Tony’s Take

Few college teams can claim the success LSU has had in harvesting players from other schools via the transfer portal. Key additions on both sides of the ball, especially in the secondary, may not have rabid LSU fans comparing this year’s eight deep ballhawks to recent seasons that have yielded more defensive backs playing in the NFL than even Ohio State but transfers including Duce Chestnut and Zy Alexander, from Syracuse and Southeast Louisiana, respectively, are projected starters at corner and Denver Harris, a twice-suspended former Houston five star prospect, was considered a second team backup before an incident in early August. Harris has been disciplined by Coach Brian Kelly for his role in a fight during a practice two weeks ago and the young man may not remain on the team.

Other prominent portal players include Jayden Daniels, the preseason All-SEC quarterback, formerly of Arizona State, and Omar Speights, an All Pac 12 linebacker from Oregon State, projected as a second team all conference player. Chris Hilton and Aaron Anderson, a speedster from New Orleans two years ago, who transferred from Alabama to play for the Tigers, are two prized newcomers to add to the league’s best receivers corps. That group includes underrated Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Junior, Kyren Lacey and freshman Shelton Sampson along with the aforementioned Hilton and Anderson. Plus the Tigers have the second best tight end in the SEC in Mason Taylor and a couple of huge, promising freshmen in Mac Markway and Ka’Morreun Pimpton, who will see the field early and often.

Except for Georgia, LSU can boast the best defensive line and linebacking group in the SEC. Led by All American sophomore Harold Perkins and Speights, the six deep ‘backer group is the best in Tigertown since the 2019 season. And the defensive line may be better. Boasting Maason Smith, Mekhi Wingo, Sai’vion Jones and Ovie Oghoulo as starters, LSU has four more behind them where talent levels hardly drop. These seven players will have to exert more than their share of pressure as the secondary gets its SEC sea legs. especially at corner. Expect a greater than usual pass completion percentage on short and outside routes as Chesnut and Alexander get used to the conference speed, not to mention the best group of college receivers they might see this season when they travel to Orlando next week against Florida State. But they will find their way and by midseason, LSU could have the league’s best defense…period.

One area that will be closely monitored is special teams. LSU hasn’t been that special in years and vast improvement must come this year if the Tigers are to contend for a national championship. A number of players are on the various Watch Lists for collegiate awards like the Heisman, Bednarik and Butkus trophies but trophies don’t take the place of winning it all. And the winning needs to begin in Florida against the Seminoles. Except for Alabama, this will be the Tigers toughest test. They don’t play any other tough road games as Florida, Arkansas and Texas A&M are all at home.

Enjoy this last year of what has become traditional SEC football. Next year the world explodes as Texas and Oklahoma join the league. Big money now totally dominates college football and personally I am glad I will not be attending games in person as a season ticket holder. Expect to see fewer Traveling Tigers or Traveling Tide supporters as the geographical and financial boundries of the SEC, Big 18 (Ten???) and other conferences morph from conferences into corporate conglomerations. If you’re a Southern Cal fan, are you going to attend a conference game on the East Coast? How easy will it be to create a rivalry when you only see that team in your conference every eight or twelve years? The Golden Goose of college football is beginning to turn into fool’s gold and fewer fan fannies will fill the stadium seats. Maybe we could return to the Covid-19 days of phony cutout crowds in the stands. Why not? We’re seeing phony college football as we knew it from just a few yearsago. At least college football tailgates will remain classy, surrounding a halfempty stadium where the NIL pay plan has been replaced with professional amateurism. Bring your 100-inch screen, food, drink and hospitality….there will be very little to see inside the stadium unless you really like to spend upwards of $30,000 per season for the right to watch the game that used to be fun (and affordable) for the privilege of watching from your luxury box or section.

