He’s not a particularly impressive physical specimen nor a truly great athlete and his measurables were much less than his contemporaries in high school and college. He will never rival Peyton Manning or Shaquille O’Neal verbally in his commercial endeavors. And his famous lack of not willing to suffer fools gladly is well established.

But whatever entered the body and mind of this soon-to-be 70-year old head football coach has never been rivaled in the sport and few coaches in any other athletic endeavor have been his equal.

Nick Saban, the junior Nick of his family, might have the classic “litlle man” syndrome that drives so many physically smaller persons to greatness. Certainly it was a work in progress at Michigan State, where Saban had success but nothing like the curmudgeon success of Woody Hayes of an earlier generation. No, Saban had a way of evaluating situations few coaches possessed over the years. He saw weaknesses and voids in systems and programs and worked quickly and sometimes brutally to change them for the better. He tore into LSU’s good ol’ boy way of doing football 21 years ago and brought a cobwebbed program into the modern era for five years, even insulating it to a certain extent against the retrofitted attitudes of one Les Miles until the program finally got wise and jettisoned him. His success at LSU was limited by two things: Saban’s ego and his hunger to get into the NFL. Saban might have turned LSU into Alabama in 2008 when his honeymoon with the NFL was long over; pro players didn’t take any guff from this half-pint coaching great wannabe and his formula that had worked with 18 to 22-year olds wasn’t going to make any headway against the egos and income of 23 to 35-year old pros who had seen most of it, if not all of it, before.

Saban tucked his tail back in and left Miami, unwilling to take a chance on a seemingly washed-up quarterback named Drew Brees and returned to college. What transpired in the halls of Tigertown may never become public but the Sabans were not invited back into the arms of Baton Rouge. So they went to Tuscaloosa, which is a lot more like northern West Virginia than south Louisiana and Saban began a journey that has brought the insufferable egos of Crimson Tide fans to a new and sustained high over the past 13 years. This week, Saban goes for his 7th national college football championship with a roster replete with Louisiana prep All Americans and a Process that has been decades in the making. How does the Process work? Well, take a track record of a century old college football success story, add in a Bear bigger than life and the tactics of a squad of well-trained militia, along with a bunch of money and a political lifeline from the SEC office to northern Alabama and you’ve got the background for a coach of Nick Saban’s ilk to create a monster. Faced with deciding which coach you’d want to have in an Alabama intrasquad game, I’ll instantaneously take Saban. Part old school, part screamer, part mentor, this man has taken cerebral excellence to a new college football standard and “his’uns” would beat Bear Bryant’s “your’uns” four out of five times. Saban doesn’t stockpile or squirrel away players like Bryant did; his competitive world would not allow it. So Saban outschemes everyone, taking losers like Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian and offering them an environment in which to succeed. Will Saban ever have the great coaching tree of so many others?

No, because his coaches don’t possess the dark side of Saban, the meanness and detachment for his type of program to succeed.

Saban is not a mean or bad man but he will never really be a content man. And that inner drive to improve even his greatest successes will never let the man rest.

So….congratulations, Coach Saban. I’ve liked you since you stared me down in 2004 when I asked you my first question about your program and seasoned LSU sports reporters almost gasped at the frankness of my question. But it was a football question and those are the ones you will answer. When you open your latest national championship present after finally gaining success in Miami, I hope you can find a greater degree of contentment.

Two Men Cited for Illegal Oyster Harvest in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two men for alleged oyster violations on Dec. 29 in Plaquemines Parish. Agents cited Nelson C. Williams III, 45, and James Garrison, 39, both of Port Sulphur, for taking oysters from a polluted area. Williams was also cited for a log book violation and oyster vessel sanitation violation.

Agents were on patrol in the area of Two Sisters Bayou and utilized a drone for aerial surveillance when they observed a vessel with two occupants actively dredging for oysters in a polluted area. The agents maneuvered their vessel to the area and found Williams III and Garrison dredging oysters in a closed area for pollution by the Department of Health and Hospitals. Agents also found that Williams falsified his DHH log book for oysters and his vessel did not meet sanitation standards for an oyster vessel.

