Tony’s Take

LSU overcame the most brutal and embarrassing loss in College World Series history on June 25th, giving up 24 runs (been done before) and 23 hits (a new CWS record for one team) by Florida. Most other teams would have been almost too intimidated or too chagrined to put up more than a token battle the next day as the two teams met in the 3-game rubber match to determine the national championship, following that 24 to 4 butt-whuppin’. But the Tigers are the modern day standard for college baseball and less than 24 hours later, the brand-new Florida hit record was surpassed by one as the Tigers rang up 24 hits….along with a bunch of free passes with walks and hit batsmen….as they returned the whipping with an 18 to 4 soul-cleansing defeat over the Gators. It was sweet payback for the two-game sweep of LSU by these very same Gators in 2017 for the only CWS title Florida has.

National home run leader Jac Caglianone, who jacked a pair of homers on Sunday, took the Florida mound on Monday. The size 17 shoe-wearing player owned the first inning against LSU but then started going south in the second. You know the look on the face of a bully when he realizes he’s up against a real opponent? That was the look Caglianone had and less than an another inning passed as this Gator plunked batters, walked batters and was hit pretty good. Seven of the 11 batters he faced reached base, aided by a wild pitch. Jac is rated as the best two-way player in the college game but his final appearance Monday was one way into the Florida dugout as the Tigers returned the favor, 18 to 4, for the win.

The Gators like to do the Gator Chomp. However, the real bite came from the Tigers as they scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back, cruising to their seventh national title and becoming the sole second place title-holding team, behind only Southern Cal. Actually, the Tigers Crews(d) in the game, led by Golden Spikes winner Dylan Crews and his Crew From the Bayou: Tank White, Paul Skenes, Ty Floyd, Tre Morgan, Braydon Jobert, Gavin Dugas, Jordan Thompson, Josh Pearson, Hayden Travinski, Josh Stevenson, Thatcher Hurd and Alex Milazzo and especially Cade Beloso as the leaders and another dozen or so players on the roster.

The team ranked number one for 12 weeks to begin 2023 received 7th Heaven on Monday with their first championship since beating Texas in 2009. Florida reached number two during the season but it wasn’t to be. Filled with a roster of potential future major leaguers, Florida’s bush league performance was the difference in a game that was essentially over after the second inning.

Baton Rouge and the Tiger Nation celebrated June 28th in Alex Box Stadium. Now Head Coach Jay Johnson will take his talented 2023 returnees, less their two most talented players, Crews and Skenes, and talented leaders, Beloso and Dugas, as a more than confident, experienced and committed base roster. Adding the transfer portal players sure to come South to Baton Rouge and what should be the best recruiting class in the nation, along with the potential of three new pitchers this year who never had a chance to play following injuries and surgeries, the LSU Tigers are even a bigger lock than Alabama football to be the team everyone else will be chasing in 2024.

Words to GREAUX by

TORPEDOGRASS

The hot and dry weather has been atrocious this year and its causing a lot of stress on home lawns over the last couple of months. Even some of the healthiest home lawns are having issues. Now, there’s a lot that can happen to a lawn when it gets stressed. Insect and disease problems immediately come to mind, but weed issues are also another product of a stressful growing environment.

One of the worst weeds that I’ve ever dealt with in a home lawn or landscape in general is torpedograss, Panicum repens. It goes by many common names like coastal bermdagrass, bullet grass, and quack grass. However, we all know it torpedgrass which is a description of the sharp-pointed, torpedo-like tips of its underground stem or rhizome. Originally native to Africa and Eurasia, torpedograss was introduced into the U.S. in 1876. The USDA ramped up things and started importing torpedograss for use as a forage for cattle in the early 1900s. Nowadays, there are plenty of other forages used in livestock production and most don’t have the noxious and invasive qualities that torpedograss has garnered over the years. In fact, it is listed as a Tier I invasive plant in the state of Louisiana, meaning it is causing widespread negative impacts on wildlife or natural communities within the state. Other plants in this group include Chinese tallow, cogongrass, giant salvinia, and tung oil tree.

Torpedgograss is botanically classified as a grass and is placed in the grass family, Poaceae. It is a perennial plant with creeping rhizomes (underground horizontal stem) that can reach up to 3 feet in length. Leaves can be up to 10 inch long and 1/3 inch wide with a linear, flat, or folded appearance. There is a whitish waxy covering on the leaves that gives off a slightly blue/green color. The ligule on torpedograss is membranous with short hairs. This is different than zoysiagrass, that displays a hairy ligule with no membrane. The flower is described as openly branched with a length between 3 and 7 inches. While it can produce a seed, the primary means of locomotion are the rhizomes.

