Tony’s Take

If ever there was a football program in the SEC that yo-yo’s more than the Auburn Tigers, I don’t know what it is. From national championships and Heisman winners, the Tigers are even more squirrelly than LSU. It begins with the Auburn Tigers using an eagle to be their visible mascot, flying that poor bird from a flagpole above the stadium’s west side to landing on the 50-yard line. Auburn is also the Plainsmen, as their Alabama location rests on what passes for redneck Plains. What is plain, however, that this team soars like an eagle one year and then sinks like the 2022 stock market the next. They really haven’t had a great football coach since Pat Dye; just a couple of offensive yahoos and an unknown Idaho transfer who is under more fire than Donald Trump.

These misfits hosted the LSU Tigers last weekend and the results weren’t pretty, especially in the second half. A team partially led by an LSU transfer at quarterback and a true freshman as his backup can’t do much right or efficiently, while Auburn’s former 21st century Bo…Nix, that is, is plying his signal-calling trade in Eugene these days for the Oregon Ducks. Auburn has a Tank at running back but the rest of the Auburn tank is nearly empty. Except for senior long snapper Jacob Quattlebaum, who is the son of my colleague in Enterprise, Alabama, I have no feelings for this squad at all. Quattlebaum should be able to snare an NFL contract after this year, if for no other reason than he will be snapping on a lot of punts and field goal attempts for this current group of football misfits.

The LSU boys will be 4 and 1 and finally ranked nationally when they host one of the hottest quarterbacks in college football in an 11 AM game this weekend. Tennessee may not be able to beat Nick Saban but they finally put the Swamp Buggy Florida Gators in their place last month. Tennessee and Georgia are leading a topsy-turvy SEC East this season while ‘Bama continues to do its thing on its way to its annual semifinal national game sets in the West. LSU could become the number two team in the West this month and should be as they won’t play three of the West teams until November. The only better West team besides Alabama right now is Ole Miss and the Tigers host them this month. Arkansas and certainly Texas A&M are very beatable (see last weekend) and Saban’s machine has to come to Louisiana this year, not that it makes that much difference. But Coach Kelley, I’m certain, would like a measure of redemption for the national championship beatdown Alabama bestowed on him when he coached Notre Dame a decade ago.

Oddsmakers will set Tennessee up as a small favorite against the Tigers on the road, but Tennessee always struggles here and an early morning game favors defensive players as offensive units usually take a bit longer to warm up and that favors LSU, the better defensive squad and perhaps second only to Alabama. But the development and chemistry classes of the Tiger secondary is a positive sign for a set of players that lacks an All-American for the first time in more than a decade in Baton Rouge and the five linebackers are becoming the best in the SEC, led by a savvy senior and a true freshman who could become the next Devin White or Will Anderson in the league. Even without Masson Smith, the LSU line is one of the best in the country. Once the offense finds wide receivers again, this could be more than a rebounding year for the Tigers. A favorable schedule helps and a down year for Alabama defensive players also helps. The luck and the pluck of the Irishman is beginning to emerge and the rest of the SEC had better start paying attention.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries

LDWF Agents Investigating Boating Fatality in St. Tammany Parish

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents are investigating a fatal boating incident that occurred in St. Tammany Parish on Sept. 22.

The body of Ricky Hodgson, 72, of Pearl River, was recovered from Lake Pontchartrain around 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 22.

Agents learned that Hodgson and another passenger on the boat were recreationally trawling for shrimp in Lake Pontchartrain near the twinspans when their trawl was stuck around midnight. Hodgson and the other boater tried to get the trawl unstuck when the boat capsized putting both men into the water without wearing personal flotation devices.

The other boater survived the incident while Hodgson passed away after entering the water.

LDWF will be the lead investigative agency for this boating fatality. Hodgson’s body was turned over to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office to determine an official cause of death.

First graders in Mrs. Nguyen’s class created their own rainbow fish during Leadership Academy Week.

METRO PLUS FISHING REPORT

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Braud’s class observe tadpoles in line with our science inquiry model and our school culture strategy of building curiosity. Pictured left to right are Oliver English, Camila Rodriguez, Mariah Hamilton, and Aviana Martinez.

Gary and I worked hard yesterday and decided to treat ourselves today. We did not get started as early as we would have wanted but it was a no pressure type of day. With things in the transition stage from summer to fall and hot water to cooler the fish have been moving and have been hard to come by. This was our best looking fish of the day and it went back to make another angler happy some day.

As we bounced around looking and playing with shorts I got hit by sizable fish when I first saw it I knew this stud was going in the box for sure. I wanted to weigh it at the dock.

When I got in a few guys were just heading out and with a slack tide coming on and it getting breezier I figured they would struggle a bit. I decided to make their day by giving them this stud sheepshead and a 23 inch redfish I had on ice.

First graders, Brianna Heape and Tabor Kyle, in Mrs. Nguyen’s class are learning about the different systems of the body. Here Mrs. Nguyen shows Brianna and Tabor the muscular system.

Students in Mrs. Desselle’s introduction to art class bring their visions to life in ceramic form with coil pots. What a great example of Habit 2--Begin With the End in Mind!

