The man changes coordinators like most people change underwear. He’s so old school in personality that it’s unheard of for Saban to try and get down with his players and staff. But his Process….the mystery elixir of schemes, discipline, responsibility, study and confidence…..continues to keep the West Virginia native on top of the college football world, even though two of his former coaches have finally beaten him.

For several years, Saban dominated defenses with his Alabama squad having just enough offensive talent (student body right, student body left) to have winning and then incredible seasons beginning in 2009 with his first of six Alabama national championships. Saban had a series of quarterbacks who were labeled “game managers”, good but not great, steady but not spectacular. ‘Baja won more on defense than offense but the offense was getting better, thanks to Saban’s ability to recruit highly skilled wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. The latter produced two Heisman Trophy winners in Mark Ingraham and Derrick Henry, the last running backs to win a Heisman.

Then, things changed with the recruitment of quarterback Jaylen Hurt in 2016, following the career of Jake Coker, Saban’s fifth starting quarterback. Hurt, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones and Bryce Young were quarterbacks that could operate the openness of the run/pass option as well as four and five receiver sets. And all four could run, especially Hurt and Young. Six national championships since 2009, three with game managers, three with dual threat stars and a wide-open offensive mantra.

As 2023 arrived, Saban found himself in a situation he hasn’t had since his first year at Alabama. He has no bonafide star starting quarterback. He has two incoming recruits, not in the top three or four nationally which includes Eli Holstein, the Zachary, Louisiana star whom Saban plucked from under the nose from LSU, less than 20 miles south of Zachary, He also has Jaylen Milroe, Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson, Milroe a sophomore. Buchner a Notre Dame transfer and Simpson a redshirt freshman. This has to be the most ordinary collection of quarterbacks Saban has ever had on one of his rosters. He’s also hurting at tight end and the number of preseason All Americans is not only down significantly compared to the past seven years but also in their ability to dominate a position, something Saban’s players, especially on defense, have been highly successful at achieving.

Just don’t bet against Saban. Joe Burrow was no great deal when he transferred to LSU in 2018 and Burrow became the most decorated college football player of all time, winning a staggering 14 national and league awards, including the Heisman. He is also the first quarterback to garner every quarterback award given.

But LSU’s offense will be the best in the conference this year’s - even better than Georgia’s. And lest you forget, it was only a few years ago that Alabama played a road game in Athens early in the season against Georgia and humiliated them. Kirby Smart was the coach then; two consecutive national championships later, he’s still the coach and is favored, Alabama-like, to be the first college team to win three in a row. Alabama and LSU will have much to say about that as the Bulldogs have a cream puff schedule for more than the first half of the season before they play Tennessee. Their toughest game before then is at Auburn, not exactly a fear-inducing matchup.

Enjoy a “rebuilding” year for Saban while you can. His team is picked ahead of LSU in the national polls, but more on reputation and LSU’s vulnerability in the secondary, a fall from superiority from “DBU” that began after 2019 for the Tigers. Watch and wait. This won’t be Georgia’s year either; they’ve lost a lot of talent, especially on defense, and the national title could leave the SEC if Michigan or USC or even the star-jinked Ohio State Buckeyes finally put it all together with the consistent power football shown by Alabama, Georgia and LSU for the past four years. CHAMBERBITTER IS TAKING OVER THE WORLD

Extension offices across the entire state have been receiving phone calls about a troublesome weed that looks like a little mimosa tree. These abundant, fast-growing, and weedy plants seem to be taking over the world one landscape at a time. Whether you call it leafflower, niruri, chamberbitter, or gripeweed, this prolific landscape pest has been tormenting gardeners for years. If you aren’t familiar with it, continue reading to learn more. Chamberbitter, or Phyllanthus urinaria, is a warm-season annual plant, meaning that it goes through its whole life cycle within a calendar year. It germinates later in the year than most of the common warm-season weeds that gardeners manage on regular basis. The leaves of the plant resemble a young mimosa seedling. However, mimosa trees have compound leaves whereas the leaves of chamberbitter are simple but appear to be compound at first glance. The leaves in general are oblong and lanceolate in shape and ranging between ¼ to 1 inch in length as they emerge alternately down the stem. The root system is considered fibrous but displays a well-developed taproot. The fruit is termed a capsule and contains six seeds. These seed capsules appear on the underside of each branchlet (female flowers) and are a common identifying feature.

