Darn! I really had a great article about the stubborness of Joe Biden staying in the race for re-election and now he’s gone and shredded it all to hell.
Hell is what the Democrats now face. Without the endorsement of Barack Obama for a successor to Biden and the fingernails-on-the-blackboard Kamala Harris as a possible sitting President this fall, the factions of the Democrats need to change the name of their party from Democrats to Demolishers.
The age and obvious cognitive condition of Biden finally shut Jill Biden and others up and Ol’ Joe did the right thing. But what will the party of the working man….er, no more….the policy wonks…..do, in the short run?
In 1968, a parallel event happened. President Lyndon Johnson announced on television one sunny summer day that he would not seek re-election. Vietnam had defeated him and could not overcome the good that came from the Civil Rights Act of 1965. The Democrats chose a man from Minnesota with all the charisma of an uptight Porky Pig with Hubert Horatio Humphrey, who had no concept of the greater American landscape. To prove it, a retooled Richard Nixon, no policy whiz himself, rolled into the White House in November. And although Nixon’s foreign policies were strong, his domestic offerings sucked and his need to remain in power during his second term in 1972 produced the embarrassment of Watergate and ultimately Nixon’s demise on the national scene.
No such scenario is available to the Democrats in 2024. 56 years after their last Chicago convention, there really isn’t a nationally recognized safe candidate as they viewed Humphrey in 1968. If the Democrats force Biden’s hand to step down and not resign before his term is up, they really have a bunch of Double A and Triple A options in their national bullpen. At least one of them has to be like Paul Skenes of Pittsburgh and step up to the big leagues with a show of confidence. The Democrats cannot coalesce behind Kamala Harris because she is a candidate of political need, not leadership. Her grating verbalization and cackling laugh will make her the laughingstock of a nation needing a leader, not a comedian. And the nation is willing to overlook Trump’s feet of clay and return him to power for the good that his administration produced from 2017 to 2020.
So now one of the national stink bombs has dropped out. Trump has his Vice-Presidential bulldog in J.D. Vance, who checks all the diversity boxes as a white boy. A Vance-Harris Vice-Presidential debate would not serve the Democrats well as Harris carries both the verbal acumen and border and inflation policy failures of the elderly Biden. And as long as the bullet missed Trump in Pennsylvania, he will dodge a bullet in November if he learns to shut up after about 25 minutes, when the childish and bullying Trump emerges in his speeches longer than that.
Both the Dems and the Republicans have a four-year bridge to gap until 2028, when both parties hopefully will produce better presidential candidates. Meanwhile, if Biden stays in (or even if he doesn’t), Chicago will be a remake of the drama and angst this country experienced at the height of the Vietnam War. Memorialized by the savage Chicago police department’s handling of war protesters and the heavy-handed policies of then Mayor Richard Daley, the dictator of the Windy City for years, most of us in our twilight remember the Graham Nash-written ode that summarized the changes in America back then. Beginning with a rhythmic organ opening, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young sang, “Won’t You Please Come to Chicago”, a plea to help change the policies of our leaders and to expose a very non-youthful political body in every way to what many of us were thinking then.
I can’t sing that particular song well, but I love to change the lyrics to songs to send a message. With apologies to CS&N, here is my shortened version of their societychanging song from the summer of ’68:
“Though his age has finally tripped him and his time is finally up, Won’t you please come to Chicago, see the mess, Democrats are at a crossroads and the summer’s almost gone Won’t you please come to Chicago and encourage someone else.
We can cha-ange, the party, not de-ra-ange the party

SHRIMP PLANT
Justicia brandegeena
There are a lot of cool and interesting plants in the world, and the shrimp plant is definitely one of those plants. Anything that includes shrimp is verry fitting for not only South Louisiana but the entire Gulf Coast. I first learned about shrimp plants when sitting through a presentation on flowering houseplants. That may be how folks in folks in colder climates experience them, but in warmer areas like USDA Hardiness Zone 8b and higher, you start to see them being used outside in the landscape and in mixed containers.