Management

Completing getting rid of torpedograss probably isn’t possible. The plant can easily reproduce from a piece of a root. With all off the soil moved around the country to build neighborhoods, there’s always a possibility of introducing something like torpedograss. Managing torpedograss is a much better way of dealing with it and the first step involves exclusion. Be wary of foreign material, especially topsoil, river silt, river sand, batture sand, pump sand, and fill dirt, brought into the home landscape as these are the primary means of introducing many weedy plants.

For control in the home lawn, you must know the species of lawn grass being grown. In zoysiagrass and bermudagrass lawns you can use the active ingredient quinclorac (Image Lawn Weed & Crabgrass Killer; Drive XLR8). To suppress torpedograss in a centipede lawn you can use sethoxydim (Bonide Grass Beater, Fertilome Over the Top II, and Hi-Yield Gras Killer). Sethoxydim wont outright kill torpedograss, but with three application a year, you can knock it back to where it isn’t noticed as easily. There is no selective herbicide option for St Augustinegrass. Best case scenario would be to locate where the torpedograss is coming, killing all vegetation with glyphosate, following up with laying new sod, and then scouting often to keep it out. We call that method the nuclear option.

In flower beds, use a hooded sprayer (or get creative with cardboard) and apply glyphosate to individual torpedograss plants. For flower beds where the weed has started growing in plants you may be able to use fluazifop (Fusilade) in an over-the-top application. However, you must refer to the product label and cross reference your desirable plants with the tolerant plants listed. Hand pulling can be helpful, especially if the invasion is caught early, but be careful and make sure all those root pieces end up in a garbage bag and thrown out with the trash. A burn pile might be the best option to dispose of hand pulled as long as you are allowed to do so.

For more information on managing torpedograss and other troublesome weeds contact your local county extension office.

U.S. FDA TO UPDATE GUIDELINES ON ANTIBIOTIC USE IN ANIMALS

Beginning on June 11, 2023 the U.S. FDA will initiate its next step in fundamental changes for how medically important antibiotics are used in animals. This is being done in an effort to prevent antimicrobial resistance. The intent is to promote the judicious use of medically important antibiotics in an educated fashion.

For the past 7-9 years these changes have been being discussed and implemented. In 2017 Veterinary Feed Directives were initiated to require a valid veterinary / client relationship for antibiotics mixed in animal food or water.

This next step will now require that many, if not all, over the counter antibiotics for animal use will require veterinary oversight through either a prescription or Veterinary Feed Directive. This will apply to food animal production and companion animals.

As this is implemented it is highly encouraged for all animal owners to become more educated. If you don’t currently have a relationship with a veterinarian as a client, now is the time to develop that.

This does not mean that products that you have been able to purchase over the counter will cease to be sold. The change is that they will now require veterinary oversight / involvement for purchase and use.

For more information please contact your local Extension office, reach out to a local veterinarian or check out this link from the American Association of Extension Veterinarians: http://www.extvets.org/resources.asp

Well, it has been a wonderful past few months for not only LSU Alumni but Tiger nation as a whole. The LSU Tigers came out from the loser’s bracket in the College World Series to not only advance to the Championship Series but to win it in dynamic fashion. In what will be a story all on its own, hats off to 5th Yr Senior Cade Beloso aka “The Bayou Bambino”. A guy who was coming back from a season ending injury and contemplating retiring from baseball. This guy not only came back to the team but played a key component all season especially in Omaha when it mattered most.

This article is sponsored by the number “2”. It has become a crucial number for the athletic department and especially for the baseball team. After Kim Mulkey won a title in her 2nd season in charge of the women’s basketball program here comes Jay Johnson in his 2nd year in charge of the boys on the diamond. In what on paper was one of the most dynamic teams in the program’s storied history, they not only met expectations but superseded them. 2 guys became the face of the team and turned this team into a media darling. If you don’t believe me then just look at the viewer numbers from LSU’s games on ESPN this year.

Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews took all the pre-season accolades and Jay Johnson made as spicy of a baseball gumbo as we have ever seen! One became a 2x SEC Player of the Year and Golden Spikes winner while the other became the National Player of the Year. These star teammates were selected with the first 2 picks of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft, becoming the first pair of teammates to go 1-2 in draft history.