Aleejah Duplessis is smoothing the inside of her originally shaped coil pot.

Charlotte Montano, Caylee Brusstar, Meredith Box, Robert Bivens Lilly Miller, Jaiden Riley, Finley Palm and Christiano Afaisen Dalia Arreola is rolling out another coil to add to her coil pot. Senia McCall puts the final touch to her ceramic coil pot. Vincent Dominique and Macai Dorliae are creating coil pots in Intro Art class. Also in Mrs. Braud’s class, Gelilah Gibson and Ya’niah Dobatse count objects during math. They may be using ten frames, but these students are working on Habit 1--Putting first things first! Ricky Trinidad Abigail Hovey Evan Adams, Alexander ColonReyes Bailey Bumblis, Drexel Williams, Simone Baskir Ian Reneau, Julio Rodriguez, Johnathon Gist Dildoseb Oiterong and Tyler Renza Azaivirian Thompson, Anderson Shaw Za’Ehani Woody, Stephen Manning, Hannah Larsen Third graders put Habit 6: Synergize into motion with the help of Ms. Vegas and Ms. Lanier. Students leaned on one another’s strengths to build rain gauges for their study of Weather and Climate, an important unit for students living in South Louisiana. The students in Mrs. Cummings’ 2nd grade class used their leadership skills in measurement practice for Eureka Math2 Module 1. They worked together to figure out the difference in one another’s heights. Seventh grade students created Rangoli designs using stencils for their Friday Try-day activity. Students had to work together in groups, making design decisions and sharing the work load.

Hi, Everyone!

Did you get a chance to go to one of the festivals this past weekend? I did, and the weather was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! My granddaughter and her Eaglette team mates, along with the Cheerleaders and Band from Archbishop had the honor of opening the final day of O.L.P.H. Fair. It was a beautiful morning, with a nice breeze blowing and lots of shade from the oak trees. The students did a fantastic job, as they always do. There were a lot of proud parents and grandparents cheering them on. After their performances, I was one of the first in line to get something to eat. I left there happy, full and totally satisfied with the time I spent there. So glad the Fairs and Festivals are coming back.

Since this was such a wonderful weekend and it truly felt like Fall, I decided to share my Fall tag with you now instead of waiting till later. I really like this piece. It is a simple design but once you add a few background additions and some embellishments, it changes the whole piece. The line drawing was done by Tracy Moreau, I chose the background, colors of paints, and the embellishments. She and other artists are constantly challenging us to create on our own. Sometimes with just a line drawing, an idea, or a color palette and what items we should draw for that palette. Sometimes I sit here and scratch my head wondering what I am going to do. Not this time! I knew exactly what colors I wanted to use and how my background should look. Yes, I am pleased with this one. No doubts, no I should have it the other way or used a different color. Nope, none of that. First I painted the tag Bleached Sand, I made a wash with a purple, green, orange, and brown. I really thinned the paint a lot so the colors would not be so bright, I made sure when I picked the wash on my brush it was not totally saturated. I blotted it on the towel to get rid of the excess. I then randomly applied the wash over the base coated surface. Add the pattern and started painting. I was having so much fun doing this piece I finished the entire project in almost 5 hours. Keep in mind, this includes drying the fresh paint with a blow dryer, not answering the phone when it rang, not getting up for any reason whatsoever, No interruptions! Wish I could paint like that all the time, but we all know those days are far and few between.

Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.......I am working on things for a couple of craft shows. I have several already started on the painting table and they will ALL be Fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson!

As we moved around we found someshort reds. I like seeing these at this time of the year. These will be our winter and spring keepers. They grow an inch a month until they get to 16/17 inches. The one in this picture is about 20 inches.

This guy could tell a story that I would love to hear. He had awesome power. His head was smashed in but he lived and is still doing well. It also went back for another person to enjoy the awesome power this fighter had. I wish I nlknew how it got his head so badly deformed.

After taking a break to watch the saints game we went back out to finish our adventures. We decided to see what the Empire jetties were holding on an incoming tide. We found more short reds and then this big nasty black drum decided to give Gary a run for his money. It ran him around the boat at least once and made one good run before coming to our net.

Overall we had a good relaxing day on the water doing what we like to do.

Life is Good!

As the days get shorter and temperatures get cooler, the lawn will start to prepare itself for the oncoming cool season. Eventually, all growth slows down before the plant goes completely dormant. Adjust your routine to help ensure that the lawn stays healthy during this process. Unneeded stresses during this time have an effect when the turfgrass comes out of dormancy in the spring.

Let’s start with mowing. Keep mowing often enough to remove 1/3 of the grass plant each time. You also need to use a sharp mowing blade. It’s usually this time of year, late in the summer season, where I start seeing torn grass blades. Sharp blades will cut the grass but dull blades will tear. You can easily see a general browning in the lawn when dull blades are used. This is due to the torn leaves turning necrotic due to excessive tissue damage. Keep a few extra lawn mower blades on hand for easy replacement in times like this. They are relatively cheap and straight forward to install.