CINNAMON GIRL DISTYLIUM: A LOUISIANA SUPER PLANT FOR FALL 2023

The Louisiana Super Plants program is an educational and marketing campaign that introduces gardeners to ornamental plants that grow well in the Louisiana environment. A committee of university researchers and industry leaders field plant suggestions and organize trial experiments.

These plants are then observed for two years where selections are made and released to the public. This information is shared with local producers and then to local consumers through extension related educational programing. The local consumers learn about easy to grow plants and the local producers supply the demand created by the consumer. It’s a win-win situation for all!

Every year the Louisiana Super Plant program releases 3 or 4 plants throughout the year. So far in 2023, we’ve seen Evolvolus glomeratus (‘Blue Daze’ and ‘Blue my Mind’) and ‘Peggy Martin’ rose in the news. Later in the fall you will see the release of ‘Cinnamon Girl’ distylium as the Louisiana Super Plant winner for the fall.

The genus Distylium contains 18 different species in the witch hazel family known as Hamamelidaceae. All species are native to Eastern and Southeastern Asia. Distylium racemosum, isu tree or winter-hazel, is starting to become very popular in current landscape horticulture programs.

These plants offer evergreen foliage which makes them excellent choices for hedges, foundational plantings, and background uses. Some folks are even marketing them as replacements for Japanese boxwood hedges. The generic species can get tall, up to 10-15 ft tall. However, there are several hybrids within this group that stay much smaller and more compact.

‘Cinnamon Girl’ separates itself from the other distyliums with its mature size and color of its new growth. It is considered a dwarf variety that can get 2-3 ft tall and slightly wider at 3-4 ft wide. The spreading style growth habit allows it to be used in mass planting as a ground cover plant. It would be a similar size to that of a Drift rose plant. However, it’s also versatile and can be pruned for more of a formal look like you see in hedge and screen plantings. The leaves offer a somewhat fine texture that contrast well with coarse textured plants used in combination. The other interesting feature of ‘Cinnamin Girl’ is the copper-colored new foliage which is seen in early spring.

One of the characteristics of a Louisiana Super Plant is the ability to thrive in various environmental situations. Distylium plants in general are tolerant of a wide range of conditions from wet soils to dry soils. There are no major insects or disease pests to report. They prefer full sun but can tolerant some shade. When grown in more shade, plants will stretch a bit and look thinner, but they’ll surprise you with how much shade they can take before failing. Once this plant is added to the garden, you’ll understand how it made it into the Louisiana Super Plants program.

Look for ‘Cinnamon Girl’ distylium and other Louisiana Super Plant selections at your local plant nursery or garden center. Ask for them by name if you don’t see them in stock. There are several wholesale plant nurseries that propagate this plant to make it available for retail operations. -0-

BASIC BACKYARD WILDLIFE HABITAT

Creating your backyard habitat can be very easy once you understand that wildlife, just like people, have three basic needs. These needs food, water, and cover promote use and provide the lifecycle needs of wildlife. A successful backyard habitat must include all three needs. It takes only a small investment of time to make your yard or garden “wildlife friendly” by adding these essentials.

You can provide food in two ways, artificial feeding - bird feeders, squirrel feeders, etc. and the preferred, natural vegetation - planting a variety of native trees, shrubs, grasses, and flowering plants that provide nuts, seeds, nectar, fruit, and other sources of nourishment. It provides a seasonal approach that is enjoyable from a gardening and recreational wildlife standpoint. This will encourage a wider range of creatures already used to using these plants. Using natural vegetation, compared to providing artificial feed, is less costly over time and is easier to maintain. Remember, including plants that provide foraging opportunities in the winter offers an almost year-round supply of food.

Providing water for both drinking and bathing is vital to wildlife. You can include it by having birdbaths, drippers, or small ponds. Garden ponds that are large enough to include water animals (fish, frogs, toads, salamanders, snails) as well as water plants add beneficial elements that complement most backyard habitat settings. Surrounding the pond with plants adds to the attraction for wildlife. Be sure the water source is dependable year-round.

