The long-awaited Kamala Harris seclusion from media ended last week when she and Vice-Presidentail candidate Tim Walz appeared on CNN with CNN reporter Dana Bash. The live broadcast moved quickly with Harris displaying her prosecutorial side with a strong accent of down-homeyness as Bash conducted a tightly structured interview, not allowing digression from either candidate as she fired relatively tough questions to both Harris and Walz. In all, CNN and its round table of six staffers did an admirable post-interview job of letting the debutante walk the walk and then offering a fair critique of not only her performance but the paths that she or Trump could follow in securing the votes in some swing states.
The race now enters the starting gate with the first furlong next week when Harris and Trump debate on the 10th, toe to toe, no notes, no live mikes when the other speaks and other attempts to maintain civility. It certainly will not be a Joe Biden meltdown when these two meet to coerce voters to support them in just two months. But it shouldn’t be another schtick from the former President either.
Love affairs can be heavenly or heartbreaking. The one that Donald Trump has with himself has to end. Trump is captivating when preaching to his base. But the base for him or for Kamala Harris is secure; no one from one side would even consider voting for the other side.
Trump sees too many things in either black or white. His reticence seems contrived and fleeting but misguided and poorly spoken too often. There doesn’t appear to be anyone who has any meaningful counsel with the former President when it comes to deportment and language. Being raised in the rough and tumble world of New York real estate took more than being able to bow your neck and take a beating; it took finesse from time to time. Trump valued finesse as part of the process of getting what he wanted so its not a new concept for him. The Trump Way may not be the way back to the White House unless finesse re-enters the picture. Smart politicians and really good leaders understand that. Trump apparently doesn’t. Kind of reminds me of Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman.” To paraphrase “if (he) is bad, he can’t see it, (he) can do no wrong, and turn his back on his best friend if he puts (him) down.”
For Trump to win in November would mean the self love affair needs to embrace those concerned about his behavior and needing assurances that he has changed significantly from the man who wrote “The Art of the Deal.” This is Trump’s biggest Deal and the man who has eschewed gambling all of his life needs to reach into his pile of chips and find the blue chips of decorum, respect and understanding if he wants 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to be his four-year home in 2025.

The weather we’ve been receiving this year has been horrible. In fact, when you review the recent weather patterns over the last three years, you’ll realize that we’ve had multiple years of extreme weather stacked on top of each other. 2021 brought us Hurricane Ida at the end of August. 2022 started out extremely dry, then went extremely wet for two months, and reciprocated and went dry for the rest of the year. So far in 2023, we can’t catch a rain event to save our lives!
Extreme weather affects all living organisms. Water is essential for biological life and for plants, water is life. Transpiration, water movement in plants, is an integral process that supplies the water for photosynthesis. Water stress affects all plants but larger plants like our native and landscape trees take the biggest hit. Long term environmental stresses like extended drought-like conditions stacked on top of other stresses can lead to plant failure. One issue I am concerned with is termite infestations on weakened trees.
Termites are known for their ability to break down wood because they are some of the only organisms known to digest cellulose, the main constituent of plant cell walls. They are social insects that live in colonies of hundreds to thousands. Within a colony there are different types of termites with specialized functions like workers, soldiers, and reproductive forms. The reproductive forms often produce wings and can start a new colony where a suitable host has been located. Drought-stressed, storm-damaged trees could make for excellent hosts for young termite colonies.
Believe it or not, Louisiana is home to several different species of termites. Drywood termites, like their name suggests, build their nests in dry wood such as lumber, telephone poles, and dead branches of trees. Subterranean termites build their nests in the soil and feed on wood that comes in contact with the ground. A lot of folks forget that the heartwood, the middle area of the tree trunk or branch is composed of non-living cells. Either of these types can feed on native and landscape trees if they find exposed heartwood. Both drywood and subterranean termites are native and play a role in the overall nutrient recycling paradigm. Formosan subterranean termites, natives of East Asia, are the most destructive because they are much more aggressive in feeding on live trees.
