Tony’s Take
WELL, WHADDA KNOW?! THEM DODGERS BECAME BUMS AGAIN!
Little in the sports world life makes me feel better from a negative standpoint as when any team from Los Angeles loses, especially to a San Francisco team. The Rams, a nomadic franchise best known for half-empty stadia in the country’s second-largest metropolis, got real lucky last year with an overachieving, undersized receiver and a generational defensive lineman and beat a plucky but overmatched Cincinnati Bengals team in a fairly entertaining Super Bowl, also played in the greater Los Angeles area (meaning within 100 miles of downtown).
This year, reality and the capricious nature of players like Odell (I Love Myself) Beckham, Junior, have kept the Rams away from the fortunes of 2021, when they survived a scare against the 49ers to meet the Bengals in the Super Bowl. Now, any team with former LSU Tigers Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase has to trump even an former Tiger Andrew Whitworth-led Ram team but I was happy for Whitworth to finally get a ring after a stellar season…but not for the Rams to win, their second Super Bowl ring in as many tries.
However, when it comes to sheer joy, it’s always a pleasure to see the Los Angeles Dodgers spend money like the Biden administration and come away with nothing. Superstars come and go in L.A, Rookies of the Year are more prevalent there than national championships at Alabama, but except for last year, the Bums usually are a reflection of their name once October comes and the Ooh La La! of the Los Angeles Basin becomes the Ooh La La Brea Tar Pits.
But nothing like this year. Replacing Cy Young winners with more Cy Young winners, buying franchise-defining athletes like Mookie Betts, Trae Turner and Freddie Freeman from their home-town squads, the 2022 Los Angeles Dodgers were this year’s Best Thang Ever. From April through September. And then they had to vanquish a team less than 80 miles down the road that they had swept this year and finished more than 20 games behind them. Starting in Los Angeles. Where they won the first game against the San Diego Padres. And then, not so much.
For a team that won 111 games in 2022, tying the 1954 Cleveland Indians for the best regular season record not held by the Seattle Mariners or Baltimore Orioles, the best ever in the Junior (National) League, the Dodgers showed why no one outside of Smogville really cares. Dodger ballplayers rarely have a national appeal. It’s sort of like they have a squad of Mike Trouts….a star who few would recognize on the street. And their vast talent has rarely been channeled into true greatness.
The best Dodger squads were led by meat and potatoes managers like Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda and players who were The Boys of Summer but just barely the Stars of the Hall Of Fame. Guys from post-World War II to the early and mid-80’s. And when LA became a Haves and Haves Not City, the team chose to become a Have Not franchise.
And in the 2022 Postseason, they have nada. The same thing that the Spanish-speaking residents of Chavez Ravine had after the early ’60’s when pre-woke Los Angeles created a land grab to build Dodger Stadium. Kind of chokes you up a bit. Why not? The Dodgers are baseball’s ultimate Choke Boys. The Dodger Blue is for their mood and also spelled “blew”, the way they usually respond to autumn baseball. Which leaves us with another sad wood stove season in balmy LA, where the few that care can watch either the Philadelphia Phillies or the San Diego Padres play for a World Series title. The rest can go to the beach, where Fall 2022 is a real beach for those true Dodger fans. (but it could be worse….ask a TennesseeVolunteer baseball fan about unbeatable teams in the postseason….and duck!).

LDWF Agents Investigating Fatal Boating Incident in Plaquemines Parish
601-528-0204.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents are investigating a fatal boating incident that occurred on Oct. 8 in Plaquemines Parish.
The body of Jose Granados, 49, of Baton Rouge, was recovered near Empire around 9:30 p.m. His body was turned over to the Plaquemines Parish Coroner’s Office to determine an official cause of death.
Agents were notified around 8:45 p.m. about a boating incident in the Empire Channel. Agents learned that an 18-foot vessel struck a rock jetty with three occupants on board. The three occupants were ejected from the vessel onto the rock jetty.
Granados did not survive the ejection from the vessel onto the rocks. The other two occupants were air lifted to University Hospital in New Orleans for severe injuries.
LDWF will be the lead investigative agency for this fatal boating incident.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents arrested a Violet man for alleged operating or driving a vessel while impaired (DWI) following a two-vessel boating incident in St. Bernard Parish on Oct. 4.
Agents arrested Kevin Diaz, 53, for DWI after he was involved in a two-vessel boating incident and booked him into the St. Bernard Parish Jail.
Agents received information regarding a vessel collision with no injuries in Bayou La Loutre at roughly 8 a.m. on Oct. 4. The operators were contacted and interviewed at the scene. During the course of the investigation, agents determined that Diaz was impaired.

