Mid-Summer. For most of the country, this is still fun and sun time. There’s still about six weeks of hothot and this year, rain-rain, but the kids will be in school by the time you read this. I’ve always felt it was borderline criminal to (A) have a freakin’ prom in March (B) play football in August (C) have classes before Labor Day.
Summer is a bitch here, lately with a capital B. We’re in the midst of another “higher than normal activity” hurricane season but fortunately without a hurricane on the horizon. We’re in another “high hope” Saints preseason, where sunburned scribes get to bake on a practice field, hoping to uncover a diamond in the rough to talk about. Fans are waiting to relieve themselves of harder to earn dollars to watch so-called exhibition games with little strategy and meaning, unless you’re a player trying to raise your income from a paltry $2 million to a survivable $8 to $25 million a season or about $50-100l00 per snap of the ball while you’re on the field.
But it is a time for the Olympics this year, a Parisian Parade of Performance where some of the greatest athletes of all time dueled for days for a chance of a once-in-a four-year blaze of glory and gold. It’s midseason for baseball, where the real champions begin to assert themselves into the early autumn. It’s the dream of the collegiate football arena, where even an out-of-control NIL cannot dim the hearts and wallets of the true fan, who will attend any game that now REALLY means something at the end of the season. It’s the end of a dwindling love bug season, where those pesky man-made freaks of nature seemed to have all but disappeared. It’s the season for dance recitals and signups….and of course, school. I remember when going back to school was fun with meeting new and old friends, getting a promotion to a new grade and achieving a better position on your athletic, social and academic team. Today’s electronic devices have all but destroyed that culture and the ability of people to meet and develop one-on-one. So school is a drag from Day One to Day None and its a subject that never comes up in my household any more, even with grandchildren.

The best part of this late summer is the beginning of the hard core political season, when conventions and candidates are completed. Expect more childish gibberish and posturing following the second convention in Chicago this month, where any semblance to the famous 1968 Chicago Convention will not exist. The battle lines are drawn and we can expect the last of the summer hot air to be suplimented by the unending blasts of roasting hot rhetoric until mid-Autumn. It might heat up a chilly late October morning but it won’t do any good in the long run. Four more years has taken a special meaning in 2024. It was “the Roaring 20’s 100 years ago; this century it’s the “Deploring 20’s.” In 1924, we had Calvin Coolidge, the quietest and most secure Presidential term holder in our history, win every state outside the united South with the exception of Wisconsin (more on this election in a future column.) The atmosphere and national temperament were 180 degrees opposed to today’s race. It was a time of growth following World War I and before the Depression, triggered by the October 1929 Wall Street Crash. All Coolidge had to deal with was Prohibition. 100 years later, nearly everything is prohibited. “Keep Cool With Coolidge.” Where are you now, Cal, when this country could really use you?

BIRD OF PARADISE ADDS ULTIMATE TROPICAL APPEAL TO THE LANDSCAPE.
I bet that a lot of us gardeners have gone on vacation to a tropical destination and upon return, look to recreate some of that tropical feel in the home landscape. The coarse texture of large leafy plants, bright colored flowers, and a blooming season that goes on forever are some of the major characteristics that a lot of these tropical plants. As long as protection from cold weather stays relevant in the planning process, you can add a couple of tropical plants to the landscape to enjoy some of that tropical isle appeal. There are many tropical plants worth mentioning but in this article, I would like to focus your attention on one of my favorites, the bird of paradise, or known to horticulturists as Strelitzia reginae. A few other names for this same plant include crane flower, bird’s tongue flower, and isigude, which is the term used by locals in Southern Africa. In fact, the bird of paradise plant originated in Southern Africa in a climate that is slightly warmer than the Gulf Coast region of the United Sates. Temperatures in South Africa rarely get below freezing unless you increase elevation and spend time in the mountains. Bird of paradise is an evergreen perennial in its native location, but in our climate freezing weather will cause issues.
The plant itself produces premium quality foliage. The leaves are bluish green in color, vary between 12 and 18 inches in length, and are paddle shaped. The leaves emerge from stems that get 2 to 3 feet long. A mature plant can be nearly 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The flowers are what make this plant stand out amongst its peers. They resemble a tropical bird peaking out from behind the leaves when in bloom. Five bright orange sepals about 4.5 inches long protect two cobalt blue petals to form a bird of paradise flower. Five of those flowers emerge from an orange and green boat-shaped spathe. The blooms occur intermittently throughout the warm season in the Gulf Coast region of the U.S.
Plant bird of paradise early in the growing season after the fear of frost. Choose a sunny location on the southern side of a larger structure to provide protection from cold north winds in winter. Add finished compost to the area and work into the soil so that your new plant can establish a root system quickly. For those in areas with cooler winter temps consider planting in a container that can be moved under protection during cold weather events.
Bird of paradise plants bloom more consistently when they get overcrowded. This means that in the ground plant may take a couple of years before they put out a significant number of flowers. Container-grown plants shouldn’t be repotted often. Rather, treat them like bougainvillea and allow them to get root bound.
Every plant has common pests that show up from time to time. Scale and mealy bugs are the two most common insect pests seen on bird of paradise plants. Both pests can be managed using horticultural oil or neem oil. For serious infestations think about applying a systemic insecticide like imidacloprid in combination with the previous mentioned oils.
Look for bird pf paradise plants at your local plant nursery or garden center. A lot of businesses will bring in these plants early in the growing season along with hibiscus, bougainvillea, tibouchina, and other common tropical plants grown in Southern Florida. However, you may also find plants in the house plant or foliage plant section of the greenhouse. The only way to find one is to get out and start looking!