The shrimp plant, Justicia brandegeeana, is a bushy, soft evergreen shrub in the Acanthaceae plant family. You may be familiar with other plants in this family like Mexican pentunia (Ruellia simplex), blue skyflower (Thunbergia grandiflora), or firecracker flower (Corssandra infundibuliformis). Most of the species described in Acanthaceae originated in areas near the equator such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Africa, Brazil, and Central America. This explains why most of the United States use members of this family in protected environment situations and outside during the arm months. Shrimp plant, or also known as false hop, shrimp bush, and Mexican shrimp plant, produces very characteristic flowers. The flower spikes are 4-5 inches long, occur on terminal stems and closely resemble a hop flower. Some of the color produced by shrimp plants come from colorful bracts, or modified leaves associated with reproductive structures or flowers. In shrimp plants, bracts can be red, pink, and yellow, with salmon-pink being the most common. Slender two-lipped flowers emerge from axils between bracts. Purple or red spots can be found on the lower lip of the flower. Stepping back, you can easily see how the salmon-pink bracts and shape of the flower resemble our beloved crustacean, the shrimp.
Shrimp plants can range in size anywhere between 1-3 feet tall and wide depending on environment. When used indoors they can grow larger, but when used outdoors the cooler temperatures during winter will keep it in check. Avoid northern and western exposures when selecting an outside location for a shrimp plant. Also, consider microclimates like the canopy of mature trees or the southern side of a large structure, as they can help protect shrimp plants during cool weather. Some gardeners use shrimp plants as annuals by planting them in late spring and allowing them to thrive during warm season months. They will switch them out for a cool season option later in the year. When used in a mixed container, shrimp plant can be used as a filler plant, or maybe even a thriller due to its showy flowers. Provide at least one square foot of space so that it can compete with the other species used in the planting.
Shrimp plants prefer a part sun/shade light environment for optimum growth and development. Areas that receive morning light and then shade from the afternoon sun are ideal. They also prefer moist soils, high in organic matter. Growing sites can be slightly modified to help ensure success while experimenting with shrimp plants. For the ultimate South Louisiana conversation plant, find a shrimp plant and add it to your plant collection. And, if you can’t find them outside at the nursery, don’t forget to check the houseplant section!

Hi, Everyone!
Hope things have been going well for you and you have been surviving all this rainy weather and unbearable heat. The only break is the rain makes it a little cooler, but then the grass grows so fast. With me being laid up for another few weeks I had to get the assistance of a lawn care company. I like cutting the grass but that’s a no go for now. So it is time to bite the bullet, listen to the doctor and heal. I did manage to get a little painting done. Believe me, it felt like this very simple piece that should have taken at most 2 hours, took FOREVER! Which it DID! Just couldn’t sit and work on it for more than 20 minutes at a time, sometimes less.
By Paula Johnson
I painted this little Scarecrow on a 6 inch round board which I had in my stash. This wood can be purchased at Hobby Lobby and I am sure Michaels should have them also. I base coated the wood Bleached Sand, stenciled the plaid design with Indian Turquoise, but you can choose any colors you want to. Make him your own by adding the colors you like most in Fall. Change the wording at the top, do whatever makes you happy. I am so ready for Fall!
Well. that’s it for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. Hope it doesn’t take Forever. I know it will be fun.

Well, football season is almost here and everyone else is doing there Pre-Season rankings list. I figured I would do one myself. So, here is my rankings list for this year’s SEC teams:
1) GEORGIA
In my book, you are still the king until someone knocks you off your throne! Even though, I do not think that the Bulldogs will be here at the end of the year, they will be here until someone removes them from this spot.
2) ALABAMA
Again, the same remarks from my statement above. In my opinion, there is no way that the Tide will be this high. I look for them to take a huge step back this season and in the near future as their King is no longer on the sidelines. Sure, he might have an office not too far away, but he is not controlling the team and that is the biggest loss they will ever have.
