Tony’s Take
The top four transfer players for LSU are almost homophones in the above title to this article. Eighteen transfer players have been showing their chops for several weeks now to earn starting roles against a powerful and experienced Clemson team in both squad’s openers in less than two weeks.
The biggest need has been in the defensive backfield, where Tamarcus COOLey will likely man one of the safety positions. This COOL, former North Carolina State redshirt sophomore had nine starts at nickel in Carolina and that qualifies him for a coverage safety role. He’s smart, physical and experienced and little of those qualities applied during the past three years to LSU defensive backs.
Cornerbacks hardly got close enough to read the numbers on the jerseys of opposing receivers during the past three years and did precious little if they even could keep up or try to tackle them. Mansoor DELANE, the most experienced secondary player on the LSU roster, seems to have settled into a potential lockdown position for his fourth and final collegiate season. This senior started 29 games for the Hokies of Virginia Tech and hardly had a pokey game as he stayed in DE LANE against quality receivers during his first three years back East. Expect more of the same against SEC wideouts.
Compared to a bowling ball, Bernard GOODEN is a 6’l”, 268 pound smaller throwback to the great Anthony “Booger” McFarland of a generation ago. This high energy defensive tackle is undersized but his first step is so quick that he generates leverage and power against much taller and heavier offensive linemen. Expect “Booger-like” play from this South Florida transfer, also a heavily experienced senior, vitally necessary on a depleted room for defensive linemen. If he’s Booger-like, he’s a GOOD ‘UN.
HALT! was a term you rarely heard from LSU safeties during the past several seasons but then again, there was no one back there quite like A J HAULCY. A 222 pound transfer from Houston, another experienced senior starter, Haulcy has the instincts and power to replicate the play of LaRon Landry from 2003 along with the instincts of a Grant Delpit. This year, rarely will it happen that anyone will get over the top on LSU with Haulcy and Cooley manning the field.
These four experienced transfers can be penciled in as starters for the August 30th game against Clemson at Clemson. Five others are also locks or near locks to take the field with the first teams.
Braelin Moore was the most necessary transfer by far for the offense. LSU’s starting center last year, D J Chester, is more suited for guard. So an entire remake of the LSU line depends critically on the redshirt junior’s play as the offensive line’s quarterback. Moore’s health, along with Garrett Nussmeier’s, is the most important intangible for this team. Coaches say Moore has set up the rest of the line for success.
Jack Pyburn has been earmarked as the team’s best defensive end at setting the edge. He’s also the middle man tackle in the team’s pass/rush package. Another senior.
Bauer Sharp has looked that way as this experienced tight end is no Mason Taylor at this stage of his career but gives everything he has on the practice field and shows especially well in the run game. He’s also no slouch in getting separation on route running and becomes a very good ball carrier once the catch is secured.
And he is no Emery Jones or Will Campbell on the offensive line by any means. But yet another senior transfer, Josh Thomson, should be more than a serviceable guard, where he has secured the right side position.
Grant Chadwick will handle punting duties and this true sophomore should improve an embarrassingly bad punting game from 2024. Chadwick played for Middle Tennessee.
Nine transfers. Nine starters. 50%. Wow! And to think the two most explosive players from the transfer portal won’t be starting but one has become only one of two LSU preseason All Americans. Barion Brown lit up Lexington last year as a receiver and kick return athlete and that should continue as the senior battles a crowded receivers room for a starting job. However, when the other team kicks, look for Brown to receive.
Oklahoma’s Nic Anderson is the tallest receiver that LSU has at 6’4” and has come close to becoming a starter since clearing concussion protocol earlier this year. He has reliable hands and maintains his speed through his route progressions. Coaches laud his progression and consistency and look for Anderson in most three and four-receiver sets.
Of the other seven transfers, watch for Patrick Payton at defensive end, where he is learning to defend against the run following more specified duties at Florida State.
Ja’Keem Jackson is a redshirt sophomore cornerback who will come into play in most nickel and dime sets and is still in a battle with last season’s LSU occasional starter, junior Ashton Stamps, to start across from Delane, mentioned here earlier.
And note the progress of Jimari Butler, a senior transfer from Nebraska, who will play a key role in a deep defensive end position because of his experience.
Of the remaining four transfers, the most vital is former Mississippi State backup quarterback, Michael Van Buren. This sophomore is learning a new offense but don’t forget - the most passing yards ever put up in a SEC game against an SEC opponent was done right here in Louisiana by Mississippi State. And the last Van Buren to ever play for LSU did a pretty damn good job before the days of Billy Cannon and Jerry Stovall. Steve Van Buren is in Pro Football Hall of Fame, enshrined there 60 years ago.