To diagnose a termite infestation in a tree there are three areas to inspect. When approaching a possible host, inspect the trunk area directly above the ground up to eye level. Look for shelter tubes or mud tubes, cracks in the bark or exposed heartwood filled with feces, saliva, and dirt. In simple terms, they resemble cracks filled with mud. Next, focus your attention to the crown area, or area where tree trunk goes into ground. Use a probe and dig around to look for actual termite insects. After making 360 degrees around the tree, look for any old pruning wounds. Examine old pruning wounds for signs of shelter tubes and swarm castles. Swarm castles would be seen more so in springtime after Mother’s Day, when termites start swarming in Southeast Louisiana.
Trees with active termite infestations should be evaluated for risk. The closer to a structure, the higher the risk. The fact that a termite infestation can go unnoticed until tree failure, scouting and early detection is a key to management. Practices that reduce environmental stress and promote plant vigor can help prevent infestations. Maintaining a mulched area under landscape trees is the number one thing a tree owner can do to help maintain vigor. Supplemental irrigation and proper fertilization can help as well.
If an active infestation is found on a high-risk tree consult a certified arborist. For legacy trees and irreplaceable trees, you may want to search out an ISA certified arborist (treesaregood.org). Commercial pesticide applicators have access to products that contain fipronil as the active ingredient that can be applied around the base of an infected tree. Bifenthrin (Talstar, Hi-Yield Big Blaster) is an option for homeowners. Scouting is the key to termite management and if you see suspicious activity, feel free to call your local parish extension office to discuss with an agent.

Hope you had a great two weeks. My granddaughter got to come home from college last weekend. I got to see her for a while. She had so many people who called wanting to get together and spend some time with her. I totally understood that. Of course she didn’t go back to school empty handed.
By Paula Johnson
She needed something Fallish to decorate her dorm. So when she saw what I had been working on she decided she had to have it. And of course I could not say no. This was really a fun piece to paint. I painted this on a piece of 6 x 6 MDF. I base coated the background light buttermilk, traced on the outline of the pumpkins, which were painted green, are light beige, and spiced pumpkin. I added the cat and painted him black. Shaded the pumpkins in the appropriate coordinating colors. Added some line work on the pumpkins itself. Added the lettering with black, highlighted them with white. Shaded around the edges of the pieces and when it was dried did more line work. This was a very simple piece to do. I am so glad I got to this for her because, On the down side, my physical therapy has been postponed due to the incision not healing properly. So it’s back to limiting the use of that foot/leg. Back to elevating it, putting ice packs on it, oh yea and more medication. Good thing I was able to get a couple things done.
Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....We shall see. I know it will be fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Tony’s Take
WHAT HAPPENS (TO THE TIGERS) IN VEGAS BETTER LEAVE WITH THEM
The LSU Tigers went to Bling Town last weekend to play the Southern Cal Trojans. They were a slight favorite to win the second of three games against the former West Coast powerhouse because of their superior offensive line and better defense. But Vegas is an unforgiving burg and the Tigers needed to have their blue chip stash ready to go against a team beaten by Tulane in Dallas less than two years ago whose Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Caleb Williams, couldn’t find enough time or offense to stop the Green Wave then.
Between NIL-drriven commercials featuring current collegiate football standouts, the Tigers better have the stuff needed to stop a Lincoln Riley offense that hasn’t equaled the offensive prowess of his former team, the Oklahoma Sooners. Rest assured neither team has the offensive 5-star power of their glorious past, so this will not be an “over” game for bettors, even with two defenses that stunk in 2023 and have questions to begin the 2024 season.
You’ll definitely need a roster to keep up in this game. Outside of their offensive tackles, LSU offers little that will remind you of their 2019 and 2023 offensive machines. This team offers the best set of tackles in the nation with Will Campbell and Emory Jones, both projected as top 20 pro picks with Campbell being the bell cow of all tackles nationwide along with Kelvin Banks of Texas.
If LSU wins, it will because of their more seasoned receivers and better starting tight end with a moretalented set of tight end backups than USC. Both starting quarterbacks are new but LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier has a signature win against Wisconsin in last year’s Reliaquest Bowl in Tampa while USC quarterback Miller Moss torched Louisville in last year’s Holiday Bowl by throwing for nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns. Call this one a draw.
LSU’s wideouts have proven to play and produce greater than expectations in the last 20 years. At least eight former receivers have gone from the doghouse or the basement to the penthouse, whether it was Malik Nabers’ reinvention following two disastrous punt returns in 2022 to the lightlyregarded D.J. Chark. The same could be said for the three starting LSU receivers against USC.