3) LSU
I figure that most of you will think I am wearing my purple-colored glasses on this one but, there are major reasons for this decision. They have a quarterback that is a better passer than the Heisman trophy winner from a year ago and a revamped Defense that despite a lack of athleticism in the defensive backfield will obviously be more improved.
4) OLE MISS
On paper, the Rebels are loaded both offensively and defensively. But, at the end of the day, they are still the Ole Miss Black Bears which means at some point they will poop in the bed when they are not supposed to. The expectations will end up being too great for them though they should make the playoff.
5) TENNESSEE
The Volunteers are a team that could end up anywhere from 5th to 10th depending on what kind of offense they end up with. This team is a bit of a mystery but trending in the right direction.
6) MISSOURI
These Tigers return a ton on offense but obviously lost a ton when Coach Baker went to LSU. They are bound to score points but not sure if they will be able to keep anyone off the scoreboard.
7) TEXAS
CROSBY’S HEATING & AIR
Locally owned and operated. New installs, repairs, regular maintenance, quick service, with unbeatable low pricing. Call to schedule. 228-669-9199
WANTED COIN COLLECTIONS: Will pay cash for coins. Indian head and wheat pennies, buffalo nickels, mercury dimes, quarters, half-dollars and silver dollars. Please call 228218-2563.
Sure, they have talent but this is not the Big XII and they have to earn their stripes before being put anywhere in the Top 5. This is a league that actually plays defense and every week is a battle and I am unsure that the Longhorns can handle that kind of pressure week in and week out.
8) KENTUCKY
The Wildcats will always win under Stoops but not sure if they have enough to actually get over the hump to make another major bowl game. However, they will remain a step above the lower teams in the conference.
9) OKLAHOMA
Lately every year, we would hear about how good the Sooners would be and every year they would disappoint their faithful fan base. Add to that, that they are in a much better conference and things are definitely not trending in their favor.
10) TEXAS A&M
No more Jimbo Fisher, who could get them to put up some good offensive numbers. Now, they are in a total rebuild and have just enough talent to not be in the bottom 6 of the conference.
11) AUBURN
Too many things are going on in The Plains for Hugh Freeze to deal with. Though they have some good recruits coming in, this team is destined to stay in the bottom portion for this year.
12) MISSISSIPPI STATE
Jeff Lebby comes in and could surprise some people with his innovative offense. The only problem is can they stop anyone from scoring themselves. Another team with a question mark.
13) SOUTH CAROLINA
Spencer Rattler is now a Saint, so there is not much star power going on for the Gamecocks. A bowl game appearance would be a big win for this team and is not out of the question.

TRUCKLOAD OF Quilting supplies & materials, knitting, crochet, etc. New materias. Asking $200. Call 985-893-2512 Covington.
14) FLORIDA
The only reason this team is not at the bottom is because of how bad the 2 teams below them are. This will not end well for Billy Napier. Well, that is unless he goes to the bank to deposit his buy-out which will certainly get paid to him before the season is over. As, there is NO WAY he escapes this year without getting fired especially with that tough as nails schedule.
15) VANDERBILT
Well, it is Vandy so what else is there to say besides that. The Commodores will only rank high in this conference during the fall when it comes to the All-Academic SEC Team. Just not enough talent nor enough financial backing to get this team on the winning end of things.
16) ARKANSAS
This looks like the Razorback version of Coach Orgeron except for the fact that they have fallen way short of any type of championship hardware. This year will only be worse as every week now Pittman has to look over his should to make sure Bobby Petrino is not packing up his own office to move into the Big Pigs Office.
There you have it folks! My personal guesses on how these teams rank currently and how they might end up at the conclusion of the season. One thing we all can agree upon is that we CAN NOT wait until the season gets here. Unless of course if you have a gaming system and already are playing EA’s College Football 25!

LAWN IRRIGATION
As we approach the typically hot, dry portion of our growing season, barring any tropical systems, homeowners usually ask about how much and how long to water their lawn. There are too many variables to give a solid answer to this question.
You will need to do some experimenting and testing with your sprinkler/irrigation system to determine what is needed for your lawn.
