SLOW DOWN Belle Chasse Academy is an Emeril’s Culinary Garden and Teaching Kitchen school partner, a signature program of the Emeril Lagasse Foundation. The program’s vision is to enrich the lives of children through a fun, fresh perspective on food. Belle Chasse Academy recently held an event that not only involved students but parents as well.

The school’s first “Learning with Leadership” parent event was held. The day started with refreshments in the outdoor teaching kitchen. Parents and staff were then led through the school’s garden by students where they talked about particular plants already growing as well as what is planned for the upcoming season. Parents even got to sample some fresh mint from the garden.

Student leaders included: 5th grade - John Williams & Laken Williams; 6th grade Kaila Harrison; 7th grade - Betty Cox, Alejandro Gonzalez, and Kirsten Walcott; 8th grade - Ricardo ‘RJ’ Guzman Abigail Smith practicing the “m” sound while using her mirror to watch what her mouth does as she says the sound.

Can you believe it? We have finally gotten some cooler temperatures! It feels so good!

It really makes me want to do things around the house that I’ve been putting off for quite some time. Believe it or not my energy level has even increased.

I want to do so many things but there just aren’t enough hours in the day.

But they are, my friends, wooing Slidell hard on the heels of sin-hardened Bossier City dumping them after only a few years at the gaming altar. If the east side of the Red River across from Shreveport can’t put your gambling operation in the black, well, dark days are ahead for those who want the circus to open for the alleged rubes of eastern St. Tammany Parish.

Don’t misunderstand: a professional, quality operation such as a Beau Rivage might work even in the blue collar underbelly of Slidell. Slidell is not a casino destination; we can compare the company spearheading this operation to the forces trying to inject a three and one half trillion dollar package of socialism and high societal income onto the nation’s budget ledger. The numbers can’t add up in either case and the social negatives certainly will outnumber the gains.

Since this company’s entertainment chips apparently are penny ante compared to, say, a Beau Rivage, the odds of the bulk of the financial support of this operation would come from Slidell. And staying home to gamble in a casino is nothing like running down to the local three or 50 machine “casino” which features no real casino amenities, like restaurants, entertainment or carefree clients with vacation on their mind. The local trucker, salesman, housewife or laborer takes about 30 minutes to an hour to blow off a little steam and a few bucks. Not exactly the profile or demographic of a real classy destination operation.

This Shangri-la being postulated by the Pacific boys doesn’t exist anywhere else or otherwise you would have seen its success in television commercials and print. Instead, a female huckster tries amateurishly to sway folks into climbing into the snazzy red convertible of wonderful facilities and millions of easy tax dollars. Show me the money, honey, and put your treasure up for the security you say you don’t need to provide. Not all scams are on our cel phones or in investorladen get-rich schemes; some come pre-packaged from the north or west and we’re supposed to tumble for them. Since this area has been standing up to some of the more audacious practices emanating from the “pandemic panic”, it certainly should have no problem turning its back to the sh..t and polish boys from the casino.

I found the cutest Tracey Moreau pattern and decided to put my own twist on it. I changed the background from what she had originally done. I used Deco Metallic paints and just kinda of did some dry brushWelling in different places with different colors. I painted everything else with Americana paints with the normal highlighting and shading. I painted this on a 8 X 8 board that can be hung on the wall or just stand it up. This was such a fun project to paint. I am going to do more of these. I will be changing the background color and the wording. I will have a Happy Thanksgiving, Fall Blessing, and Thankful. I will have some for sale. Let me know if you are interested.

See any high-end residential developments nearby?

What about marinas, convention centers, sports complexes or high-end restaurants? (or, ohhhh!

Lazy River!!!) That’s why waterfronts that aren’t good for anything more than non-Vegas style casinos and/or other tourist-oriented businesses are full of such operations. No area in St. Tammany plays this game on that economic level and if the Beau Rivage or similar operation folk thought the Northshore was fertile ground, they would have come calling a while back.

The fall fishing is starting to come into place. We have not had a “green river” in 3 years. The fish and the fishermen are running in circles with one storm after another disturbing the waters.