Control of chamberbitter weeds is not an easy task. Especially, if nothing has been done in recent years. The main reason being that chamberbitter plants produce an epic number of viable seeds in a short time. When allowed to grow, flower, and seed in a landscape setting, seed accumulation helps to keep a steady crop of plants for at least three years and possibly longer. Preventing seed production is an effective management step for dealing with any problematic weed, but more so with chamberbitter.

For managing chamberbitter in a lawn setting, start by addressing soil fertility issues. Take and submit soil samples to determine current level of soil fertility. Address nutrient gaps using the results and apply the appropriate soil amendment while refraining from adding nutrients that are abundant in the soil. It is also important to supply irrigation during extended periods of drought. Mow the lawn often enough so that about 1/3 of the grass plant is removed with each mowing event. Review mowing height information for your grass species and adjust the mower deck so that the cutting height falls in line with the given ranges. Following these steps will help ensure a vigorous lawn to compete with any weeds growing within it.

Its similar in flower bed situations as well. Maintain healthy vigorous landscape plants that will shade the soil below. Combine that technique with an effective mulching program and you can keep most chamberbitter plants away.

Chemical controls for chamberbitter are available but an integrated approach with respect to combining several control methods together in an overall management plan will yield the best results. With chamberbitter being an annual plant, a pre-emergent herbicide applied prior to the onset of the warm season is recommended. Pre-emergent herbicides are generally recommended to be applied in home lawns during the month of February, especially when going after crabgrass. Aim to make a second application of preemergent herbicide 2-3 months after the first because chamberbitter requires warmer soil to germinate. Atrazine is a common home lawn herbicide with both pre- and post-emergent qualities and can help prevent some seedling growth.

For flowerbeds look for the active ingredient, isoxaben, for decent control. Fertilome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery and Snapshot 2.5TG contain this active ingredient and can be applied at a similar time. An over-the-top application of atrazine over a centipedegrass or St Augustinegrass during mid to late spring can also work as a post-emergent treatment to kill young chamberbitter seedlings that made it through the pre-emergent herbicide barrier.

Atrazine is one of the better post-emergent herbicide options, but both three and four-way lawn herbicides have their place. Products that contain 2,4-D, mecoprop, and dicamba are termed threeway herbicides because they contain three different active ingredients. Look for trade names like BioAdvanced Southern Weed Killer for Lawns, Bonide Weed Beater Lawn Weed Killer, Gordon’s Trimec Lawn Weed Killer, and Ortho Weed B Gon Weed Killer for Lawns when searching for a three-way herbicide. As with many of my lawn weed recommendations, Fertilome Weed Free Zone is a common recommendation. The reason being is that it is a four-way herbicide which contains the above three active ingredients along with the addition of carfentrazone, making it a game changer.

Lastly, is hand removal. In smaller growing areas this is my preferred method of control because even though it might take more time and energy to perform, the gentle tug and release generated by the slight resistance of that well-developed tap root makes for an oddly satisfying experience! Call me crazy but this weed pulls up quite easily and you get most of the root system every time. Combine these different strategies and you can keep chamberbitter populations low and undetectable. Now if we only get our neighbors to do the same thing…

Well, the last time I wrote to you we were celebrating another national championship, (3 if you include the Jello Shot Title), for LSU. Since then, the Bayou Bengals have continued to dominate the national spotlight with the MLB draft, the ESPY’s and PreSeason SEC News with Media Days, All Conference teams, etc.

Speaking of the Major League Baseball Draft, what a banner day it was and an even bigger day financially. The Pirates owned the No. 1 pick in the 2023 MLB draft, using their selection to take superstar LSU pitcher Paul Skenes. Skenes and the Pirates reportedly agreed to a deal with a signing bonus worth $9.2 million, the largest MLB draft bonus ever doled out to a player. Skenes’s $9.2 million deal shatters the previous record held by Tigers former No. 1 pick Spencer Torkelson, who received a bonus of $8.416 million in 2020.

