Taking commercial fish without a commercial license or a commercial gear license carries a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in Bourgeoisjail.also faces civil restitution totaling $137,218.13 for the replacement value of the illegally caught fish. This is Bourgeois fourth offense for fishing without the required commercial licenses. The case will be forwarded to District Attorney Charles Ballay for prosecution. Case agents are Lt. Adam Young, Sgt. Villere Reggio and Corporal Austin Landry.

The Irish stew and heartier fare of northern Indiana has been replaced with the spice and sensual partakings of the bayou and the river. Let’s hope Coach Brian Kelly sees his first LSU playoff appearance a half hour before the Devil knows he made it. Meanwhile, those young men who might have lived on Ramen noodles for part of their years under football scholarships at LSU and other schools can thank those Wisconsin athletes who used their noodles a few years ago and created the NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) that gives the player a piece of the financial success college football has obscenely flaunted for years. Now the married offensive lineman can have a decent place to live and the financial security while he labors 40 to 60 hours a week for a football scholarship to be available to him. Hopefully, this will cause relief in the locker rooms of hundreds of stadia across the country. Without addressing the negative side, which we did in an earlier column this year, NIL replaces nil, the lack of income for a multi-tasking young athlete who wants an education and decent life while helping fill the coffers of entities who have made over-the-top profits off these young guys’ ability to play and win.

The grisly details are in the writin’s of the sports scribes, but its safe to say the LSU lines more resembled our Southern border than an impediment to other teams. The offensive line had no chemistry and the right tackle position is open for free agency. The best rushing quarterback in LSU annuls kept the Tigers in the game when virtually every other position set did little to help out the Arizona State transfer. Florida State is no juggernaut but their fans were more vocal in the Superdome and the team more energized than LSU. Four games against weaker opponents before the Tennessee game in October, three of them at home and the fourth against a miserable Auburn program on the Plains should leave LSU 4 and one before the Vols come to Baton Rouge. If the Tigers are 5 and one after Tennessee, they will have found the chemistry and confidence to at least play Florida away an even game along with Ole Miss at home and make enough noise against Arkansas and Texas A&M to warn them about the 2023 version of Brian Kelly’s team. Alabama? Well, it should be noted that the Tide needs to join the NFL as their coach used his brief NFL experience nearly 20 years ago to retool his image and philosophy and create the Perfect Storm of Hell in Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa is on the cusp of receiving a major water resource study industry. But the beginnings of that study began in 2007 as Nick Saban has not only parted the waves to allow the Tide to reach the Promised Land numerous times since that year but it is rumored that Saban himself can walk across those same waters. The Tigers will be better than the last two years reflected. Don’t forget: even Saban lost openers, including that 26 to 10 stinker in Blackburn, Virginia in 2002. He also lost his last game as the LSU coach to a vanilla Iowa team in a Florida bowl game. At least the head coach sounded like an intelligent human being during his brief interviews on CBS Sunday night, not like the doofus rants of a sex-warped Michigan/Ohio loser or the tribal grunts of a Bayou boy who should have known better after a dream season in 2019. Kelly may have a lousy Louisiana accent, but he is a winnah and will do just fine in Tigertown for years to come. -0-

So ye want ta venture to Tiger Stadium for the new version of Kelly’s Heros. Bring your wits as the capital city is beginning to resemble the Wild West hooligans from the Crescent City. Don’t venture too far afield from the campus and get ready to watch the first generation of NIL-infused footballers attempt to return the Tigers to the ranks of the respectable, let alone the feared. Two doofus coaches with national championship trophies have come and, stupidly, left their stained legacy upon the city while counting their idle millions. But now there’s a man in Red Stick who has not been spotlighted as a potential problem as he has successfully navigated more than 30 years as a college level football leader.

In 2022, Bourgeois sold a total of 51,891 pounds of shrimp, and 6,223 pounds of sheepshead all taken without the required commercial fishing license and gear license. All sales were obtained by trip tickets Bourgeois filed with LDWF.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a Boothville man for alleged commercial fishing violations in Plaquemines Parish on Aug. 23. Agents cited Webley L. Bourgeois, 47, for taking commercial fish without a commercial license and taking commercial fish without a gear license. Bourgeois had his licenses revoked in March of 2021 due to unpaid taxes.