Will Afton
Hi,
Hope all is well with you. I am still riding around in the wheelchair, still can’t put any weight on the foot/leg. Got the cast off and now have a boot, which is heavier than the cast was. From the frying pan into the fire! But at least I can take the boot off while I sit on the recliner with the leg elevated. Boot must be on before I can get up. It has now been a month, stick a fork in me, I am done!!! I still have a ballerina foot. Hopefully one of the wedges will be removed next Friday and at the 6 week point PT will begin and the stretching and bending of the foot will start. Not looking forward to the pain of that. But, Hopefully soon I will be able to walk on both feet again!
By Paula Johnson
But, in the meantime, with leg and foot propped up on a chair with pillows for added elevation, I managed to actually paint a cool penguin to get me in some kind of cheerful mood. I did say things would jumbled up as I can only reach certain things so here we go. From what I have gathered from online classes and research (since I can’t go to any conventions) plaids are in again this year. For this one I did a light blue background with dark blue stripes for the plaid. Added my peginun, adorned him with his cute little knit cap with the fuzzy pom pom. In the center of the snowflakes and randomly in the background I added rhinestones to give the piece some sparkle. I also add a few drops here and there of liquid glass. You can paint the cap any color you would like. Wouldn’t he look adorable with a red and tan cap? I am going to paint one and also a green one, I will let you know how they come out. I think I may go back and add eyelashes and eyebrows. What do you think?
Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? Mine...I think I will try to do something Fallish. If I can get things down.
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

We have seen some of these names more than others, but they all deserve some cheers from the Louisiana fanbase or another reason for you to watch the Paris Olympiad.
Now, let us turn to what the current roster looks like for the Bayou Bengals. Since practice officially has started, we can go into a little more detail of who is positioned where.
Quarterback
Starter: Garrett Nussmeier, 6-2, 200 pounds, RJr.
Backups: Rickie Collins, 6-2, 205 pounds, Fr.; AJ Swann, 6-2, 229 pounds, Jr.; Colin Hurley, 6-1, 213 pounds, Fr.
The starting quarterback job belongs to Nussmeier and there is absolutely no debating that! Now, the backup battle is not as clear cut as maybe it should be. 2nd yr. quarterback Rickie Collins and Vanderbilt transfer AJ Swann will add some intrigue to this position group for a while. Swann brings game management skills but needs time to get accustomed to the new system. While, Collins has more athletic ability which makes it seem as if thrown into the fire he would have a notable season.

