This LSU team is the type of squad former Southern Cal head honcho Pete Carroll would love to coach; loaded with talented freshmen eager to push out upperclassmen, experience be damned. Well, the “experienced be damned” part Coach Brian Kelly certainly has nailed down.
It all starts up front and the school’s most experienced unit, among the two or three preseason Joe Moore nominees for college football’s best offensive line…..but don’t waste your time. Led by the inability of LSU’s supposedly strongest tackle duo in the country, LSU has shown a maddeningly, Les Miles style of play that either cripples their efforts to maintain a balanced offense with sloppy pulling or trap plays and a lack of speed to set the corner for outside running calls.
All five starters are equally to blame; both Will Campbell and Emory Jones Junior have performed as if it doesn’t really matter if they slip into the second round….or later…in next year’s NFL draft. In the first two uneven games this fall, pass protected was good to very good against Southern Cal and Nichols State but in Columbia last Saturday, South Carolina’s defensive line looked like a very good impersonation of the type of defensive fronts offered as a matter of course at Alabama and ate LSU’s lunch for two quarters, running and passing. Simply put, this line right now is writing checks that their collective butts can’t cover.
Watching 2024’s group of NIL-infused portal players that LSU has settled for the past two years gives Tiger fans pause to think they’ll be invited to the 12-team college playoff dance. Either because of injuries or a case of settling for “it is what it is,” this Tiger roster is one of the hardest to identify on the field. What has recently been LSU being known as DBU, (along with Ohio State and Alabama) with college football elite secondary performers now has LSU labeled as Drubbing U, where opposing receivers are allowed to run free like they’re gazelles in a wild game preserve.

Why even ignore the really sore point of the past 15 games? When you have a talent like Harold Perkins, with the rare ability to influence an opposing team’s offense (a la Tyrann Mathieu), you don’t domesticate him in order to fit a pre-NFL mold that could change by the end of his third (and definitely final LSU year) following the 2025 season. Add LSU’s handling of Perkins to their Injuries, underperforming transfers, undercoached players, lack of an ability to intimidate…..Right now, this team, especially on defense, is simply too weak to be able to dance with the Ole Misses and ‘Bamas of the SEC, not to mention Texas A&M, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma……even Kentucky.
Most of the passing grades (and any of the A’S or B’S) on this team belong to the offense. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is easily the leader after the first furlong with only an ill-advised Quasamotro-style pass against the Gamecocks being a blemish on his nearly flawless performance as a progression pocket quarterback who does not panic and has the NFL tools to be playing on Sundays in 2025. Add Aaron Anderson and Karen Lacy and and perhaps Whit Weeks to that B average or above. But unless this squad can repurpose most of the fourth quarter from the Columbia game and reapply it from the get-go in upcoming games, this Tiger team will git-gone with a gallop out of any serious postseason consideration.

FALL LAWN CARE ADVICE
For some, the many steps involved with “lawn care” or “lawn maintenance” can be a monotonous chore, but to others, it can be a stress-relieving activity to take the mind off other thoughts. No matter what camp you associate with, the second half of lawn care season is here and some things need to be done.
The summer solstice, or what some refer to as the longest day of the year, is the day of the year when the sun sits at its highest point in the sky, resulting in the most daylight experienced in a day for that entire year.
Every day before the summer solstice increases in daylight length and every day afterward decreases in daylight. This is important to understand because this is one of the ways that plants tell time. There are other observations involved with this claim, but the total amount of daylight directly relates to photosynthetic activity. As days become shorter, warm-season turfgrasses lose vigor as rate of growth slows down. Eventually, when the days get short enough and daily temperatures cool down, the lawn will go dormant.
By the time September rolls around most of us are starting to notice that the lawn is not growing as fast as it did earlier in the summer months. Continue mowing to remove one-third of the grass plant each time you mow. Maintain a sharp blade so that you are cutting and not tearing grass blades. Follow the mowing height recommendations for the species of turfgrass you are growing. Proper mowing goes a long way in managing a consistent look throughout the entire lawn.