Days after the Pirates signed Skenes to his first contract, the Nationals locked in his Tigers teammate. Washington agreed to a deal with No. 2 pick Dylan Crews, shutting down any concern that the outfielder’s asking price would be too high and securing what the franchise hopes will be a centerpiece of its future. The Nationals gave Crews a signing bonus of about $9 million, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. That’s just a touch above the slot value of $8,988,500 for the No. 2 pick. It’s still a nice payday for Crews, as his signing bonus is the second largest in MLB Draft history. $9 million is second to only Skenes, who signed 5 days earlier.

Oh and not to mention, my Cincinnati Reds did pretty well in the draft as well! Not only did they get Wake Forest right-handed pitcher Rhett Lowder with the seventh pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. But, they also added a bayou touch by adding Ty Floyd. Lowder, 21, went a perfect 15-0 during the 2023 season, while making 19 appearances. The righty held a 1.87 earned run average over 120.1 innings, only sacrificing 25 earned runs. To add to that, the righty fanned 143 batters and only sacrificed 24 walks. The ACC Pitcher of the Year was slotted as the sixth-best player in the draft, according to MLB Pipeline’s rankings, and spent time with the U.S. Collegiate National Team during his time as a Demon Deacon. That pretty much wraps up the amazing baseball season. Now, turning to a highly anticipated 2nd Season of Brian Kelly. If the pressure was not on before to follow a great 1st season but with coaches Kim Mulkey and Jay Johnson both winning a national title in only their 2nd season all eyes are beaming on Kelly.

LSU took center stage on the 1st day of SEC Media Days and Brian Kelly’s group stole the show. Kelly brought Jayden Daniels, Josh Williams and Mekhi Wingo to Nashville with him. A key talking point was Daniels’ growth as he prepares for his second season in Baton Rouge, LSU closing the gap on Georgia and more.

Kelly discussed the improvement of Daniels, how this coaching staff began to understand him as a football player and where he must develop during the 2023 season:

“I think that [the coaching staff] was all a part of our learning curve with him. We knew [Daniels] as a person, but we really didn’t know much as a football player and how he would respond to a new system of offense where he had to make a 180 in terms of what he was asked to do. So, what does development look like for him? I think it would be the natural progression from the last game in which he played where he was aggressive, but he was under control. He ran the ball when he needed to but stepped up in the pocket and made the tight window throws.

I think that was the progression from what we saw in the first week where he would step up in the pocket and run or not make those tight-window throws. I think that’s what we saw during the year was his natural progression of understanding the offense and being more confident. We want to see that in year two.”

Kelly also discussed that the team is closing the gap on Georgia & Alabama. While a key to that success would not only be the quarterback position but the improved play of his defensive backfield:

“Based upon how we’ve recruited and how we’ll continue to recruit, we’ll have a football roster that will be able to compete against Georgia ... and then it’s just a matter of getting it done on the field. When you have to dip into the transfer portal at one position, that’s a concern,” Kelly said on Monday. “Because you don’t know what you have... We are a team that needs to get off the field on 3rd down. That’s something we weren’t very good at last year. That starts with that group”

Teams converted 39% of third downs against LSU last year, which ranked 74th in the country. Moving forward, Kelly understands that Fall Camp will be where this program hits its stride and understands rotations.

Speaking of understanding rotations, the media obviously agrees that this Tiger Team will be pretty solid by voting them just behind Georgia and Bama while have 11 players on Pre-Season SEC Rosters. The most surprising pick was LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels being named on the 1st Team.

Daniels, who guided the Tigers to a 10-4 mark and the SEC Western Division title in his first year with the program, is joined on the first-team offense by junior wide receiver Malik Nabers and sophomore offensive tackle Will Campbell. Tight end Mason Taylor earned a spot on the second-team, while offensive tackle Emery Jones was named third-team. Taylor and Jones are both entering their second year with the Tigers.

Daniels enters his final season at LSU coming off one of the best years for a quarterback in school history as he set program records for rushing yards (885) and touchdowns (11) for a for a player at his position. He was also one of only two quarterbacks nationally to rush for 800 yards and pass for 2,500 yards. His 3,7978 yards of total offense ranks No. 2 in school history, trailing only Heisman Trophy quarterback Joe Burrow.

