“A FLING TO BOUTTE IS A JOY FOREVER” (AND OTHER NEW YEARS THOUGHTS)

Like the Reeses Candy announcer, “not sorry” for that bad pun leading off this column. At my age, I really don’t care if it makes you groan or not. It’s my tribute to Kayshon Boutte heretofore a relatively unknown freshman receiver for the LSU Tigers. I knew who he was because freshmen receivers have done a lot for the Tigers in the past ten seasons and this guy bided his time until the injuries and the selfish depleted the LSU wideouts and then….boom! Not only the best game of the year for a receiver this year but ever in the SEC and one of the greatest in college football history. No LSU receiver had numbers close to Boutte in any one game last year and although Boutte didn’t have the reputation of a Ja’Marr Chase or a Terrance Marshall Junior, he stuck it out and had a phenomenal game against Ole Miss.

Now the bloodletting has started and one of my favorites, Bo Pelini, has probably coached his last high profile assignment following the collapse of the Tigers’ defense in 2020. It wasn’t all Pelini’s fault but other coaches either got their walking papers or have transitioned into an advisory position for 2021, including Steve Ensminger. Coach O will have to replace both his coordinators and Orgeron’s last choice of Scott Lineman was a bad reach, which I pointed out when it happened. Orgeron’s Cajun luck is wearing a bit thin in Tigertown and he’d better forgo his Rolodex for the next hires and find a gem like Auburn did in replacing Gus Malzahn last week as head coach. orgeron needs a comer, not a bummer, and those who inhabited Pete Carroll’s USC staff along with Orgeron are spoken for or worn out.

Everyone is thrilled that 2020 will only be referred to as a visionary perfection standard after this weekend and not the most miserable year in American history since World War II. Meanwhile, the Donald Trump drama continues as it plays into its third month.

We need to thank the President for Operation Warp Speed, judicial appointments and a few other nonpolitical moves that actually made sense in the past four years. But we need to realize that Trump will always be a victim of his personality and never realized the magnitude of what the office of POTUS really should reflect. No one is thrilled over this election and the Vegas odds should be posted soon on how much time Joe Biden has in the Oval Office until his health or others’ ambition drive him out of there. But let’s play nice for the time being (even Hillary did so in 2016) and not take language courses in how to say “comrade” in both Russian and Chinese. This country has a lot more backbone than the hand-wringers give it credit for and I still believe we are the product of a benign God and an ambitious, fair-minded and loving citizenry. Take it to the bank for 2021 and let’s hope we never see another ten months like the ones we just experienced.

As for our operations, this is Year 30 coming in for our print products. We’ve had a number of publications, including the reformatted Metro Edition and the successor to the 31-year old Penny Pincher along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We’ve outlasted most of our contemporaries and many published evergreens like the Sun Herald, which shows very little life these days. John Georges did save daily print in Southeast Louisiana but the Sun Herald doesn’t seem to have a champion. I’m not thrilled about this turn of events but it does prove that some print coasted when they should have been pushing and now their days are numbered. A world without print or brick and mortar shopping is not a world where I would feel comfortable and those embracing both are not only lazy but ignorant of the dynamics of human interplay and relationships. You can’t vacation or confide with your electronic devices and the resulting world will eventually be one of boredom, lack of challenges and stifling routine. As I encourage our leaders to do the same, reach out to a flesh and blood neighbor, fellow worker or local resident and find out how relationships used to be forged.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Agents Cite Three Men for Commercial Crabbing Violations in Violet Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited three subjects for alleged commercial crabbing violations in St. Bernard Parish on Dec. 15.

Agents cited Philippe R. Despointes, 52, of Madisonville, for failing to maintain records. Agents also cited Lee R. Gonzales III, 45, of Violet, and Ricky P Boudoin III, 22, of St. Bernard, for failing to complete trip tickets and failing to mark crab containers.

Agents were doing a routine seafood compliance check at a commercial seafood business in Violet when they found 64 unmarked blue crab crates. After further investigation, agents learned that Gonzales and Boudoin dropped the crabs off at the business and did not fill out any trip tickets or mark the crab containers. Despointes also didn’t have any record of receiving the crabs.

Agents seized the live blue crabs and returned them to the water.

Failing to maintain records, failing to complete trip tickets and failing to mark crab containers brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail for each offense.

Agents participating in the case are Sgt. David Sanford and Sgt. Ezekiel Talbert Jr.

Christmas. I know it was really a different kind of Christmas for a lot of people. I am really tired of all this covid stuff. What really upsets me is the fact that some families were unable to visit with loved ones who may not be here for next Christmas.

And that really upsets me.

I have some very strong feelings about all this, as I am sure you do also.

I have been trying desperately to keep myself occupied and focused. But needless to say it just has not been working. I have only 7 ornaments on my pencil Christmas tree and whenever I remembered I would put the lights on. But, on the bright side of things I finished the GingerBread Men I was working on. This is a design by Chris Haugh. I really like this piece because it is free standing and of course adorable! Looking for a fun new way to come up with a different new year’s resolution this time around? Why stick with the same old lines about starting a diet that will barely make it out of January or a new commitment to buying a gym membership that will never get used?

Maybe it’s time to think of something outside the box or maybe something in the soil? Take a look at the following resolutions that deal with gardening. You might be surprised at some of the unintended results.

• Grow your own flower or vegetable transplants. By ordering seeds from mail order companies and online stores you will get a better selection of varieties instead on relying on what retail stores bring. Plant propagation by seed can also help your pocket book out too because you will be eliminating the middleman and becoming the grower yourself.

• Eat healthier by growing your own fruit and vegetables. Citrus, blueberries, figs, and many other fruits can easily be grown in the back yard. The Gulf South has a long growing season where certain vegetables can be planted throughout the calendar year. Get a copy of the Louisiana Vegetable Production Guide and The Louisiana Home Orchard publication from your local extension office to begin the process of exploring what can be done in your home garden or backyard orchard.

• Do your part as a home owner to protect the environment. Fertilize according to a soil sample analysis. Avoid adding nutrients which are already abundant in the soil, which may also help save money. Learn to properly identify a pest and search for cultural and biological solutions to control.

• Promote responsible water use through proper irrigation methods. Let watering systems run for a longer period of time but not as often. Use mulch to help with soil hold onto water for longer. It will keep you from watering all the time. Use soaker hoses when able to. Classic lawn sprinkler can be quite inefficient, especially when the wind blows.

• Visit public gardens and green spaces to get garden design ideas. New Orleans Botanical Gardens, Longue Vue House and Gardens, and City Park offer some beautiful scenery on the south shore but they are many other places to look as well too. Triangle Park in Covington is landscaped quite nicely and the city of Mandeville has installed a native wildflower planting in the neutral ground near East Causeway Approach and Hwy 190.

• Recycle nutrients and replenish soil using homemade compost. Organic substances are broken down into smaller pieces via a slew of microorganisms that we can’t even see with our own eyes. These microorganisms are the driving force behind both natural decomposition and compost piles found in conjunction with home gardens. Start recycling all of your vegetable and fruit scraps from the kitchen. Add them to brown material such as fallen leaves, shredded wood chips, or shredded newspaper. These are just the tip of the iceberg. Once you get some success here, look to see what else can be included in the compost pile.
