He’s not Joe Burrow but Jayden Daniels is the best quarterback in the SEC in 2023. He’s not Ja’Marr Chase or Justin Jefferson but Malik Nabers is the top wideout in this year’s SEC offerings. They might not win the Joe Moore Award as the best offensive line in college football but they’re ranked in the top three nationally at LSU. And hybrid linebacker/disrupter Harold Perkins is the preseason favorite to be the National Defensive Player of the Year, something LSU has not had since Glenn Dorsey in 2007.

Lots of water has passed under the bridge and through the transfer portal as LSU and second year coach Brian Kelly prepare to regain and hold the top position in the SEC West against reigning national champion Georgia and perennial powerhouse Alabama. Both schools lost a boatload of All Americans and NFL neophytes from last season but Georgia is in much better shape than the Tide because of their experience and depth, plus the nation’s laughably easiest football schedule, which has no challenge to the Dawgs until November.

A seven-year run of super game managers and All American quarterbacks has ended as Alabama looks for its next best signal caller. Next best is correct after the last four starters for Nick Saban, capped with a Heisman season two years ago with Bryce Young. Three candidates together don’t equal any of the former ‘Bama players as these freshmen, sophomores and transfers tentatively try to become the man in Tuscaloosa. In Athens, the Dawgs need a replacement for Stetson Bennett and junior Carson Beck seems to have the job this summer. However, the Tigers have their man who is by far the best combination of arm and leg in the league. Once Daniels continues his confidence throwing sooner and downfield as he did against Purdue in LSU’s bowl game, he’ll receive serious Heisman consideration along with his preseason All-SEC first team status.

The average LSU fan will need a program to recognize many of the players starting or backing up LSU’s top 44 players, especially in the secondary where DBU has become T(ransfer)DBU. Only Greg Brooks,Major Burns and Sage Ryan, all safeties, are known quantities to the fan base. However, Kelly and his staff have done a masterful job of using the transfer portal to partially replace the seven secondary losses from last year, where cornerback will definitely be a “meet and greet” event for the seven newbies and returning squad members from last year.

LSU’s receiver unit is ranked third nationally. the aforementioned offensive line third also, the defensive line sixth and linebackers second. The defensive units rank second only to Georgia in the conference, where the biggest difference is in the secondary. The good news for the Tiger defenders is that they don’t play any better offensive team in the SEC than they do in Orlando to start the season against Florida State. In Jordan Travis, the Seminoles have a quarterback slightly better than Daniels and a receiving corps in the same ballpark as LSU. LSU will face a stronger and more experienced defensive line than their own in Orlando but the Tigers should be able to pass on FSU, long and short, as well as run routes out of the backfield. The Seminoles linebacking crew is under talented and inexperienced and like the Tigers, their secondary is in a rebuilding mode.

PINK MUHLY GRASS THRIVES IN DRY CONDITIONS

Ornamental grasses are a division of perennial landscape plants commonly overlooked by the casual gardener. They add a wonderful contrast of texture in the landscape when used near plants with large, coarse leaves. The leaves move easily with the breeze, creating motion in the landscape. The sheer diversity in color, size, and shape provides the industry with many exciting selections. One of the best attributes regarding the use of ornamental grasses in the home landscape is their care and maintenance requirements. Relatively pest free, there isn’t much that will attack our ornamental pest plants and with their fibrous roots, they develop extensive root systems that can support the plant during times of environmental stress. Especially, as we enter the back half of this hot and dry summer.

One of these ornamental grass plants that can be seen all over St. Tammany parish and throughout South Louisiana is pink muhly grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris. Sometimes referred to as gulf muhly, pink muhly grass is native to North America with a region of origin from the United States of America down to Guatemala and the Caribbean. Within the U.S., it occurs in prairies, pine barrens, and open woodlands from Massachusetts to Kansas and then down to Texas and Florida. The genus is named after Gotthilf Muhlenberg, an American botanist from Pennsylvania. The species name, capillaris, is of Latin origin and is defined as “of or resembling hair”, which is vindicated after seeing the plant for the first time.

Being a member of Poaceae, the main grass plant family in plant taxonomy, pink muhly grass shares many of the same characteristics of other grasses. It is considered a warm-season grass, like our common lawn grasses, due to its growth output during the summer months. Being perennial, it lives year after year going through dormant periods during the winter months. The real gossip begins with its attractive foliage and smoke-like flowers during late summer and fall months. The leaves are dark green in color, glossy, wiry, and thread-like. The panicles, loose multi-branched flowers, are pink in color and develop in late summer through the fall. They make for great individual specimens, but they really shine when used in a mass planting off in the distance. The plants themselves can get up to 4 ft tall with a width of about 3 ft.

