But Jack Strain has the type of mind and persona that allowed the evil and intimidation to flourish long after the first contact with his victims. Strain’s composed, almost indifferent public demeanor hid the monster inside. Hey, people would say, that guy looks more like a CPA than a cop. You really think he’s a threat to anyone when he doesn’t carry that badge?

Strain, though, apparently knew enough psychology to put the fear of God (or in this case, the Fear of Strain) into several young men, both strangers and family. A jury of 12 also thought the same; the trial judge’s advice to jurors before deliberations to bring several changes of clothing had to be the funniest non-humorous line of the event. These jurors could have played six sets of tennis and had a five-course dinner and still had time in one day to come up with a verdict of guilty. Strain’s defense was so tenuous that it will probably be studied in law school as an example of how to defend an obviously overly guilty person without the defense lawyer retching every day.

It was reported that Strain kissed his wife and children goodbye before being led to a very familiar holding cell in his own house of operation so many years ago. This family should have kissed him goodbye a while back but blind loyalty is a tough trait to overcome.

We can only pray that Daddy’s practices aren’t hereditary. Meanwhile, the social penal circles at Angola or some other odious destination are most likely buzzing on where this former lawman winds up. It’s bad enough to imprison a lawman; with Strain’s credentials, it’s more likely he’ll rarely see the light of day with a cellmate. With one, he probably won’t see many while experiencing the sexual Nirvana he apparently sought while free.

I am so happy for the colder temperatures we are having. Finally, it is starting to feel like Fall! I was able to cut the grass in a little over an hour, including weedeating. It felt so nice. I started out with jogging pants and a long sleeve shirt. I was a little chilled, By the time I finished I was hardly breaking a sweat. Love this gorgeous weather’ My granddaughter loves sunflowers. She had a day off school so I took the day off work and we headed to the floral supply house.

I knew she would be excited to see all the flowers in the coolers, both processed and those waiting to be processed for the florist.

She got to meet my salesman and another who helps me when he isn’t available. We had a fabulous time. She got to walk around the coolers, look at all the containers that designs are put in, everything that is used to make all those corsages for every occasion. While we were there they were putting out all the beautiful decorations and greenery for Christmas. And of course we did not leave empty handed. We bought these beautiful sunflowers for Carlea’. This arrangement went together easily.

All we had were the sunflowers, a vase, and some leftover limonium from All Saints Day. A very quick and easy bouquet to make. Wouldn’t this look nice in your home for Thanksgiving? The best part is, sunflowers last a long time.

This was in 1926. The entire pitching staffs of either the Atlana Braves or the Houston Astros only pitched twice as many total innings during a six-game world series this year as did al did by himself in one game. As his wife told our class, “ it took him three days before he could lift his arm.” 26 Innings. That’s three games. Today’s wuss pitchers barely complete a game in a season. Yesterday’s iron man on the mound is today’s pot metal specialist, complete with Tommy John surgery.

Odell Beckham Junior just needs to shut up. Jarvis Landry was the better receiver on LSU’s 2011 magical team and has been better in the pros. Besides, Jarvis is a blue collar worker in a blue collar town; Odell fancies himself a superstar and does stupid things like pass out money in a college locker room when regulations and laws dictate against such a practice. Hey, Odell….

Words to GREAUX by ORNAMENTAL GRASSES OFFER MANY USES IN THE LANDSCAPE As horticulturalists, we make plant recommendations all the time. People bring us their plant problems, and after a while, we start to become aware that certain plants have certain issues. I can remember a talk by Dan Gill from years ago where he went on and on about ornamental grasses and how we should plant more of them in the landscape because they were so easy to grow and maintain. Fast forward to this Will Afton past weekend and I’m seeing a great number of ornamental grasses planted throughout the area including home landscapes, neighborhood entrances, and public spaces. People have caught on!

Ornamental grasses offer the gardener an endless list of qualities without many side effects.

Traits like drought tolerance, disease resistance, insect resistance, and adaptability to several different soil types make ornamental grasses easy to grow for all gardeners. Grasses also add texture, contrast, color, and year-around interest. Even as grasses go dormant during winter months, they still provide interest and excitement to the winter garden.

Observe the inflorescence (or flower) of a grass plant. Grasses don’t have a need to attract insect pollinators and therefore don’t display beautifully colored petals in varying arrangements.

The flowers of grass plants are very plain. Grasses utilize the wind to spread genetic material.

This is why we recommend planting corn plants in a black pattern rather than in a long single file row. There is a higher probability of pollination (and subsequent fertilization) when wind pollinated plants are grouped closer together. The flowers of grass plants aren’t just for seed production. In the landscape, the flowers of ornamental grass provide a pleasing landscape quality during late summer and fall. Even after the color fades, the flower structures provide texture through late winter and early spring. Some grasses produce quality foliage in different colors which benefit the landscape. As they go into the dormant winter period, these grasses lose that initial color, but they still provide interest in the landscape, even with brown leaves.

Coupled with an exhausting list of desirable traits, ornamental grasses are some of the most versatile options for use in the southern landscape.

Grasses come in many different sizes and can perform different uses. Smaller growing gasses work well when used as borders or ground cover plantings. Look at Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hamelin’ for a low growing groundcover grass that can be mass planted to cover the most amount of ground. While not exactly a grass, Liriope muscari, shares some of the same qualities.

They are commonly used to outline and define flowerbeds by planting in a border or line.

Medium size grasses help to create vertical lines in the garden. Some examples of medium sized grasses include Nassella tenuissima, Mexican feather grass, or purple fountain grass, Pennisetum setaceum rubrum. P. setaceum rebrum ‘Fireworks’ is a LSU AgCenter Super Plant known for its purple, pink, and red color scheme. Pink muhlygrass, Muhlenbergia capillaris, is catching on with a lot of landscape designers. The foliage of this clumping grass will get about 2ft tall and the entire plant will average 3ft by 3ft when in flower. Plants like Louisiana iris (Iris brevicaulis, I. fulva, I. giganticaerulea, I. nelsonii, and I. hexagona) and variegated flax lily (Dianella tasmanica ‘Variegata’ ) offer the similar design qualities of medium sized grasses but provide diversity in a mixed landscape planting. Taller growing grasses work best when used in the back of a flowerbed. Some examples include Miscanthus sinensis, maiden grass, and Cortaderia selloana, pampas grass.

Happy National Adopt a Senior Pet Month!

At the Louisiana SPCA, we have pets of all different ages that range from less than six-monthsold, to 14-year-old seniors! While small kittens and puppies may be adorable, senior pets are just as loveable and loyal as their younger counterparts. We think dogs and cats at any age would make great additions to a family, but we are very excited to dedicate an entire month to highlighting the value of adopting a senior pet.

Did you know, older dogs typically have more basic training and are less likely to have accidents in the house? Not only do senior dogs typically have more obedience training, but senior dogs have already developed their personality and are likely to adjust to a new home more quickly than a puppy. Also, you can teach an old dog new tricks! Senior dogs are likely to already know basic commands like sit and stay, but if you take the time to teach them, a senior dog can learn a new trick just as quickly as a younger dog.

A senior cat can also make a great addition to a family! From being more independent than kittens to keeping themselves occupied while you’re away, adopting a senior cat can be the best adoption decision for you and your family. Senior cats are also less likely to scratch up your couches and furniture and have a more laidback lifestyle than young kittens.

Adopting a senior dog or cat can be a life-changing experience for both you, and your future pet. While you’re at your local animal shelter looking for your next furry friend, be sure not to overlook the senior pets that would be a perfect addition to any home!