LSU has had two players selected in the first round in two previous drafts – second baseman Todd Walker (Minnesota) and shortstop Russ Johnson (Houston) in 1994; and second baseman Mike Fontenot (Baltimore) and outfielder Todd Linden (San Francisco) in 2001.

The Pittsburgh Pirates began the draft by picking Skenes, the hard-throwing pitcher, No. 1 overall, and the Washington Nationals followed with Crews, the power-hitting outfielder. Skenes became the first pitcher to go No. 1 overall since Casey Mize was selected by the Detroit Tigers in 2018. Skenes’ selection was announced by Seattle Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr.

Skenes is the second LSU player to be the No. 1 overall selection in the MLB Draft. Right-handed pitcher Ben McDonald was the No. 1 overall pick in 1989 by the Baltimore Orioles. Skenes, the 2023 Dick Howser Award winner, the D1 Baseball National Player of the Year, and the SEC Pitcher of the Year, compiled a 13-2 record and a 1.69 ERA in 122.2 innings with 20 walks and an SEC-record 209 strikeouts. He finished No. 1 in the nation in strikeouts (209), strikeouts per nine innings (15.33) and WHIP (0.75). Skenes, a product of Lake Forest, Calif., finished No. 2 in the nation in ERA (1.69), No. 3 in strikeout-towalk ratio (10.45), and No. 5 in hits allowed per nine innings (5.28). He was voted the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series, as he was 1-0 in two starts with a 1.15 ERA in 15.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and 21 strikeouts.

Skenes posted a win over Tennessee (June 17) in LSU’s opening game of the CWS, working 7.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts. He then faced Wake Forest in the CWS semifinal round (June 22) on just four days’ rest and limited the Deacons to no runs on two hits in 8.0 innings with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Skenes, a member of the 2023 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, pledged $10 for every strikeout he recorded this season to Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of military and first responders who have died or been disabled.

Skenes went 12-2 with a 1.69 ERA and a Division I-leading 209 strikeouts, breaking the single-season SEC record, in 122 ⅔ innings for an LSU Tigers team that went on to win the Men’s College World Series.

Skenes became the sixth player -- and first pitcher -- to win Most Outstanding Player at the MCWS and go No. 1 overall in the MLB draft. Phil Nevin (1992) is the only other player to do both in the same year.

“He had an incredibly special season at LSU,” Pittsburgh general manager Ben Cherington said. “He obviously took another step forward this spring. It’s a really special combination of pitches and just as much about the mix and command than any one pitch.”

Crews became the first player ever to win the Golden Spikes Award, a national title and be drafted in the top five within a single year. He said he’s never been to Washington, but saw plenty of the Nationals while growing up and watching Bryce Harper.

“Seeing him in a Nationals uniform, it was pretty awesome,” Crews said. “I’m going to play my game and hopefully have as much impact as him. ... He’s just a complete player.”

Crews is the first college position player taken by Washington with its first pick since Anthony Rendon in 2011.

“A guy we’ve watched since he was in high school,” Nationals president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo said. “He’s the type of guy that we want here in Washington. He’s a terrific person. He’s got great character. He’s very competitive and he’s a winner.”

Crews, a junior from Longwood, Fla., batted .426 (110-for-258) for LSU’s 2023 National Championship team with 16 doubles, two triples, 18 homers, 70 RBI and 100 runs. He was voted to the College World Series All-Tournament Team, batting .375 (12-for-32) in the CWS with one double, one triple, one homer, continued on pp.

three RBI and 11 runs scored.

The 2023 Golden Spikes Award winner and the SEC Male Athlete of the Year, Crews finished No. 1 in the nation in runs scored (100), No. 1 in walks (71), No. 2 in on-base percentage (.567), No. 2 in base hits (110) and No. 3 in batting average (.426). He completed the year with a reached base streak of 75 games, which included all 71 games of this season and the last four games of the 2022 season.

Crews is a two-time member of the SEC Community Service Team for his exemplary work in the Baton Rouge area with families affected by autism. He was also named to the 2023 SEC Academic Honor Roll. The best previous result for teammates in draft history was first and third, a feat that happened in 2011, with the U.C.L.A. right-handed pitchers Gerrit Cole (No. 1, Pirates) and Trevor Bauer (No. 3, Arizona Diamondbacks), and in 1978, with the Arizona State infielders Bob Horner (No. 1, Atlanta Braves) and Hubie Brooks (No. 3, Mets).