There are a few cultural recommendations to follow to have a successful planting of pink muhly grass in the landscape. Like other grasses, pink muhly grass is going to require a decent amount of light for the plant to thrive. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight throughout the day. The area should have decent drainage. Pink muhly grass can tolerate a moist soil. However, if water collects regularly after rain events, I might reconsider. Lastly, take soil samples to determine soil fertility and adjust in situations where plant nutrients are showing “very low” and “low” levels. Comply with these conditions and pink muhly grass will thrive in your landscape.

Whether in the ground or in a mixed container with other plants, pink muhly grass is an excellent choice for Louisiana gardeners. It’s such a good choice that the LSU AgCenter selected pink muhly grass to be a finalist in the Louisiana Super Plant Program back in 2021. The Louisiana Super Plant Program highlights exceptional plants that perform well throughout our beautiful state. This plant has been graciously received by gardeners and city planners alike. As you make errands throughout the day, stop and look at those clumps of grasses with the pink plumes starting to emerge. When you start to notice how common Pink Muhly Grass is with commercial plantings, you’ll start to understand how easy it is to grow.

FALL GARDENING

August’s heat is the indication that it’s time to plant the fall garden. Fall gardens can be planted with the same varieties as are used in the spring. The key to having a successful fall garden is maintaining sufficient water on the young plants. I recommend gardeners use drip irrigation systems and soaker hoses to keep the plants watered. The root zone of young plants extends 2 to 3 inches deep, and likely will require daily watering to keep moist in August. As the plants mature, water 1 inch weekly.

Early August is the time to plant tomatoes, peppers, squash, sweet corn, peas and beans. Plant things in the cabbage family from about August 20 to the middle of September. Cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are actually easier to grow in the fall because temperatures have moderated by the time they are ready to produce fruit. Before planting fall gardens, treat any weed problems that existed in the summer. Find a herbicide labeled for the crops that will be planted. For home gardens, I recommend the herbicide trifluralin, which is sold under such brand names as Treflan, Preen, and Trilin.

Insects are more of a problem in the fall than in the spring, so be vigilant. When you see them, control them by whatever method you deem appropriate. Wild animals become more of a problem with fall gardens as other plants tend to be drying up and going to seed. A well-watered garden of young plants offers a tempting meal. Electric fencing and protective netting can help keep the wild animals from eating your plants. Once established, fall gardens typically can grow and produce until the first frost, which in Mississippi ranges from October to December. Winter gardens, usually planted in different types of greens and English peas, can be planted when the fall garden is finished.

These sweltering temperatures have me staying inside a lot more than I am used to. I am really needing to get prepared for a painting convention that is quickly approaching. But, for now let me tell you about this project. I am thinking of cooler weather. And what better way to change the temperature from sweltering heat to cooler te[eratures? You got it Snowmen! This Snowman is ready to spread some cool temps with his Top hat decorated with holly leaves and a wooden button for a berry. I just adore the stenciled on snowflakes, swirls, and holy leaves. They were so much fun to do.What do you think about the heart shaped nose? It seems to be a little more interesting than the usual carrot nose. I know you cannot tell by the picture but there is a lot of glitter on this piece. I will have this design, a gingerbread man, and a penguin wearing a Top Hat. More to come very soon.

I got a late call for 3 guys that were going offshore but one of their motors blew forcing the trip to be canceled. I stopped what I was doing and took them out. They wanted bulls. We got there late but found some action. One guy had the presentation down and hooked up quickly.

He landed 3 of them while the other 2 watched and just kept getting sail cats.

Eventually one of them hooked up. As he was fighting his fish other ones were following the one on the hook looking for a scrap to be dropped so they could get in on the action. This enabled us to cast another bait near the one hooked and instantly get a double.

As the bite slowed we made a choice to go in looking for a few slots. It was tough but we did manage a few of them while going through a ton of lady fish.

During the quest for slots we found a large, over 5 feet, black tip shark that gave the customer a battle he never expected. After many trips around the boat  I was able to get close enough to cut the line and only loose the hook. Soon after that we hook up to another hard fighter. Thankfully it turned out to only be a big black drum. After a picture it went back.

After fighting bulls earlier and now looking for slots we were surprised to find this trophy 43 inch bull red in the shallows. Our biggest one when we were targeting them was only 38 inches. This was a good way to end our day. It was time for dinner. Life is Good!