Agents seized five sacks of oysters and also placed Williams’ vessel and dredge under a court ordered seizure order. LDWF agents began utilizing drones for aerial surveillance video on oyster patrols in March of 2018.

Taking oysters from an unapproved polluted area brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Violating log book and vessel sanitation requirements brings a $25 fine and loss of product.

This is Williams’ fifth offense for taking oysters from a polluted area. For a third or subsequent violation, the violator’s oyster harvester license shall be revoked, and no new such license shall be issued for 10 years from the date of the third or subsequent conviction. In addition, the violator shall be sentenced to perform no less than 120 hours of community service. If available, the hours shall be served in a litter abatement community service program. During the period in which the violator is prohibited from possession of an oyster harvester license for a third or subsequent violation, the violator shall not be present on a vessel harvesting or processing oysters.

The case will be forwarded to District Attorney Charles Ballay for prosecution. Agents participating in the case are Lieutenant Adam Young and Corporal Thomas Forehand.

Now that the holidays are behind us and everyone is trying to get back to the normal from the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

What have you been up to? What craft projects have you started?

I know some of you must have gone to Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or JoAnn to take advantage of their after Christmas sales. I lucked out at WalMart. I got this really cute little lantern for only $4.00.

Yea, there is a snowflake on it but, hey it’s still winter! I have wanted one of those lighted tanters for such a long time but really didn’t want to spend the kind of money they were asking for them. I knew if I waited long enough I would find what I wanted at a more reasonable price. And I did. I found the lights at Hobby Lobby (regularly $6.99) marked down to 75% off. I was so thrilled! I already had the small ornaments so didn’t have to stress over finding any the correct size. Ornaments went really fast.

This was so super easy to make. It can be anytime lantern or a Valentine lantern. I plan on making this one my Valentine Lantern. I first cut 5 pieces of #24 gauge wire. I wrapped the end of the ornament with a piece of wire and attached them at different angles and placement so they were scattered. When I had the design I wanted I attached the wire from the first ornament to the top of the lantern so they would hang inside. I then inserted the lights down into the lantern from the top. I scattered 3 ornaments on the inside bottom. To make it more Valentineish. I plan on painting a wooden heart red and placing it in the center of the snowflake. And adding a small red bow to the top with a couple of white sweetheart roses glued into it. Whatcha think?

Well, that’s my craft for this time. What will your next craft project be?

Mine......I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.

Words to GREAUX by PLANTING TREES IN THE LANDSCAPE To plant a tree, we must dig a hole. There is no right way or wrong to dig a hole, but we must think about the plant when we do it. The soil level in relation to the trunk (whether it is container grown or field grown) should be noted. Do not plant it any deeper than that. The width of the hole should be about two to three times the diameter of your root ball.

Go ahead and remove the tree from the container. With field grown tree, be sure leave the root ball intact by leaving the burlap and metal wire in Will Afton place. Place it in the hole and backfill with the soil you removed from the hole. Lightly pack the soil and make sure the original soil line on the trunk is visible. You might need to replant if the tree is too low. Finish the task by adding a 2-3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree. Be sure to pull away excess mulch from the base of the tree a few inches to avoid “volcano mulching”. To finish the job, apply a three-point staking system to keep the tree from blowing over. The stakes can be removed after the first growing season.

Soon the blooms on our late winter and spring blooming trees will start to swell and later will bloom for all the world to see. Here is a list of popular flowering trees that work well in our area.

Start planning now so you can add some of these trees into your landscape this season.

• Cherry and cherry-like trees such as Taiwan flowering cherry (Prunus campanulata), Kwansan cherry (P. serrulata), and purple leaf plum (P. cerasifera) are all native to Asia. They are some of the showiest late winter/early spring bloomers in the landscape. The Taiwan cherry blooms rosey=pink flowers in late January/early February depending on temperatures. The Kwansan cherry produces large, heavy rosey-pink blooms in early spring. Despite the name, purple leaf plum is actually another species of cherry. It is known for its dark marron purple that bleaches into a bronze purple later during the summer. All three trees will reach between 15-20ft tall and 10-15ft wide.

