Tony’s Take

I didn’t want to write this column until later this year but all the talk about octogenarians has me moving the date up to mid-summer.

I read the list of folks who are 80 or are approaching 80 soon. One is James Carville, the Louisiana-born Democratic Party strategist, who was the first in his party to advocate that President Joe Biden step down. Carville has always been a breath of fresh air in politics and he is easily chattable on the street or in a public setting. Carville now has a number of Democrats joining the cry for the 81-year old president to step aside before the party’s convention next month. Carville is having several “senior moments” himself, including a problem with balance and forgetting things. Our nervous system changes for the worse the older we become, making it harder to stand, navigate or remember. That goes for most people now classified as “war babies” who were born before the end of World War II.

Carville has been in the news lately. But the name Jeffrey Tambor was also in this week’s papers of celebrities who had birthdays. Jeffrey turned 80 on July 8th. I’ve written about Tambor before, including mentioning him in a second column I wrote this issue. Tambor probably has health issues as well. I remember him as a heavy kid in our Yearbook class, a guy with a quick wit, developing his acting skills early. He became partially bald early in life and has had an amazing but controversial career both as a bad guy, a mental case, a happy sidekick or a buffoon. He’s one classmate I’d like to sit down with before our days are done.

The third one is me. I’ll hit that milestone in November, the same day my doting daughter turns 46. I began to have balance issues three or four years ago but my conditions were exacerbated last year following a very intense heart valve open heart surgery. I’m still in recovery or stabilization from that experience with an arthritic knee, neuropathy and tiredness. I get up and go to work nearly every day because the alternative is not appealing to me. I’m not looking for A Place For For Dad and I like being around younger people. I can still function as a publisher and a journalist and my mind does concentrate well in most cases, like this column. I have the ability to drive long hours without a problem and my appetite has returned, along with losing my anemia. And I still enjoy what I do, including meeting new people every day and introducing them to my publishing products.

Besides, there’a a number of 90-year olds who still function publicly on a daily or weekly basis. I hope to be in that number and look and act as they do. There are several in the Slidell area who do very well for their age or even someone 30 years younger.

Us “80’s” don’t want sympathy or being humored. There’s still a 20 to 30-year old inside, missing much of what that time in their lives allowed them to do. I can’t bowl and golf can be a real challenge. But I have learned to be a better pool player and even threatened to use my rarely-seen cane to make one shot the other night. Pool helps me with my balance and concentration blocks out much of my occasional knee pain.

I don’t think I’ll be doing this ten years from November. I don’t know what I’ll be doing but I hope it will be constructive and give me and my family pleasure and satisfaction. The Golden Years require some gold, which I believe i possess, and an attitude of acceptance and surrender of those things that put you in harm’s way. I believe in Jimmy Valvano’s “Never Give Up” speech and “not to go gently into that good night”. My good night will come when a power far greater than mine makes that decision through a plan I can never comprehend. Until then, I believe in Tim MCGraw’s philosophy infused in his hit, “Live Like You Were Dying”. I’m not going to ride a bull named Foo Manchu or jump out of a plane at 3,000 feet but I’ll still be a part of Friday and Saturday nights along with my place with family, friends and business associates. I don’t care for warehousestores and I don’t want to be warehoused. Just allow me to remain an independent Mom and Pop until the time of my demise.

PINK MUHLY GRASS

Ornamental grasses are a division of perennial landscape plants commonly overlooked by the casual gardener. They add a wonderful contrast of texture in the landscape when used near plants with large, coarse leaves. The leaves move easily with the breeze, creating motion in the landscape. The sheer diversity in color, size, and shape provides the industry with many exciting selections. One of the best attributes regarding the use of ornamental grasses in the home landscape is their care and maintenance requirements. They also develop extensive root systems that can support the plant during times of extreme environmental stress. All of these added together make for quite an impressive plant!