Let me change the subject now by telling you about this cute tea cup. This is a Tracy Moreau design. A really cute and fun piece to paint. She is my favorite Canadian artist! And yes, the wood cutout had to come all the way from Canada. It took two weeks to get here! But it was really worth the wait. This piece was done with only 10 colors! The butterfly is a separate piece and can be glued anywhere on the cup that you would like. Included in this piece is a cut out base that actually lets the cup stand. I had so much fun painting this piece! I can hardly wait to paint the others for the craft show. Oh, come see me at Academy of Our Lady Christmas Craft Show November 11, 2023. I promise you won’t be disappointed. They will have lots of fabulous crafters there. So save the date and come by and tell me hi!

Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? Mine???? I am thinking about Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Yep, thinking about those cooler temperatures! Till next time.....

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

METRO PLUS FISHING REPORT

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

ARCHIVED STORY FROM 7/14/22

I fished for Venice fishing lodge.  We had 3 boats running with 9 guys, 3 per boat. I wanted to fish the skinny water for some meat knowing the slot bite was going to be very challenging.  The slot bite has been difficult lately due to various conditions.

After these two everything slowed down. We were loosing bait to little fish and the guys wanted to look elsewhere. We bounced around looking.

After going to many places I went back close to where I started. We finally got a legal sized trout. The  hardheads ,small trout,, croaker, etc. were keeping us busy and thinning out the bait. This seemed to be the only place we could find any good fish but the guys wanted to try other places so I made some more moves looking for action. I found some guys looking for bulls. They said the bulls  had slowed down but there was still some happening. All we could find was trout and nothing big.

One of the other boats with us came by and had me follow him to where he was fishing for bulls. We made the run and found gaftops and sharks. I made several moves looking for signs of bull red activity. The other boat headed in looking for slots before heading in looking for some slot fish action before heading to the barn. As we were getting ready to head in I hear “There he is!” The fight was on. He had the drag light and I thought it was a big shark. After a minor adjustment we had a reasonable battle rolling. This 40 incher was a great way to end the day.

We stopped to see the other boat. Turned out they were in the same place we had started in the morning. They picked up a pair of reds but it was hot and they were heading to the barn. The bite was still slow but I stayed  for a third time in this place today. It payed off. We found  a nice black drum and a good flounder before we headed in.

Back at the lodge we compared notes with the other boats. It was time for a celebratory ice cold beer. We did well for the day. I have no idea what is happening with the redfish. The dry weather we have had is lowering the river early. I think they may be trying to move in but are confused due to the temperature we are having. In the spring we look for water in the high 50’s before finding fish. I am starting to look at the water temps to see if that could be a key to the feeding habitat.

SWEET SUMPTHIN’S SLICE OF PARADISE BY: AMANDA SCHALL

Whether it’s for the holidays or hanging out with friends on a hot summer’s day, there is a type of pie for just about every occasion. Seasons and traditions may determine what type you’ll be making, but what makes the perfect pie?

First let’s talk crust.

Flaky crusts are sometimes tricky for new pie bakers, but don’t let them intimidate you. I find that the best recipes call for both butter and shortening (or lard). Personally, I like to have the total fat in my recipe divided as follows: 70% shortening, and 30% butter. While shortening can make a better, flakier crust, it lacks in flavor. Butter alone makes a very tasty crust, but can make your pie dough a little more temperamental, and harder to work with.

Flaky crusts are great for fruit pies; apple, blueberry, peach and certainly pies like sweet potato. Likewise, they are also functional for cream pies, but there are some extra steps you should take to ensure that your crust doesn’t get soggy if you won’t be eating it right away.

Most cream pie crusts are blind baked before they’re filled. This means that you would use something to weigh down the dough in the pie pan, so that it doesn’t puff up in the oven. After the edges of your crust start to brown slightly, it is usually safe to take your weight out, so that your crust can bake fully and achieve it’s full crispy, flaky potential. Lastly, if you brush your crust with a bit of egg white before baking, it acts as a type of “food shellac” when you fill it with your cream or custard, to help keep the moisture from making your crust soggy.

Now that you’ve baked a perfect golden crust, you are ready to fill it. Depending on what you’re filling it with, you can choose an extra moisture barrier that will keep our pie picture perfect for days.

For chocolate cream pie, dust a bit of cocoa powder over the crust before filling it.

For coconut, you can use shredded coconut or just some powdered sugarthis goes for banana and pretty much any other flavor of cream pie.