Woundeed War Heroes
Every year for over 10 years I have sponsored and participated in this event. I actually gave up 2 trips in order for this to happen. These guys and gals are that special. We give these Wounded War Heroes a fully paid weekend here with ceremonies and trophies and other prizes.
While trying for our 4 red snapper we had to avoid the sharks. Sometimes we had to fight them all the way to the boat. I was using rod and reel setupsheavy enough that they could not break sobwe had to bring them to the boat. This was an unexpected treat for then. This shark was about 6 feet long.
After we limited out on red snapper we went looking for some more meat to take home. I went into an area where we would still get red snapper but they were all catch and release from here on. We found some nice mangrove snapper and bull croaker to add to our bounty
The next day a front came through so we could not run for snapper. We had to look for a place where there was protection from the winds. We also had to find clean water that was moving. There was a flip tide so our tide hight was only 0.6 feet with an hour of flat in the middle over a 13 hour span. Our first fish of the day was this beautifull bull red. He really enjoyed the battle this stud d gave him.
5th grade Social Studies students made Chinampas, “floating gardens”, like the Ancient Aztecs did to give them more farming and living space. Students represented the Leadership Habits of Beginning with the End in Mind and Synergizing by working in teams to plan out their design, build, and then test out their Chinampas.
For a while it seemed like the fish were being attracted to this person. It did not matter as long as we were bring them to the boat.
In the state of Louisiana, learning about the impact of water on land is critical. Ms. McBride’s 4th grade students proved up to the challenge as they built structures inside their stream tables in an attempt to reduce erosion.

It’s that time of year! Halloween is just around the corner! I love Halloween and I have been painting some quick and fun things the whole family can get it on. It can not be simpler than using five or six different colors of paint. I know some of you will make a face when I say I love candy corn. It just brings back memories of my childhood “adventures” on Halloween. You can cut these shades out of wood or paint them on stretched canvas, canvas paper, or just about anything. All age groups can get involved in this project. Don’t want the little ones using paint, no problem, give them some crayons and let them color away. Then you can hang them so your little one can see their art project displayed for the whole family to enjoy!
I painted mine on a 1/8 inch piece of wood. You can use baltic birch or anything you choose. The paints I used were, Of course, Deco Art Americana Acrylic. The colors were Snow White (Honey Brown for shading), Spiced Pumpkin, Burnt Orange (for shading), and Cadmium Yellow (Spiced Pumpkin for shading). I first base coated the entire candy corn Snow White, sectioned it off and painted the orange and yellow sections. I used a couple of stencils I had for the diamond background in the center section and free handed the stripes for the bottom section. Fast, simple, and so much fun to do. Now I am going to paint a quarter moon with a frog sitting in it. I hope you have lots of fun creating with your children and grandchildren for holidays!
By the way, if you are in the Gretna area, come by St. Mark’s church on Manhattan Sat. 10/22/2022 from 10 to 6 for their Fall Fest. I will be there with some of my painted projects. Hope to see you there!

We were getting a good mix of fish as you can see by this beautiful trout.
The winds were blowing a lot making for some difficult casting and limited areas to fish. My power poles were gliding through the mud with the wind pushing the boat in some areas. Only way to tell is by the wrinkles in his shirt. This was his first fish of the day. I felt sorry for him. He was a good fisherman but was just not getting the bites.
He had been watching these guys trying to school him on fishing. This was a nice double. The little one just made 16 inches so it also got a free ice bath on me.
We had a good flounder come in the boat. The picture and the wayvhe is holding it does not do it justice. This flounder took second place in the flounder division for the weekend.
It was a slow day as expected but I was able to scratch out a few nice fish once again.
Overall the weekend was another great success. These veterans had a well deserved weekend on us. God bless them all and keep them safe.

