Last week, the very best sports announcer of all time passed away at 94. Vince (Vin Scully) was a legend.

A ton has been written about this man….the youngest to ever broadcast a World Series game (25), more than 60 years behind the microphone, etc. What we have lost with the passing of Scully is the last of the self-effacing broadcasters, a man who knew his job depended on knowing human nature better than sports statistics. Today, there are hundreds of competent sports announcers who are walking encyclopedias on a huge range of sports statistics or spinners of tales when they were in the game or shared a locker room with managers and owners. But none of them are anything like Vin Scully.

Vin Scully only cared about entertaining and informing on a less intense level. When Scully moved to Los Angeles in 1958 with the Dodgers, he began a love affair with baseball fans of not only the Dodgers but other teams. How could you not like a guy whose ego was checked in at the broadcast booth door and who understood that the Reseda housewife and the Orange County dowager would also grow to appreciate baseball in particular and “dem Bums” in general.

Scully looked like Norman Rockwell and could have posed for a number of his famous magazine covers. Unassuming with a normal build, his conversational, non-hype broadcast style would be laughed at today. But Scully, reaching hundreds of thousands of Southern Californians on the old $10 plastic transistor radios that were as necessary in the late ’50s and ‘60s as cellphones are today, could regale the sophisticated and the uninitiated equally with his nearly country-style stories of players, places and sports news.

No broadcaster ever depended on a portable radio more than Scully, whose knowledge and style formed the background basis for three generations of sports fans. Not only were the radios all over town but also in the stadium, where virtually every fan carried one.

The redhead in the press box could have fun with anyone from six to 96 and make the tedious game fun and lively. The Dodgers usually had a competitive team during Scully’s years but even their bad seasons could be turned into a positive under the dulcet tones of Scully.

You couldn’t tell by his emotions who Scully was rooting for. A press box remains inviolate for its occupants not to cheer openly for one team or another but not the average announcer’s booth. Scully was the professional’ s professional, a man so ingrained with consideration, indoctrinated with discipline and dedicated to the fun and sometimes oddball side of baseball that it was always a pleasure and learning experience to hear Vin Scully….even for a diehard Giants fan like me.

There won’t be any more Vin Scullys in our world in our lifetime. A perfect cross between the late Danny Kaye and your favorite male relative growing up, Vin Scully didn’t have to dodge anything in his life because of his beliefs and actions. I firmly believe he slid in safely at his heavenly Home plate. And a pleasant good evening to you, Mr. Scully.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Five Mississippi Men Cited For Recreational Fishing Violations in Plaquemines Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited five men for alleged recreational fishing violations in Plaquemines Parish on Aug. 3.

Agents cited Timothy Jones, 60, of McComb, Miss., Ellis R. Martin, 57, of Summit, Miss., Thomas Firth, 56, of Tylertown, Miss., and Steven Riley, 59, of Gulfport, Miss., for over the daily limit of catfish. Agents also cited Clifton Clark, 44, Gulfport, Miss., and Riley and Jones for not possessing a non-resident basic fishing license. Agents were on patrol responding to a complaint when they contacted the five on the Mississippi River levee just south of the Empire Locks actively fishing with rods and reels. Agents found them in possession of 665 blue catfish in multiple ice chests.

After further investigation, agents determined that Riley, Jones, Martin and Firth caught over the daily limit of catfish per angler. Riley, Jones and Clark also failed to purchase a non-resident basic fishing license. Agents seized the 665 catfish and donated them to Hunters for the Hungry.

The daily limit of catfish is 100 fish in the aggregate of blue, channel, and flathead catfish.

Taking over the daily limit of catfish carries a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Not possessing a non-resident basic fishing license brings up to a $350 fine.

The men may also face civil restitution for the replacement value of the catfish totaling $493.73.

Agents participating in the case are Lt. Adam Young and Senior Agent Austin Landry.

