Tony’s Take JIMMY G: NO LONGER A GIGOLO When the San Francisco 49ers traded for Jimmy Garoppolo several years ago, most of pro football fans thought the team had stolen a franchise quarterback out of the back pocket of Bill Belicheck. How could Bill allow such a talent to escape frosty New England when their franchise G.O.A.T., Tom Brady, would obviously become senile and brittle within a few years, retiring or dying on the Boston area field where he had created so much legend.

Tears flowed as the Black and Gold got the short end again but hearts in San Francisco were high on a hill.

She’s been with my wife and I since last spring, a halfway house move to prepare her mentally and emotionally for the steps she began this week to become a productive, happy and adjusted member of society. Louisiana is fortunate to have a couple of visual centers that can offer the blind the opportunity to do just that. My granddaughter wants to get into animation and with computer-generated imagery and her imagination, she is very likely to become involved with a person, sighted, who can provide the visual creation from her mind and allow her to pursue a career and perhaps a partnership in her chosen field.

Her destination is Ruston, home of Louisiana Tech, former NBA Hall of Famer Karl Malone and members of the Duck Dynasty family.

It is part Mayberry, part college town, located between Shreveport and Monroe. She will have the next six to nine months to acquire skills and confidence that will free her from many of the old restrictions the blind have borne. It will be a strong learning curve, with field trips, physical outings and study, with the availability of classes at Louisiana Tech to further her education and opportunities to mainstream into society as a recognized, mature, confidant young lady.

She left the Northshore last week, anxious but excited, confident but nervous. She will do just fine as she navigates the five courses the Institute teaches from instructors who are also blind. Yes, it is the blind leading the blind but the institutes believe you must walk the walk if you want to talk the talk. Kaleigh will be coming home this spring for normal college-type break activity but on a shorter time leash. She will experience living on her own, with or without a roommate, apartment-style accommodations in a town that is growing with youthful exuberance. It’s not the Northshore but it is progressive and welcoming and it will offer my granddaughter a wonderful opening into a life that could not have been imagined a generation ago. She will do her best and she will do well as an adult with more of the responsibilities than a newly minted college freshman faces. As a child, I taught her old rock songs, including “Rocking Robin” from the 1950’s. To paraphrase the song, “rockin’ Kaleigh, tweet, tweet, rockin’ Kaleigh, tweet, tweet, go rockin’ Kaleigh ‘cause you’re really gonna rock it tonight.”

So ....did you enjoy the brief winter we had? Christmas didn’t feel like Christmas and neither did New Year’s. I keep telling myself, I live in South Louisiana, and that is expected. I remember when I was a kid, some Christmases we had cold,freezing weather, and a few of those, we even had snow. Then again, I can remember years when we woke up on Christmas morning we were able to wear shorts to go outside and play with our toys. Just goes to show ya’.

I sincerely hope you had a wonderful start to the new year. I also hope 2022 is a lot better year than 2021 was. I certainly hope the economy gets a lot better and the sky high prices we have been paying for everything, levels out and goes back down to more realistic numbers.

The cost of everything is unbelievable!

That brings us to today’s craft project. This cute little gnome can decorate your home through the Christmas Holidays, New Years, and on through Valentine’s Day and possibly beyond! The message “Be Kind Gnome Matter What” really carries a lot of meaning. Kindness is a rare commodity nowadays. I may decide to add a couple more compoints to this design. It is done with paint and ink. At the time the photo was taken it had not been varnished yet as I don’t want the ink to smear. So I will let it dry tonight and spray varnish in the morning and finally apply 3 coats of brush on varnish to finish it off.

Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But as always, it will be fun!

Words to GREAUX by FIGHTING CRAPEMURDER THROUGH PLANT SELECTION Recently, social media platforms have been screaming about “crapemurder”, the practice of drastically reducing the height and Will Afton canopy of a mature grown crapemyrtle tree in the landscape. The argument against follows the philosophy of right plant, right place where as the argument for follows the follow the leader philosophy. People get very defensive about crapemurder and I can’t blame after seeing some of the memes currently going around Facebook and Instagram.