Nesting and shelter areas where wildlife are protected from the weather and predators are essential. Providing a diversity of plant material that includes evergreen and deciduous trees, vines, shrubs, herbaceous plants, grasses, and ground covers lets wildlife select the right areas for their feeding, nesting, and shelter needs. Ideal habitats include plants of various sizes, densities, and types. Evergreens are particularly valuable for winter cover. Grouping plants close to sources of food and water provides the cover wildlife need to feel safe while feeding or drinking. Of course, proper selection of plants includes those that provide food as well as good cover and nesting. Living plants are only one way to provide shelter and nesting areas. Using bat houses, bird houses, toad houses, and other artificial shelters is an easy way to meet this basic need.

Well, we are oh so close to the first collegiate games of the 2023 season. With all eyes locally on Tulane & LSU, we want to dive into what the schedule might end up looking like for the Bayou Bengals.

After overachieving in some eye’s year one, the LSU Tigers are headed into year 2 under Brian Kelly. The good thing about this is that the last 2 coaches both ended their year with a national title. Returning defensive starters Harold Perkins, Mekhi Wingo and Maason Smith look to anchor the defense this upcoming season which ranked 46th in the nation last year giving up 23.7 points per game.

On the offensive side of the ball, LSU football is led by second year starting quarterback, Jayden Daniels, who is getting some pre-season Heisman talk after a strong finish to last season. The Tigers finished the season 25th in the country in points scored last season with 34.6 and look to improve upon that mark.

Here are my predictions on how the Tigers schedule will break down:

Florida State (Orlando, FL) – In a rematch of last season’s year one matchup where the Tigers were edged out by the Seminoles 24-23, LSU will avenge its loss this time around with a 38-21 victory.

Grambling (Baton Rouge, LA) – LSU will handle Grambling easily 55-0 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Look for Jayden Daniels to only play the first half and Garrett Nussmeier to show he could start for any team in the country. Also, a lot of freshmen will get plenty of valuable playing time in this one.

Mississippi State (Starkville, MS) – The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs last year in Baton Rouge 45-20. The Bulldogs are a bit of an unknown this year under first-year Head Coach, Zach Arnett. Expect the game to be close for a little while and then experience will take over for the Tigers as they roll to a big 35-10 victory.

Arkansas (Baton Rouge, LA) – Last season the Tigers defeated the Hogs 13-10 in Fayetteville. They’ll be on heightened alert this year after a close game last year. Arkansas has third year starting quarterback, KJ Jefferson back at the helm and in some eyes is the best returning quarterback in the conference. Jefferson will keep the game close for the Hogs, but the hype and homefield advantage will prove too much as the Tigers break away late squeak out a 34-17.

Ole Miss (Oxford, MS) – In a game that will be over-hyped as both teams will be coming off very physical games. LSU hosting RKansas and Ole Miss coming off of a loss in Tuscaloosa to the Crimson Water team from up north. One thing we do know is that Lane Kiffin will have his team ready but they will be physically outmatched. Bayou Bengals roll to a 39-17 victory.

Missouri (Columbia, MO) – LSU will continue its quest towards a national championship relying heavily on the run game in this one but taking the game 55-10 as they roll with confidence through the early part of their SEC schedule to bring them to 6-0 and should have them solidly in the top ten in the nation.

Auburn (Baton Rouge, LA) –Auburn has a lot of unknowns right now in year one under Hugh Freeze –after a tough pre-season battle at quarterback Michigan State transfer Payton Thorne was named the starter. Hugh Freeze has had a winning record at his previous three head coaching stops, but it won’t matter in this one as again Death Valley will come alive and be a major advantage in this game as the Tigers roll again 42-10.

Army (Baton Rouge, LA) – Expect the Tigers to have a difficult time here with the triple option attack of Army. Harold Perkins will lead the charge on defense helping LSU to a 21-3 victory in a low-scoring, drag-out ground-game affair between the two. Possession time will be limited, so the Tigers will have to make sure ball security is paramount and should as they come out on top remaining undefeated before the showdown in T-Town.