AUGUST IS TIME TO PREPARE ROSES FOR THE FALL BLOOMING SEASON.
Roses have a deep history with the gardening public. They are some of the most popular landscape plants of all time. Just do a quick google search on their cultivation history and you’ll find a well-documented background of how close humans and roses have become over the years. You can really appreciate that long association after looking into all the different hybrids that have come out of breeding programs over the past decades. Some of the flower forms and color combinations available are truly remarkable. From the long-stemmed hybrid tea roses to the multi-branched floribunda roses, several rose types appeal to a multitude of landscape situations. Groundcover roses offer low growing and spreading type growth habits to help cover large areas of bed. Climbing roses offer artistic appeal as they grow upon wooden fences and cast-iron trellises, and garden arbors. Shrub roses provide easy maintenance and prolific flowering.
Roses take a beating in our growing conditions. Our hot and humid climate puts a lot of stress on plants. Blackspot disease can almost completely defoliate a rose bush. Several species of beetle, flower thrips, leafhoppers, and spider mites can wreak havoc on a stressed plant. Rejuvenate tired, stressed-out roses by pruning and fertilizing in August. The removal of damaged foliage through pruning will encourage the plant to produce new leaves. As temperatures start to cool down later in September, the plant will produce a second round of blooms. It won’t be as plentiful as in spring, but just as delightful.
Using a pair of sharp hand pruners, remove any broken or damaged branches from the bush. On the second pass, look for and remove any branches that rub or cross each other. You may lightly shape the top but aim to remove no more than one third of the bush height. Leaves house the organs that perform photosynthesis; leave enough so the plant can make its own energy! Remove old leaves and pruning debris from the garden bed and dispose in a trashcan to prevent the spread of blackspot disease. Apply a light application of general all-purpose fertilizer. There are several products that include roses in the label. Some of which also include insecticide if insect problems are of concern. Follow the labels instructions pertaining to how much fertilizer is needed for the size of plants you have in the garden. Apply a fresh layer of mulch and water everything thoroughly. As new leaves are produced, provide protection from Black Spot (BS) disease by making application of a fungicide. Chlorothalonil is a common active ingredient that can be found in most garden centers and plant nurseries. Read the label and follow the instructions for spraying roses on a schedule to prevent BS. It is possible to transplant roses this time of year, but it is advised to wait later in the year when plants go dormant. If you find yourself looking to add a new rose bush to your garden, then take the time now to review mail order catalogues and online plant nurseries for information on new and different varieties for the coming year. Garden centers and plant nurseries have their best rose bush inventories right after the New Year when the bare root shipments start to arrive.

Hope you all are doing well and adjusting to the children and grandchildren being back in school. Are you lonely yet? I am sure you are finding a lot of things to catch up on and keep you busy. And possibly relax a little. Things have been really crazy for me. Hoping they slow down soon.
On the bright side, One of the artists I follow is really great about giving us line drawings. She then challenges us to finish the design. We choose our own color pallet. All we have to do is decide on the background color and the colors we want to paint the objects in the design. I really like the way colors pop on a dark background , especially flowers. This was such a fun piece to paint. Think I will put it on one of my cabinet doors, beside the olives that I painted. I have an assortment of different designs in the kitchen. They really brighten up the place. Yes, I am pushing FALL!
Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know, But I know it will be fun!
Sincerely Paula Johnson