One can only hope that following the dramatic appearance of Charger and his sword-wielding rider before the kickoff that the Tigers found the strength of the Spartans along with the claws of the Tiger to give LSU its first opening day win of the season since 2019.
Defensively? Cross your fingers that they finally have Harold Perkins back where he belongs and the secondary shows some of the flair and strength that made LSU “DBU” not so long ago with as many NFL defensive backs as Ohio State and Alabama. Show some of the moxie Notre Dame did early against Texas A&M last Saturday night in College Station against a ferocious home crowd (better than recent LSU supporters in Tiger Stadium) and take the chances that will help elevate your game to produce a winner against USC. Take those chips and make Leaving Las Vegas a confidence building, swag producing experience.

SUN-SMART GARDENING
With the hot, humid temperatures of the South, preventing sun damage and heat-related illness is a top priority. Today I am going to mention ways you can be sun-smart while gardening.
Plan outdoor activities prior to 10 AM or after 4 PM. Severe illnesses can occur when the heat index is 100 °F or more, which takes place when the temperature is above 90°F and the humidity is above 60 percent. Stay up to date with information related to temperature, humidity, and UV exposure. Break large projects into smaller, more manageable ones. Doing this allows you to set con-sistent break goals and avoid over-exertion. Having a buddy system with another gar-dener also helps ensure safety.
When gardening, make sure you are dressed appropriately. Wear a light weight, long sleeve shirt and a wide brimmed hat to minimize sunburn. You can also purchase sunglasses that provide 100 percent protection from UV rays.
Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. It is im-portant to follow manufacturer guidelines on how often the sunscreen should be reap-plied. Some products require reapplication in as little as every 30 minutes. Sunscreen is only effective for 1 to 2 years. Make sure to write the purchase date on the sun-screen and purchase new sunscreen every year.
Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and avoiding the intake of alcohol or sugary drinks. A rule of thumb is to drink at least 8 ounces of water for every 15 minutes of heat exposure. Don’t forget to drink sports drinks or other sources of elec-trolytes to replace what is lost through sweating.
Some signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headaches, and muscle cramps. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is best to take a break and cool off. Avoiding the use of appliances that give off heat is another way to reduce heat exposure.
The ill effects of the sun are almost completely preventable. Sun exposure happens every day, so think about protection from UV every day. While taking pre-cautions may feel unnecessary at the time, the effort is worth it in the long run. For more information on how to be sun-smart while gardening, see Extension Publication P3840, Sun Sense.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Mr Temple, a World War II veteran, adopted Shatzi from an animal shelter. The two were inseparable until Mr Temple passed away at the age of 98.
Shatzi was 14 and homeless, but he was such a happy, sociable little guy we knew there was another home in his future. A foster home was found and before long a wonderful family adopted him. Shatzi thrived for two years surrounded by love in his new home. He passed away in August, but we will always remember him.
Our volunteers are so grateful to those who have a heart for senior pets. When their owners pass away, these pets are often passed over for adoption, and some are euthanized by their deceased owners heirs. Yet they have so much to offer, and they can definitely bond with a new family. Shatzi brought us and his adoptive family so much joy and love. Please consider adopting a senior dog or cat if you are looking for a wonderful pet companion.
AMERICAN BEAUTYBERRY
I have noticed that more gardeners than ever are interested in having native plants in their landscapes.
This trend just makes sense. Native plants occur naturally in a region without being introduced by humans. They are adapted to their region and do not require a lot of maintenance or upkeep.
One native plant you might like to include in your landscape is the American beautyberry.
The deciduous, native American beautyberry shrub, known scientifically as Callicarpa americana, is the variety most gardeners know about. Callicarpa comes from two Greek words meaning beautiful and fruit, giving us the common name “beautyberry.”
This plant makes quite a statement in the landscape with its gorgeous display of bright purple fruits in the fall.
Beautyberries grow well in partial shade to full sun. They typically grow up to 4 feet tall and wide and have a loose, open habit. Under favorable growing conditions, I have seen beautyberries reach 8 to 10 feet tall.
You can find inconspicuous white or light pink flowers on new growth from June to July. The beautyberry produces these small clusters of flowers near the stems, and soon after, fruit clusters form.
