IT’S BEEN A YEAR OF STRAINS

For those of us living in the Deep South, the supply chain crisis hasn’t been as devastating as it has been for most of the nation. Our ability to live without certain goods and services more attuned to the coasts and the central/northern reaches of America have been a Godsend in general to people close to the Gulf and shipments not dependent on California ports.

But the tensions of limited goods and delays has put a strain on us all. My friend, Bruce Miller with his Michigan christmas trees, had to find sisal from the Amish folk in his neck of the woods for binding the thousands of trees his crew brings to our area in late November. Bruce is an old school Troll, a Michigan native living below the Mackinaw Bridge separating the lower portion of that state with the Upper Peninsula, a country so cold that most of us wouldn’t venture there past October or before May. Meth labs and opioid usage is heavy in his areas, where employment prospects are thinner than in most of the state. Covid restrictions are higher there, as the politics are different than here. And shortages of diesel and drivers for long hauling has put the prices of Bruce’s trees higher than ever before.

The strains are also among us needing employees. Hundreds of jobs go begging because of the results of two coddled generations with their $800 electronic life support units wanting to chill rather than find the will. Guilt-riddled parents will generally allow such enabling as they are too busy with their own shallow lives and no ability to teach or instill self-confidence, willpower, sense of duty or pride in achievement. This puts a strain on society, which needs self-restraint to keep civilization at an acceptable level.

There’s there strain of a divided nation, a Congress of cowards and crybabies, selfish and stupid. They are led by a man needing care somewhere between assisted living and supervised activities outside a facility (but as most of us realize, he basically is receiving such attention in order to maintain the facade of his ability to hold his position).

In sports, the strain of watching an injury-depleted and Drew Brees-less New Orleans Saints has placed thousands of Who Dats under some type of mental care regimen. And there are no words to describe the embarrassment of what passes for professional basketball in the Big Easy. The same holds true for Tulane football, who’s near-miss against Oklahoma was the early and perhaps only highlight of a very frustrating season on the gridiron. And finally, the boudin and cracklin’s show that was Ed Orgeron left the LSU football program fractured and bleeding from his and other’s inattention to Title IX concerns and just the atmosphere of today’s world which does not treat women like so many units of livestock.

Of course, there was the bell cow of strains, Jack Strain, the disgraced sexual predator who used his position and persuasion to alter the lives of several young men over the past 30 years or so. Former Sheriff Strain now will not be allowed the luxury of society ever again, especially at whichever prison facility will have to provide him with isolation and 24-7 security from those fellow inmates who would like nothing better than to introduce Strain to the subtlties of same-sex relationships.

And finally, the latest strain of Covid-19. Like hurricanes, the world’s favorite disease and topic of discussion is tearing through the Greek alphabet for names. Now it’s Omicron (Orgeron?). Why perfectly good Greek letters were skipped all the way to Omicron is something I cannot answer. I guess Beta sounded too much like “better” and Gamma like “grandma”, who, of course contracted the virus as a subset population statistic, can’t be mentioned. For those of us who don’t give one Iota about the politics of health as opposed to the reality of health, this latest strain puts a Kappa on one lousy year. Let’s hope the Nu Year gives us a Psi of relief.

Maybe if we all learn to Rho together once again as a nation it might. Hope it’s not a Pi in the sky dream.

Hope you all had a really great Thanksgiving. We were minus two people this year for Thanksgiving. Carlea’ and her Dad went deer hunting, so that left my daughter, Kelly, grandson, Dion, and me. We decided we would do something small (which never turns out that way). We had a really nice meal, ate too much, and relaxed for the rest of the day since we all had to be at work on Friday.

Remember how I told you my granddaughter loves sunflowers? Well, she decided that she wanted her corsage and her date’s bout for the homecoming dance made with mini sunflowers. I had done a lot of corsages when I had the flower shop but I had never used sunflowers. She continues to challenge me every chance she gets! The first challenge was in finding the mini sunflowers, as the supply house did not have any. But they did have some beautiful straw flowers, so I got those, just in case. After searching for a couple days, I finally found the sunflowers. The second challenge was “how in the world am I going to design this. Well, I started adding wire and wrapping stems and wire and everything just sort of flowed together. Keep in mind, it has been a Very Long time since I had made wristlet corsages. I thought the sunflowers and straw flowers really look nice together. I added some spray pearls, a little limonium, and black sheer ribbon and called it a wrap! The straw flowers actually feel like crisp paper. I Really like those flowers.Carlea’ really likes to challenge my creativity. When all was done and she was thrilled with the way the corsage and bout came out, she asked me, “Maw, how are you going to outdo yourself next year”?