Sure, and ya don’t say, Mulroney, that the Coonass Nation is being run by the Big Mick from Massachusetts. Be ye in good spirits, laddies, as the Tigers try to regain the form created by another Atlantic States resident more than 20 years ago. Brian Kelly, flush and fit in his early-60’s, has the Purple and Gold replete with Green, which makes this team a Mardi Gras juggernaut. “Throw me sampan’, Mistah quarterback,” says the multi-talented receiver corps from Baton Rouge and with two ready for prime time passers at the helm, it could happen again…just not quite as heavy as during the Burrow era.

And you’d be wanting tah know how our Tiger lads performed against those Scarlet Skins from Tallahassee, no offense intended.

The Florida State Seminoles, faith and begorrah, had too much on the lines, if you know what I mean, and the Tigers looked like a rummage sale team for more than three quarters of the game in the Superdome Sunday before they put together a 98-yard drive to essentially pull even with the Seminoles with no time left in regulation. However, another of many growing pain self-inflicted wounds ended the game when the Tigers had their extra point place kick effort blocked, the second such block by Florida State.

During the quest for slots we found a large, over 5 feet, black tip shark that gave the customer a battle he never expected. After many trips around the boat I was able to get close enough to cut the line and only loose the hook. Soon after that we hook up to another hard fighter. Thankfully it turned out to only be a big black drum. After a picture it went back. After fighting bulls earlier and now looking for slots we were surprised to find this trophy 43 inch bull red in the shallows. Our biggest one when we were targeting them was only 38 inches. This was a good way to end our day. It was time for dinner. Life is Good! 9.9.21

As the bite slowed we made a choice to go in looking for a few slots. It was tough but we did manage a few of them while going through a ton of lady fish.

It’s no surprise that Bussey Brake broke into the list this year at No. 15 in the central division. Bussey has produced an astonishing number of lunkers since it was restored and re-opened to the public in 2020. Most of this production is due to the large number of pure Florida strain brood fish that were provided by LDWF’s own Booker Fowler fish hatchery. These large brood fish, in combination with excellent habitat, have provided a tremendous fishery in Morehouse Parish that should continue to get even better in the years to come. In 2021, the American Fisheries Society nationally recognized Bussey Brake and LDWF for excellence in fisheries management associated with the restoration efforts.

Toledo Bend Reservoir (TX/LA) continues to hold a steady position within the central division, ranking No. 5. A low-water period in 2019, which dropped the reservoir to 7 feet below pool for 6 months, enhanced habitat conditions throughout the reservoir for a short window of time. Average winning catch weights have shown an increase in the last year, with several 25-pound, 5-bass limit winning weights. This reservoir stretches along the Texas/Louisiana state line, from Desoto Parish to Vernon Parish.

D’Arbonne Lake makes its first appearance on the list at No. 24 in the central division. This Union Parish gem is most known for its spectacular crappie catches, but for years it has been producing an abundance of quality-size largemouth bass. Numerous bass topping 8 pounds are caught every year, with occasional 10 pounders landed. It typically takes 20 pounds or more to win most tournaments in the spring.

This honor is due, in part, to the dedication and science-based decision making of our Inland Fisheries biologists, a successful Florida largemouth bass stocking program, and the support of our many partners at the local and regional scale. You can learn more about our management efforts by looking through the Inland Fisheries Management Plans, which are updated continuously with the most current biological information from each waterbody.

I got a late call for 3 guys that were going offshore but one of their motors blew forcing the trip to be canceled. I stopped what I was doing and took them out. They wanted bulls. We got there late but found some action. One guy had the presentation down and hooked up quickly. He landed 3 of them while the other 2 watched and just kept getting sail cats. Eventually one of them hooked up. As he was fighting his fish other ones were following the one on the hook looking for a scrap to be dropped so they could get in on the action. This enabled us to cast another bait near the one hooked and instantly get a double.

LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE continued and Fisheries. Louisiana is no stranger to this annual list. In addition to the always-present Toledo Bend and Caney Lake, which made their third consecutive appearance, Bussey Brake and D’Arbonne Lake are now listed among the top 25 lakes in the central division, which is comprised of 13 states. Caney Lake is currently ranked No. 4, jumping up one spot from last year. The ranking is largely due to some astonishing tournament weights, in addition to the great numbers of 10-pound-plus bass caught in the past few years. Habitat conditions are currently driving the surge in big fish and total abundance of bass in this 5,000-acre reservoir in Jackson Parish.