Defensively, a trio of Tigers were named to the first-team led by sophomore linebacker Harold Perkins. He was joined by defensive linemen Mekhi Wingo and Maason Smith. Defensive back Major Burns was named to the third-team.

LSU also had a pair of specialists recognized as long snapper Slade Roy and kickoff specialists Nathan Dibert were both second-team selections.

A year ago, we were wondering about all the coaching changes and how long would it take for the LSU Athletic Department to get on solid footing. Fast forward 12 months and there is not another university in the country that has more national notoriety or buzz about them than the LSU Tigers. It is definitely a great time to be a Tiger fan and an even better time to be an LSU Alum.

Are you jumping for joy because you finally got some rain? I sure am!

We had two really hard rain showers Sunday, one in the morning and the other in the early afternoon. The first one cut my grass cutting time but that is alright. I was cutting the grass in the rain until it started to lightning. Figured that would be a wrap! But there are always things to do around the house. I do Not like housework. I would so much rather be outside working but was not to be. I do like crafting infact I love painting! So after a quick trip to the store (after the first rain storm) I decided to put everything else on the back burner.

I had been working on a “Christmas in July” piece but I had just gotten the newest Tea Cup pattern from Tracy Moreau. I was really anxious to get this one painted and have two in my set! This one is the pansey and as you can see it is not finished yet. I was hoping to get it done before I shared it with yall. But, life happens and the completion of this did not. I really like these TeaCup Sill Sitters and can hardly wait until Tracy releases the other one she is designing. This one shouldn’t take too very long to finish. I still have to finish the butterfly, do the line work on the Teacup and add a little more highlighting and shading . I figure another 2 hours or so. We shall see.....And I really do want to finish the Winter piece I am working on. It is so cute and it’s another stand alone piece! I will have some of these pieces available at AOL’s Craft Show in November.

If you missed the Empire South Pass Tarpon Rodeo this year put it down for next year. This is one great family Rodeo. There were many children going home with something to be proud of and making permanent memories.

One of the boats that was able to make it  offshore in the weather  we had was able to pick up first place mahi-mahi, and second and third place blackfin tuna. Congratulations Captain and crew.

Speaking of offshore---the red grouper record was broken twice this week. It was 13 something but was  broken by a 17 plus pounder and the very next day was broken again.

This 21.4 pounder is now the new state record red grouper.  From what I can see there is a lot of action going to happen with this fish and the state record. The cougar has been running out of delta marina on weekends. Here is a nice cobia that came in on one of their recent trips

The bull red fishing out of Venice is heating up. It is  time to come down here and have your arms ripped off by one of these fighting monsters. Most of the weekends are booked but there are still a few dates available.

Hurry up and take the picture. I want to hook up another one before he lands the one he is fighting. YES the action is that hot right now. Co.e get you some!

Not all redfish have spots. It is rare but not uncommon for someone to catch a redfish without spots. Richard Young landed this on Sunday. It went back for someone else to enjoy.  No spots on either side.

This was the last week for charter permit holders to catch red snapper.  With the permit they could get red snapper every day for 44 straight days while we were only allowed weekends. Their season has ended but ours recreational (weekends only) is still open. On good days our inshore boats can put you on some good red snapper.

Hey, ya”ll! First of all I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Tara Collier, from North Louisiana. Native to South Louisiana for eight years now. Wife, mother of two beauty boys and owner of Camellia Produce. I’d like to take these monthly issues to talk about our local fruits and veggies, and some fun things in between! Whether you’ve got that Creole “thing”, or that country swing, one thing we all have in common is our passion for cuisine. This month our featured vegetable will be cucuzza, which is available in this area from June until first frost - about early November. You may know at as gagootz or zuccini but cucuzza is an Italian squash that originated in Italy. A staple in many of our local Italian’s menus for generations. Cucuzza is long and firm that can grow up tp three feet, with light green skin and white flesh. The cucuzza squash offers a slightly sweet mild flavor and a fairly firm inviting texture. Cucuzza contains no fat or sodium, and is high in vitamin C and fiber. A three and one-half ounce serving has about 25 calories. You wanna know how to make a delicious soup dish using this very versatile veggie?