Most of us are familiar with fertilizing and September is the last month to apply plant-available nitrogen to the lawn. Local garden centers will start proclaiming that you must winterize your lawn as well. Winterize-type fertilizers contain added potassium, which is considered a macronutrient in plants. Plants with adequate amounts of potassium are much less stressed than those without. A soil test every 2-3 years will alert you to any nutrient deficiencies. Muriate of potash can be used to address major potassium deficiencies. Follow the rates and suggestions provided on the soil test analysis sheet. If using a winterizer fertilizer product always use the nitrogen concentration (first number in the three-number system) to determine the proper rate. The LSU AgCenter recommends 1lbs of actual nitrogen for every 1,000 ft2 of lawn. If using Fertilome Winterizer (10-0-14) that would be 10 lbs per 1,000 ft2. If you had a 5,000 ft2 yard, then you would need to apply 50 lbs to satisfy the rate.
Lastly, I would like to mention weed control. Notice how it is the last item I discuss in this article. That is because weekly pruning (mowing) and adequate nutrition (fertilizer) make our lawns much more competitive with weeds. A vigorous and competitive lawn provides the best results. However, sometimes weed pressure is high and herbicides can quickly change that. September is the time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide to the yard to prevent the germination of cool-season annual weeds such as annual bluegrass, chickweed, and hairy bittercress. A lot of folks use Dimension (dithiopyr) but there are other options like Pendulum 2G (pendimethalin) and Barricade (prodiamine). Remember to always follow label instructions before applying a pesticide product.

Hope you had a great two weeks. My granddaughter got to come home from college last weekend. I got to see her for a while. She had so many people who called wanting to get together and spend some time with her. I totally understood that. Of course she didn’t go back to school empty handed.
By Paula Johnson
She needed something Fallish to decorate her dorm. So when she saw what I had been working on she decided she had to have it. And of course I could not say no. This was really a fun piece to paint. I painted this on a piece of 6 x 6 MDF. I base coated the background light buttermilk, traced on the outline of the pumpkins, which were painted green, are light beige, and spiced pumpkin. I added the cat and painted him black. Shaded the pumpkins in the appropriate coordinating colors. Added some line work on the pumpkins itself. Added the lettering with black, highlighted them with white. Shaded around the edges of the pieces and when it was dried did more line work. This was a very simple piece to do. I am so glad I got to this for her because, On the down side, my physical therapy has been postponed due to the incision not healing properly. So it’s back to limiting the use of that foot/leg. Back to elevating it, putting ice packs on it, oh yea and more medication. Good thing I was able to get a couple things done.
Well, that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....We shall see. I know it will be fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, it has been two weeks so let us recap a bit. So turn the time machine back 14 days to September 1.
I had a totally different article planned for this issue. However, after the LSU loss to USC, I decided to scrap it and write this one instead.
Does it suck to lose the 1st game of the year for the 5th consecutive year, yes! Does it suck to lose the 3rd consecutive opener under Brian Kelly, YES! Does it suck that the loss came at the hands of the game dodger Lincoln Riley and the wanna be 2003 national champs, HECK YES! Is it the end of our season, Absolutely Not!
Even with a loss there are some bright spots. Our offense was humming along for almost the entire part of the game until when we got a 4 pt lead and decided to hit the cruise control button instead of the gas pedal. While the defense, played the bend but not break game until at the very end of the game when it actually broke.
This offensive team is still very talented and will put up some points throughout the year. Especially after this moment where we found out that we clearly must keep our foot on the gas and not let up. While the defense, still has a ways to go but we clearly saw some improvements.
It is unclear why the Weeks brothers were not in the game at the end. Perkins still needs to find a way to keep in the action for an entire 4 quarters. While, Sage Ryan needs to finally find the bench and never leave unless it is to catch the bus. With that said, this defense showed major improvements from last year and the young cornerbacks will actually have to see a ton more playing time.
I know it might sound like I am putting sunshine on a hurricane but this LSU team has a few weeks to improve which we know they will. The game against Nicholls will see some improvement but it will be against lower level competition. The game against South Carolina on the road will be the time where we will see what this team is made of. Then the following week against UCLA will hopefully see some continued improvement and should have the Tigers undefeated the rest of the month.

If things play out and the Tigers do what needs to get done and Ole Miss comes to Death Valley October 12th undefeated than all will be forgotten if the good guys win that one. If the Bayou Bengals struggle the next few weeks and limp into that game and then get blown out by the Rebels than we are talking about a different story and a different season.