One of these ornamental grass plants that can be seen all over the region is pink muhly grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris. Sometimes referred to as gulf muhly, pink muhly grass is native to North America with a region of origin from the United States of America down to Guatemala and the Caribbean. Within the U.S., it occurs in prairies, pine barrens, and open woodlands from Massachusetts to Kansas and then down to Texas and Florida. The genus is named after Gotthilf Muhlenberg, an American botanist from Pennsylvania. The species name, capillaris, is of Latin origin and is defined as “of or resembling hair”, which is vindicated after seeing the plant for the first time.

Being a member of Poaceae, the main grass plant family in plant taxonomy, pink muhly grass shares many of the same characteristics of other grasses. It is considered a warm-season grass, like our common lawn grasses, due to its growth output during the summer months. Being perennial, it lives year after year going through dormant periods during the winter months. The real gossip begins with its attractive foliage and smoke-like flowers during late summer and fall months. The leaves are dark green in color, glossy, wiry, and thread-like. The panicles, loose multi-branched flowers, are pink in color and develop in late summer through the fall. They make for great individual specimens, but they really shine when used in a mass planting off in the distance. The plants themselves can get up to 4 ft tall with a width of about 3-4 ft.

The are a few cultural recommendations to follow to have a successful planting of pink muhly grass in the landscape. Like other grasses, pink muhly grass is going to require a decent amount of light for the plant to thrive. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight throughout the day. The area should have decent drainage. Pink muhly grass can tolerate a moist soil. However, if water collects regularly after rain events, I might reconsider. Lastly, take soil samples to determine soil fertility and adjust in situations where plant nutrients are showing “very low” and “low” levels. Comply with these conditions and pink muhly grass will thrive in your landscape.

Whether in the ground or in a mixed container with other plants, pink muhly grass is an excellent choice for Louisiana gardeners. It’s such a good choice that the LSU AgCenter has selected pink muhly grass to be a finalist in the Louisiana Super Plant Program.

STORM-RESISTANT TREES

Mississippi, like most states, has a wide range of climactic conditions. We have long, hot summers, but winters are relatively mild most years. Prevailing southerly winds much of the year bring warm, humid air from the Gulf of Mexico across the state often resulting in thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes depend-ing on the time of year. Regardless of your location, with these thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes come high winds and flooding from torrential rains including storm surges along the Coastal areas. Moreso in Northern and Central Mississippi than Southern Mississippi, there are occasional ice storms in winter.

While native vegetation has adapted to a wide variety of environmental conditions, some species are better able to survive storm events than others. It makes sense to choose tree species for the landscape that can withstand these natural events. Storm-resistant trees will make your property safer and reduce future tree maintenance costs. Very few tree species are resistant to all these storm conditions, so prioritize those that are most likely to impact your landscape.

Tree species vary in their tolerance to ice accumulation. Those species most resistant to breakage from ice generally have strong branch attachment, flexible branches, low branch surface area, and straight trunks. Icetolerant species having one or more of these characteristics include bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), black walnut (Juglans nigra), sweetgum (Liquidamber styraciflua), white oak (Quercus alba), and eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana).

Tree species vary widely in their ability to tolerate high winds, and the ability of any individual tree to survive wind will also depend on its

health. How-ever, there are some characteristics that enable trees to adapt to high wind and increase their chance for survival such as high wood density and defoliation. These include live oak (Quercus virginiana), flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica), sweet-bay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana), and crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica).

Tree species have varying tolerance to flooding. Tree roots need oxygen, and most tree species will not tolerate flooding during the growing season. Mature, vigorously growing trees of tolerant species are best able to withstand flooding. Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), sweetgum (Liquidamber styraciflua), and common persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) are examples of a flood-tolerant trees. It is a relatively slow-growing tree commonly found on wet sites near flowing streams or rivers. This decid-uous conifer’s needles drop in the autumn.

The sodium in salt spray or seawater can have detrimental effects on trees, including damaged or disfigured foliage, reduced growth, or even death. The American holly (Ilex opaca), blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica), waxmyrtle (Morella cerifera), and Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) are tolerant of salt spray.

