TIGER, TIGER, BURNING DIMLY

As we bid the shortest days of the year goodbye and look forward to a new year and perhaps a return to some type of modern-day normalcy in Washington and the corporate boardrooms of America, it is also time to enjoy the budding successes of LSU’s three brightest programs: men’s and women’s basketball and Tiger baseball. Okay, four programs with Lady Tiger softball and there’s always the spring permutations of the school’s longest tenured successful athletic programs: men’s and women’s track and field.

Football? Oh, that’s for another day, when the latest Northerner takes his place on the offseason fields of dreams. Brian Kelly is without much in the larder that he will require to bring LSU football anywhere close to 2019 and at our age, we’re really not sure if the stockroom has the merchandise to fulfill Kelly’s needs. We haven’t yet seen from Kelly any of the fire that Nick Saban brought or his impatience with the fools who suffered the LSU program gladly during most of the 1980’s and 1990’s. But neither has he brought the Captain Kangaroo mindlessness of the 1950’s that somehow sustained Les Miles for more than a decade. Somewhere in the middle is this 60-ish Irish dude who found success at Notre Dame but not like the legend of Knute Rockne or the aw shucks aura of Lou Holtz. Notre Dame has hired some real losers over the past forty years but Kelly and Holtz weren’t among that number.

Two weeks ago, LSU’s recruiting class was ranked 22nd in the country, 11th in the conference and last in the Western division.

However, the quality of the class was in the top 8 and very close to the leader, Georgia, roughly with a 94 to 91 advantage for the Dawgs. LSU’s class showed only 12 commitments while Notre Dame was in the top seven, primarily using the recruiting talents of Brian Kelly, now at LSU. LSU should rise into the top ten by the time this issue hits the street but I wrote this story earlier to avoid a last-minute holiday brain freeze.

Kelly will return stability to the LSU program but will safety stifle innovation? The offensive coordinator hire will prove to be the key for Kelly, not the defensive coordinator. LSU needs both desperately but the transfer portal spells offensive staleness all over the place. Fannies will need to fill seats but many posteriors will be looking at LSU at home in the future instead of fighting the odds that Tiger football will actually grow up for its loyal fans and avoid giving them the middle finger on so many levels. I’ll go into the reasons in the next section because I will be one who will not be at as many Death Valley games because the school is quickly turning the game time experience into Death Valley Days. If the fan is expected to upgrade his checkbook to continue to afford seven or eight home games, the university must upgrade the fan’s experience as well. Entering social and virtual media only for the good of the cash cow known as Tiger football without the complimentary offering of cutting edge pregame and game time experiences for the fan won’t satisfy much longer for a school that throws away more than 20 million dollars because of stupid coaching hires.

For more than 40 years, I have attended games on Saturdays and one Monday at Tiger Stadium as a season ticket holder and many more years saw me in the stands from my first college student game in the mid-60’s until the firing of Charle McClendon in 1979.

Like most fans, I have had some of my biggest highs and lowest lows there. But those emotions will have to continue more often at home as my advancing age makes it harder for me to walk the distances around campus before and after each game. I will continue to attend SEC games for the next few years but the others will be sold to a party who will appreciate them more than I. There are other reasons as well to limit my game day travels: I will attend games with a close business friend whose family has outgrown the use for splitting tickets by game; now we’ll go to fewer games, but together. The travel time and wasted time around campus waiting for the game to begin, disappearing parking venues and outside of the bookstore and the old campus student center, little to do on campus unless you tailgate. Those are the physical reasons. The university’s lack of follow-through and thought for its supportive fan base’s needs is the other. From cratering on providing a fan-centric advisory committee to tossing plans to really upgrade the food, drink and venues at the stadium, this school proves it couldn’t care less about Tiger fans as long as TAF provides the bucks and they don’t have to. How about installing escalators for the older fan base, as stadia continue to build higher and steeper? What about converting some of the old student stadium housing units into dining and meeting venues, suites or clubs if you will, but a bit more inclusive than the posh holdings of the well-financed. When’s the last time anyone put any thought into the dead time to entertain fans between plays other than cheesy car races and giving away a cheap prize to someone sitting in a certain section? Where does it say that rap is the only music that the stadium can air during the game? Has anyone re-thought the entrance of the Tiger team through the north portal to return a sense of coordinated anticipation or has it become a meh event?

How about an update for the band uniforms and some new routines that bring a “wow!” factor back to the Golden Band from Tigerland? And what about new cheerleader vocals, routines and focus with some camera work and sparkle for these hardworking kids? Restroom improvements, off-campus parking/shopping/shuttle services, retention of paper ticketing, chair backs for all fans, not just the sidelines…..if each game is priced by its appeal, why not make the stadium’s appeal more visible? At least the scoreboards have become better but there is room for improvement in that area as well. Geaux, Tigers! Goodbye, full schedule Tiger Stadium season tickets.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries LDWF Agents Cite Charter Guide for Violations in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents cited a Montana resident for alleged charter guide violations in Plaquemines Parish on Dec. 15.

Agents cited Daniel Sullivan, 32, of Bozeman, Montana, for failing to comply with charter boat regulations by not having a charter guide license and failing to present a U.S. Coast Guard license.

Agents were on patrol in the Port Sulphur area when they stopped Sullivan with paying customers onboard his vessel. Sullivan did not possess the required U.S. Coast Guard Captains license and LDWF charter boat fishing guide license.