The good news is that with this new playoff, than 1 loss does not make it impossible for you to not make it in. However, it does leave little room for error and will make that game against Mississippi that much more intriguing. The last 3 national titles that LSU has won, they only finished undefeated one time while the others had some road bumps.
This is just a road bump, where we will have to see does the car fall apart or does it keep moving forward and getting updates. As the legendary Rocky Balboa said,
“It ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits! “
This was definitely a hit that we didn’t want to take but it is done and now we have to move forward. Good teams learn from games like this and get better and better every week thereafter. Again, that is why they play the game and one only hopes that this LSU team will get some of the one on one breaks that they seemed to lose every time in Vegas. I would bet, pun intended, that at the end of the season we might look back at this game and say man, this team is better. If that happens, than the Tigers will still be fighting for a national championship with a reality that they could take the title. However, if I could tell the future, I would be a very successful betting man and not just writing about it.
Ok, since then we have had a tougher than expected game against Nicholls State thanks to the Tropical Storm called Guggenheim. Then we went down 17 points and fought back for a 3 pt victory against a very tough South Carolina team in their house. This could be the spot where we look and see that this team turned the corner a bit.
Flooring, Electrical, Plumbing. 25 years experienced crew. Call 228-332-7024
They could have packed it in and let this game get away. However, the came together, kept fighting and we showcased a running game that was led by True Freshman Caden Durham. Man, did Durham do everything he could to earn a ton more playing time. So much so, that he might have jumped to the Top spot and should definitely take touches away from Kaleb Jackson which is a good thing. A fresh Jackson just adds more punch when needed and or can help in other areas of the offensive system.
Either way, I see this tight game against the Gamecocks as a catalyst to a team that will come together and defeat both UCLA and South Alabama. Setting up a monster home game against Ole Miss in what should be an epic Saturday night atmosphere in Death Valley.
The craziest part about this article is that I have focused so much on the LSU Tigers that I have not had any opportunity to talk about the New Orleans Saints. So, I promise, if this team stays the course that I will definitely give more time to talk about this offensive juggernaut that we have in the Big Easy. It is great, yet confusing to say that after the ho hum teams we have seen the last few years. Klint Kubiak has continued at top of next page
definitely earned his salary and has this offense rolling on all cylinders. Don’t forget, you are invited to check out our sports only podcast. THE BEAUTY OF TREE FOLIAGE IN THE FALL
Every fall we see a mixture of red, purple, orange and yellow leaves. This is the result of chemical pro-cesses that takes place in the tree as the seasons change from summer to winter. During the spring and sum-mer, the leaves serve as food manufacturers necessary for the tree’s growth. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. Chlorophyll absorbs the energy from sunlight that is used in transforming carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch. This is the process we know as photosynthesis.
But in the fall, the leaves stop their food-making process and the leaves’ work ends. This is because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible. Often there is too much sugar in leaves to transfer back to the tree. In this situ-ation, the chemical combination of these sugars with other substances produces many color shades. Some mixtures of various amounts of chlo-rophyll and other pigments produce the brilliant red of the dogwood to the darker red-browns of oaks or the yellows and purples of sweetgum, while others give the sugar maple its brilliant orange.
While the leaf is changing, other important processes are taking place. At the point where the stem of a leaf is attached, a special layer of cells develops and gradually cuts tissues supporting the leaf. The leaf falls leaving a scar where it grew on the twig. Shedding leaves is another provision for winter. After broadleaf trees shed their leaves, branches can more easily support snow and ice accumulations which is particularly useful in areas more north.
Temperature, light, and water supply have an influ-ence on the degree and the duration of fall color. Low tem-peratures above freezing will favor the bright reds in ma-ples. However, early frost will weaken the brilliant red col-or. Rainy and/or overcast days tend to increase the intensity of fall colors. The best time to enjoy fall color would be on a clear, dry, and cool day. So, enjoy it while it lasts, even for such a short time.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Mr Temple, a World War II veteran, adopted Shatzi from an animal shelter. The two were inseparable until Mr Temple passed away at the age of 98.
Shatzi was 14 and homeless, but he was such a happy, sociable little guy we knew there was another home in his future. A foster home was found and before long a wonderful family adopted him. Shatzi thrived for two years surrounded by love in his new home. He passed away in August, but we will always remember him.
