So it was a bit off-putting to see a disclaimer by Ticketmaster late last week that said, in effect, if you’re credit card isn’t at an address considered part of LA-LA Land, then we won’t sell you tickets to the 49ers-Rams game this week. Wow! Talk about overreach.

Going to a Ram game in Inglewood/Compton/Norwalk/Southgate/Van Nuys/Culver City (anywhere but the city limits!) is a chance to find peace of mind because meh-ism and don’t give a crapola are the twin mantras of this metro about the vagabond team known as the Rams and there are actually more fans at a Tulane game than a Rams contest. However, Ram fans at a home Rams game do number among the top five group who bother to inhabit SOFI, trailing the 49er fans, San Diego, oops, LA Charger fans, Oakland, oops, LA, oops, Las Vegas Raider fans and University of Southern Cal fans, whose record as an amateur professional football team under Pete Carroll remains legendary.

Now the Rams have the best possession receiver in football (Cooper Kupp) and their Kupp runneth over on the defensive front with several All-Pro performers. They finally have their first meat and potatoes quarterback since Kurt Warner with Matthew Stafford and a good passing attack with Kupp, I Love Myself Odell Beckham, JUNIOR (OBJ) and others. But the 49ers have their number and since the San Franciscans already exorcised the demons of Dallas at Jerry’s World and the Frozen Tundra and Roll Out the Barrel friendliness of Lambeau Field against an undefeated at home Green Bay Packer team, flying an hour to the LA urban jungle and wrangling another victory over the artificiality of Los Angeles’ public persona is more likely than not. In other words, the Niners should finish their Ram pancake meal Sunday afternoon and either meet the incredible quarterback of Kansas City or the incredible quarterback of Cincinnati for their 8th Super Bowl (in LA, where else, where the first Super Bowl took place for tickets either given away or sold for no more than $15 to watch Green Bay dismantle Kansas City). Personally, I would like to see the Niners play Cincinnati (for the third time a team has faced the same foe in a Super Bowl) because A) the first two games were really close and full of football lore, especially the second meeting and B) Mr. Joe Cool the Second, Joe Burrow, will be playing. As an LSU fan I can’t lose.

The beginning of this story is a little ditty I knocked out BEFORE the 49er/Packer game at Lambeau last Saturday. I was one of more than 79,000 packed like Bratwurst into the venerable stadium at 7:15 PM, just an hour before the heavy dusting snowfall began to tint the field. My trip to Green Bay with two others and our adventures will have to wait another issue because of this story and we’re still groggy from the 1,150 mile drive from Oshkosh to the Northshore on Sunday. But it was a great time and if you have given up on the monstrosity of what now is reflected by the NFL, you need to take a timeless trip back to mid-America from the mid50’s with modern day industry and tech and moderate viewpoints - southern Wisconsin. It’s beautiful and its soul-inspiring and it would be overrun if it weren’t for December through mid-April. Keep it going On, Wisconsin. And don’t let anyone Badger you into changing too much. (Note): We will have the journey story for you in our first February issue. By then, I hope I haven’t eaten my words about the games as my wife will have eaten the incredible cheese curds from Wagner’s Market in Oshkosh.

We finally have some cold weather! So are you enjoying all the frigid temperatures? I am enjoying some nice hot cocoa topped with marshmallows! And it is not the prepackaged one. I actually made it with old fashioned Hershey’s cocoa, whole milk, and real sugar. Oh so good!

Tonight is the perfect night for it.

And we all know Valentine’s day is right around the corner. I found these little hearts at Hobby Lobby last week and thought this would be really fun to paint. The original design was a class that Laurie Speltz taught on a square block. I changed some things in the design (colors, accents, surface).

I base coated the heart with Deco Art Coral Blush. I then decided that I would add some pizazz by adding some Metallic splashes to the heart. I know it is hard to see in the picture but it is there and is sparkly! I also used a Micron pen to outline and add stitch marks around the lettering. Looking at it now, maybe I should have put some pink dots inside the white hearts. Your imagination is the only limit there is. This would be a great craft project for you and the children or children to do together. That would be a nice “making memories” project. These hearts would look so cute on a Valentine tree.

Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine....Not really sure, but I know it will be lots of fun!

Who is included in the Settlement?

The Class includes anyone who (1) established and initially funded a prepaid account through GTL’s automated telephone system (also called interactive-voice-response or IVR) and (2) had a positive account balance that was reduced to $0.00 due to account inactivity for 180 days or less from April 3, 2011, until October 6, 2021.

What does the Settlement provide?

GTL will provide up to $67 million that will pay (1) credits/refunds to eligible Class Members, (2) the costs of notice and administration, (3) attorneys’ fees and costs, and (4) special service payments to Class Representatives. GTL has also agreed to change its Inactivity Policy to benefit Class Members and others. Additional details are in the Settlement Agreement available on the website.

How can I get a payment?

If you have an active GTL AdvancePay account at the time the Settlement is finally approved in mid to late 2022, you will receive an automatic credit to your account. If you have or will have an inactive GTL AdvancePay account at the time the Settlement is approved, you need to submit a Claim Form online or by mail by June 14, 2022 to receive a refund. If you are not sure you will continue to use your GTL AdvancePay account through 2022, you should file a claim. Anyone who has both active and inactive GTL AdvancePay accounts will receive an automatic credit on the active account but will need to file a claim for their inactive account(s) to get a refund.

GTL will credit or refund 100% of the amount that GTL retained from your account due to inactivity.

Payments to former customers may be reduced if the total credits/refunds exceed the available Settlement fund.

What are my rights?