Well, let’s do it! First we’ll start with sauteeing onion, garlic and celery, about a 1/2 cup each. If you’d like more, go ahead! It will only make this soup more devourable! Then I take 2 quarts of my canned Creoles and pour em’ in! You can use store bought, but make sure to buy two or three of 32 oz cans of whole or cut tomatoes.Get the heat rolling to a mild boil, throw in a bay leave or three, give it a few dashes of thyme and oregano and let it go, for about 30 minutes or so with a lid, while you get to cutting.

Take about about a half pound or so of smoked linked sausage and cut into thin, 1/2” slices. Once done, throw it in!! Or substitute a like amount of shrimp, but make sure you add it AFTER the cucuzza is soft (see below). Oh my, me....can you smell that!?! I bet your neighbors are going to want to join you for dinner. Lastly, the piece’ de resistance: the famed cucuzza. Cut this baby into thirds. Split each third down the middle, which will make it easier for you to see where to peel the skin. Do so, peel off the light green skin and cut the leftover flesh into 1” to 2” pieces. There will be seeds as well, most are soft enough to not have to worry over. But you can take them out if you so choose. Last step: Toss them in with your heavenly aromatic base. Continue to cook on medium heat until your cucuzza becomes translucsent and tender - about 35 to 45 minutes. You can eat this as a delicious soup by throwing in a handful of crushed angel hair or enjoy over rice or pasta. I hope you, like my family and friends, enjoy this Italian tradition as much as my family. Ciao!

Many doctors are now suggesting a diet high in fiber to help reduce cholesterol, balance blood sugar levels and lose weight. Fiber supports intestinal health as well as curbing a person’s appetite by creatinga feeling of “fullness” which makes it a great option to consume in between meals to avoid overeating. However, there are many forms of fiber available, so which one is the best?

Psyllium Husk is an excellent source of soluable fiber, supports cardiovascular health and helps maintain regularity. Psyllium is a true dietary fiber, even though it is classified by some as a laxative or muciliginous fiber and is a convenient way to increase intake of diety fiber because of its high mucilage content. This bulking agent swells considerably when added to liquid which can help to support healthy gastro-intestinal transit time. This bulking action and healthy transit time can play an important role in maintaining healthy gastrointestinal function.

PolyGlycopleX, also referred to as “PGX”, is glucomannan fiber from konjac root. Glucomannan has been shown in studies to maintain healthy cholesteral levels, support regularity and promote a feeling of fullness. Glucomannan is a soluable, bulk-forming fiber derived from the konjac root. Glucomannan can provide temporary relief of constipation and may help to maintan serum lipid levels already within the healthy range. In addition, because glucomannan helps to promote satiety (the feeling of fullness), it can be an effective addition as a weight management program that includes a healthy, low calorie, low glycemic diet and exercise program.

White chia seeds, which have been widely publicized in the news and on popular TV shows such as Dr. Oz, are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Two-thirds of chia seeds are comprised of omega-3; however, they are also an excellent source of omega-6 vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, dietary fiber and protein. Chia seeds can be eaten on their own or added to salads, cereals, yogurts and proteinshakes to boost their nutritional content. Chia seeds are inexpensive and easily found in vitamin and health food stores.

With a large percentage of the population being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and at risk for cardiovascular disease, fiber makes a strong case as a preventative measure to reduce the liklehood of developing these conditions. If losing weight and increasing overall health is the goal, fiber is a must-add to any diet or exercise routine. Remember to drink plenty of water, up to a gallon a day, when consuming a diet high in fiber, to ensure regularity and reduce cravings in between meals.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. Betsy was trying her best to fit in with a group of feral cats that gathered each day to be fed by dedicated volunteers. Theyspotted her right away, a beautiful, large tortie with white paws and white on her chest. Her tortoise shell markings were so unusual it was impossible for her to blend in with the group. The volunteers were sure she was someone’s lost pet. Betsy had been someone’s pet, but her owner did not respond when they were contacted by the microchip company. Betsy had become one of the many homeless cats that live on the street. However, because of the work of rescue volunteers, Betsy now has a new home with a person who will never abandon her. There are so many wonderful cats like Betsy that need a home Cobtact START to meet some of our fabulous feline rescues.