ALL ORNAMENTAL PEPPERS ARE LOUISIANA SUPER PLANTS THIS FALL.
Ornamental pepper plants have been increasing in popularity over the last several years. This makes a lot of sense in South Louisiana where “the pepper” has been infused with local culture for hundreds of years. The red, orange, yellow, and green colors of ripe pepper fruits also fit in well with harvest season décor and fall color schemes. Due to this popularity and their easy to grow nature, the LSU AgCenter has named all ornamental peppers varieties as Louisiana Super Plants for 2022. Home improvement stores, plant nurseries, and garden centers have picked up on this recent trend and now market ornamental peppers with other fall related plant material like crotons, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers.
Will Afton
Researchers currently agree that the pepper plant originated from Mexico and other areas in Western Central America. This offers a little explanation on why they are seen almost everywhere around South Louisiana. They can definitely take the heat! A lot of folks are having success with planting ornamental pepper plants in the later summer months where the plants easily establish themselves in the hot growing conditions and then as the days start to shorten and daily temperatures slowly reduce, they start flowering. They will put on a show during the months of October, November, and into December during mild winters.
Most people think of peppers when growing a vegetable garden but that is not the case anymore. Peppers are now being grown for their fruit color, fruit size, and foliage color. Potted ornamental pepper plants can be used alongside bales of hay, gourds, pumpkins, and corn stalks to make a nice fall display on the front porch. Ornamental peppers can be used to create interest in a mixed container planting. There compact growth size can be used as a filler plant or some of more interesting-colored peppers can be used as a thriller plant to draw attention to the container. Don’t forget that these pepper plants can be used in a flower bed situation. Create a design using ornamental peppers along with seasonal bedding plants in your landscape beds this fall.
Ornamental peppers will thrive in areas that are well-drained and receive full sunlight. Due to their current popularity, you’ll find many different varieties while shopping garden centers this season. ‘Purple Flash’ produces gorgeous, variegated foliage in shades of purple. ‘Midnight Fire’ produces deep purple-black foliage which contrast with dark red fruits. ‘Black Hawk Hybrid’ produces green leaves and bright red fruits that start out black. The ‘Chilly Chilli’ pepper produces 2–4-inch fruit in shades of yellow, green, orange and red. Add a whimsical look your patio using ‘Hot Pops Purple’ peppers. They produce small, round purple and orange peppers that look like they came out of Dr. Seuss story! So much variety that there is literally something for everyone.
Think about using ornamental pepper plants in your landscape this season. They’re an easy to grow plant with lots of newly released varieties on the market. We’ve listed some of the standouts above but make sure to check out what your local garden center has to offer. You won’t be disappointed.

Debunking the Myths of Black Cats
Myths can spin a tale of superstition passed down through generations and black cats have fallen victim to these stories since the beginning of the Middle Ages. Typically feared, black cats have been associated with dark arts such as witchcraft, witches, and even Satan. So it is no wonder that black cats have the lowest adoption rates and highest euthanasia rates in animal shelters across the country. We hope to debunk these myths so that black cats can find their fur-ever homes just like the rest of their feline friends.
Black cats have been given a bad rap for centuries as they are associated with bad luck and anything eerie. Their likeness is used as decoration for Halloween and often portrayed in movies as evil or foreshadowing for a scary scene. This stereotype is why it is so difficult for animal shelters to adopt out their sweet, black cats. In fact, most shelters simply do not adopt them out during Halloween season in fear that they may be used for sacrificial reasons. To think that there are so many deserving black cats that need a home but are passed up because of superstition is quite unfathomable. Yet unfortunately this is the reality for black cats in most parts of the world. We do hold out a bit of hope though in certain cultures for the positive stereotype has been projected of the black cat.
In some cultures, black cats are considered to be a sign of luck, prosperity, and even financial success. In Scotland, a black cat that comes to your doorstep is a sign of prosperity to come while in Ireland and England a black cat crossing your path brings good luck. British sailors would even bring black cats aboard their ships as it would mean a safe return home. In Japan, single women would own black cats in hopes that they would improve the woman’s love life and send her a suitor. So why did the negative stereotype end up sticking? Unfortunately, it seems that even with all the good that black cats can bring, people still wanted to focus on the bad.
Animal shelter photographers attempt to capture the good in black cats when they photograph them, but it can be difficult with such a dark coat. Adopters tend to see the pictures online and pass up on the black cats simply because they do not always photograph as well as their lightercoated feline companions. That is why we encourage adopters to meet all the adoptable cats in person. The pur-fect match for you could be one of our sweet black cats that you never would have suspected until they were curled up in your lap purring softly. It is crucial to every adoption that you keep an open mind as you meet each cat because each one has a unique personality that you may find fits better with your lifestyle than others. No need to let superstitions get in the way of a life long furry best friend

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Pets should never be abandoned. Graycie and Oscar represent hundreds more pets abandoned by people who got them and decided they did not want them. Graycie and Oscar were left in the parking lot of a business where many cars came and went and people said it was such a shame, but did not stop to help them. Fortunately one person did stop and rescue them. If they had been left out there, they may have been killed by a car or a predator. Too little to hunt for food, they would have become malnourished and sick. If they had survived, they would have produced more homeless pets trying to fend for themselves in a hostile environment. Pets should never be abandoned. There are shelters and rescue organizations that will take them and get them the care they need, including spay/neuter, to stop the cycle of suffering these pets endure. You can help by fostering or adopting a rescued pet, or by volunteering with an animal rescue organization. Contact START to see how you can help.
