Except for a petulant receiver, whose demeanor will change by the end of October or he’ll not play a meaningful role on this squad for the rest of the year, the attitude of this group of Tigers has changed. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll run the table or even finish above 8 and 4, but with New Mexico and Auburn on the slate the next two weeks and a still-unproven Tennessee team coming to Baton Rouge in early October, these Tigers could be a favorite against Florida and Ole Miss and be able to rest two weeks before hosting Saban and the Tide on the traditional first Saturday in November. Seven and one is nearly an even bet for LSU before Alabama comes to Baton Rouge and if GameDay is not in town for that one, I’ll be surprised. Saban has worked his usual magic, turning another rebuilding year into a time of dominance, led by his best defensive player ever and his best quarterback as well. But there are weaknesses there that the Tigers, under Kelly’s keen eye, should be able to exploit and it could be a magic Saturday November 6th in Baton Rouge.

Yes, the secondary is a mishmash of Replacements but the recipe is still one part talent and one part DBU magic and this group of corners and safeties may become as efficient as the dozen or more former Tigers this decade that have found success and stardom in the NFL. The linebackers are cut from the same cloth and if Masson Smith hadn’t jumped on the body-killing turf of the Superdome “grass” Labor Day weekend and ended his season prematurely, this would be the best defensive line in the SEC, bar none, by the middle of the year. True freshmen and transfers are stepping up as the last of Ed Orgeron’s overrated and underperforming offensive line classes try and hang on. But two true freshmen tackles, two sophomores and a battle-tested junior comprise what should be the starting five from this moment on. Special teams have improved dramatically over the last two weekends and the Tigers have adequate kickers to make it back into the top 10 in college football by the end of next month. Remember, Alabama won numerous national championships despite being without a major college quality placekicker and by making a few dumb coverage mistakes on kickoffs and punts.

A Port Sulphur woman pled guilty to theft of oyster violations in the 25th Judicial District of Plaquemines Parish on Aug. 23.

Tony’s Take

WASHER985-629-1752.&

There wasn’t a great deal of excitement earlier this year when LSU hired former Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly to replace the last of the Ed Orgeron era coaches. Kelly, whose demeanor is more along the lines of a Nick Saban than either of the two previous LSU leaders, is a slow study in assimilating Cajun culture. He’s not one to blow up along the sidelines or to roll off hackneyed phrases or be a bumpkin in a multimillion dollar position.

A word about the Mississippi State weekend: this was my first game in the stands since the national championship in 2019 although I took in a couple of contests in the press box in 2020 and took my granddaughter to the Auburn game, last year but she didn’t feel comfortable in the crowd since she hadn’t been to a game since she lost her sight after the 2017 season and so we passed going into the stadium. The concession stands have been drastically improved, beginning last year, and cash is not allowed, only credit cards. It’s still not representative of what a major college football stadium should be offering, however, and the physical facility had better be renovated in the next ten years or fewer fans will be making the trek to Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge traffic control needs to improve as well, especially after the game and the meaner streets of the capital city means less visitors staying around after the game. Baton Rouge is not New Orleans except in criminal activity and if that doesn’t right itself soon, Tiger Stadium will become an architectural artifact in the next 15 to 20 years. I won’t be there to see it, though. After nearly 60 years of attending games in person, I see the futility of trying to improve conditions for families trying to take in an enjoyable event without putting their lives and wallets in harm’s way. More and more people tailgate and don’t attend games; that’s a partial answer but it’s not enough for me. Two more games and I’m done. I know Kelly will do a lot better than that.

STEADY HAND OF KELLY HAS THE TIGERS ON THE RIGHT TRACK

Kelly was left a middlin’ bowl of Irish stew for a roster. He was charged with reconstruction of a team whose performances the past two years rivaled the pandemic that everyone faced in 2020. Slowly, he took charge, hiring two promising coordinators, securing little-known but quality players from the transfer portal and junior colleges and began an incline of achievement that has shown much promise over his first three games.

Kelly can thank the schedule makers for aiding in the construction of this team. A dramatic 99-yard last minute drive against Florida State should have led to an overtime in New Orleans and a probable win that would have placed the Tigers in the Top 25 from the beginning of the season. But being in the SEC means never having to regret an early season loss if the product continues to improve because the SEC will always have two or three of the teams in any meaningful playoff scenario.