Alabama (Tuscaloosa, AL) – This is always the game that not only do these teams circle on the schedule but so do the die-hard college football fans. Even though the red sea has had a lot of turnover from a year ago this will be a usual close one. Brian Kelly will remain undefeated against the most hated man in Baton Rouge as the Bayou Bengals pull off another late heroic victory. Jayden Daniels & Harold Perkins both run their way into the Heisman conversation and the world finds out that LSU is not only talented but very deep with a 24-17 win.

Florida (Baton Rouge, FL) – As many people who were asking for Billy Napier to be the big man in charge in Baton Rouge have even more questions with him in Gainesville going into year 2. While the Gators might be better, they won’t be good enough to steal a victory from a Tiger team that is rolling with confidence. LSU is hungry to prove that year 1 under Kelly was no fluke as they take a 42-10 statement victory that’ll keep them in the same national championship conversation as Georgia.

Georgia State (Baton Rouge, LA) – Georgia State will not be taken lightly by LSU as late in the season, teams have a tendency over look games like these. Coming off a tough SEC grind including games against Alabama and Florida most recently, expect the Tigers to be a bit emotionally and physically drained at this point of the season. They’ll win the game 24-10, but the focus will remain.

Texas A&M (Baton Rouge, LA) – After last year’s 38-23 shocking defeat against the Aggies, you better believe the Tigers will be adamant about not letting this happen again – especially at home in front of a rowdy Death Valley crowd on Senior Night. This combined with a lackluster performance from the previous week against Georgia State, the Tigers will avenge a loss from last season here and take the

Page 4 AUGUST 24, 2023 - SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 METRO-PENNY PLUS! EDITION Read us online at: www.printmediaplus.com
continued on pp. 5, Just Sports

game 42-10 as Brian Kelly will have them more than ready to take on the Aggies. If all goes accordingly, the Tigers will finish the regular season 13-0 and have their second undefeated regular season in the last 4 years. At worse the Tigers should finish 10-2.

Assuming the Tigers have only 1 loss after possibly losing to Georgia in the SEC Championship game, whatever the scenario, one thing is for certain, handle your business in the regular season of the SEC, and you’re in- leaving nothing to chance.

Hope you all are staying cool. I only go outside when it is absolutely necessary. I have decided if I can’t get what I want done outside by 11 a.m., I don’t need it done.

I have been busy doing all kinds of things, besides my regular job. And I was undecided on what I was going to tell you about this time. Well, as I sit here thinking, I could show and tell you about the wedding flowers I am working on. But, I really don’t want to do that since the wedding hasn’t taken place yet. And I don’t want to ruin anything for the bride. Especially since she is related. So, I decided to get into the cooler temperature months and I am hung up on tea cups!

My favorite Canadian artist has done it again. This is the first in a series of holiday tea cups! What better way to enjoy the holidays than with a cup of tea and a cookie. This was so much fun to paint. I am not sure if you can see the glitter that is all over it but it is shiny and festive.

Well that’s it for this time.

Hope you like it. So what will your next project be?

Mine....not really sure but I know it will be fun.

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

METRO PLUS FISHING REPORT

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 10.6.22

Gary and I worked hard yesterday and decided to treat ourselves today. We did not get started as early as we would have wanted but it was a no pressure type of day. With things in the transition stage from summer to fall and hot water to cooler the fish have been moving and have been hard to come by. This was our best looking fish of the day and it went back to make another angler happy some day. As we bounced around looking and playing with shorts I got hit by sizable fish when I first saw it I knew this stud was going in the box for sure. I wanted to weigh it at the dock. When I  got in a few guys were just heading out and with a slack tide coming on and it getting breezier I figured they would struggle a bit. I decided to make their day by giving them this stud sheepshead and a 23 inch redfish I had on ice.