Our volunteers are so grateful to those who have a heart for senior pets. When their owners pass away, these pets are often passed over for adoption, and some are euthanized by their deceased owners heirs. Yet they have so much to offer, and they can definitely bond with a new family. Shatzi brought us and his adoptive family so much joy and love. Please consider adopting a senior dog or cat if you are looking for a wonderful pet companion.
FALL WEBWORMS
A common question I have been receiving recently is, “webworms are kill-ing my trees what can I do?” Fall webworms are seen all over South Mississippi this time of year. They will feed on many different trees but pecan and persimmon are their favorite. These caterpillars normally feed inside the web where they are pro-tected from birds and other predators during the day but at night they will venture outside the webs.
Some years populations can reach high num-bers and cause severe defoliation. In these cases the nut crop can be affected that year and the following year. Treating large trees can be difficult for people who do not have access to large air blast sprayers. Using an Air blast sprayer a commercial grower can easily control webworms. For many of us the trees are in a home lawn and we don’t have access to this type of equipment, in these cas-es the common thing to do is nothing. These mature trees, even if severely defo-liated, will be able to survive without any long term problems other than the re-duced nut crop for that year and the following year.
If a tree is small enough to be sprayed with a handheld sprayer you can use Spinosad, bifenthrin, permethrin, cyfluthrin, and zeta-cypermethrin, to con-trol the webworms. Make sure and spray the webs thoroughly to get good penetration. Another option is to use a long pole to tear apart the webs exposing the caterpillars to predators.

LASPCA CLEAR THE SHELTER EVENT
The Louisiana SPCA is thrilled to announce our annual Clear the Shelter event is back!
Clear the Shelter is a national event, hosted by NBCUniversal and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, where shelters across the country will attempt to get every adoptable animal into a new home, and it couldn’t have come at a better time! This has been a busy time for both our New Orleans and Plaquemines’ shelters as we have taken in more than 360 animals this month alone, double the amount adopted.
Through September 10th, our adoption fees will be discounted so this is a great time to come find your new furry friend. Each adoptable animal will be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. Each adoption will also include a free bag of pet food, and every dog adopted comes with a discount on GoodPup online training. Normal adoption procedures will apply during Clear the Shelters.
Our shelters are bursting at the seams, so come take advantage of this annual event by adopting a dog or cat today!
Adoptions are first come, first serve!
To view our adoptable animals, visit our website at www.louisianaspca.org/ adoptables.
SOD WEBWORMS
As we head into Fall, we will begin to see fungal issues in many lawns due to the cooler tempera-tures and heavier dew patterns. One that has been popping up lately, due to the ideal temperature and extended period of leaf wetness, is dollarspot.
While most common in Bermuda and zoysiagrass, this fungal problem can occur in most warm season turfs. Initial symptoms on leaves will be chlorotic spots that turn to straw-colored areas with a reddish margin. When looking at the lawn these infected areas will look like small, circular spots that are a light straw color. The disease can sometimes cause an hour-glass shaped chlorotic spot in middle of the leaf and can cause the area to appear “sunken” due to the leaf folding over at this chlorotic point. With the drought we’ve been experiencing this summer through now, this can be somewhat tough to identify as a lot of our turf is now brown due to drought stress.
Managing dollar spot can be done by maintaining soil moisture and soil nutrition. Watering to maintain soil moisture should be done in a way that does not prolong wet periods, such as early morning or late afternoon. Maintaining adequate soil nutrition is particularly important, particularly nitrogen lev-els, so that the grass can outgrow the fungus. Taking a soil test and following instructions are important because overapplication of nutrients can lead to other issues. Making sure you avoid thatch buildup and removing clippings regularly will also help with this disease.
Fungicides can help manage this disease, but this can be difficult due to various resistances that the fungus may have. Make sure to rotate between fungicides if you decide to use them to avoid these problems. Fungicides that have been shown to help include fluxapyroxad (Xzemplar or similar).
Make sure you read and follow all instructions to avoid plant damage. Myclobutanil or Propiconazole, for ex-ample, should not be applied when temperatures are over 85 de-grees due to potential for suppressed growth and burning. Appli-cations are most beneficial when applied every 14-28 days pre-ventatively. Trying to eliminate an established problem will take higher application rates more often and may not work.
More information on dollar spot fungus can be found on Publication 3750 or Publication 1322 at extension.msstate.edu.