The Honorable Judge Michael Clement accepted Lien Troung’s guilty plea for unlawfully harvesting oysters from a private lease and sentenced her to pay a $900 fine plus court costs. Troung was also placed on one-year probation that forbids her from being on board any vessel harvesting, possessing, possessing gear to take, or processing oysters for a period of one year unless the vessel she is on is equipped with a vessel monitoring device that is monitored by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division.

Assistant District Attorney Jerry Lobrano prosecuted the case for the state. Agents participating in the case were Lt. Adam Young, Sgt. Jason Gernados and Corporal Thomas Forehand.

I found these cute bowls with wooden lids and decided I would paint something for the holidays on them. And again, I wanted to do something simple. I wasn’t sure how well the paint would adhere to this piece of wood, as it said it is a food container. I did not do anything to the underside of the lid but I did sand the top to remove the coating that was applied. I then applied a wood sealer, base coated the lid, and drew on my design. I made a wash of different fall colors and brushed the colors on in random areas. Then I based the pumpkin and the leaves, added shading and highlighting. Added the lettering with white and called it a wrap. I am thinking I may go back and add dark shade around the edges of the lid.

Eucalyptus trees are known by many as the primary food source for koala bears. However, lots of folks throughout south Louisiana grow eucalyptus in their backyard with ease. They have interesting characteristics that many gardeners find to be useful in not only design, but also in practicality.

Every plant has common pests that rely on the plant for food and energy production. Defoliating caterpillars, gall forming wasps, glassy-winged sharpshooters, leaf-cutting ants, and whiteflies are some of the commonly listed insect pests of eucalyptus. Anthracnose, armillaria, powdery mildew, heart rot, and phytophthora are some common disease-causing organisms that can be problematic from time to time. A lot of these issues can be prevented through cultural practices. Proper site selection and planting procedures will setup the trees for long term success. Take and submit soil samples to determine soil fertility status and follow the recommendations to fill in any known gaps. Find a sunny location that doesn’t hold water. Plant the trees slightly shallow and dig the planting hole 3-4 times wider than the root ball. Replant using the original, unamended backfill. Cover the disturbed soil with a mulching product and provide a three-point stake to support the tree during high winds until it’s root system can support itself. As the tree grows each year, get out and watch it. Observe it for anything out of the ordinary. Being alerted to a potential pest issue early in the cycle allow for time to organize a management plan.

by

Along with their irregular form, two other notable features of eucalyptus are the foliage and bark characteristics. The leaves are a gorgeous silvery-gray-greenish color and measure one to two inches in diameter. Juvenile leaves are arranged oppositely along long slender stems whereas adult leaves transform and emerge alternately down the stem. Cut flower gardeners will love having access to stem cuttings for use as non-traditional greenery materials. The stems can also be cut, dried, and brought inside for aromatic purposes. A bundle of eucalyptus stems makes for a nice décor both on the eyes and with the nose. The bark has plenty of interest as well. Smaller stems have peeling bark with a reddish-brown gray color and smooth appearance. Older branches are more of a reddish-brown with a rougher appearance.

The biggest downside to growing eucalyptus in Louisiana is going to be cold weather. The closer the growing site is located to the coast the better chance a eucalyptus plant would have during freeze events. Large trees, screen plantings, and buildings can provide enough protection from cold north winds so that a tree may survive. Small plantings can be protected from cold, but keep in mind that silver dollar trees will get tall in short time.

EUCALYPTUSGREAUX

Look for eucalyptus plants at local plant nurseries and garden centers. It’s not a rare plant by any means. However, you won’t find many options in large sizes like that you would for common landscape trees. Check in areas where tropical plants like hibiscus would be found. I’ve even seen silver dollar trees for sale in 4-inch and 6-inch sized containers found in the greenhouse where bedding plant options are kept. Keep your eyes open and be ready because you’ll never know when you might get a chance to bring home a eucalyptus plant.

