Pearl River residents have longed for this day for nearly 5 years now. I can not count how many times I have been asked the question, “When will our Spur 41 bridge be rebuilt and open to the public?” Well, the wait is over!! As of Sept. 13, 2021, the bridge over Gum Bayou has officially opened. We are so grateful to have our bridge back. This road is a commuter road for so many and will help relieve a huge portion our traffic congestion on hwy. 41. Especially in the school zone hours. Thank you to all our Town, Parish and State officials that kept pushing for the rebuilding of this bridge.

I am always so proud of the way our community pulls together in times of need.

Many of you may know that one of our local Churches “The Crossing” had some devastating damage to their new facilities on Hwy 41 due to Ida. On Sunday, August 29, 2021, strong winds associated with Hurricane Ida ripped most of the roof off of their building.

Due to this unforeseen event, the building was compromised with 10-12 inches of rainwater. When this occurred, the entire ceiling throughout fell and furnishings were destroyed, including electronics and instruments.

What you may not know is that another local church “RiverLife Fellowship” has graciously offered their facilities for “The Crossing Church” to temporarily meet in at 4 p.m. on Sundays. This might be strange to some, that two totally different denominations now share the same building, but knowing both churches personally, I know it is because of their great love for Jesus Christ and for our community that this possible. In fact, most of our churches having the same goals in mind, have crossed the denominational lines and joined together in one way or another thought out the years. Yet another reason to love our town 😊.

However, there are those who have asked how they can donate toward our cause.. “ Let’s show them how much we care PR and give to help them rebuild. It is finally October! Now for some cooler temperatures to make it actually feel like October. I am so tired of all this rain. I don’t know about you, but when I walk in the front yard it is squishy, I still have standing water in the backyard every time it rains. At least I was able to cut the grass last weekend. It’s really gonna be tall when I cut it again. Well, the good news is, I won’t have to cut the grass every week now that Fall is finally here, yea, maybe.

Wow! Has college football been taking it in the shorts this year!

Clemson, LSU, Ohio State, Florida, Oregon, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Wisconsin. Bitching and moaning about the same things that inconsistent programs usually complain about. That leaves Alabama and possibly Georgia as the only two real powerhouses in the country. Iowa, Cincinnati, Kentucky - well, don’t drink the Kool-Aid just yet. Firings of Dan Mullen, Ed Orgeron, et al? Not going to happen. Exciting football into December? For a select few. It just shows how difficult it is to build a sustainable program, where player and assistant coach turnover does not derail the process.

Even Bill Belichick’s aura of superiority has finally come to a reckoning…and the argument over which force…Biil or Tom Brady making the New England dynasty….has been partially answered.

However, Sunday night proved that Belichick still has the mindset to take average talented players and give even the Super Bowl champions, the Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Bucaneers, a mental and physical run for their money. So the argument proves one thing: both Belichick and Brady have the will to make their team more than the sum of its parts and produce successful, tough-minded results as individuals. The marriage of both produced irressistable results, much like the pairing of Nick Saban and Alabama makes that combination nearly invincible.

Going to the LSU/Auburn game with my granddaughter for the first time in more than four seasons was highly anticipated. Having lost her sight, she is preparing this winter to attend a Louisiana facility whose reputation for graduating the sightless into a productive and meaningful professional life is well-documented. Even though she could not see the action on the field, she could revel in the camaraderie of the fans and those who went out of their way to show her kindness, understanding and compassion. The game? What game? LSU is back in a dark place, back to the era just after the Les Miles debacle. Coach Orgeron has limited options and does not have the answers and may never have them. That’s what makes Nick Saban’s journey so amazing.

Yes, it is Alabama and the Perfect Storm of 2008 started with several embarrassing losses for the Tide and Saban. But not since John Wooden has an amateur sports team showed such dominance in one sport. And The Bear? Well, Saban would beat the Bear seven out of ten times, trading teams every other game. Bryant was a recruiter and showman and motivator but he wasn’t the best X’s and O’s coach and his understanding of the mind of the football player didn’t move forward at the pace of Saban’s. Yes, the Bear integrated the SEC which should go down as his best work and he did create most of the ‘Bama mystique. But Steve Spurrier created ALL of the Florida mystique which was kept alive by Urban Meyer and so maybe his place in SEC coaching lore should be right up there with Bryant and Saban.

Returning to the Tigers….this team will probably wind up worse than last years’, which brings to mind the final year of Jerry Dinardo’s reign in 1999. Losses to Kentucky, Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama I decided to do something other than and Texas A&M are almost guaranteed with what passes for an LSU running attack and lack of what I had originally planned for this edition. My painting coach gave us a challenge in class last creative offensive and defensive schemes. And I’ll only reserve judgement on Arkansas for a week week. We had to make our design using candy corn as our subject. Well, I just happened to have a set or two after having their head handed to them by Georgia. It won’t be pretty, it certainly won’t be of 6 coasters that I needed to do something with, and with this being October, it worked out perfectly. entertaining and with Covid-19 restrictions and closures, it certainly won’t be as comfortable to So here they are. tailgate, hang out or burn some time before kickoff.

I sealed and painted the coasters with the main color first, splattered them with an accent color. I then drew on the candy corn, painted them the appropriate colors (but you can choose any color combination you want). I drew on the faces and painted them. I used Deco Arts new glitter varnish to accent and seal all around the candy corn. After that dried, I used Deco Arts Matte Varnish to varnish over the candy corn and the glittery background around the candy corn. The hardest part of this was deciding what faces to put on them. These were so much fun to paint. I really needed something fun to do.

