The death of WGNO Sports Director Ed Daniels hit me hard last week. The 67-year old New Orleans writer and announcer died from the complications of a massive heart attack in California the prior week at the Saints summer camp. He never regained consciousness after he was placed on a medevac flight to New Orleans.

A devout Catholic and local sports fan, Daniels worked relentlessly on his craft, from covering high school, professional and college sports to hosting television shows and podcasts. Like hard working Tim Brando before him, a sports guy I knew in Shreveport in the ’70’s , Daniels never said “no” to a sports challenge or assignment. Following in the footsteps of Jim Henderson, Hap Glaudi, Peter Finney, Bob Roesler and Buddy Dileberto, Daniels outdid them all. He was a Renaissance Man for sports while others usually specialized in either on-air or in the print media.

I met Daniels years ago in the press box at Tiger Stadium. It was my first time there as a credentialed reporter and as I looked around at the various small market writers and bloggers who populated the outer regions of the media area, there was Daniels, no entourage, no fanfare, just a guy who could have passed for a CPA or insurance salesman. He knew most of the others in the area and I finally had the chance to speak with him. I can say that no media personality I have known was as unassuming or down-to-earth as Daniels. His experience and aura should have placed him closer to the center of the press box, where most of the “name” media worked. Daniels could have been the janitor for as little attention he brought on himself. But Ed was there to do his job in such a matter-of-fact way that it didn’t matter where he sat. Ed was a redwood in a forest of saplings.

Others….Keith Spera and Jeff Duncan….have written about Daniel’s passing in recent days. Both said he was the last of his kind. I have to agree and add the names of Jerry Byrd, Jim Murray and Prescott Sullivan to that list….three men who influenced my love for sports in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Shreveport. Pretty heady company for anyone to be a part of. I’m sorry his widow and family will not have him to enjoy what would have been Daniel’s “slow down” years in sports coverage. I really never thought he would retire. He probably envisioned his passing much like it happened. Many of us “old timers” picture our final act as the central figure in a Viking funeral. Daniels was that Viking in a Saints world.

FALL VEGETABLE GARDENING

Believe it or not, summer will be coming to an end next month. As kids start going back to school, it’s time to start thinking about a fall vegetable garden. If you have never grown a fall garden, then check it out. The days are shorter (literally) and the weather is much more comfortable. I think it’s easier to garden in the fall, especially for folks trying it out for the first time. You can grow some of the common springtime vegetables like tomatoes, squash, and beans along with broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Whether you are an experienced gardener or just getting started, now is the time to start planning a fall vegetable garden.

Start preparing the garden by removing old mulch, unproductive plants from the previous season, and any unwanted vegetation. Sometimes plants like bell peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and okra may still be producing this time of year. Instead of pulling them up, work around them and allow them to continue if they are still producing (paying rent). Once most of the vegetation has been removed, cultivate the soil to begin planting bed preparation. Next, plan the layout of your garden. Start thinking of what vegetables will go where. Draw a diagram, label it with the date, and record it in a garden journal. This information will come in handy over the years as you practice crop rotation in the garden.

Some of the vegetables grown in the fall are different, but there are quite a few crops that can be grown once temperatures drop below 90° F. If you think about it, the major difference between spring and fall weather is increasing/decreasing daylight. Both seasons see moderate daytime temps and cooler nighttime temps. Obtain a copy of the LSU AgCenter’s Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide to learn planting recommendations. Check with your local extension office or visit www.lsuagcenter. com to download a digital copy. This publication contains valuable information on planting dates and recommended cultivars of all the different vegetable crops grown in Louisiana. Some of the crops that are seeded in late August and early September include snap beans, lima beans, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, Swiss chard, Chinese cabbage, collards, cucumbers, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustards, English peas, Irish potatoes, radishes, and rutabagas. Start looking for seeds of these vegetable plants to plant in the garden now. Later in the season, you will start to see transplants of the more common fall vegetable crops.