APARTMENT/HOUSE
RENTAL in Gulfport, MS. 2,3,4,5 bedrooms, Price range $550 - $950. Call 228-867-8811.
LSU’s running back corps might seem to be led by sixth-year senior Josh Williams, but make no mistake, this job should belong directly with Kaleb Jackson! However, John Emery, Jr. did not come back to sit on the bench, and we need to look out for true freshman lightning bolt Caden Durham. To the uncommon eye, this would look like a team lacking depth, but I believe this is one of the most dynamic backfields we have had in years.
With LSU planning to take advantage of what could be the best offensive line in history, these running backs will have more time to break free often and contribute to big plays.
Wide Receiver
While losing 2 1st round wide receivers, this group might have names you are not as accustomed to hearing but it is a room full of talent. The initial starters are expected to be Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton, and Aaron Anderson. However, this rotation will also include the heavy talented trio of CJ Daniels, Zayvion
Thomas, and Kyle Parker, while backups include Landon Ibieta, Shelton Sampson Jr., Kylan Billiot, and Jelani Watkins.
I suspect the names we will hear the most will be Lacy, Daniels, Thomas & Parker. With Hilton & Anderson also spending a good amount of time on the outside. One thing is certain, with so many options, Nussmeier will have plenty of weapons to drive the bus for a creative passing game that will see the ball finding a ton of names involved. Which aligns perfectly with Nussmeier’s style as a quarterback and bring excitement to the offense.
With a bit of an unproven receiving corps, the room of tight ends looks to be an added highlight to this expanded passing game. Taylor is the first name you will hear and is just waiting to breakout and become an integral part of the passing game.
Brian Kelly has always been known to consistently have groups of top-tier tight ends with numerous being drafted into the NFL. The talent does not end with Taylor but backing him up with Markway, Pimpton and Super Freshman Green. With each of them having unique skills we might end up talking about this room being one of the most productive in Tiger history!
Offensive Line
In what is unusual in the college game, this LSU offensive line is as well-known as any group on the team. The projected starters for 2024 being Will Campbell, Garrett Dellinger, DJ Chester, Miles Frazier, and Emery Jones.
Let us hope that we don’t have to know the talented group of backups as well as the starters who include Bo Bordelon, Tyree Adams, Paul Mubenga, Coen Echols, Khayree Lee, Ethan Calloway, Weston Davis, and
Ory Williams.
This group is a top contender for the Joe Moore award the same award won by the line in the historical 2019. It is almost unthinkable yet true that this line is even better from left to right in 2024. This is easily the offensive strength of the team and will look to create a presence and set the tone for their attacks on opponents both in the run game and in space.
Rotation: Paris Shand, Da’Shawn Womack, Jalen Lee, Kimo Makane’ole, Gabe Reliford, Jay’viar Suggs, Dominick McKinley, Shone Washington, Dylan Carpenter
Backups: Kolaj Cobbins, Ahmad Breaux, De’Myrion Johnson, CJ Jackson
As strong as the offensive line is, there are way more questions about LSU’s defensive line that will have a variety of looks to throw at opposing offenses this season. A revamped defensive coaching staff was a huge step to promise for the season. Blake Baker looks to have added a tenacious attacking mentality, while the additions of defensive assistants, Bo Davis, Kevin Peoples & Corey Raymond solidify this staff and make it on paper to be one of the most highly touted staffs in recent memory. There is a bit of depth concern at the tackle positions but the transfer portal hoped to have taken care of that concern.
Not to mention, the biggest addition was bringing in line coach Davis, from Texas who is considered the best in the business on the interior and Edge Coach Peoples from Missouri who is known as one of the best coaches at bringing pressure and most are confident at their ability to make a much-needed improved impact on the field.
Linebackers
Starters: Harold Perkins, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound junior, and Greg Penn III, a 6-foot-2, 234-pound senior.
Rotation: Whit Weeks, a 6-foot-3, 228-pound sophomore, and West Weeks, a 6-foot-2, 234-pound senior.
This corps, led by Coach Baker and spearheaded by Perkins could end up being one of the deepest units on the defensive side of the ball. With plenty of options for playing time, at years end this unit could end up being one of the best in the SEC. Perkins is back at the WILL position with the Tigers, which most hope he could play more instinctively and display the mastery of finding the football.
I do not think Penn will remain a starter for long as it will become clear that Whit Weeks has showcased enough versatility as a freshman that it would be hard to keep him off the field. His speed alongside Perkins is too valuable to not have them play together. Look for the Tigers to occasionally move Perkins to the edge while keeping Whit at inside linebacker next to Penn especially on 3rd down situations.
Cornerbacks
In probably one of the biggest issues of the 2023 season, a lot of people are looking for some major improvement at the cornerback position. Bringing back Corey Raymond was key to add some of the tenacious play of the past and reconnecting to the DBU moniker. This position will rely heavily on transfers, a few true sophomores and incoming freshman. Returning starters Ashton Stamps (6-0, 190) and PJ Woodland (5-11, 165) will lead the way, while seniors Zy Alexander (6-2, 194) and Jyaire Brown (5-11, 177), along with junior JK Johnson (6-0, 185), provide valuable depth. Freshmen Ju’Juan Johnson (5-11, 203), Bernard Causey (6-0, 160), Wallace Foster (5-10, 165), Michael Turner (6-1, 152), and Javien Toviano (6-1) round out the position group.
Heavy on potential but lacking big time SEC experience, this group has nine scholarship players competing for two spots, there is enough depth to work with. Alexander is expected to be fully recovered

