Tony’s Take

The audacity of filing a lawsuit against LSU, the NCAA and the National Football Foundation should make for great comedy this summer. The suit was filed by former LSU coach Les Miles, whose previous forays into the worlds of stupidity and stupor have been well documented and claimed Miles was denied an opportunity for eligibility to be voted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Where to begin. Shall we start with Miles’ sexual predatory history, where breast size and appeal were a benchmark for a job in Miles’ venue? Or perhaps his sterling record at Kansas, where he lasted two years only because the regents there were too embarrassed to admit their mistake of hiring Miles after only one year. Perhaps it was Miles throwing quarterback Jarrett Lee under the bus after two non-costly interceptions against Alabama in 2011, definitely irritating “The Mad Hatter” because Lee had something to say to Miles after being ejected.

It’s not true that Miles schooled Joe Biden in how to make jabberwocky statements but it is believable. Miles is the perfect example of how incompetence, supported by ignorance, makes a zero into a hero. But Miles is no hero. He is a sad, incredibly clueless man who stumbled into a national championship in 2007 because his players wanted it and Miles kept his mouth shut about Ohio State. He also cost LSU a national championship in 2011 because of his false pride in benching Lee and embarrassing LSU in a rematch with Alabama for the national championship then. A man who was mislabeled “Mr. Clutch” was really Mr. Choke….a man who mindlessly nicknamed one of his daughters “Smacker” when it was Miles who should have been smacked down.

The lawsuit claimed that LSU’s voluntary vacating of 37 football wins during Miles years as coach cost Miles the minimum percentage of wins to become eligible to be voted in. Like the great heros - Woody Hayes and Joe Paterno - also men with feet of clay. The real issue is whether Miles has a 60 or even 70% winning margin, it is only one criterion to receive entry into the HOF. If you had it, Les, the rest of your track record would result in a resounding rejection. Don’t pour salt into a wound you helped cause from your checkered past. Just go away and do what morons like you do and leave LSU alone. And don’t even think about entry into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

I have news for you, Les. In this world of NIL, that is exactly what you will get and deserve. You came along when the NCAA needed a clown on the field and you filled the bill. You should be happy that you actually had a career and received the recognition you did. But to put your sorry ass into the College Football Hall of Fame? Ain’t gonna happen. Hall of Shame? Defninitely. Along with Hayes and Paterno. Don’t go looking for Bo Schembechler’s spirit to help you with this one, Les.

PLANTS COOL THEMSELVES AS WATER MOVES THROUGH THEM.

When daily temperatures start reaching above 90°F and the rain events become scarce, heat stress becomes a very real thing in regard to plants. When it gets hot human beings can stop what they are doing, find some shade, drink some water, and take a break before they go back out and continue work. Plants are a little different. They can’t just get up and walk to safety! Plants have developed ways to mitigate heat and drought stress form the inside out.

Without getting too technical and reliving a high school biology class, let’s take a quick review of how plants are engineered. We have a root system that takes up water and dissolved nutrients while also providing a strong base to hold the plant upright. Stems and branches provide architecture and support to hold leaves and arrange them to intercept sunlight. Leaves are filled with chlorophyll, the pigment used in photosynthesis that creates energy by splitting a water molecule. Water is pulled up from the root system, travels through xylem tissue where it is delivered to the leaves. Some of that water is used in photosynthesis and some is used by a process known as “transpirational cooling”.

Transpiration is the overall process of water moving through a plant. One of the main forces that influence the upward pull of water through xylem tissue are differences in water potential. Water potential is a complex concept to explain, but in this instance, I’m going to refer to it as the difference in pressure between water in soil around the roots and water in the plant leaves. When the root zone is saturated with water, there is a great pressure felt as water rushes into the plant. On the other end, water is removed via photosynthesis and evaporation. That change in pressure influences the upward movement of water.