Be careful with lawn fertilizers. Many companies will advertise “Winterizer” fertilizers this time of year but beware of adding any extra nitrogen after the first of September. Remember that nitrogen makes plants grow and lawns are naturally slowing down and preparing for dormancy during this time of year. Fertilizing too late in the year with a high nitrogen fertilizer is counterproductive. Winterizer type lawn fertilizers are labeled as such because they include extra potassium. Potassium (K) is a macronutrient and when found in sufficient concentrations within a plant make it hardier to cooler weather. If you are deficient in potassium you can look to using muriate of potash (0-0-60) to address it. The only way to know if you are deficient is to have your soil tested. Don’t guess, soil test!

Late nitrogen can spread lawn disease. Typical fall weather patterns are optimum for several lawn diseases including large patch (brown patch). In fact, you should be very observant in the fall so that lawn disease problems can be caught early. Large patch starts out as small dead areas that increase in size overnight especially during rainy periods or stretches of humid weather. Apply a fungicide that contain either of these active ingredients: azoxystrobin, propiconazole, myclobutanil. They are all labeled for use on turfgrass areas around the home. Some of the trade names you will see in stores include: BioAdvanced Fungus Control, Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide II, Fertilome F-Stop, Green Light Fung-Away and Scott’s DiseaseX. Make sure to treat the entire yard to control the disease and prevent other areas from becoming infected.

Lastly, think about weed control. Soon there will be a whole new crop of cool season weeds that grow during the fall and winter months. Prevent cool season annual weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide now. A popular favorite is Dimension (dithiopyr). It can be found at local feed stores and garden centers under the name Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper II. For general post emergent weed control, you can use a 4-way herbicide like Fertilome Weed Free Zone. Just remember to read and follow label instructions before applying.

Subaru LOVES Pets Month

Bryan Subaru of New Orleans will be celebrating Subaru Loves Pets month all of October with the New Orleans Campus and Plaquemines Campus of the Louisiana SPCA. Subaru recognizes the need for all shelter dogs to find a loving home but emphasizes the importance for shelter dogs with special needs to find one as well. These dogs are lovingly referred to as Underdogs and thanks to Subaru, 31 Underdogs will now have an adoption fee of only $10 all of October!

A shelter dog becomes an Underdog for several reasons, but they all have in common that they just need a little extra love. Typically, an Underdog has either a medical issue, needs socialization, is elderly, or has been available for adoption longer than most. The medical issue could range from heartworms to an injury sustained before they came into our care. Whatever the case, the LA/SPCA provides treatment for that shelter dog and encourages the community to still adopt them by categorizing them as an Underdog. If a shelter dog comes to us as timid and shy where they need extra special loving to feel comfortable, they will be placed as an Underdog. This also occurs when they are elderly, because unfortunately, it is harder to adopt out our senior dogs when there are also puppies available. Finally, if a shelter dog has been available for adoption longer than the other residents then they are promoted to Underdog to encourage the community to adopt as soon as they can so we can see them find their perfect home.

On that day, Subaru invites dog lovers to do something special for their dogs and encourages the nation to adopt an Underdog to make their day! This is an incredible opportunity to make an Underdog’s life because once they find their fur-ever home they will finally know the love they have always deserved. Make sure to mark your calendar for this special day and help us celebrate alongside Byran Subaru all October long!

START volunteers and rescues are hoping many pets will find their forever homes during this event. However, why wait a month to adopt a wonderful cat or kitten? Here are seven great reasons to adopt right away! Archie, Dexter, Dottie, Leia, Goldie, Loki and Luke invite you to contact START to find out how you can meet and adopt them now in. All START pets for adoption are spayed/ neutered, tested, vaccinated and microchipped.

IMPORTANT: ADS SENT OVER THE PHONE

Please leave your complete ad and your credit card information on our recorder. We have never had a security problem with ads called in using a credit card. If you prefer, you may send your credit card information by email or fax. Business advertisers are exempt because of the possible complexities with advertising copy over a period of time.

It’s very difficult for us to personally respond to callers wanting to place a one-time reader ad. In those cases, have your ad already written out and priced out with any additional costs figured in (see ad form on the back page of our paper.), as you would if mailing, faxing or emailing an ad. Misunderstood information in your ad copy could impact the ad’s effectiveness and the total cost might be different than what you might have figured. Ads that include 4 or more individually priced items over $150 or more than 6 priced items total will have to run and be paid for at least twice to give our readers enough time to respond unless it is an estate-type sale being conducted on a one-time basis.

Ads received past deadline, incomplete, with miscalculated costs or unintelligible may not run in that issue and it will be the reader’s responsibility to correct them for the following issue. If the ads are not corrected by the following issue, they will be discarded and payment voided at our office. If your ad does not run, email us for the reason and we will let you know.

We appreciate your business but please understand that publications like ours don’t have the staff to wait on call-in business on a real time basis. Look at the print landscape over the past ten years - you don’t have to go any further than The Sun Herald on the Mississippi Gulf Coast which today barely has 15% of its pre-Katrina Sunday circulation and has no local sales or editorial presence on the coast.

Thanks for reading our publications. We’ll continue to do our best and help you sell your items or secure clients for your business. -The Publisher
