as well as the bacteria Bordetella are considered core vaccinations. For cats, core vaccines are feline herpes virus, calicivirus and panleukopenia.

Depending on location and lifestyle, other vaccinations may be strongly recommended including vaccinations against leptospirosis, canine influenza, Feline Leukemia virus and others. An annual appointment also allows your veterinarian to discuss your pet’s lifestyle and habits to develop the best vaccine protocol to protect them from illnesses.

Equally as important as vaccines is the actual physical examination. Your vet will likely ask you questions about how your pet has been doing, if there are changes in their behavior, eating, or bathroom habits, or if you have noticed any physical changes. During the physical exam your veterinarian will check for signs of disease that may not be readily apparent to you. They can address issues such as weight gain or loss, dental disease, skin health and discuss how to prevent certain problems such as periodontal disease or obesity.

Annual wellness exams are critical in preventing disease in your pet. Keep your pet healthy this year and contact your veterinarian to make their appointment. It may be your pet’s least favorite day of the year, but it’s undoubtedly the most important one.