Several tree species that are resistant to storm stresses are not necessarily suita-ble to plant for other reasons. Other trees have brittle wood and should not be planted near structures, driveways, or roads. These include boxelder (Acer negundo), eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides), red maple (Acer rubrum), and silver maple (Acer sac-charinum). Finally, make sure your selected tree is not an invasive plant such as the Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera). For more information and other lists of stormresistant trees, refer to Publication 3111, Storm-Resistant Trees for Mississippi Land-scapes.

2 SLIDELL LOCATIONS

Well, football season is officially still a ways away but it is never to early to talk football! There is still waves of NFL roster cuts that will be here before we know it, and with it being kind of a dead period, we figured…. It’s a good time to do our 53-man roster projection and It’s not a perfect. But let’s take a look at how we see what the final roster might look like:

Offense

Quarterback (3): Derek Carr, Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler

NFL teams no longer need to keep a third quarterback on the roster. An offseason rule change made it so that the “emergency third quarterback” could instead come from the practice squad. However, it is hard right now to project the Saints opening either Haener or Rattler to waivers or the threat of being poached from their practice squad at a later time. It makes sense that New Orleans could carry three passers (plus one that will come up later) in order to continue to develop the young talent they have and like at the position. Not to mention the team must be ready in case of injury, in which case options are always better.

It will likely be a tight race between Haener & Rattler but Haener will likely win the job. Although, Rattler will be the future!

Running Back (4): Alvin Kamara, Jamaal Williams, Kendre Miller, Zander Horvath

Pretty easy one here. The Kamara contract dispute may well be a bigger issue outside the facility than it actually is on the inside. These things tend to get worked out, so until proven otherwise, that is the expectation for now. Williams certainly still has a role in this offense and Miller could end up having a pretty big set of responsibilities before the season is all said and done.

Wide Receiver (6): Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, A.T. Perry, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Bub Means, Jermaine Jackson

It is possible that the third receiver behind Olave and Shaheed ends up having a lesser role than anticipated thanks to the team’s emphasis on more two-tight end sets, fullback usage and of course the involvement of offensive weapon Taysom Hill. In that case, five wideouts could work. But with the kickoff rules in particular, a sixth makes sense from a protection standpoint.

Tight End (4): Juwan Johnson, Foster Moreau, Taysom Hill, Dallin Holker

Johnson likely is out for a while. The obvious answer is Taysom will be the guy but as a joker he will likely be more involved all over this offense. Still, this unit seems to be in good hands. Holker is going to be a household name by the end of the season. He is a clone of the typical NFL Tight End and has great hands, good speed and blocks like a tackle. Very impressed with him so far.

Moreau is a shoo-in, of course. His versatility to play as a true-Y in-line and hold a pass-catcher role is a good fit for offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. He also looks to have bulked up a bit this offseason. If that means he progresses even further as a blocker while maintain his speed and ability to run routes, it makes him an even greater asset with a lot of opportunity to see the field.

Offensive Line (8): Taliese Fuaga, Trevor Penning, Erik McCoy, Caesar Ruiz, Nick Saldiveri, Landon Young, Oli Udoh, Shane Lemieux

The toughest part of this progression was whether or not offensive lineman Lucas Patrick or Lemieux made the cut. It could certainly go either way. Patrick’s extra curricular with defensive end Trajan Jeffcoat led to them both being removed from practice to wrap up minicamp could have left a bad taste for the team, giving Lemieux the upper-hand. Both have center/guard versatility which would be a valuable asset for the team.

Defense

Defensive Line (9): Carl Granderson, Chase Young, Cameron Jordan, Payton Turner, Isaiah Foskey, Bryan Bresee, Khalen Saunders, Nathan Shephard, Khristian Boyd

No big surprises here, especially at the top three. Jordan, Granderson and Young are excited to take the field together and they will get the lion’s share of snaps at the position. Turner and Foskey simply need to stay healthy and contribute where and when they can, including on special teams snaps.