All I can say is, “Lord give me strength!” She does keep me on my toes, she keeps my mind young!

The challenges continue.

Well, with all that being said, so,,,what will your next craft project be? Mine........I am thinking Christmas! Oh by the way, I will be at Academy of Our Lady for the Alumni Christmas Cookie Swap & Craft Fair on Dec. 11, 2021 from 1 to 4 p.m. If you are looking for something fun to do and get a little shopping done, come by and see what goodies we will have. Our target was slot reds. I stayed in the marsh. All we could find was over 27 inches. We were getting some good battles in the shallow waters but no keepers were finding our fish box.

It was a cold drizzle all morning. We did manage to keep 2 for the box. One at 28 and the other was 29 inches. These larger fish helped us ignore the damp drizzle. My fingers could not ignore it though. They were all wrinkled up.

We were finding a lot of rat reds at 15 to just under 16 inches. These fish grow at an inch a month until around 16 inches. They slow down their growth after that. We should have a good crop in the spring.

I was thankful for all the big guys and rat reds. It helped us forget about the constant moisture being showered upon us.

We managed a nice box with 8 reds, 4 channel cats, and a large sheepshead. Not too bad in dirty waters.

On Thanksgiving morning while the girls cooked Andy and I went out looking for a few trout. I found some birds and set up camp. It was not long before we were on the board.

We picked through the shorts.

We brought home 15 trout and 5 sheepshead. It made my fish cleaning board look good. 30 trout filets made for 4 nice packages of meat for the evening meal.

Words to GREAUX by SHARE PLANTS AS HOLIDAY GIFTS Amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs are plants traditionally given as gifts during the holiday season. You will soon start seeing them (if not already) for sale at various retail shopping stores around the area. These particular flowers found their niche in the American lifestyle because of the fact that they can be easily transported (bulbs) and that they naturally flower towards the end of the year. Whether you want to give Will Afton the gift of a bulb plant to a friend or try it out for yourself. Keep reading for information on how to grow them.

The term bulb is used to describe a particular modification of a plant stem. There are several stem modifications seen in plants. Stems do not always grow upright and vertical. Stems can grow sideways, above the ground, or below the ground. Stems can be of a regular size or they can be enlarged. Stems can also be short or long. And, that’s where bulbs fit into the conversation. A bulb is a shortened, or compressed, version of a plant stem. The bulb itself can be dissected and detailed to show the construct of an entire plant. The basal plate is near the bottom of the bulb and is where roots grow. Fleshy leaf scales appear to resemble plant leaves but they merely store energy rather than create it (photosynthesis). The tunic layer or covering provides the bulb with physical protection. As you peel back the layers, you will eventually find the start of a flowering bud. The whole collection includes everything needed to start a new plant!

Growing a plant from a bulb is about and easy as getting up in the morning but some people will need a pep talk to help get over the hump of getting started. If you have received a bulb plant as a gift and would like to pot it up, start locating a few materials. You will need a container that is somewhat proportional to the size of bulb you received. Most of the pots used with container gardening will work, but you might want to find a pot without irrigation holes.

Glass vases are popular containers to grow bulbs. Use a filler material like rocks or pebbles to support the bulbs in the container. Pea gravel offers rounded edges and earth-like colors to provide a very natural looking product. Crushed limestone provides a clean look and interesting texture. Find something you like and go with it. We only need something to hold the bulb in place. Obviously, you will need access to water at some point and you might want to put on proper PPE for this activity, like closed toe shoes, long pants, long sleeves, and gloves.

Fill the container with rocks or pebbles and arrangement the desired appearance by hand. Place bulbs into substrate with the root side down and the growing tips pointed towards the sky. Add more in a concentric circle as desired. Space them as you like. You can leave them separate and loose or you can arrange them to be touching. You can always add more gravel if necessary.

Once the bulbs are arranged in the gravel to your liking, it is time to add water. Fill the container with clean water to start the growing process. Bring the water level all the way up to the bottom of each bulb. Check the water level daily from here on out. Keeping the bulbs covered with water will encourage decomposition. Add enough water to maintain the water level near the base of the bulbs and you’ll be well on your way to success. It’s that easy!

Two kittens snatched up and over a fence before a neighbor’s dogs could reach them, Layla and Frazier were lucky indeed. Their mother, a stray in the neighborhood, was also rescued. Frazier is shy and very affectionate.

Layla also loves attention but is more outgoing than her brother. They would get along well together in a home, but they are not inseparable.
