TERMITES IN TREES
The weather we’ve been receiving this year has been horrible. In fact, when you review the recent weather patterns over the last three years, you’ll realize that we’ve had multiple years of extreme weather stacked on top of each other. 2021 brought us Hurricane Ida at the end of August. 2022 started out extremely dry, then went extremely wet for two months, and reciprocated and went dry for the rest of the year. So far in 2023, we can’t catch a rain event to save our lives!
Extreme weather affects all living organisms. Water is essential for biological life and for plants, water is life. Transpiration, water movement in plants, is an integral process that supplies the water for photosynthesis. Water stress affects all plants but larger plants like our native and landscape trees take the biggest hit. Long term environmental stresses like extended drought-like conditions stacked on top of other stresses can lead to plant failure. One issue I am concerned with is termite infestations on weakened trees.
Termites are known for their ability to break down wood because they are some of the only organisms known to digest cellulose, the main constituent of plant cell walls. They are social insects that live in colonies of hundreds to thousands. Within a colony there are different types of termites with specialized functions like workers, soldiers, and reproductive forms. The reproductive forms often produce wings and can start a new colony where a suitable host has been located. Drought-stressed, storm-damaged trees could make for excellent hosts for young termite colonies.
Believe it or not, Louisiana is home to several different species of termites. Drywood termites, like their name suggests, build their nests in dry wood such as lumber, telephone poles, and dead branches of trees. Subterranean termites build their nests in the soil and feed on wood that comes in contact with the ground. A lot of folks forget that the heartwood, the middle area of the tree trunk or branch is composed of non-living cells. Either of these types can feed on native and landscape trees if they find exposed heartwood. Both drywood and subterranean termites are native and play a role in the overall nutrient recycling paradigm. Formosan subterranean termites, natives of East Asia, are the most destructive because they are much more aggressive in feeding on live trees.
To diagnose a termite infestation in a tree there are three areas to inspect. When approaching a possible host, inspect the trunk area directly above the ground up to eye level. Look for shelter tubes or mud tubes, cracks in the bark or exposed heartwood filled with feces, saliva, and dirt. In simple terms, they resemble cracks filled with mud. Next, focus your attention to the crown area, or area where tree trunk goes into ground. Use a probe and dig around to look for actual termite insects. After making 360 degrees around the tree, look for any old pruning wounds. Examine old pruning wounds for signs of shelter tubes and swarm castles. Swarm castles would be seen more so in springtime after Mother’s Day, when termites start swarming in Southeast Louisiana.
Trees with active termite infestations should be evaluated for risk. The closer to a structure, the higher the risk. The fact that a termite infestation can go unnoticed until tree failure, scouting and early detection is a key to management. Practices that reduce environmental stress and promote plant vigor can help prevent infestations. Maintaining a mulched area under landscape trees is the number one thing a tree owner can do to help maintain vigor. Supplemental irrigation and proper fertilization can help as well.
If an active infestation is found on a high-risk tree consult a certified arborist. For legacy trees and irreplaceable trees, you may want to search out an ISA certified arborist (treesaregood.org). Commercial pesticide applicators have access to products that contain fipronil as the active ingredient that can be applied around the base of an infected tree. Bifenthrin (Talstar, Hi-Yield Big Blaster) is an option for homeowners. Scouting is the key to termite management and if you see suspicious activity, feel free to call your local parish extension office to discuss with an agent.

Well, a few weeks into the college football season and we have found out a few things. FSU is the best team in the ACC, the SEC is wide open until Georgia has a statement win against a real opponent. Especially since Tennessee fell flat against Florida and Alabama got blasted by Texas and then benched their quarterback only to score a dismal 17 points against that football power that is South Florida. Then we have our LSU Tigers, who just like last year seem to make the right adjustments in week 2 and enter conference play with a question mark only to have a really good game. Unfortunately for StarkVegas fans, until next year when we do not play, it always happens at the hands of the Bulldogs.
A lopsided loss to start the season had No. 14 LSU looking to re-establish itself as a championship contender out of the Southeastern Conference against Mississippi State. The Bayou Bengals looked every bit of that in front of over 61,000 illegal cow-bell ringing fans. Malik Nabers set career highs with 13 catches for 239 yards and scored two touchdowns, Jayden Daniels ran for two scores and set a school record for passing accuracy, and No. 14 LSU beat Mississippi State 41-14.
The Tigers (2-1) outgained the Bulldogs 310-79 in the first half on the way to a 24-7 lead.
“Daniels and Nabers hooking up to the level that we’ve always wanted to see, we saw that (Saturday) and that’s certainly fun,” head coach Brian Kelly said. “If that continues to show itself, we’re a pretty good football team. Defensively, there were many questions. It’s just a matter of getting a lot of young players and new players together. It’s just a matter of time.”