Turner is intriguing specifically. Defensive lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon is likely sidelined most of the season, if not all. With his Achilles tear, the fourth-year edge defender has a chance to not only make an impact off the edge, but might be able to show some additional value as a versatile option that could move inside. It is a make-or-break year for Turner, who continuously flashes, but has just had trouble staying on the field.

Again, no big surprises. Rookie Boyd is the big new addition here. He has proven to be an exciting player in the run game throughout OTAs and minicamps. If he keeps that up, he will be a major asset to the Saints defense which ranked No. 22 against the run last year. Expect Saundrs to take a big step forward this year as well now that he is comfortable with the system and can play to a bit more of his athletic profile in 2024.

Linebacker (6): Demario Davis, Pete Werner, Willie Gay, Khaleke

It may be a little early to project Ford here being that he did not start working with in team drills until the end of veteran minicamp. But his smarts and instincts may rise him above the competition. Look for

Hudson, Jaylan Ford, D’Marco Jackson

players like Monty Rice and Anfernee Orji to make it a tough climb, though. Many wonder whether or not Werner will lose his stating role to Gay this year. But the truth of the matter is that they will share the field quite a lot in 2024 as more three-linebacker sets are expected. The Saints could also shuffle them based on matchup and game situation. A nickel look on second-and-8 may keep Werner on the field while a nickel look on third-and-9 may be better suited for Gay, for instance. The Saints have the ammunition to the creative with three starting-caliber options. A new look for the team.

Defensive Backs (10): Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, Alontae Taylor, Kool-Aid McKinstry, Tyrann Mathieu, Jordan Howden, Shemar Jean-Charles, Johnathan Abram, Ugo Amadi, J.T. Gray

Another easy projection here. Lattimore and Adebo are the starters on the outside and Taylor holds down the slot. Though McKinstry will get his opportunity to compete with each. Having four starting-caliber corners is just as important as those three linebackers referenced a moment ago. It is unlikely that all three of your starting corners are going to start all 17 games. Having a fourth options again this season is a big win for New Orleans.

Jean-Charles may not be a household name, but his contributions on special teams will go a long way. Especially as the heightened importance of the kickoff comes back to the game. He also gives the team some depth at corner having taken snaps both outside and in during OTAs and minicamp.

The most versatile room on the roster. Each of these players can handle multiple responsibilities throughout the defense, just how head coach Dennis Allen teaches it. Mathieu and Abram look like the sure-fire starters at the position right now. But as Howden gets healthier, he will get more opportunities come training camp to try to win the box-safety role.

Harris gives the team unique depth in that he can both play just about anywhere in the defensive secondary or as a dime linebacker. Both he and Gray should also be major contributors on special teams as well.

Special Teams (3): Blake Grupe, Matthew Hayball, Zach Wood There is no reason to project any changes in the kicking operations at this time. Wood will go unchallenged, and rightfully so as he returns from his first-ever Captain season. Grupe’s competition Charlie Smyth has been a little inconsistent up to this point and Hedley has added a more traditional punting style that he can blend with his rugby-style punts. Having a comfort with both styles should maximize his ability to impact from every area of the feild, so long as he can be consistent.

MOSS IN LAWNS

I’m often asked about moss growing in lawns, and, more specifically, is this moss kill-ing my grass? The answer is no. Moss is an opportunistic plant that will grow where turfgrasses are thin and weak, much like weeds. Moss does not persist in stands of dense, vigorously growing turf, but once it is established, grass plants will not spread into those areas.

There are several species of moss that grow and persist in home lawns. Unlike seed-bearing plants, mosses produce structures called sporophytes which produce spores that can be wind-blown from one area to another and germinate to form thread-like structures called protonemas. The protonemas will produce buds that develop into the short, leafy stalks that most people recognize as moss.