It is recommended that your lawn gets 1- 1.5 inch of water per week through irrigation or natural rainfall. A way to tell how much your sprinklers are putting out is to use the tuna can technique. A tuna/ wet cat food can is typically around one inch deep. Place empty tuna/wet cat food cans at various spots around your yard within the range of your sprinklers. Turn on the sprinkler/ irrigation system and allow it to run for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, measure the amount of water collected in each can. If the cans collected an inch of water, then you know you need to water for 30 minutes. If the cans collected more or less than this amount, then calculate approximately how long you need to water your landscape so that it receives the recommended one inch of water in each watering session. If there is runoff before water application reaches the one inch, more waterings per week may be needed. This is especially true on clay soils, sloped terrain, or compacted soils. You might be able to only apply ½ inch per watering, so you would need to do this twice per week.
On lawns with compacted soils, core aeration would be highly recommended to help increase the rate at which the soil absorbs water. The best time to irrigate is early in the day, preferably before sunrise. This helps minimize evaporation loss and limits the time the lawn is wet, which reduces the potential for disease. Remember that deep watering promotes deeper root growth and produces healthy, durable turf.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
At only 3-4 weeks these babies need their mother to feed them. Unfortunately, their mother cannot be found. This is unfortunate not only because a kitten’s mother usually does a better job than a volunteer bottle feeder can do, but also because bottle feeders are few and far between. Feeding little kittens is rewarding, but also demanding, work. START needs volunteers to foster kittens as well as care for little ones like these. Please email START if you are able to help. Food and supplies will be provided.
PUMPKINS FOR FALL
Pumpkins are a warm season vining crop that belong to the gourd family. Pumpkins come in an assort-ment of shapes, sizes, textures, and colors. For example, there are orange, red, yellow, white, blue, and even multicolored pumpkin varieties.
For Halloween pumpkins, seeds should be planted between late June and mid-July, depending on the variety. Build rows 4-8 feet apart and space each hill 2-5 feet apart within the row. You can either start seeds in a container or seed directly into the garden soil. If beginning in a container, allow the seeds to grow until there are three “true” leaves, thin to one healthy seedling, then plant one seedling per hill. If plant-ing directly into the garden soil, plant the seeds 1-1.5 inch deep at a rate of two to three seeds per hill. After the seedlings have grown for 2 weeks, select the best seedling per hill then remove any others. Plants from seeds sown directly into the soil may have less uniform production compared to seeds that began in containers.
Pumpkins grow best in well-drained soil that has a pH be-tween 6.0 and 6.8. Have your soil tested to determine the fertility needs for your particular growing area. When applying fertilizer, make sure to avoid contact with the leaves as this can result in leaf burning. Utilizing black plastic mulch is beneficial to help control weeds, reduce fruit rot, and conserve moisture and fertilizer. Keep in mind that if using black plastic mulch, it needs to be placed over the rows before plant-ing occurs. Alternatively, you can use bark products, pine straw, or hay.
Providing adequate water throughout the growing season is important for pumpkin production. One inch of water per week is recommended early in the season, while up to 2 inches of water per week may be needed during the last 30 days before harvest.
Pre-emergence herbicides kill germinating weed seeds and are effective at controlling annual weeds. Pre-emergence herbicides are applied to a clean plant bed immediately after planting. Sethoxydim for grasses, halosulfuron for nutsedge, or shielded sprays of glyphosate can be used as a post-emergent on actively grow-ing weeds.
Squash vine borers, squash bugs, cucumber beetles, and spi-der mites are insects that commonly affect pumpkins. A regular, scheduled spray program combined with an IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach is the best means for control. This approach includes regular scouting, knowing pest threshold limits, and spray-ing when necessary with labeled insecticides. Permethrin and bifen-thrin are the most effective insecticides, followed by spinosad, mala-thion, and carbaryl.