As summer winds down, these small, green fruits turn a gorgeous purple that looks especially appealing against the backdrop of lovely green leaves. The beautiful, metallic purple fruits are bright and shiny, arranged in clusters at the leaf nodes, and held tightly along the arching branches.
Best fruit production comes from having multiple plants in full sun with consistent soil moisture. In late fall, the leaves fall off the plants, but the fruit remains and may last through early winter. Beautyberry fruit is a good food source for songbirds and small mammals.
If you’re looking for natural decorations in the fall, the long-lasting beautyberry branches can make colorful additions to flower arrangements.
In the landscape, beautyberry can be used as a backdrop for fall-blooming plants. It also makes a great addition to a wildlife or pollinator garden.
Late winter or early spring is a great time to prune beautyberry because flowers are produced on new growth. Pruning can maintain the height and shape of the shrub. Severe pruning of large, vigorously growing plants will result in rounded shrubs with many long shoots that flower heavily and produce an abundance of fruit clusters.
The only drawback to beautyberry is its relatively short lifespan, which can be as few as 10 years. However, it readily spreads by self-sown seeds, providing future generations of plants.
I have read that the crushed leaves of beautyberry produce a chemical that can repel mosquitos, ticks and fire ants. Be cautious about trying this because it might cause an allergic reaction on your skin. I love the American beautyberry in my landscape and recommend you plant one in yours, too.
LASPCA CLEAR THE SHELTER EVENT
The Louisiana SPCA is thrilled to announce our annual Clear the Shelter event is back!
Clear the Shelter is a national event, hosted by NBCUniversal and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, where shelters across the country will attempt to get every adoptable animal into a new home, and it couldn’t have come at a better time! This has been a busy time for both our New Orleans and Plaquemines’ shelters as we have taken in more than 360 animals this month alone, double the amount adopted.
Through September 10th, our adoption fees will be discounted so this is a great time to come find your new furry friend. Each adoptable animal will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. Each adoption will also include a free bag of pet food, and every dog adopted comes with a discount on GoodPup online training. Normal adoption procedures will apply during Clear the Shelters.
Our shelters are bursting at the seams, so come take advantage of this annual event by adopting a dog or cat today!
Adoptions are first come, first serve!
To view our adoptable animals, visit our website at www.louisianaspca.org/ adoptables.
DOLLAR SPOT
As we head into Fall, we will begin to see fungal issues in many lawns due to the cooler tempera-tures and heavier dew patterns. One that has been popping up lately, due to the ideal temperature and extended period of leaf wetness, is dollarspot.
While most common in Bermuda and zoysiagrass, this fungal problem can occur in most warm season turfs. Initial symptoms on leaves will be chlorotic spots that turn to straw-colored areas with a reddish margin. When looking at the lawn these infected areas will look like small, circular spots that are a light straw color. The disease can sometimes cause an hour-glass shaped chlorotic spot in middle of the leaf and can cause the area to appear “sunken” due to the leaf folding over at this chlorotic point. With the drought we’ve been experiencing this summer through now, this can be somewhat tough to identify as a lot of our turf is now brown due to drought stress.
Managing dollar spot can be done by maintaining soil moisture and soil nutrition. Watering to maintain soil moisture should be done in a way that does not prolong wet periods, such as early morning or late afternoon. Maintaining adequate soil nutrition is particularly important, particularly nitrogen lev-els, so that the grass can outgrow the fungus. Taking a soil test and following instructions are important because overapplication of nutrients can lead to other issues. Making sure you avoid thatch buildup and removing clippings regularly will also help with this disease.
Fungicides can help manage this disease, but this can be difficult due to various resistances that the fungus may have. Make sure to rotate between fungicides if you decide to use them to avoid these problems. Fungicides that have been shown to help include fluxapyroxad (Xzemplar or similar).
Make sure you read and follow all instructions to avoid plant damage. Myclobutanil or Propiconazole, for ex-ample, should not be applied when temperatures are over 85 de-grees due to potential for suppressed growth and burning. Appli-cations are most beneficial when applied every 14-28 days pre-ventatively. Trying to eliminate an established problem will take higher application rates more often and may not work.
More information on dollar spot fungus can be found on Publication 3750 or Publication 1322 at extension.msstate.edu.