Continued from Just Sports, pp 5
from injury an improved Stamps could be key. However, the best option could be freshman sensation PJ Woodland, who impressed coaches during spring camp and earned first team reps. Kelly does not care about class but will go with the best player, period. Woodland’s dedication this past offseason looks to have paid off as he deserves a starting role.
The only thing I will say on this group is that in my opinion Sage Ryan does not need to see any part of the field. His skill set and awareness has not contributed anything positive to this defense and he has been a detriment to the defensive side of the ball.
In a new position inside the Baker defense, this should let Burns do what he does best and that is play close to the line and just focus on making plays wherever the ball happens to be going.
We could talk about the specialists however, the returners are still a bit of a question mark at the moment and well Ramos will be the kicker and the punting position still has yet to be determined as well. Stay tuned for more on this part of the team as they are specialists but a very important part of the team.

MUSCADINES
Muscadines, a type of grape native to the southeastern United States, are particularly abundant in Mississippi. Known for their thick skins and robust flavor, muscadines have a long history in the region.
The first recorded muscadine vine was discovered by Sir Walter Raleigh’s colony in 1554 along the Scuppernong River in North Carolina, known as the original Scuppernong vine.
Muscadines are well-suited to the warm, humid climate of the south. They thrive in well-drained soils and require minimal care once established. These vines are known for their natural adaptability, making them a popular choice for home gardens. They are highly resistant to common grape diseases and pests, which reduces the need for chemical interventions.
These grapes can be included in home plantings on fence-rows or homemade trellises. When planting muscadines, it’s important to consider the type of flowers each vine produces. Muscadine vines can produce imperfect flowers, which have only female flower parts, or perfect flowers, which contain both male and female flower parts. Pollination is crucial for fruit production. A single vine with perfect flowers can pollinate up to eight surrounding vines with imperfect flowers. In a single-row planting, it is recommended to have a pollinator vine (one with perfect flowers) every third vine to ensure adequate pollination.
Muscadines require full sun for optimal growth and fruit production and prefer sandy loam soils with good drainage. Adding organic matter can improve soil fertility. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods, but overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. Pruning is necessary to maintain vine health and productivity. It helps control vine size and shape, promotes air circulation, and encourages the growth of fruitful canes.
The thick skins and high pectin content of muscadines make them ideal for making jams and jellies. Muscadines can also be used in pies and other desserts, adding a unique flavor and texture.

LASPCA PETS OF THE WEEK: SENIOR EDITION
Are you looking for a chill companion to relax and snuggle with? We’d love to introduce you to two of our senior pets up for adoption. These animals are often overlooked due to their age, but like a fine wine, our senior adoptables have been aged to purr-fection.
First up: Meet Kitty! This 13-year-old Siamese is a sweet and gentle soul looking for a loving home. Kitty is a calm and affectionate cat who enjoys the simple pleasures in life. She loves to curl up in cozy spots and bask in the warmth of the sun streaming through the window. Quiet with a serene presence, she’s always ready to offer soothing purrs and gentle headbutts to anyone who seeks her company.
Kitty is looking for a peaceful and loving home where she can be your devoted companion. She would do well in a relaxed environment and thrive with a family or individual who appreciates her gentle nature. She gets along well with other cats and would be content in a household where she can receive attention and affection.
Why Choose Kitty? She may be quiet but has a lot of love to give. This gorgeous girl is a loyal and low-maintenance companion who will bring warmth and tranquility to your home. If you’re looking for a sweet and affectionate cat to brighten your days with unconditional love, then I’m the purr-fect match for you!
Next up: Meet Cece! She’s an 8-year-old mixed breed pup searching for a patient and loving forever home. With soft fur and soulful eyes, CeCe brings a gentle and timid demeanor that is eager to blossom with the right family.
She may be shy at first, but with a little time and kindness, CeCe warms up quickly and reveals her loving and affectionate nature. She enjoys quiet moments and prefers calm environments where she can feel safe and secure. Once she trusts you, CeCe will lean in for gentle pets and cuddles, eager to show appreciation for your kindness.
CeCe gets along well with other dogs and prefers the company of adults or older children who can understand her need for patience and gentle guidance. All she needs is a family who will give her the time and space she needs to build confidence.
Why choose CeCe? If you’re looking for a sweet and gentle companion who will reward your patience with unwavering loyalty and love, consider adopting Cece. She’d love a chance to have a furr-ever home.
Both Kitty and CeCe are available for adoption at the LASPCA Plaquemines Campus at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd in Belle Chasse. We are open Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 5pm. For any questions, please call 504-934-6931 or email plaqueminescampus@laspca.org