Instead of jumping into the fight, I would like to take a different approach. I would like to show the Louisiana gardener that there are many options when it comes to flowering trees, like the crapemyrtle.

Flowering trees are always a nice addition to the home landscape. They are small enough that they ease the anxiety of gardeners who wish to plant trees near the house and large enough to notice from afar. Most of our flowering trees produce beautiful displays of flowers at different times of the year, but many of them have other interesting characteristics like multi-trunks, attractive bark, fall foliage color, and interesting growth habits. As you go through your daily routine, pay attention to flowering trees as you encounter them on the way to work, around the neighborhood, and other avenues of routine commute. Take pictures of what you like. Use a horticulturist to help with identification. You can then start searching for that plant’s local availability.

One of my favorite flowering trees is the chaste tree, Vitex agnus-castus, or what most folks just call vitex. They reach an average size of 15ft tall and wide. This tree produces a multitude of trunks with architectural flair. The lavender flower spikes bloom throughout the summer months and provide nectar to many pollinating insects.

Japanese magnolias, deciduous magnolias, are another flowering tree to use throughout the landscape. Over 60 years ago, plant breeders crossed Magnolia lilifolia, tulip magnolia, and M. stellata, star magnolia. Some of the offspring became included into what we now know as the Little Girl Series. You’ll see cultivars such as ‘Ann’, ‘Jane’, ‘Betty’, and ‘Susan’ along with their different shades of purple, pink, and white. Each will slowly grow into about a 12ft specimen.

They bloom early in the spring, making the flowers susceptible to late spring frosts. However, with little pest problems this tree is easy to care for.

For filtered light and shadier areas look at the Eastern redbud, Cercis canadensis. One of the more popular native trees grown in the nursery industry, redbuds are known for beautiful heartshaped leaves and pea-like flowers. The magenta colored blooms appear in late winter before leaf emergence. Redbuds are also known for consistent yellow fall color. The cultivar ‘Forest Pansy’ produces scarlet-purple leaves during the beginning of the season.

In the end, I find myself fighting the “crapemurder” epidemic by choosing the right plants for the right places. Sometimes the right plant may not be a crapemyrtle. It’s time to go against the grain and break the current crapemyrtle paradigm. It’s time to educate our friends and neighbors to let them know they have a choice!

PUPPY SOCIALIZATION TIPS As we begin 2022, many people are starting it with new furry family members.

For those who opened their homes to a new pup during the holiday season, training your new family member could be a top priority.

Training and socializing a new puppy are important factors to having a well-behaved adult dog.

Puppies that learn to socialize with other animals often have less issues with other animals as they grow up, and puppies that learn how to properly interact with people are more likely to be friendly to strangers in their adult life. Also, training a puppy on basic commands can teach them valuable listening skills and set them up for success in the future, making both their lives and your life easier.

When it comes to socialization, puppies should learn to be comfortable with all types of handling. For example, holding their paws from a young age can make life much easier when attempting to trim their nails as an adult. They should also be properly introduced to wellsocialized animals and as many people as possible during their younger years. This will allow them the ability to become comfortable with people and other dogs as they grow up.

Positive reinforcement and puppy training classes can be two valuable methods to teaching your new puppy how to be a well-mannered dog. Negative reinforcement should never be used on an animal. Aside from being inhumane, negative reinforcement could create undesirable results and cause even more behavior issues down the line. Positive reinforcement awards the puppy when they do something correctly, and it teaches them to associate what you just told them with the action they did. If you tell a puppy to sit and they do it, give them a treat and they will learn to associate “Sit” with the action of sitting.

Another great way of socializing your pup is by introducing them to as many things as you can think of! The more they can be exposed to, the less they will be unsure of when they are older.

At approximately seven months old, Jar-Jar found herself in a terrible predicament. Abandoned by her owners, she was out on the street, frightened and hungry. The peanut butter jar smelled good.

She just wanted to get a taste of the little bit that was left inside. So she put her head into the jar, only to quickly realize she could not get it back out! Cat rescuers came to her aid and took her to a vet who sedated her and removed the jar. Jar-Jar was then cared for in a foster home where she put on weight, regained her strength, and recovered from her ordeal. “She is so sweet and affectionate,” her foster mom says.