Part 1 For the Fresh Corn Grits (1 quart)

1 sprig each of thyme & tarragon leaves, picked

1 qt white corn off the cob and blended

1 shallot, minced

2 cloves, garlic minced

4 oz mascarpone cheese

4 oz whole unsalted butter

2 oz extra virgin olive oil

Salt to taste after they’re cooked

Heat a 3-4 qt pot on medium heat and add the olive oil, shallots and garlic.

Stir just for a few seconds before adding in the corn puree’. Bring the corn to a simmer and stir frequently for 10 minutes over medium low heat.

Remove it from the heat and finish with butter, mascarpone and salt to taste. Keep warm until serving.

Part 2 For the Corn Froth (1 quart)

1 each onion, peeled carrot and celery stalk, large, diced

4 bay leaves

3 sprigs thyme

1 head garlic split

1 sprig tarragon

5 each white corn cobs

1 pinch cayenne pepper

1 cup milk (recipe continues to the right)

Add all of the ingredients except the milk and tarragon into the pot and cover with about one quart water. Bring it to a simmer and turn to low and simmer for 45 minutes covered. Strain and discard the vegetables. Add in the milk and cayenne and bring it back to a simmer. Season with salt, hold hot for the “plate up” dish to follow.

Part 3

For the Corn and Crawfish Saute’

2 tblsp extra virgin olive oil

2 cups of white corn kernals off cob

1 tblsp whole unsalted butter

1 shallot, minced

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 pint heirloom cherry tomatoes cut in half

1 lb crawfish tails, preferably leftovers picked from a crawfish boil

1 sprig tarragon leaves, picked and chopped

1 sprig thyme leaves picked

Minced chives to garnish

Heat a large saute’ pan on high heat and add in the olive oil. Add in the corn and a pinch of salt. Brown the corn lightly, then add in the butter, shallots and garlic and toss. Add in the rest of the ingredients and season with salt to taste.

Part 4

For the “Plate Up” 6 swordfish steaks, 6-8 oz portions Season the swordfish with salt and pepper. Cook the fish on a grill for about five minutes per side, turning a quarter turn halfway through each side. It’s good to serve swordfish a little closer to medium rare since it’s a good meaty, tender fish. Hold the fish aside, warm. Place a spoonful of the grits on the bottom of the bowl,then the swordfish on top. Place a few spoonfuls of the corn and crawfish over the fish. Bend the corn froth with a hand blender and place a few spoonfuls of the froth on top and around the fish.

2 each blue crabs, smashed

1/4th cup grated parmesan reggiano

5 drops Zatarain’s crab boil liquid

1 sprig tarragon leaves chopped

1 pinch chili flakes

2 sticks whole butter cold

1/4 lb crab claw meat, picked

1 cup panko breadcrumbs

1 stick butter

1 pinch saffron

1 teaspoon salt

Saute’ the crabs and saffron in the first stick of butter in a pot over medium heat until brown and toasted. Blend the crabs lightly in a blender and strain through a fine mesh sieve.

Place the other two sticks of butter in a stand up mixer and mix until smooth. Place the rest of the ingredients in the mixer and mix until smooth again. Place a dollop of the butter mixture on top of each oyster and broil until golden brown on top and serve immediately.

New Orleans Humane Law & Rescue Officers are the city’s first responders when it comes to animals. The Louisiana SPCA’s New Orleans Humane Law and Rescue partners with the City of New Orleans through a contract to provide the vital animal control services in the Orleans Parish. Our team is the only animal organization able to enforce the animal laws in Orleans Parish. For cases of animal abuse and neglect, we gather the information pertinent to the case and trust the courts to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

In the same way that you call 911 to get the New Orleans Fire Department out where there’s a fire, you call 911 when there’s an animal in distress or an animal emergency. What’s considered an animal emergency? If a weather event is called out by the National Weather Service like a Heat Advisory or a Hurricane and an animal is left outside unattended for long periods, you would need to report the situation to 911 as an animal emergency to dispatch our officers. Other examples are animals being a danger to the public, animals biting people, or if an animal in distress and in need of immediate assistance.

For non-emergencies, residents should call the non-emergency number, which is 504.821.2222. Although they’re still important, stray dog in your neighborhood or a cat stuck in a tree are examples of non-emergencies.

For an emergency call, officers respond within 30 minutes of being dispatched and up to 72 hours for non-emergencies. Officers respond to each call that they are dispatched to on a priority, but emergencies always come first, even if an officer is on the way to a non-emergency call.

Our Humane Law & Rescue team’s focus is to provide high quality, compassionate care for the animals we rescue and shelter, with a responsiveness to community needs; aligned with the funding allocated by the City each year. Right now, there are only 4 Humane Law & Rescue officers for the entirety of Orleans Parish, where fully staffed there would be 8.