We FINALLY made it to September! Looking forward to cooler temperatures. Between the heat and the rain, I don’t know which I dislike the most. Cutting the backyard with a weedeater is no fun! But I can tell you what is fun, sitting down with an unpainted piece of wood and creating something. Yea, you may want to bang your head on the wall, trying to get something to come through to the brain because you were challenged to create a project for Fall. You could choose anything Fall related. It could be leaves, pumpkins, scarecrows, candy apples, Halloween, just anything Fall! Well, I decided on something simple. And what could be more simple than pumpkins. This will carry through from September till after Thanksgiving in November. This was so much fun to paint. I finally decided on a wooden tag, which can be placed in a wreath or just hung from the door, or even gluing a small wooden block to the back for it to stand alone. I applied two coats of Deco Art Bleached Sand Americiana paint. After the first coat was dry I sanded the wood, wiped off the dust, and applied the second coat. Ater drawing on the pumpkins’ mian lines, I painted one Indian Turquoise, the second is Oyster Beige, and the third is Warm Sunset. Shaded and highlighted each with their coordinating colors. Added some vines, leaves, and berries. Made the edges look distressed and that was a wrap! Looking at it now, I see where I forgot to shade around the leaves and berries. I will do that tomorrow, I know it will look more finished and the leaves and berries will stand out more. Oh well, that’s what happens when I want to hurry and finish something. Sometimes I just get very impatient with myself and want to start something else. Well, that’s my project for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine......I’m not really sure. When I plan anything it gets changed in the middle of the stream! That’s Life!

DEAD BRANCHES

Words to GREAUX by Will Afton

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 9.9.21

Let’s look at a few causes to understand why our landscape trees might develop a dead branch and how to manage it.

Follow me on Instagram @wafton

It is quite common to notice a dead branch in the canopy’s of landscape trees during the late summer months. The second half of a long growing season takes its toll on many of our landscape plants, especially trees. Because of their large size, trees are considered the “tough guys” in the landscape, but they too can struggle with environmental stresses. There is no one single explanation for a dead branch in the canopy of a tree.

William Afton | County Agent LSU AgCenter • St. Tammany Parish 1301 N. Florida St. • Covington, LA 70433 Office: (985) 875-2635 • Fax: (985) 875-2639

The Black Twig Borer (Xylosandrus spp.) is a small beetle with an affinity for your shade trees. These beetles are so small that they typically go unnoticed until they cause a section of tree branch to turn brown. If you can follow the branch down to where green foliage is present, you will notice hole smaller than 1mm. This is the entry hole for a female Black Twig Borer. Once inside the stem she burrows out a cavity and lays eggs. The young beetles use the hollowed out cavity until they emerge as adults where this process can be repeated. The best way to manage this problem is to apply good tree care practices that encourage tree health and vigor. Remove dead branches by pruning 3 to 4 inches below the beetle entrance hole. Insecticides may help but they need to be applied early in the year before beetles enter the tree. Permethrin and bifenthrin are labeled for such use on landscape plants. Be sure to read and follow label instructions before applying any pesticide.

is one of the more popular ways to cause issues in tree limbs and branches. Its common in new construction but it can affect any landscape tree. Changes in surface drainage and root zone compaction along with physical and mechanical damage by humans are some of the leading ways to cause stress on mature landscape trees. When tree roots become unproductive, the flow of water from the root system to the canopy becomes disrupted. Portions of the canopy will stop receiving water. Typically, symptoms of root zone stressed trees include leaf dieback at the tips of branches (furthest point from the root system), delayed leaf emergence, whole branch failure, and eventual tree decline. Older trees that have accumulated stress over a longer period do not recover overnight. It is a gradual response to beneficial soil conditions that help these trees recover. Start by not digging in the root zone of a tree and refrain from cutting roots within 10-15 feet of the tree in question. Prune out dead limbs when possible. Passively alleviate soil compaction by providing a layer of organic mulch over the root zone. The organic layer of the forest floor provides habitat for many organisms that live their life in the soil. They help to aerate the soil by digging, burrowing, and feeding. You can create a forest floor for your shade trees by using mulch. Cover the soil with 3-4 inches of any organic mulch product. Fallen leaves from the tree in question make an excellent resource for this purpose. Pull the mulch back 6 inches from the trunk of the tree to allow for air flow at the crown level. These suggestions won’t turn things around overnight, but they will help to reduce stress over time which benefits long-lived plants like trees in our landscapes. -0IN SHADE TREES