• Grancy Graybeard (Chionanthus virginicus) is a small native tree occurring throughout the Gulf coast. It averages about 20ft tall and produces white fringe like flowers starting in March.

The Chinese fringe tree (C. retusus) has a similar habit but produces a darker green leaf and a slightly showier flower.

• Parsley hawthorn (Crataegus marshallii) and green hawthorn (C. viridis) are both native trees that occur from Virginia to Florida and all the way west into Texas. They both average around 20ft tall and 15ft wide. Both trees typically bloom in late March. The green hawthorn produces white flowers and the parsley hawthorn produces white to pinkish colored flowers. whereas parsley hawthorn flower are not fragrant but it is reported that green hawthorns produce an unpleasant odor.

• Eastern redbud tree (Cercis canadensis) is one of the most popular native trees grown in the nursery industry. It is known for its beautiful heart shaped leaves and tiny pea-like flowers. The magenta colored blooms appear in late February and March before the foliage. Redbuds are also known for their yellow fall color. The cultivar ‘Forest Pansy’ produces scarlet-purple leaves in the beginning of the season that eventually fade to green in the summer months.

• Deciduous magnolias, commonly referred to as Japanese magnolias, are extremely popular late winter flowering trees. The most popular cultivars are called the ‘Little Girl’ magnolias. ‘The Little Girl’ magnolias were bred from interspecific cross between lily magnolia (Magnolia liliiflora) and star magnolia (M. stellata). Some of the more popular cultivars and their flower colors are ‘Ann’ (deep purple-pink), ‘Susan’ (red-purple, and ‘Jane’ (light pink-purple). All three of these trees have a multi-branched habit and reach heights about 15ft tall.

I was out of service for a few months. After almost 3 years of limping it was past time for my knee to be replaced. I unfortunately missed the best bite in 3 years. It had to be done.

Today I decided to get a look at what I was missing. While waiting for an elderly couple to load up and launch I struck up a conversation with Foster and Lester from woodland plantation. My knee surgery was mentioned and they invited me to go with them. I invited them on my boat and explained that it had sat for close to 3 months. As far as I knew everything was in working order but I would rather use my boat. Lester wanted to use live bait so he picked up some. This proved to be the ticket. The place I wanted to go to was out due to the increasing ENE winds. Other places I thought of were also out due to no water. Full moon and strong winds makes for shallow conditions. My first stop got nothing but I had no choice to play the area. I worked into a slightly sheltered area and Lester started putting on a clinic. All of these fish were huge. The bite was by no means on fire but it was enough for us to keep us in the area. After lester putting 5 in the boat I managed a good size sheepshead. When the bite had slowed to nothing and the water got a bit dirty I moved on.

This was going to be a short trip anyways because they had some work to do in the afternoon.

My next stop had the water moving in a different direction as a normal incoming tide would be. A few casts and I made another short move. As I put the power poles down Lester casts and hooks into another beauty.

We found a few more and Foster being a plastic only kind of guy managed to even put one beauty in the boat. In his defense he did not fish as much as we did. I was glad everybody caught. They had to get in so we cut it short with a respectable box of fish.

A dozen trout 14 to 22 inches and a good sheepshead. There were no throwbacks. I am back into business. Here is looking forward to a prosperous, healthy 2021 for everyone. Life is Good!

All non-business ads for merchandise are FREE if the items are priced this way:

If you are selling one item - it can’t be more than $300 If you are selling two items - each item can’t be more than $200 If you are selling three items - each item can’t be more than $150 All free ads must be completely written by the seller whether placed in person, by mail, fax or email and be legible to be printed. Persons placing multiple ads -or- consistently sending free ads will be barred from running ads in our paper.