Apropos for a team that has been misrepresenting a once proud football program for the past season and a third. Sloppy, undisciplined and unimaginative. That’s what LSU football represents in the third decade of the 21st century. Is it worth our time and treasure in the short haul?

Probably not. But life right now is not much fun for many of us and so we persevere for just one more season. 2019 is still a strong memory and no one else ever did what the Tigers did that year, especially offensively.

After the hurricane evacuation and damage repairs it is time to go back to work. The fish are chewing. I ran a trip for super Strike Charters to kick things off. One of the 3 boats found some fish and called us in. The place could only fish one boat. Once he was done the second boat moved in and got his limit. I moved in after that.

After only getting rat reds, some hard head cats and a very small flounder it was a blessing to find this beautiful redfish. We are allowed 1 over 27 and this one at 29 inches was coming home with us. We were finally on the board.

Our day quickly turned into a problem day.

We wanted keepers. Our fish were too big.

Actually an unusual fishing problem. We started throwing our bigger ones back and putting nothing in the fish box.

The action was endless but the box was not getting full. I could not leave fish to find fish.

They were having too much fun.

985-649-4020 As the tide turned we decided to go looking for something smaller. This was a smaller one at 26 inches. Little did we know it would be our smallest keeper redfish of the day. Our quest for slots reds was not going good. The other 2 boats had already gone in and we were still fishing. I hit the river looking for something different.

Different we soon found. This black drum gave him what he thought was his hardest fight of the day. The reds although slightly bigger did not do battle like this stubborn hog did.

This was the arm breaker time for a beer fish of the day. Once it got hooked the boat ride started.

The fish turned the boat and pulled the power poles loose. We were now fighting this in the river dodging a container ship. Bob’s arms were now burning. The black drum was nothing compared to this monster. Bob deserved a rest and a cold beer.

Once done he made another cast and hooked a 4 to 5 foot shark that gave him another even harder fight but quickly bit through the line. To say we has a hard fought action filled day was an understatement.

Red snapper is now open in state waters 7 days a week at 4 fish per person until further notice.

Life is Good.

Our take for the day was 7 reds with the biggest at 29 inches and the smallest at 26 inches. We had a 26.5 and 2 at 27 and 2 others just overand 2 sheepshead totaling 65.7 pounds.

There are several other species of Camellia available in the trade. The garden camellia, C. japonica, produces large leaves and large rose-like flowers.

Will Afton C. reticulata camellias produce very large flowers. The tea plant, C. sinensis, is a little-known evergreen shrub that grows well in the shade and is the same plant cultivated for tea in China for centuries. The sasanquas, like all other camellias, are evergreen plants that produce attractive dark green foliage and bloom late fall through the winter. The one characteristic that sets sasanquas apart from the rest is the fact that they can tolerate full sun.

Due to their perennial nature, hardiness, and longevity sasanquas are popular landscape plants in Louisiana.

To prepare a new planting of camellias consider having the soil tested to determine the current soil pH or degree of acidity/alkalinity. Camellias prefer a soil pH between 6-6.5, slightly acidic.

Add agricultural limestone to increase soil pH and elemental sulfur to lower the soil pH. Provide a moist, well-drained soil full in organic matter. Homemade compost or commercial compost available from the garden center are excellent choices. Camellias can be very shallow rooted.

It’s important to note when adding new plants in the garden, to plant them slightly higher than ground level, especially if drainage might be an issue. As far as sunlight conditions, camellias prefer partial shade but sasanquas will grow in full sun under ideal soil conditions.

As with other plants, sasanquas have a few pests that can become problematic over time. The most common insect pests of camellias are scales, especially tea scale. Scales are piercing/ sucking insects that feed on the undersides of leaves. They can cause a speckled leaf appearance and they also produce honeydew, a sugary substance that favors the growth of black sooty mold. Scales can be easily managed using oil sprays and systemic insecticides. Spider mites are problematic during hot dry periods during the summer and early fall. Symptoms appear as speckling near the midrib of the leaf. From a distance, the leaves take on a silvery appearance Timely oil sprays made throughout the year will keep spider mites at acceptable levels.

Sometimes camellias leaf beetles feed on new growth during the spring, but never really at alarming rate. However, permethrin can be used for control if desired. Be sure to read and follow label instructions before applying any pesticides.

Because of their popularity and stamina in the landscape, you will find many different cultivars of sasanquas for sale at garden centers and home improvement stores. Some of the tallest growing cultivars can reach heights near fifteen feet tall. The cultivar ‘Alabama Beauty’ is one of the earliest bloomers and has beautiful rosy-red flowers. ‘Pink Snow’ is another larger growing cultivar and it produces lovely soft-pink flowers. The ‘Leslie Ann’ cultivar was selected as a Louisiana Super Plant due to its outstanding performance It produces a white flower with pink edges on each petal. ‘Setsugekka’ is another taller growing cultivar but it produces a pure flower. For those looking for a smaller growing option look at ‘Stephanie Golden’. It produces a hot pink flower and stays around five to six feet tall to satisfy those smaller spaces. These are not the only choices you will see. Make a trip to your local garden center to see what is available in your area.