Lightning strikes can cause dead branches in trees if they don’t bring the tree down entirely. Each lightning strike produces an electrical charge of 100 million volts and can reach temperatures greater than 50,000°F. When only a small section of a tree’s canopy is damaged from lightning, there is a good chance that the tree will be able to recover. Provide irrigation water and fertilizer to help reduce stress. Corrective pruning should be done to remove damaged wood and to help accelerate recovery. Consult with a certified arborist when it comes to doing work on landscape trees. The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry can help with finding a certified arborist. Wildlife, particularly squirrels, can create problems in landscape trees. When food is scarce squirrels will feed on tree roots, twigs, buds, and inner bark of small limbs. The resulting damage appears as dead branches in the canopy. Open wounds in trees can be entryways for pathogens and lead to more compounding problems later on. Managing squirrels and other wildlife can be tricky. There are several methods available including trapping, use of repellants, birds of prey decoys, and the use of physical barriers like aluminum flashing wrapped around the base of a tree. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) publishes a nuisance wildlife control operator list that can be accessed on their website. It provides a listing of individuals who are licensed by LDWF to control nuisance wildlife. The website can be found at www.wlf. Rootlouisiana.gov.zonestress

Please leave your complete ad and your credit card information on our recorder. We have never had a security problem with ads called in using a credit card. If you prefer, you may send your credit card information by email or fax. Business advertisers are exempt because of the possible complexities with advertising copy over a period of time.

Ads received past deadline, incomplete, with miscalculated costs or unintelligible may not run in that issue and it will be the reader’s responsibility to correct them for the following issue. If the ads are not corrected by the following issue, they will be discarded and payment voided at our office. If your ad does not run, email us for the reason and we will let you know.

We appreciate your business but please understand that publications like ours don’t have the staff to wait on call-in business on a real time basis. Look at the print landscape over the past ten years - you don’t have to go any further than The Sun Herald on the Mississippi Gulf Coast which today barely has 15% of its pre-Katrina Sunday circulation and has no local sales or editorial presence on the coast.

If you or someone you know would like to use our food pantry services, fill out the form on our website, www.louisianaspca.org, and then you will be prompted to schedule an appointment at a time that works for you! If you are picking up from our Plaquemines Parish Campus, walk-ins are welcome as well! New Orleans Campus will be by appointment only, so if you want to pick up supplies from there, be sure you schedule your appointment beforehand.

At the Louisiana SPCA, keeping pets in their homes is a top priority, no matter what. We understand that sometimes life can make things difficult, so we are proud to offer our food pantry services to those that need it most. We are here to offer pet food and supplies to those pet owners who are facing challenging times. In 2021, we were able to deliver over 100,000 pounds of food to pet parents who and animals most in need. Due to some of the hardships presented during the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a dramatic spike in requests for pet food and partnered with local and national groups to expand our pet food pantry. We also donated pet food and supplies to other human food pantries around the Greater New Orleans area to help bring supplies to those who could not make it to our facilities. Throughout 2021, we were able to make a lasting impact on hundreds of pets and their families.

Our food pantry is available at both our New Orleans and Plaquemines Parish campuses, and both provide pet food, toys, and other essential items to help pets stay with their families. Our mission at the Louisiana SPCA is to promote, protect, and advance the well-being of Louisiana’s companion animals, and our food pantry allows us to carry out this mission in an amazing way.

If you are interested in donating to the Food Pantry, please bring unopened packages of pet food or litter to 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd. in Algiers. For more information about services offered at the Louisiana SPCA, please visit www.louisianaspca.org

It’s very difficult for us to personally respond to callers wanting to place a one-time reader ad. In those cases, have your ad already written out and priced out with any additional costs figured in (see ad form on the back page of our paper.), as you would if mailing, faxing or emailing an ad. Misunderstood information in your ad copy could impact the ad’s effectiveness and the total cost might be different than what you might have figured. Ads that include 4 or more individually priced items over $150 or more than 6 priced items total will have to run and be paid for at least twice to give our readers enough time to respond unless it is an estate-type sale being conducted on a one-time basis.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community. If we look familiar to you, it’s because we have all been featured START pets before. While many other START pets have been adopted and are now living happily in their forever homes, we are still waiting for ours to come along. We are hoping to become a member of a loving family, or to be someone’s loyal companion. Contact START and they will tell you all about us and arrange for you to meet us. We have so much to give to those who give us a home.