70 YEARS OF WORK; STILL HAVE MORE TO DO
In 1955, I received my first paycheck for $18 gross pay for being an extra in a John Wayne movie. I had make a few bucks earlier with a lemonade stand but that really didn’t count. I remember little about the lemonade but nearly everything the day when I was a ten-year old kid in makeup, running onto a back-end paddle wheeler headed from mainland China to Formosa, which became Taiwan years later. Of course it was all make-believe, movie location shots, done in Marin County, north of San Francisco, in a movie called Blood Alley. My uncle was the 2nd assistant director on the set and he had my mother get me a Social Security card so I could have the opportunity to enter the great American capitalistic system.
The same year I got my first paper route. It was the beginnngof a romance between sweat and swag, learning how to work and present myself to adults without helicopter parents hanging around. I actually made more money on the route in two years than I did from most of my junior high and high school jobs because I was paid commission and it opened the door to possibilities that most kids didn’t understand.
I worked as a busboy, janitor and door-to-door salesman in high school before getting the opportunity to work for two brothers who had a combination liquor store, grocery store, greasy spoon diner on the first floor and a barely legal cathouse upstairs. I stocked groceries, cooked on Saturday mornings and mostly restocked and packaged alcohol for the Ravettis, who had a real bird’s nest operation on the ground with the only walk-in liquor establishment on a direct line between San Francisco’s Financial District and and the train station that took commuters to their homes in suburbs south of the city. My last year in high school I sold candy on Sunday’s to couples and families parked out by the Los Angeles Airport watching the planes land and involved in other activities as well, not to be mentioned here. All this paid for most of my college education.

I started by college days in the summer between high school and my freshman year, selling encyclopedias door-to-door in Los Angeles and on the road in three neighboring states. But my best job was working as a copyboy for the The New York Times, Western Edition, located in Los Angeles. For its existence during the nearly 18 months from August, 1962 until late January of 1964, the provincial New Yorkers on its staff and back home in Manhattan learned what not to do to make their newspaper effective outside of the East Coast corridor. But I didn’t care. As the youngest person ever hired by the Times, I learned a great deal about politics and life. The biggest week came just before the paper ceased operations that January. The story of the assassinationof President John F. Kennedy was brought front and center tome as I was a small part of what became a smoothly running professional newsroom from the tragic news on that sunny Friday afternoon until after the funeral.
1964 brought me South, just in time for civil rights drama and the escalation of the Vietnam Conflict, not quite a war then. My time at LSU Baton Rouge was life-changing for me. I met my future wife,I found out what racism was all about in its uglier forms, I solidified a bond with the Tigers that endures to this day.
Many odd jobs in college - working at Georgia Pacific three summers, selling shoes, working at a clothing store, working at a full service gas station, being a bartender at a national pizza operation, working in the girl’s cafeteria at LSU, working at a local motel - and I was ready to take on the world.
I won’t bore you further with details from my two professional careers but I had the majority of my first 22 years in radio, television and ad agency work and virtually the past 37 years in some type of print media. These past two-plus years have been a challenge with physical ailments and the rapidly-evolving world of communications. But I feel I still have something left in the tank and when the day comes when this column stops and also my cartoon map business, I still want contribute by being a mentor to those younger folk looking for guidance in a less personal world. I don’t want to go gentle into that good night and I continue to look forward to my credentialed covering of LSU football from the press box for my fifth season, perhaps joined this year by a younger colleague who is a professional photographer and has been dreaming of finding a gig as an on-the-field game day photographer. I think it will happen. -0-

AZAELA LACE BUG
The Azalea Lace Bug is the most common pest of azaleas. Heavy infestations of this insect can result in extensive damage to the plants. Damage to plants is caused by feeding of both adults and immature insects.
The azalea lace bug feeds on the plant by sucking sap using piercing/sucking mouthparts. Initial damage to the plant gives leaves a stippled appearance. This stippled appearance may be mistaken for damage caused by spider mites; however, looking on the underside of leaves will allow the true problem to be identified.
Adult azalea lace bugs are approximately 1/8 inch long with white wings and dark markings. The immatures are smaller, darker in color and covered with spines. Cast off skins and excrement from the azalea lace bug can accumulate on the underside of leaves and can also be used as a way to diagnose damage from the azalea lace bug if the insect is not present. Azalea lace bugs prefer plants growing in sunny locations and these are more prone to attack than plants growing in shade.
Lace bugs overwinter as eggs, and heavy infestations can build by early summer. This insect can go through several generations in a year with populations increasing through the year. Recovery from damage by azalea lace bugs can take a significant amount of time even after the insects are controlled. Due to this, plants should be checked for insects regularly, and treatments applied if lace bugs are observed in significant numbers. Control of azalea lace bug is best achieved through the use of systemic insecticides. Products containing the active ingredient imidacloprid are particularly effective.