Now all we have to do is have the fronts calm down a bit more and we can have a great fall fishing 2020. Imagine that something going right in 2020.

I had Mitch and his 70ish year old father Buddy looking for bulls for 3 days. This trip was about showing Buddy a great time fishing. Even with the strong 2 foot plus tides and high winds the fish did not disappoint us. Mitch impressed me with all the attention and care he had for his father. I soon realised this family is exceptional. The care and attention Mitch gave Buddy was exceptional.

The next day was more of the same.

Although not a bunch of bulls there was enough action to keep us out there looking for a trophy.

It was a good 3 days and just enough action so as not to over work his father he had 3 good memorable days here in Venice La. Kife is Good!

Words to GREAUX by PREPARE FOR LATE SEASON FUNGAL DISEASE IN THE HOME LAWN Fall can be beautiful time of year in Louisiana. Daytime temperatures are cooler, and the fall colors are amazing. However, anyone from The Sportsman’s Paradise or has spent significant time here knows that we can go through warm periods during the fall and winter. A lot of us even joke about the fact that you can experience all four seasons in a single day! Well just like people, lawn grasses have similar experiences.

Will Afton Even though the amount of day light gets shorter each day, nighttime temperatures start to fall, and the trees start dropping leaves, our lawn grasses will start growing if the temperatures are warmer enough to allow it. Be vigilant this month and observe your lawn for signs of large patch disease. Fall time weather patterns present the perfect conditions for disease development. Especially, if the warm season turf hasn’t gone dormant.

Look to apply a fungicide to help prevent the progression of large patch disease and to provide your lawn with much needed protection.

Large patch disease (also known as brown patch disease) is caused by the fungal organism, Rhizoctonia solani. This fungus is very abundant in South Louisiana, some would say ubiquitous.

It waits for the perfect environmental conditions and a susceptible host before causing the actual disease. St Augustinegrass is the most susceptible species of turfgrass but all warm season turfgrasses (centipedegrass, bermudagrass, and zoysiagrass) can be affected if disease pressure is high enough. The disease is first observed as small circular patches of dead grass. In some stances the patch can be somewhat irregularly shaped even though circular patches are more common. When conditions are favorable, the patches can become quite large in a short period of time, especially if left untreated. The organism attacks the base of the leaf sheath, causing it to rot. It doesn’t kill the entire plant. The root system and growing point are still viable and when the disease occurs in spring, you will see new blades regenerate from the center of the dead patches resulting in a donut shape.

Untreated large patch disease results in thinned out areas of lawn that favor the growth of weedy, more tolerant species. It typically starts in areas with poor drainage where water can accumulate. Areas nears trees, shrubs, and fences are problematic due to reduced air movement that prevents the turf from drying out after irrigation or rainfall. The disease develops most rapidly when nighttime temperatures average between 60 and 75°F and daytime temperatures do not exceed 85 to 90°F. Once large patch disease begins in the lawn, manage it with a fungicide program. Fall applications can help protect lawns, limit damage before the turfgrass goes dormant, and disease conditions become unfavorable. Environmental conditions will dictate the number of applications needed. In most cases, two applications are recommended to provide the best control. Fungicides can come in dry or liquid forms. For active large patch infestations, use a liquid version if possible. Dry granular fungicides are still effective but remember that they must be watered in it order to be activated.

Most of the fungicides available to homeowners are systemic fungicides, meaning that they are taken up by the plant and work from the inside out. Look for products with the active ingredients such as azoxystrobin (Scott’s DiseaseEx), myclobutanil (Fertilome F-Stop, Spectracide Immunox Multi-Purpose Fungicide), and propiconazole (BioAdvanced Fungus Control for Lawns, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II). Take note of what product is applied on the first application. It is important to rotate active ingredients when treating for large patch disease because of resistance issues. If propiconazole was used in the first application then look to find a product with myclobutanil or azoxystrobin to use in a second application. Always remember to read and follow all label instructions when applying any pesticides. When used in accordance with the label, these fungicides are safe to use on all home lawns.