Even if you do nothing, you will be bound by the Court’s decisions. Former GTL customers who do nothing will receive no refund (unless they reactivate their account within two years of final approval and funds remain available, in which case they may be eligible to receive a credit). If you want to keep your right to sue GTL yourself, you must exclude yourself from the Settlement by April 15, 2022. If you stay in the Settlement but do not agree with the terms, you may object to it by April 15, 2022.

The Court will hold a hearing on August 26, 2022 to consider whether to approve the Settlement, a request for attorneys’ fees and costs up to $18,675,000, and special service payments of $25,000. You or your lawyer may appear and speak at the hearing at your own expense.

I have not been fishing yet this year. I plan on getting back this month. You and I have been missing out on some great fishing between the fronts and the inshore fishing has even been strong on the miserable says you can not get offshore. This is a Mexican Gulf inshore catch on one of those days. It consisted of some lane snapper but they had to cut that adventure had to be cut short because the customer got queezy to say the least. A limit of redfish, a white trout, a pompano, and some nice lane snapper made for a well rounded trip.

On another day when the weather kept everybody in close captain Eddie Burger of Fish Venice Charters took his offshore boat with a crew rig hopping in a slightly protected area for an epic day of catching. Being in a large stable offshore boat on a day like they had was the only way they could have accomplished this.

On the days when you can get offshore the bite has been outstanding with some BIG rewards.

This was one of Eddie Burger’s trophies around 160 pounds.

The offshore bite is shaping up well for this year. Here is a nice trip Voo Doo Charters put together to start their season off.

Captain Scott of Super Strike Charters got his season off in style with a pair of heavy hitters. They came in at 193 and 210 pounds respectively. The big fish are doing what they are supposed to so be sure to book your dream trip soon.

Words to GREAUX by PLANTING TREES POST HURRICANE A lot of folks have been dealing with the loss of urban tree canopy not only in St Tammany parish but all throughout Southeast Louisiana and areas of Southern Mississippi. Now that most of the debris removal process has taken place its time to assess the current situation and start planning a reconstruction plan. There are people who have lost major trees that dominated their landscape. These trees provided shade Will Afton to everything growing below. Now the homeowner is presented with a situation where all of the understory plant material is being exposed to much more direct sunlight than previously. The sunlight during this time of year is poor quality because of how far away the sun is to our side portion of Earth’s surface. Those understory plants may look okay now but come summertime they will start showing symptoms of sunscald and other conditions people experience when growing plants in the wrong light environment. If you find yourself in this situation then keep reading. Its time to plant trees to replace those you lost with Hurricane Ida. The topic of the best time to plant trees is always popular with horticulturists and gardening experts. In fact, it’s one of the most commonly asked questions I receive during this time of year. Now is the best time to plant because the plants are in a dormant state (low irrigation and nutritional needs) and temperatures are well below heat stress levels. Not only is it the best time to plant it is also a great time to transplant and move plants around the yard.

If you want to add a shade tree start thinking about the location where you will put it.

Depending on species, many trees have different shapes and sizes. This should be a part of the decision-making process. How tall do you want it to get? How wide do you want it to get? Do you want an evergreen or a deciduous tree? We have many different trees that work well in back yards. For narrower spaces, trees like the bald cypress, tupelo and swamp gum make for excellent native options. Nuttall Oak, Shumard Oak, and Willow Oak are excellent choices from the oak family and are deciduous. Some other notable deciduous trees are the American Beech, Sycamore, and Green Ash. The Southern Magnolia and Savannah Holly are good evergreen choices. As you can see there are many different options for you. It might be best to visit with a nurseryman and see what some of these trees look like in person.

To plant we must dig a hole. There is no right way or wrong to dig a hole, but we must think about the plant when we do it. The soil level in relation to the trunk (whether it is container grown or field grown) should be noted. You do not want to plant it any deeper than that. The width of the hole should be about two to three times the diameter of your root ball. Go ahead and remove the tree from the container. With field grown tree, be sure leave the root ball intact by leaving the burlap and metal wire in place. Place it in the hole and backfill with the soil you removed from the hole. Lightly pack the soil and make sure the original soil line on the trunk is visible. You might need to replant if the tree is too low. Finish the task by adding a 2-3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree. Be sure to pull away excess mulch from the base of the tree a few inches to avoid “volcano mulching”. To finish the job, apply a three-point staking system to keep the tree from blowing over. The stakes can be removed after the first growing season.

PUPPY BITING TIPS If you adopted a new puppy recently, chances are you have noticed a strange play habit: nibbling or biting. While biting is not always something we want to see our pups doing, it does not mean your puppy is aggressive. In fact, chances are they are just playing.

Play biting in puppies is extremely common and does not, in any way, indicate that a puppy is or will become aggressive. Puppies play bite as a habit. Their ancestors often settled disagreements, played, and fought by using their mouths, and that same instinct is what is making your new puppy nip your hand as you play with them. While it is normal for puppies to use their mouth while playing, it is also important to slowly fade that out so they can become well-behaved adult dogs. As cute as a puppy nibbling on your hand can be, it can become potentially dangerous for adult dogs to play bite, especially with strangers.

When first starting the process of stopping your puppy from play biting, tolerate some biting, but stop playing and disengage if your pup bites with all their force. This will teach your pup that biting full force is not an acceptable action, and eventually they will get the hint. Once they are no longer biting with all their force but still biting softly, you can begin to fade out biting all together by redirecting their mouth to a toy and stopping play if they bite you at all.

While training your new puppy may seem time consuming, it’s vital to the development of your new pup into being a great companion for life! Training also strengthens the human animal bond and is a rewarding experience both for the pet and the owner. It can be helpful to contact the animal rescue group in advance to verify that the type of pet you are interested in will be available for you to meet, as not all available pets will be present at an event. Also helpful is applying to adopt a pet before the event. Jar-Jar, Cory, and Maddie were there to meet and interact with the wonderful people who adopted them.