Will Rogers had his worst game as a starting quarterback at Mississippi State (2-1) as the senior was 11 of 28 for 103 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. It was the fewest completions and yardage Rogers has had as a starter.
“(It was) not very good, obviously,” Rogers said of the game. “It’s kind of back to the drawing board for us. We’ve got to stick together and get better. We can’t dwell on this too long, we’ve got a big game next week on the road.”
The Bulldogs, who are transitioning away from late coach Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense in Year 1 under coach Zach Arnett, managed just 201 yards.
“It was as bad a defeat as you can have,” Arnett said. “Credit to Coach Kelly, his staff, their players. They came out better prepared. They played faster from the jump. And they dominated the football game. I’ve done a poor job in the evaluation of our football team. We have to decide how we want to respond to this.”
Daniels threw for 361 yards on 30 of 34 passing, the best completion percentage (88.2%) ever for an LSU quarterback in a game with at least 25 attempts. He also rushed 15 times for 64 yards before he came out midway through the fourth quarter with the lead at 41-7.
‘There won’t be a better performance in the country and if there is, that would be amazing,” Kelly said. “He really worked hard the past week getting on top of his throws. It was great to see that come to fruition.”
The biggest change came on the defensive side. LSU had recorded one sack through two games. Despite its talent, the defensive front had not affected a quarterback. Florida State’s Jordan Travis evaded pressure, and Grambling quickly got the ball out, not giving LSU enough time to reach athletic quarterback Myles Crawley.
That changed against Mississippi State.
“If you’re a pocket quarterback, we’re going to get to you,” Kelly said. “And if you are a play-action team that doesn’t get the ball out in 2 seconds, we’re going to get some pressure. We’ve got some pretty good guys up front.”
The Bulldogs tried to throw more than they had the first two games, but Rogers had almost no time. LSU played with four down linemen more often. As the defensive front created havoc, Rogers completed 39% of his passes (11 of 28) for 103 yards. The Bulldogs had 7 total yards on their first five possessions. Marks was held to 75 yards rushing, 52 of which came on one first-half run.
Pressure came from everywhere. Sai’vion Jones had a hurry and a sack. Smith forced an incompletion. Freshman linebacker Whit Weeks, who started with Speights out, flattened Rogers on an untouched blitz. Mekhi Wingo’s sack ended a drive. Harold Perkins recorded his first sack of the year. So did safety Major Burns, and Bradyn Swinson added a hurry.
Kelly and the players had maintained internal belief over the last two weeks. The Florida State game spiraled when LSU played without energy. Grambling had success in part because LSU played dime personnel early on.
In Kelly’s mind, younger players needed to develop as LSU worked on run fits and tackling. The issues were there, but they could be addressed in a long season.
Neither of the last two wins came against the most difficult opponents on LSU’s schedule. There are tougher tests ahead with four straight SEC games, two of them on the road. But in beating Mississippi continued

As promised I can now tell you about the flowers I made for a special wedding. I normally do not work with silk flowers but I made an exception. I knew getting the right colors she wanted was going to be a challenge. I was not disappointed. But with determination and a lot of prayers, we found what was needed, after two and a half months of looking! There are more variants of the color yellow than I could have imagined. Making sure they all come from the same dye lot is the key.. The navy blue was a bit easier.
Once I had everything needed it was a done deal! Although it did take time to make all those bouquets. The one I am showing you today is one of the corsages for the grandmothers and great aunt. I really like the sheer navy blue ribbon. It really brought out the yellow roses.
Well that’s it for time. What will your next project be? Mine......I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun!
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO PLANT A FALL GARDEN
Fall gardening is a great way to extend your growing season and enjoy fresh produce well into the cooler months.
With a little planning and preparation, you can have a thriving garden even as the leaves begin to change colors. One of the first things to consider when fall gardening is the type of plants you want to grow. Some great options for fall include kale, lettuce, spinach, and broccoli. These vegetables thrive in cooler temperatures and can even withstand a light frost.
Another important aspect of fall gardening is soil preparation. You’ll want to make sure your soil is healthy and nutrient-rich to give your plants the best possible chance of success. Consider adding compost or other organic matter to your soil to help improve its quality.
When it comes to planting, timing is crucial. You’ll want to make sure you plant your seeds early enough in the fall that they have time to mature before the first frost. Depending on your climate and what you are growing, you can still plant as late as September.
Finally, be prepared to protect your plants from the elements. As temperatures drop, you may need to cover your plants with blankets or other protective coverings to keep them warm. Additionally, be sure to water your plants regularly, as they may need more water than they did during the summer months.
Overall, fall gardening can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. With a little planning and preparation you can enjoy fresh produce well into the fall and even winter months! So grab your gardening gloves and get ready to make the most of the cooler weather!