To ensure success with your fall garden, follow proper cultural practices. Plant spacing is an important concept that allows enough room for the plants to grow and develop normally but it also makes sure we don’t plant things too far apart where weeds tend to grow and become troublesome. Water is another important factor to think about. In cases where rain doesn’t provide adequate irrigation, you will need to supplement. Purchase a garden hose that reaches from the water faucet to the garden. Fertilizer is a must for productive gardens. Whether you prefer organic or conventional fertilizer methods, apply fertilizer at planting and again later in the season as a side dress application. Fall vegetable gardening can be a very rewarding experience, but you will never know if you don’t give it a try. So, get out there, pull some weeds, and grow a fall garden!

Hope you all had a very productive couple of weeks and did a lot of inside crafting. I must admit, the only time I went outside was for my usual trip to the doctor and then back to the house. Just too hot to ask my granddaughter to get the wheelchair in and out of her car to go anywhere else, even though she would have. Although, we did do Chick Fil A drive thru on our way home.

Well, I did a little something different this time. My granddaughter left Tuesday for college. She had asked me a few days before she left to paint a couple of pictures for her dorm room. She really didn’t give me a lot of time and painting on canvas is something I don’t do a lot of and is really out of my comfort zone. But, there was no way I could tell her no. So we sat down and discussed what she wanted. She wanted the paintings to fit the frames she purchased (16 X 24) The matt center cut out would be 11 X 19. Okay so we can do that. Her college colors are blue and gold. The flowers she chose were sunflowers and hydrangeas (her two favorite). I will tell you about the hydrangeas later since I am showing you the sunflowers today. I chose a light blue for the background, added some water to the paint to make a wash of thinned paint. Not too thin, but I did not want straight paint. I just kinda slipped and slapped the paint across the canvas. I then painted my leaves and tendrils and finally my flowers. And that was a wrap. *Oh, please excuse the pencil line. That was for my measurement as to where not to put the flowers and where the matt should go. Since she placed the finished painting into the frame the night before she left I did not get to take a picture of it framed. Besides, after all these years, yall know I am no photographer. Ha!Ha!Ha!

Well, That’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine....I’ll be painting something Fall on WOOD!!! And it will be fun! But, I will be learning and practicing more on canvas!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, we have football and oh so close to it counting in the win/loss column. No week will go bye from now until February without some game of pigskin being played and it is glorious! Before I get too far into this column, I would be remiss if I did not mention some thoughts on the recent passing of legendary journalist Ed Daniels. I have known that name ever since I was a kid who was either reading, listening or watching some type of sports article, sports cast or game. Especially, once I got to playing sports and old enough to grasp the concept of football, Mr. Daniels was the guy we turned to every Friday night to see if we could catch my older brothers on television and just to get recaps of high school action.

Once, I reached high school and my future goal was to be a sports journalist did I truly begin to understand what all had to go into a sports cast. As I was trying to recap weekly sports that was broadcasted after my high school’s morning channel one. The same show where Anderson Cooper cut his teeth in the journalism industry. Before I decided to play football, I was busy filming the games week in and week out and often was side by side with the FNF crew as they were getting highlights of our team. However, during my senior year, alongside my fellow seniors I was blessed to be filmed for the opening of one of the weekly segments. Now every time I hear the song, You got a fast car, it immediately takes me back to that moment and how special it was to have a small part in the show.

While, I moved onto college, I continued my journalistic career and got an even more hands on approach while also competing in the FNF weekly Trivia and pickem contests. During this time, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Daniels numerous times whether while broadcasting or picking up my weekly winnings from his contests. Not to brag, but I won a bunch of them and was a common face at the WGNO studios picking them up. I was able to win numerous gift certificates, a flat top cooker and one year the highly contested grand prize of a $500 Smoothie King gift pack which included a signed Jimmy Graham football. But, that is a story for another time.