Eucalyptus trees are mostly grown ornamental plants in the landscape. Well, that and koala bear food too! Silver Dollar Tree, Eucalyptus cinera, is a native of southwestern Asia and Australia. It prefers full sunlight and a well-drained soil. They can reach heights of 50-60 feet in their native range, however, in a temperate climate like Louisiana, they average closer to 20-30 feet tall and 15 feet wide. The growth rate of eucalyptus is fast, especially in the juvenile stages. NC State claims that it can grow fast (6 to 8 feet) in one season! The overall growth habit is somewhat unpredictable but generally they are upright with an open canopy. Of all the eucalyptus trees I’ve seen, no two look the same.

It’s very difficult for us to personally respond to callers wanting to place a one-time reader ad. In those cases, have your ad already written out and priced out with any additional costs figured in (see ad form on the back page of our paper.), as you would if mailing, faxing or emailing an ad. Misunderstood information in your ad copy could impact the ad’s effectiveness and the total cost might be different than what you might have figured. Ads that include 4 or more individually priced items over $150 or more than 6 priced items total will have to run and be paid for at least twice to give our readers enough time to respond unless it is an estate-type sale being conducted on a one-time basis.

START foster homeless rescues fostered the homes of our volunteers they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community. Rescued adult cats are so interesting. While we know the whole life story of some, others are a complete mystery when they come to us. At first all we know is where they were found and that no one is looking for them. We have to imagine the rest of their story. They can tell us a lot if we give them time to do so. We begin with a vet visit that lets us know if they have been well cared for. We provide the veterinary care they need and place them in a foster home. There we find out if they get along well with other cats, dogs, children, and if they prefer a quiet home to one with a lot of activity. They let us know if they like to cuddle or prefer to have their own space most of the time. These adult cats deserve a second chance. Here are four you may want to consider if you are looking for a good companion.

It is important to understand that non-emergency requests may take longer to receive a response because emergencies take precedence. Please be patient with those are that are trying to respond to your complaint and assist if you can. If it is safe, you may attempt to secure a stray animal yourself and transport them to the animal shelter. We appreciate your concern and willingness to go above and beyond to make sure that our animals are safe and loved. We would not be able to care for them the way that we do if we did not receive calls to the non-emergency and emergency lines about the community’s fur babies. Those calls have saved many lives!

Strays and Animal Emergencies

Have you ever seen a stray dog walking along the road and wondered how you could help them find their home? Or maybe you’ve witnessed an animal emergency that needed immediate attention. If so, it’s important to know who to call and what to do in each situation.

Please leave your complete ad and your credit card information on our recorder. We have never had a security problem with ads called in using a credit card. If you prefer, you may send your credit card information by email or fax. Business advertisers are exempt because of the possible complexities with advertising copy over a period of time.

We appreciate your business but please understand that publications like ours don’t have the staff to wait on call-in business on a real time basis. Look at the print landscape over the past ten years - you don’t have to go any further than The Sun Herald on the Mississippi Gulf Coast which today barely has 15% of its pre-Katrina Sunday circulation and has no local sales or editorial presence on the coast.

Any animal related non-emergency, such as a roaming stray animal, can be reported to 504-821-2222. Previously those reports could be handled by 311 but it has since changed to the aforementioned number, so make sure to save the non-emergency line into your phone for easy access. Animal related non emergencies can consist of roaming stray animals that are not in immediate danger or not severely injured. You would need to contact an emergency line, 911, for stray animals that are in the middle of a busy road, attempting to attack or have attacked bystanders, abandoned by their owner without access to food or water, in extremely poor living conditions that are life threatening, or they need lifesaving medical attention immediately. It is important to know the difference between an emergency and a non-emergency so that the emergency line is free which will allow for quicker

of an animal emergency that involves your own animal being injured and needing immediate medical care, please transport your animal yourself to the nearest animal hospital. It is important to know the animal hospitals in your area in case of an emergency because it is your responsibility to seek care for your injured animal. If you do not have transportation, that is when you may call 911 to request assistance in transporting them to your nearest animal hospital. Be advised that you also need to arrange your own transportation as well so that you can be with your animal at the time emergency resources arrive at the hospital with them.

Ads received past deadline, incomplete, with miscalculated costs or unintelligible may not run in that issue and it will be the reader’s responsibility to correct them for the following issue. If the ads are not corrected by the following issue, they will be discarded and payment voided at our office. If your ad does not run, email us for the reason and we will let you know.
