THE NIL - BEGINNING OF NIL AMATEUR SPORTS

When a group of college athletes proposed a way to fund college athletes during their years in school, I thought it was a great idea. Colleges and the sports market have kept hard-working students on the poverty end of the supply chain for the past forty years or so. Changes in the way schools recruit, train, indoctrinate and work their student/athletes has caused many of them to leave school early for a professional career or leave school completely as those individuals have created a family of their own or have family at home who need them to either help out in person or financially.

Enter NIL….Name, Likeness and Image. Use my name, my likeness, my image and pay me something for the right to market my physical or intellectual property. Don’t make me take money under the table or live on the financial edge while my skills and personality make millions for your enterprise.

Great concept. But GREED said, “I like it.” I can recruit with it. I can keep top prospects in tow and away from my competition even before they become a commodity at good ‘ol State U. “ So now high school seniors and younger are being promised millionaire status in some cases to attend a certain school and play ball.

NIL should be eliminating the ridiculous 11.2 scholarships limitation for college baseball and help put bread on the table for squad members in all sports, including women’s competition. Instead, it is leading a two-headed monster that is hell-bent on eliminating in-person major college sports fandom by 1) taking away much of the hunger inside an athlete’s body and 2) Eliminating natural regional rivalries in favor of more billion dollar television deals. Add this to the insane increase in concession and parking prices, the overvalued retail sports jersey and paraphernalia industry and the tough economic times we face and even Daddy with Buddy Son will have to rethink their real time several hundred dollar day of sports interaction in person.

Some schools and conferences are toying with a structured NIL system so most competitors will face some financial relief during their one to four-year college sports career that leaves them little time outside of training, performing or studying to do anything else.

However, don’t bet on it. With the creation of super conferences, including the SEC, the days of your father’s sports enthusiasm are going away rapidly. It won’t be long until prices, attitudes and public safety around sports environments will keep all but the most well-heeled, well-connected and well-protected individuals from attending games in physical surroundings that will look nothing like the stadia we now fill for LSU, Alabama and other sports powerhouses.

Schools like LSU, who care little for the average fan, will suffer first as the dollar will fill the coffers but not Tiger Stadium with active fannies. Most will remain home, unable to enjoy the features that made attending live college sports fun and exciting. They’ll watch on t.v, mostly for the entertainment value, then turn it off at halftime to do something else….sort of like the way Southern Californians treats most sporting events. Take the zest out of the sports quest and you have another ho-hum pasttime, developing little loyalty or passion. Why should it not happen? Are people that stupid to continue to spend hundreds for junk every week or month? Maybe so. But it will be nil for many of us who remember when sports were fun to anticipate and attend. Now, we’ll just tune in to social media and few will get stoked about the on-field performances. I had mentioned in earlier writings that this would be my last regular season to buy season tickets for LSU football. I sold half my tickets to a close associate of new football coach Brian Kelly this year and if he wants them all moving forward he’ll have the opportunity. I would like to continue my treks to Baton Rouge but that city’s crime profile, an unyielding sports hierarchy at Baton Rouge, a Don Quixote approach to actually improving Tiger Stadium, even for the high rollers who don’t want boxes let alone for the average fan, a mixture of poor marketing and entertainment values with a total sellout from concession sources and you have a recipe for failure that’s a lot closer than the Tiger decision makers want to admit. If it’s all about the money, honey, you conveniently forget that those with the disposable income you seek are more likely to walk away from this coming aberation, leaving the in-person “crowd” to consist of freebie passes to those who don’t mind the increasing inconveniences and lack of value that major college sports is preparing.

I fished for Venice fishing lodge. We had 3 boats running with 9 guys, 3 per boat. I wanted to fish the skinny water for some meat knowing the slot bite was going to be very challenging. The slot bite has been difficult lately due to various conditions.

After these two everything slowed down. We were loosing bait to little fish and the guys wanted to look elsewhere. We bounced around looking.

Continued from... Fishing Reports on pp 2 After going to many places I went back close to where I started. We finally got a legal sized trout. The hardheads ,small trout,, croaker, etc. were keeping us busy and thinning out the bait.

This seemed to be the only place we could find any good fish but the guys wanted to try other places so I made some more moves looking for action. I found some guys looking for bulls. They said the bulls had slowed down but there was still some happening. All we could find was trout and nothing big.

One of the other boats with us came by and had me follow him to where he was fishing for bulls. We made the run and found gaftops and sharks. I made several moves looking for signs of bull red activity. The other boat headed in looking for slots before heading in looking for some slot fish action before heading to the barn. As we were getting ready to head in I hear “There he is!” The fight was on. He had the drag light and I thought it was a big shark. After a minor adjustment we had a reasonable battle rolling. This 40 incher was a great way to end the day.