As I have continued my career in sports journalism, Mr. Daniels always remembered me through the years and would mention our initial meetings at the studio picking up my prizes. He had an amazing memory not just for sports stats but people’s faces and especially their names. He was the face you turned to when it came to high school sports as he single handedly spear headed the notoriety of Louisiana High School athletics. His time on earth might have ended but his legacy will forever live on in history of Louisiana sports.

With high school football weeks away, 2024 will not be the same without the expertise of Mr. Friday Night retelling the top stories of the night.

With everything being so wide open in high school athletics in both Louisiana and Mississippi there is no way that I will give any predictions on that level yet. However, the college scene will likely come down to the SEC and the Big 10 with the SEC eventually coming back with the title.

As far as the NFL goes, we will go into more depth with what the Saints will do in our next issue but that division is wide open. And the NFC will be wide open as well while the AFC will continue to go through Kansas City.

One thing is for sure, that the Super Bowl will be rocking whether the Saints are in it or not simply because it will be another spotlight to put on the city of New Orleans. Let us just hope that the light bill is paid this time and no power outages occur during the halftime show.

Don’t forget, you are invited to check out our sports only podcast. You can find us online under https://anchor.fm/flablete or on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or may other platforms. FALL WEED CONTROL BEGINS SOON!

Control of Winter annual weeds begins towards the end of Summer and be-ginning of Fall. Preemergence herbicides should be applied in late-August early September to prevent these annual winter weeds from becoming an issue. To be ef-fective, pre-emergence herbicides must be applied before weed seed germination and before weeds emerge. These herbicides require 0.25 to 0.5 inches of rainfall or irrigation for activation so try to time the application within a day or two or ex-pected rainfall, but not a torrential downpour where all of the product ends up being washed away.

All of the herbicides in this list can be used on established, southern turfgrasses. In some instances it may be beneficial to apply ½ the recommended rate and then reapply the remainder of the rate 4-6 weeks later to provide better control. However, READ, and FOLLOW, THE LABEL completely to make sure you can use it in your situation. A partial list of common (active ingredient) and trade names for Pre-emergent Weed Control in Home Lawns by Homeowners can be found below. Just as with an application of fertilizer, going in two different directions that total the labeled rate will provide a more consistent barrier to emerging weeds rather than an application in one single direction.

Depending upon label directions and application restrictions for the particular product you purchase, reapplication may be beneficial in 6-8 weeks. It is not recom-mended you use a product that contains a fertilizer carrier at this time as the turf is get-ting prepared for winter dormancy and encouraging a flush of growth can be detri-mental.

Common Name – Trade Name (partial list)

1. dithiopyr - Sta-Green Crab Ex; Green Light Crabgrass Preventer; Vigoro Preemergent Crabgrass and Weed Preventer

2. pendimethalin - Scotts Halts Crabgrass Preventer

3. oryzalin - Southern Ag. Surflan A.S.

What can I do now to prepare for the unexpected for my pets or my older family members?

In the confusion that accompanies a person’s unexpected illness, accident, or death, pets may be overlooked. In some cases, pets are discovered in the person’s home days after the tragedy. To prevent this from happening to your pet, take these simple precautions: Find at least two responsible friends or relatives who agree to serve as temporary emergency caregivers in the event that something unexpected happens to you. Provide them with keys to your home; feeding and care instructions; the name of your veterinarian; and information about the permanent care provisions you have made for your pet. Make sure your neighbors, friends, and relatives know how many pets you have and the names and contact numbers of the individuals who have agreed to serve as emergency caregivers. Emergency caregivers should also know how to contact each other.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

WHY WE DON’T HAVE COOL SEASON GRASS LAWNS

Cool season turfgrasses include bluegrasses, fescues, and ryegrasses. Here in Mississippi, bermuda, zoysia, centipede, and St. Augustine are considered the primary warm season turfgrasses, although we do have some centipede lawns with a mixture of carpet grass. There are other warm season grasses such as Bahia, buf-falo, and kikuyu but we really don’t consider these for our lawns here.