Now we all know that you can’t serve pie without whipped cream, but please put the can of Reddi Whip back in the refrigerator section at the supermarket. Real whipped cream is so easy to make and if you do it right it not only tastes better, but it can last for several days.

Just take some heavy whipping cream and pour it into your mixer (or you can whip it by hand, it’s just a little more work). For a pint of cream, you’ll need about ¼ cup of sugar and a few drops of vanilla (In the pastry world, this is actually known as Chantilly cream).

Start your mixer up at medium speed so that you can get the sugar worked up a bit, and after about 20-30 seconds set it on high. Continue whipping until the cream thickens, but don’t over whip it or you’ll be spreading toast instead of topping pie. When you lift the whisk and there is a peak on the end that can stand by itself, you’ll know what it’s ready. Now you just put it into a piping bag and you’re ready to go!

FREEDOM THROUGH FARMING BY:

One of the under appreciated aspects of the local food movement is it’s potential to mobilize voters. And, in our current age of gilded politics and legal bribery, the most important vote you make is with your wallet.

Public opinion does matter but corporate money moves mountains. It dictates what bills live and die and who gets put into office. Ever since the Supreme Court passed Citizens United, 93% of congressional elections and 94% of senate elections are won by the candidate with the most money, by that I mean the largest corporate donors.

These are the people whose voting pattern intentionally, or unintentionally sets into motion agricultural policies that make high calorie junk food cheap and locally grown broccoli expensive. These are the people whose lobbying co-opts nutritional professionals and who are the unseen architects of food choice.

Wined and dined, politicians are generally far removed from the needs of the people they represent according to many national polls. Case in point: An overwhelming majority of the American public, better than 90%, favor the labeling of genetically engineered foods (GMO’s). Why isn’t the mandatory labeling of genetically modified food a law?  It’s not a mystery.

Food industry tycoons and bio-manipulators like Monsanto are heavily involved in political campaigning for good reason. They’re looking for a return on their investments. The returns comes in the form of tax breaks, subsidies, and most importantly deregulation. Deregulation within the food industry translates into health care costs. The safest investment a food producing corporation can make is in a politician.

The government can’t decide what you eat, but they can decide how much it costs and how available it is to the working class consumer. Why would a single mom working two jobs prepare a healthy home cooked meal of organic vegetables when she can easily bring home something from the value menu of any fast food restaurant for a quarter of the price?

If you were previously unaware of the oligarchic state of our democracy, you’re not alone. Major media companies—the press used to be called the fourth estate—are bought and paid for by a handful of  corporate conglomerates.  Freedom of the press is free for those who have the money to pay for it. Editorial policy is married to advertising revenue. Period. Full stop.

One of the messages amplified by the privately owned media is that greed is good…because, well, you know, that’s how capitalism works. Cut throat competition is a necessary evil that keeps food prices low. Or, so we’re told. And that, my dear reader is why, the breakfast cereal aisle at your local grocery store is stocked with either sugary junk for the working poor or healthy high priced granola for the well heeled.

When you buy fresh and buy local, you’re supporting the guy next door. Money given to local producers, produces local wealth. By buying locally you are restoring our democracy if only incrementally You’re healing what made our country work, and, in turn healing yourself and your family.

Petsmart

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend is here again! In hopes of clearing our shelters, the Louisiana SPCA will be at multiple PetSmart locations in the New Orleans area with adoptable cats and dogs ready for their forever homes. July 14-16 from 1-5 pm, we will be bringing our adoptable animals to the following PetSmart locations:

2900 S. Claiborne Ave #300, New Orleans, LA 70115

1321 Manhattan Blvd, Harvey, LA 70058

6851 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie LA 70003 S Clearview Parkway Suite 105, Harahan, LA 70123

We currently have over 400 animals in our care that need loving adopters to take them home. Thanks to PetSmart Charities, we can bring those animals from both of our Louisiana SPCA campuses to multiple PetSmart locations so that they can find their perfect match.

Each adoptable will be up to date on their vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. Additionally, your newly adopted animal will come with a free bag of Hill’s Science Diet food and discounted online training through GoodPup. All normal adoption procedures will still apply during this event.

When you adopt through the Louisiana SPCA, you will be going home with your new furry best friend that very day! All your pet essentials will be available for purchase at PetSmart so that you go home prepared and equipped with the correct necessities for your adopted shelter pet. For this weekend only, we are closing our adoption centers at both campuses, but our adoptables can be found at any of the 4 stores mentioned. We hope to see you there!