We stopped to see the other boat. Turned out they were in the same place we had started in the morning. They picked up a pair of reds but it was hot and they were heading to the barn. The bite was still slow but I stayed for a third time in this place today. It payed off. We found a nice black drum and a good flounder before we headed in.

Back at the lodge we compared notes with the other boats.

It was time for a celebratory ice cold beer. We did well for the day. I have no idea what is happening with the redfish. The dry weather we have had is lowering the river early. I think they may be trying to move in but are confused due to the temperature we are having. In the spring we look for water in the high 50’s before finding fish. I am starting to look at the water temps to see if that could be a key to the feeding habitat.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries Three Men Cited For Illegal Oyster Harvest in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited three men for alleged oyster violations on June 27 in Plaquemines Parish.

Agents cited Long Nguyen, 68, of Port Sulphur, Wayne P. Williams, 57, of Empire, and Trung Do, 54, of Buras, for unlawfully taking oysters off a private lease and failing to have written permission. Nguyen was also cited for a logbook violation.

Agents were on patrol around Grand Bayou located near Buras responding to theft complaints from local leaseholders when they witnessed three occupants in a 24-foot skiff harvesting oysters by hand.

Agents made contact with the occupants and found them harvesting oysters from another person’s private lease without written permission from the leaseholder. Nguyen also failed to record proper harvest information on his Department of Health time and temperature log sheet.

Unlawfully taking oysters off a private lease and failing to have written permission carry up to a $950 fine and 120 days in jail for each offense. The logbook violation brings a $25 fine and up to 10 days in jail.

The men could also have their oyster harvester licenses revoked by LDWF for up to one year. The violators could also be sentenced to perform 40 hours of community service and only be allowed to harvest oysters from a vessel that is equipped with a vessel monitoring device for up to one year.

Agents seized 25 sacks of oysters and returned them to the private lease water bottoms. LDWF placed the vessel on seizure order until disposition of case in court.

Agents participating in the case are Sgt. Jason Gernados and Senior Agent Shea Schexnaydre. The case will be forwarded to District Attorney Charles Ballay for prosecution.

The rainy season has finally come. I don’t know about you but my backyard is like a swimming pool. I did talk to someone about subsurface drainage in the backyard but they are one month out on jobs and with all this rain, well it won’t happen anytime soon. And to make matters worse, I have been extremely sick.

So that means I have not felt like sitting at the craft table. So there is nothing painted this week. Infact, I don’t even feel like digging through photos on the computer to see what I find that I haven’t shown you before. This bug has really kicked to the ground.

This is a bouquet I made with 4 leftover carnations and I cut some of the little flowers from the bush in my front yard.

Totally simple but oh so cute. I did add some leftover myrtle to the bouquet also. I don’t believe in throwing flowers away. There is always a way they can be used.

I know this is a really short column and I am very sorry but, as I said before this bug has got me down big time. With that being said, I am going back to bed. I hope you all stay healthy and well. Until next time.....What will your next project be? Mine I don’t know. but it will be fun.

Words to GREAUX by REPLACE SPRING TOMATO VARIETIES WITH HEAT TOLERANT TYPES Seasoned gardeners know that once daytime temperatures start averaging above 85-90°F spring planted tomatoes start going downhill fast. The month of June showed up that! If diseases like southern blight, early blight, late blight, and bacterial wilt haven’t set in and caused Will Afton severe leaf drop or plant death, then you have probably noticed flowers dry up and fall off without setting fruit. Blossom drop in tomato is not caused by a pathogen, insect, or nutritional deficiency. Researchers have determined that the actual cause is closely related to day and night time temperature. When daytime temperatures reach above 85°F and night time temperatures above 72°, flowers will abort and drop off the plant before they have a chance to get fertilized. Older varieties like heirlooms tend to be a lot more sensitive than many hybrid tomato varieties but even hybrids will become susceptible once it gets warm enough. In order to help avoid this phenomenon it is recommended to plant a second crop of “heat set” tomatoes.

Heat set, hot set, or heat tolerant tomatoes are bred for their tolerance to high temperatures and perform well in Louisiana. More often than not these varieties show relevance to heat in their names. There are several of these varieties that perform in Louisiana growing conditions.

The varieties ‘Sunmaster’, ‘Heat Wave II’, Sun Master’, and ‘Talladaga’ produce smaller 7-8 ounce sized fruit while ‘Solar Set’, ‘Florida 91’, ‘Solar Fire’, and ‘Sun Leaper’ produce larger 9-10 ounce fruit. By planting heat set varieties at the end of the spring season, you can take advantage of the cooler fall temperatures to enjoy tomatoes well into November. Check with your local nursery or home improvement center to see what is available to you.