In order to obtain effective control of moss, one must carefully consider the reasons why it began to grow in the lawn. Encroach-ment of moss into lawns is usually the result of conditions that are not conducive to good growth of turf. Moss is most commonly asso-ciated with poor drainage; compaction; poor soil fertility; low soil pH; heavy shade; and excessive moisture. If any of these factors are limiting turf growth, moss can invade the lawn and establish a permanent residence.

There are very few products that will effectively kill moss and following label directions is important. Moss can also be scraped away with a garden rake or shovel. However, the first step in moss control is to improve soil conditions and a soil test can help you begin that process. Attempts to eradicate moss from a lawn are rarely effec-tive unless changes are made for a dense, actively-growing turf to take its place.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops & looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the

eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together… Author unknown…

FIRE BLIGHT

Fire blight is a harmful bacterial disease that impacts a wide variety of plant species, including hawthorn, ash, blackberries, and roses. Apple and pear trees are particularly susceptible to fire blight infections. Severely affected trees and shrubs often display disfigured shoots, stems, and blossoms, and in some cases, they may die due to fire blight.

The name “fire blight” is derived from the blackened, burned appearance of the affected plants. The bacterium responsible for fire blight, known as Erwinia amylovora, is native to North America and was introduced into northern Europe during the 1950s and 1960s. This pathogen causes the formation of cankers on the plants, which become active in early spring as temperatures rise and buds begin to develop. Active cankers produce a yellowish to white bacterial ooze that can appear several weeks before blooming. Insects, such as flies, play a role in spreading the bacterium by carrying this ooze from plant to plant.

During blooming, pollinating insects quickly spread the pathogen from flower to flower, initiating the blossom blight phase of the disease. Early symptoms of blossom blight may manifest 5 to 30 days after infection, depending on daily temperatures. This bacterium overwinters exclusively in holdover cankers on infected host plants.

Effective control of fire blight involves a combination of cultural and chemical approaches. Some plant varieties are more resistant to fire blight than others, and in areas where fire blight is prevalent, susceptible varieties should be avoided. Additionally, infected plant parts should be removed and destroyed to minimize sources of the bacterium. It is also important to control insects, as they can spread the bacterium.

Chemical control of fire blight is possible through the use of antibiotics or coppercontaining compounds. For example, Streptomycin (Fertilome Fire Blight Spray) can effectively control fire blight if applied as soon as blossoming begins, but it cannot treat established infections. However, it’s important to note that copper compounds are toxic to some plants susceptible to fire blight, so labels should be followed carefully.

PETSMART CHARITIES NATIONAL ADOPTION WEEKEND

PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend is here again! In hopes of clearing our shelters, the Louisiana SPCA will be at multiple PetSmart locations in the New Orleans area with adoptable cats and dogs ready for their forever homes. From July 19th through 21st, we will be bringing our adoptable animals to the following PetSmart locations:

2900 S. Claiborne Ave #300, New Orleans, LA 70115 1321 Manhattan Blvd, Harvey, LA 70058 6851 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie, LA 70003 S Clearview Parkway Suite 105, Harahan, LA 70123

We currently have hundreds of animals in our care that need loving adopters to take them home. Thanks to PetSmart Charities, we can bring those animals from both of our Louisiana SPCA campuses to multiple PetSmart locations so that they can find their perfect match.

Each adoptable will be up to date on their vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. Additionally, your newly adopted animal will come with a $50 voucher for our Community Clinic services, a free bag of Hill’s Science Diet food, and discounted online training through GoodPup. All normal adoption procedures will still apply during this event.

When you adopt through the Louisiana SPCA, you will be going home with your new furry best friend that very day! All your pet essentials will be available for purchase at PetSmart so that you go home prepared and equipped with the correct necessities for your adopted shelter pet. For this weekend only, we are closing our adoption centers at both campuses, but our adoptables can be found at any of the 4 stores mentioned. We hope to see you there!

For more information about locations, dates, and times, visit louisianaspca.org/events.

To see our current list of adoptables, go to louisianaspca.org/adopt/animals.