Corinne Akins is the Garden and Sustainability Coordinator for Belle Chasse Academy. She has been in this position for 5 years and has tirelessly committed herself to providing experiential project based learning opportunities to our 850 students through nutrition based learning, garden based learning and environmental education. Belle Chasse Academy is a unique school in that it is housed aboard a Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base. Its population, as military dependents, are highly transient and as a result cultivating a rich school culture is not easy. The school day programming, afterschool programming, Saturday family programming and Community Service days that Ms. Akins provides the students and their families cultivates a sense of community belonging for our students, their families and the greater base population. Further, she has offered students hands on learning opportunities that allow them to be active adders in their families, school and greater community.

Ms. Akins has cultivated an Herb Pollinator Garden, a large-scale production garden and an interactive learning garden. She manages, with student helpers, a school-wide recycling initiative and school-wide composting. She partners with the school’s health teacher to deliver school-wide lessons on nutritious eating and how growing our own food can be best for our bodies and minds and with the school’s culinary arts instructor to teach students how to use the healthy produce they grow to fuel their bodies.

In 2017, in partnership with the Project Green Schools, she implemented the Green Warriors at Belle Chasse Academy who recycled and composted over 18,000 pounds of waste at the school. In 2018, in partnership with Project Green Schools, she created an 850 square foot pollinator butterfly garden as an interactive teacher resource.

Corinne Akins is a change maker for Belle Chasse Academy and the community. She works hard to instill in students a sense of environmental responsibility and care that our world truly needs and is deserving of this award.

72nd Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo 2022 With a heavy mix of rain forecasted the first day started like this. I am just getting off meniscus repaire but I tried pushing it a few weeks earlier. That was not my problem I have a bad sciatic nerve that is affecting my entire lower right side. I had Aiden Babin with me. He was never considering this event but I talked him into it. The storms kept us close and we came in early. He was a great help jumping up and down for the trolling motor. That was all the time I needed to find out I could not fish this year.

It is the tarpon rodeo so this is how we have to weight them. This one was 192 pounds.

They are too long to hang from the weigh station scale under the tent The weather was too rough for many to get offshore but a few managed to do some offshore fishing. A tuna was caught. Do not know the final numbers.

My next report will get more in detail.

As for Aiden he finished fishing with his father. They were doing like many just catching and spending good family time together. As they were coming in he told his dad to go to a spot right near the marina he and I had fished our first stop out that wet, short, painful first day. This would be the very last stop. On his first cast he told his dad “this is a good one”. Little did he know his world had just changed. He landed a just under 27 inch red fish that had the heaviest weight under 27” for the first place trophy in that category.

Later that evening his dad made my whole weekend worthwhile even though I did not fish. He thanked me for asking his son to get into the rodeo. He said he could not have done it without me. I made his weekend great and full of memories. Life is Good!

Friday was a lot better although we still had showers. All I could do is hang around and look at the fish coming in to the weigh station. How could you resist seeing this. Unfortunately I did was not in a position to get names. I will try to get some on the next report.

So how have you been dealing with all the rain and heat we have been having? When I am not at work, I have been trying to get some painting done, along with cleaning the house, and trying my best to make sure the grass doesn’t take over. My backyard is so soggy, I actually have to cut the grass with the weed eater instead of the lawn mower. I am done with the rain!

Today I decided to paint a colorful happy little Gnome.

Something that will put a smile on my face when the skies open up again and rain is pouring down. I love the Pistachio Mint, Purple Cow, and Indian Turquoise together. Such happy colors. He stands 7” tall and is 1/8” thick. These would make really cute ornaments for your Christmas tree or to give as a small gift. They can be painted in any color and personalized.

I am working on some Fall and Halloween Gnomes now.

After those are done I will be working on Christmas Gnomes!

I haven’t decided if I am going to put a magnet on the back of this one so I can put it on the fridge or glue a small wood block to the back so it will stand up. Guess I can always paint another one and have both. I will have some of these Gnomes available at the Academy of Our Lady Craft Show. So don’t forget to come by and visit all the crafters that will be there. But,if you would like to have a Gnome before November 5th, you can always email me to place your order.