Having lived in Oklahoma for several years working in the lawn and landscape industry, I have seen my share of fescue lawns. We maintained primarily bermuda, zoysia, and fescue but, there were no centipede or St. Augustine lawns. Much like here, some would over-seed their warm season grass lawn with ryegrass in the fall to have lush green turf during the colder months, but it wasn’t permanent. Once the weather starting warming up, the ryegrass was controlled to allow the warm season grass to flourish.

Cool season grasses, specifically bluegrasses and fescues, make beautiful lawns. Except for far north-ern Mississippi, do you ever wonder why we don’t or can’t grow cool season grasses as our main turfgrass this far south? The reason is warm season grasses have a genetic structure that allows them to thrive in hotter cli-mates. Warm season grasses produce deeper roots than their cool sea-son counterparts to help the grass remain green during long periods of drought. Most warm season grasses produce rhizomes and/or stolons (stems below and above ground) that allow the grass to spread and sprout new plants. It takes more energy to actively grow in hot weath-er, so these grasses are more efficient at carbohydrate (food for ener-gy) production.

The difference in the genetic structures between cool season and warm season grasses is one carbon compound. Cool season grasses begin photosynthesis with a three-carbon compound, and warm season grass-es begin photosynthesis with a four-carbon compound. These are called C-3 and C-4 plants respectively. In fact, close to 95% of all plants are C-3 plants.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use carbon dioxide and water to produce food (carbohydrates) and oxygen using sunlight. These carbohydrates can serve as energy sources or energy re-serves. However, during hot, dry days, a C-3 plant will close its stomata, the microscopic openings in the leaves which allows for water transpiration and intake of carbon dioxide. This stomatal closure results in less water loss but no intake of carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. This is part of a process called photorespira-tion. C-4 plants, such as warm season grasses, avoid photorespiration.

As a result, cool season grasses are not as efficient at fixing car-bon dioxide at the beginning of the photosynthetic process as warm season grasses. This results in less carbohydrates (or food) for stored energy. For this reason, as hot weather approaches creating stresses on the grass, cool season grasses do not have enough energy reserves to remain actively growing. Cool season grasses want to go dormant in the summer to save that energy. They are, however, actively growing in the spring and fall when fertilization is needed.

If you’ve traveled throughout the United States you’ve probably noticed a clear difference in the lawns in northern and southern areas. Cool season grasses make really nice lawns. In fact, the bluegrass lawns and fields throughout Kentucky, Missouri, etc. are some of my favorite. Unfortunately, due to one less carbon compound, I will not have a bluegrass lawn.

VENOMOUS SNAKES

When it comes to snakes in Mississippi we have plenty of them. Even though they may be scary they also are useful. Snakes feed on rodents that can be very pesky to us humans so that alone makes them beneficial. There are 55 different kinds of snakes in Mississippi out of those only six are venomous.

So you are way more likely to come in contact with a nonvenomous snake than a venomous snake. Whenever you are enjoy-ing the outdoors always be alert and when you do encounter snakes it is best to leave them alone. Seventy five percent of people bitten by venomous snakes are harassing or trying to kill the snake when they are bitten. Snakes only bite when they feel threatened.

The best way to identify venomous snakes is to become familiar with their color patterns and other characteristics. There are nonvenomous snakes that have color patterns that are similar to those of venomous snakes. Most of the venomous snakes have a large triangle shaped head except the coral snake which has a narrow head. Head shape is a very useful in identification but is never 100 percent accurate. Also snakes can look different at different ages and regions where they live.

Always remember to, keep your property clean, and watch where you walk, sit or place your hands and whatever you do don’t try and pick up a snake. There are many snake repellants on the market but they do not work. Below are pictures (Pictures from MWFP website) of venomous snakes found in Mississippi.