Failing to comply with charter boat regulations carries up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail for each offense.

Agents participating in the case are Corporal Thomas Forehand, and Senior Agent Shea Schexnaydre. This case will be forwarded to District Attorney Charles Ballay for prosecution.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are now preparing for New Year’s.My family decided they didn’t want the traditional meal of turkey and all the trimmings. The only thing we had that was “traditional” was the gumbo, yams, and baked spaghetti. Instead of turkey we had pork loin. This is the first year in many, that we had very little leftovers. That was a big relief for me. I surely didn’t feel like figuring out how to use turkey in 30 different ways. Might try a different route for New Years. However, I have to have cabbage, black eyed peas and cornbread. I guess change is good with some things. Not everything, just some.

Okay, with all that being said, I wanted to show you just one more set of Christmas ornaments. These are designs created by Tracy Moreau. Another one of my favorite artists. I am working on a couple more pieces by her for my collection next Christmas. I just love the way the colors pop on the black background. These were simple pieces to paint. That is, if the cat would have sat nicely on the painting table and had not tried to help me every three minutes. But that is okay, he is leaking how to lay on the brush I need to use. And pretends not to understand when I ask him nicely if he is laying on it.

Still, with all of that, I did enjoy painting these pieces.

Suddenly the pole bent and the drag started singing. As tight as I keep them there was no doubt we had a hog on the end of the line. I was considering picking up the power poles and chasing it but he was able to make the fish turn and come back around the bend in the canal towards the boat. This was the biggest he had ever caught. This trip was made for him but I had just begun.

Everything was still. The gulf was flat and the keeper fishing was not happening so we decided to go look at the nearby rigs.

It kind of late for cobia but there was a chance a stray may still be around. We dropped down for some red snapper. Sll we found was shorts. The only keeper we had on we lost to a shark. I carry 2 larger spinning rods with 100 pound test on the bay boat for days like this. We hook up to a monster and after a short fight it goes into the rig. I guide him on how to finesse the fish out of the pipes. It worked and after a few minutes we had a good battle on our hands.this topped the biggest he ever caught by 6 inches. A day of memories once again.

On the way in we looked for a few keepers again. Our poles kept bending but a bit more than we wanted. We ended up with 8 keeper reds and some rig lagniappe.

My next trip was for Voo Doo fishing charters. We went trout fishing. The bite was on. At first it was white trout but a 50 to 60 foot move put us on the specks. They started flinging the trout on the deck. These were all nice. Nothing to measure.

It was not long before we limited out. We finished and brought our fish in to be cleaned. The other boat was still out.

A quick 20 minute stop and we had 5 good blue cats in the boat. I saw what I wanted to see and they were very happy for the bonus trip.

We had our 50 specks and some good white trout. As I was sitting at the marina waiting for the other boat to come in I decided to go around the corner and check out a catfish hole. I invited the guys to hop aboard.

The next day I woke up and asked Beth if she wanted to go fishing. She wanted to sleep a bit more. I said ok I will just go out for a few hours this morning and she can rest. She got up right away. This girl was not having me go fishing alone.

We set up in about the same place as the day before. I got her baited up and casted out for her. She hooked up immediately. Once I got that fish off I grabbed a rod with a sparkle beetle on it and casted out before she could hook up again. I got the second one in the boat. The game was on. A front was coming in so we headed back. We had 31 beautiful specs. It was a great way to end the season.

Words to GREAUX by PLANTING TREES AND SHRUBS Many of us appreciate not having to do a lot of yard work during this time of year. However, many folks are asking about replacing landscape plants following the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. One of the most common landscape questions I have been getting recently is when is the best time to plant trees in the landscape. Well, the answer is now! Now Will Afton is the best time to plant because the plants are in a dormant state (low irrigation and nutritional needs) and temperatures are well below heat stress levels. Not only is it the best time to plant it is also a great time to transplant and move plants around the yard.

Don’t waste any time and start the planning process now.

If you want to add a shade tree start thinking about the location where you will put it.

Depending on species, many trees have different shapes and sizes. This should be a part of the decision-making process. How tall do you want it to get? How wide do you want it to get? Do you want an evergreen or a deciduous tree? We have many different trees that work well in back yards. For narrower spaces, trees like the bald cypress, tupelo and swamp gum make for excellent native options. Nuttall Oak, Shumard Oak, and Willow Oak are excellent choices from the oak family and are deciduous. Some other notable deciduous trees are the American Beech, Sycamore, and Green Ash. The Southern Magnolia and Savannah Holly are good evergreen choices. As you can see there are many different options for you. It might be best to visit with a nurseryman and see what some of these trees look like in person.

In order to plant we must dig a hole. There is no right way or wrong to dig a hole, but we must think about the plant when we do it. The soil level in relation to the trunk (whether it is container grown or field grown) should be noted. You do not want to plant it any deeper than that. The width of the hole should be about two to three times the diameter of your root ball. Go ahead and remove the tree from the container. With field grown tree, be sure leave the root ball intact by leaving the burlap and metal wire in place. Place it in the hole and backfill with the soil you removed from the hole. Lightly pack the soil and make sure the original soil line on the trunk is visible. You might need to replant if the tree is too low. Finish the task by adding a 2-3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree. Be sure to pull away excess mulch from the base of the tree a few inches to avoid “volcano mulching”. To finish the job, apply a three-point staking system to keep the tree from blowing over. The stakes can be removed after the first growing season.