Words to GREAUX by FALL VEGETABLE GARDENING Believe it or not, summer will be coming to an end next month. As kids start going back to school, it’s time to start thinking about a backyard vegetable garden for the fall/winter growing season. If you have never grown a fall garden, then check it out. The days are shorter (literally) and the weather is much more comfortable. You also get to grow a completely different set of crops for the fall along with a few springtime Will Afton staples. Whether you are an experienced gardener or just getting started, now is the time to start planning a fall vegetable garden.

Start preparing the garden by removing old mulch, unproductive plants from the previous season, and any unwanted vegetation. Sometimes plants like bell peppers, eggplants, tomatoes and okra may still be producing this time of year. Instead of pulling them up, work around them and allow them to continue. Once most of the vegetation has been removed, start cultivating the soil to prepare the planting beds. Next, start planning the layout of the garden. Start thinking of what vegetables will go where. Go ahead and take the time to take good notes. Draw a diagram and label it with the date. This information will come in handy over the years as you practice crop rotation in the garden.

Vegetables grown in the fall are different from what gardeners grow in the spring. Some crops can be grown in both spring and fall. Get a copy of the LSU AgCenter’ s Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide. Check with your local extension office or visit www.lsuagcenter.com to download a digital copy. This publication contains valuable information on planting dates and recommended cultivars of all the different vegetable crops grown in Louisiana. Some of the crops that are seeded in late August and early September include snap beans, lima beans, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, Swiss chard, Chinese cabbage, collards, cucumbers, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustards, English peas, Irish potatoes, radishes, and rutabagas.

Start looking for seeds of these vegetable plants to plant in the garden now. Later in the season you will start to see transplants of the more common fall vegetable crops.

To help ensure success with your fall garden, follow proper cultural practices. Plant spacing is an important concept that allows enough room for the plants to grow and develop normally but it also makes sure we don’t plant things too far apart where weeds tend to grow and become troublesome. Water is another important factor to think about. In cases where rain doesn’t provide adequate irrigation, you will need to supplement. Purchase a garden hose that reaches from the water faucet to the garden. Fertilizer is a must for productive gardens. Whether you prefer either organic or conventional fertilizer types, apply fertilizer at planting and again later in the season as a side dress application.

Fall vegetable gardening can be a very rewarding experience, but you will never know if you don’t give it a try. So, get out there, pull some weeds, and grow you a garden!

Pet Sitting and Boarding

If you need to take a business trip or are planning a family getaway, you may have to board your pets while you’re away. Leaving your critters behind can be as stressful for you as it is for them, but it doesn’t have to be. Options include pet sitting, pet boarding and doggy daycare. Some facilities do all three!

When it comes time to pick a doggy daycare or boarding facility for your pet, you want to make sure your dog is comfortable wherever they are without their humans. Bring your dog to visit beforehand so they can get to know the team and become comfortable in the new environment Some things to pay attention to when looking for a doggy daycare or boarding facility may include: • How much socialization your dog will receive and if it will match their personality • Take a tour of the facility. Can you picture your dog having a good time here?

• What are the hours? Make sure the drop off and pick up times work with your schedule • What immunizations are required? If you prefer, you may send your credit card information by email or fax. Business advertisers are exempt because of the possible complexities with advertising copy over a period of time.

It’s very difficult for us to personally respond to callers wanting to place a one-time reader ad. In those cases, have your ad already written out and priced out with any additional costs figured in (see ad form on the back page of our paper.), as you would if mailing, faxing or emailing an ad. Misunderstood information in your ad copy could impact the ad’s effectiveness and the total cost might be different than what you might have figured. Ads that include 4 or more individually priced items over $150 or more than 6 priced items total will have to run and be paid for at least twice to give our readers enough time to respond unless it is an estate-type sale being conducted on a one-time basis.