As we moved around we found someshort reds. I like seeing these at this time of the year. These will be our winter and spring keepers.  They grow an inch a month until they get to 16/17 inches. The one in this picture is about 20 inches.

This guy could tell a story that I would love to hear.  He had awesome power. His head was smashed in but he lived and is still doing well. It also went back for another person to enjoy the awesome power this fighter had. I wish I nlknew how it got his head so badly deformed.

After taking a break to watch the saints game we went back out to finish our adventures. We decided to see what the Empire jetties were holding on an incoming tide. We found more short reds and then this big nasty black drum decided to give Gary a run for his money. It ran him around the boat at least once and made one good run before coming to our net.

Overall we had a good relaxing day on the water doing what we like to do.

KIDS CAN COOK TOO: PUMPKIN TIME: NO GUTS, NO GLORY!

Fall has arrived and with it , Pumpkin Season ! There are many pumpkins around Halloween time. Many families are opting to paint or marker their pumpkins to avoid the mess involved in carving a pumpkin. Yes, I will admit, each year , for just a few seconds think, maybe we won’t carve a pumpkin this year. But then I quickly decide, tradition wins.

Maybe it’s because it brings back memories of my Dad carving a pumpkin with my siblings and I.A few days before Halloween, he would bring home a huge pumpkin for us. I insisted it have a great ,distinctive handle on top , and must be perfect orange and smooth. He carved the most interesting, gorgeous faces in the pumpkin and it was my job, to scoop all the seeds out. Then we would put a large candle in the pumpkin, fit the top back on, place it on our front porch and watch it glow. Magical ! After,we would go inside and bake the seeds. At first, we didn’t save the seeds. But as I grew interested in cooking, I started to save, clean and bake the seeds.

So I carried this tradition on as I had my three sons and now my five grandkids. But we don’t carve one pumpkin, everyone picks their own and carves! We have lots of pumpkin seeds to roast. We use to carve on newspaper, but the wet ,gooey seeds stick to the paper. It’s best to spread out a huge vinyl tablecloth. The seeds slip and slide, but don’t stick. Also, even the smallest child can hold one of the tools from the official pumpkin carving kits with the help of an adult. Each year my kids get more creative with their designs! My youngest son and daughter-in-”love” now host a pumpkin carving dinner party for their newly married friends Now there is a fun excuse to carve a pumpkin!

Roasted pumpkin seeds are an easy , healthy snack. I love to eat them shells and all. They are wonderfully crunchy. For years, I roasted the pumpkin seeds in olive oil. But get creative and try coconut oil . Or for a lighter version, coat seeds in a beaten egg white for a light ,crispy finish.

I used to just salt my seeds on the outside. But , if you boil the seeds in a pot of water with salt added to it for about ten minutes, the inside seeds will get a salty flavor. How much salt in the pot? Well, the water should taste like ocean sea water. a good ratio is for every 2 cups of water add 1 tablespoon of kosher salt.

Pumpkin etiquette~ Hold pumpkin on sides and cut a circle around the stem, about 3 inches away. This will give a nice size hole to get a hand in to scoop the seeds out. Use a metal spoon or a spoon from the pumpkin kit to scrape out the seeds and pumpkin guts.. Place the pumpkin seeds in a colander and run water to separate the seeds from everything else.

At this point, you can boil the seeds for ten minutes if you want them flavored inside . if you are too excited, just dry seeds with a towel, oil, salt and bake.! Heres how: Preheat oven to 400* Coat a baking sheet pan with olive oil, about a teaspoon. spread seeds in a single layer, and toss them a bit in the oil from the pan. Bake on the top rack until seeds ar light brown, 5-20 minutes, depending on the size of the seeds. Don’t let them over toast. Take out and cool completely.

Eat them, shell and all! Purists will only want salt as a seasoning. If you are feeling adventurous, experiment & have fun with seasoning blends.