Control of Winter annual weeds begins towards the end of Summer and beginning of Fall. Preemergence herbicides should be applied beginning in late-August to early September to prevent these annu-al winter weeds from becoming an issue. To be effective, pre-emergence herbicides must be applied before weeds emerge. To be effective, they must be applied before weed seed germination. These herbicides require 0.25 to 0.5 inches of rainfall or irrigation for activation so try to time the application within a day or two or expected rainfall, but not a torrential downpour where all of the product ends up being washed away. All of the herbicides in this list can be used on established, southern turfgrasses.
READ, and FOLLOW, THE LABEL completely to make sure you can use it in your situation. A par-tial list of common (active ingredient) and trade names of preemergence weed control in home lawns for homeowners can be found below. Just as with an application of fertilizer, going in two different directions that total the labeled rate will provide a more consistent barrier to emerging weeds rather than an application in one single direction.
Depending upon label directions and application restrictions for the particular product you purchase, reapplication may be beneficial in 6-8 weeks. It is not recommended you use a product that contains a fertiliz-er carrier at this time as the turf is getting prepared for winter dormancy and encouraging a flush of growth can be detrimental.

CLEAR THE SHELTERS: GIVE EVERY PET A CHANCE THIS AUGUST
The Louisiana SPCA is thrilled to be part of the 11th annual Clear the Shelters campaign, a nationwide movement dedicated to finding loving homes for pets in need throughout August. This heartwarming effort is made possible through our partnership with NBCUniversal, Greater Good Charities, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Over the last two months, we have welcomed more than 940 animals into our care, which is nearly one and a half times the number that found homes during the same period. Right now, our shelter is at full capacity with over 400 animals waiting for their second chance.
Clearing the shelters is not just about reducing numbers. It directly creates space for us to help more animals in urgent situations throughout Orleans and Plaquemines Parish. Every adoption improves an orphaned animal’s chance of finding a loving forever home where they can thrive. Also, this nationwide effort supports our sheltering operations, community programs, and ability to respond quickly during emergencies. When kennels are empty, our shelter can welcome the next animal in need without delay.
To encourage adoptions this month, we are offering reduced fees all month long. Puppies and small dogs can be adopted for $210, while large dogs weighing over 40 pounds are only $25. Kittens can be adopted for $75, and adult cats for just $25. Also, our underdogs, heartworm-positive dogs, and foster dogs are available at no cost to approved adopters. These reduced fees make it easier than ever to find your new best friend.
Even if you are not ready to adopt, there are still many ways to make a difference. Donations made through the Clear The Shelters campaign website will be matched dollar for dollar by Hill’s Pet Nutrition until the matching funds run out. Every contribution directly impacts the animals in our care, providing food, medical treatment, and comfort. You can also foster a pet in need, even for a weekend, which helps free up space in the shelter for another animal. Each act of kindness brings us closer to giving every animal the home they deserve.
View our adoptable animals available this month by visiting our website at louisianaspca. org/adopt and make a matched donation through the Clear the Shelters campaign by visiting donate.clearthesheltersfund.org/louisianaspca. Know that your support this August can change lives, open the door to a brighter future for animals across our community, and leave a lasting smile on a changed animal face.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Razzy, King and Petey are three kittens available for adoption through START. All three were rescued from situations that were unsafe for little kittens, such as from under a car or out on the street, and placed in foster homes where they were able to thrive. All are neutered, tested and vaccinated and ready to go to their forever homes. If you are thinking of adding a kitten to your family, be sure to contact START or your local shelter or rescue organization to find out how you can meet some of the many wonderful kitties available for adoption. There are so many cats and kittens in need of homes this time of year.