The most common pumpkin diseases are powdery mildew and downy mildew. Downy mildew attacks when temperatures drop into the 50s and moisture is present for 6 to 12 hours, while powdery mildew does not require moisture to establish. Selecting resistant varieties and an IPM approach are the most effective methods for control. Use chlorothalonil, mancozeb, or copper sulfate for these diseases, making sure to get complete leaf coverage. Make sure to read and follow all pesticide label instructions. The label is the law.

UNLEASH YOUR HEART GIVING DAY
The Louisiana SPCA’s third annual Unleash Your Heart Giving Day is coming up on July 23! This is a unique day for our organization to raise critical funds to help thousands of animals through adoption, foster, disaster response, Community Clinic, and pet-family support.
Thanks to our underwriting sponsors, every dollar given will go straight to the animals. Your gift will go directly to caring for animals in our shelter, finding forever homes, providing affordable veterinary care, and more!
With donor support we’ve been able to help over 1,000 animals get adopted so far this year. Our food pantry at both the Plaquemines and New Orleans locations are also able to help struggling pet parents by providing pet food, litter, and other pet-related necessities. Not only does your gift support our efforts to aid the animals in our care but you will also support our efforts to help a pet family stay together!
The support from our community is so important. Many don’t realize that the Louisiana SPCA is not a part of any other SPCA or humane society and relies on local donations.
If you are looking to get more involved with the mission of the Louisiana SPCA there are tons of opportunities. You can volunteer by signing up for volunteer orientation or open your heart and home to a pet in need of some time away from the shelter by joining our foster program! You can give now through July 23. Visit louisianaspca.org to give today!
SQUASH VINE BORER
Mississippi, like most states, has a wide range of climactic conditions. We have long, hot summers, but winters are relatively mild most years. Prevailing southerly winds much of the year bring warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico across the state often resulting in thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes depend-ing on the time of year. Regardless of your location, with these thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes come high winds and flooding from torrential rains including storm surges along the Coastal areas. Moreso in Northern and Central Mississippi than Southern Mississippi, there are occasional ice storms in winter.
While native vegetation has adapted to a wide variety of environmental conditions, some species are better able to survive storm events than others. It makes sense to choose tree species for the landscape that can withstand these natural events. Storm-resistant trees will make your property safer and reduce future tree maintenance costs. Very few tree species are resistant to all these storm conditions, so prioritize those that are most likely to impact your landscape.
Tree species vary in their tolerance to ice accumulation. Those species most resistant to breakage from ice generally have strong branch attachment, flexible branches, low branch surface area, and straight trunks. Ice-tolerant species having one or more of these characteristics include bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), black walnut (Juglans nigra), sweetgum (Liquidamber styraciflua), white oak (Quercus alba), and eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana).
Tree species vary widely in their ability to tolerate high winds, and the ability of any individual tree to survive wind will also depend on its health. How-ever, there are some characteristics that enable trees to adapt to high wind and in-crease their chance for survival such as high wood density and defoliation. These include live oak (Quercus virginiana), flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica), sweet-bay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana), and crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica).
Tree species have varying tolerance to flooding. Tree roots need oxygen, and most tree species will not tolerate flooding during the growing season. Mature, vigorously growing trees of tolerant species are best able to withstand flooding. Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), sweetgum (Liquidamber styraciflua), and common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) are examples of a flood-tolerant trees. It is a relatively slow-growing tree commonly found on wet sites near flowing streams or rivers. This deciduous conifer’s needles drop in the autumn.
The sodium in salt spray or seawater can have detrimental effects on trees, including damaged or disfigured foliage, reduced growth, or even death. The American holly (Ilex opaca), blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica), waxmyrtle (Morella cerifera), and Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) are tolerant of salt spray.
Several tree species that are resistant to storm stresses are not necessarily suita-ble to plant for other reasons. Other trees have brittle wood and should not be planted near structures, driveways, or roads. These include boxelder (Acer negundo), eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides), red maple (Acer rubrum), and silver maple (Acer sac-charinum). Finally, make sure your selected tree is not an invasive plant such as the Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera). For more information and other lists of stormresistant trees, refer to Publication 3111, Storm-Resistant Trees for Mississippi Land-scapes. -0-