Now let’s think of plant leaves intercepting hot, afternoon sunlight during the summer months in the deep south. It gets so hot that damage can occur. Some of that water gets hot enough where it turns into vapor (evaporates) and is released though stomata, or specialized cells that allow for gas exchange. This release of water vapor not only helps to maintain a steady flow of water molecules from the root system, but it also releases heat and helps to buffer the temperature inside the leaf, preventing damage. We call this process transpirational cooling.

All of that said, please make sure you have a plan to water your landscape plants this summer, especially if rain becomes infrequent. Most laypeople think to provide shade when it gets hot, but you have just learned how plants use water to help cool themselves down. Reducing sun might help regulate temperature, but it also inhibits photosynthesis. Providing supplemental irrigation and doing things to conserve water in the soil are the best approaches when trying to prevent heat stress in the garden.

Maintain a 3–4-inch layer of mulch above the soil in planting beds to shade the soil surface and prevent the evaporation of water in the root zone. The most efficient way to irrigation is with drip tape, drip emitters, and soaker hoses where water is applied directly to the soil, preferably under a mulch layer. Irrigate for longer periods of time, where the soil is allowed to become saturated.

Back off on the frequency of irrigation, so that the soil dries almost completely before the irrigation system comes back on. This concept can become annoying when done by hand but stick with it because it encourages your plants to expand their root systems and become much more resilient to drought conditions like we experienced in 2023. -0-

“Café Du Monde” by Adam Sambola

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hope you all have been well and are surviving the down pours and raging heat we have been having. Typical Louisiana summer. Of all times for the a/c in my vehicle to go out. I really shouldn’t complain, I have a 2007 durango and have only made minor repairs to it (knock on wood)! I can’t justify, at my age, spending the kind of money they are asking now for new vehicles. I will only buy another vehicle if this one absolutely totally cannot be fixed, within reason. The mechanic installed the new a/c compressor and I am driving cool again!

I know this is late, but I have had a lot going on so you will be seeing some mixed up projects so please bear with me for a while. But anyway, this is a bouquet I made for Father’s Day. I didn’t get an order placed in time with the supplier for flowers so I had to grab what I could at the local store. They did have a bunch of 6 roses and 3 lillies in one pack which looked nice. I then decided on 2 bunches of alstroemeria and 1 bunch of daisies. With the leaves from the flowers I really did not need any additional greenery for a filler or any accent flowers as I had everything I needed. Guess when you are in a bind, have a lot on your plate, if you try hard enough with what you have you can make something work with a little effort. And since this was for my Dad I know he wasn’t going to be too judgemental. Given the circumstances, I think it came pretty nice. That’s it for this time.

So what will your next project be? Mine....another challenge. Trying to stay off my leg and foot for 6 to 8 weeks after surgery (that’s what the Dr. wants....we’ll see) and still paint/craft. I Got This!!!

MAYS AMAZED BUT NEVER WAS “STRETCH”

God bless the “Say Hey Kid”, Willie Mays, who passed away last week right after his 993rd birthday. Mays, a Mobile, Alabama native, along with the best power hitter of his generation, Hank Aaron, was a sight to behold. Like Ted Williams before him, who missed three years of his prime serving in World war II, Mays lost two years during the Korean War. Mays was the quintessential five tool player; he could hit, hit for power, run, field and throw. His catch off Vic Wertz’s bat in the 1954 World Series is the logo of Major League Baseball, not in the way of Jerry West, another sports legend who passed the week before, but because of the times. The NBA was looking for a logo and chose the silhouette of West; Major League baseball didn’t have the equivalent and was still in love with the memory of Babe Ruth, so you’ll never see the Mays logo because it never existed.

May’s exploits were better voiced outside of San Francisco, where the now New Yorker Mays was exciting but still the “East Coast”. East and West coasts never did get along, so May’s off field activities and community involvement were rarely publicized. Mays was also not the greatest clutch hitter of his time, regardless of what you have read from those who have waxed so elegantly about Willie. He was a man of the streets but so were most athletes of the era. Remember: it was Johnny Unitas’s boss in his offseason NFL job that wouldn’t let Unitas off to play in the NFL All Star game. Different times then; thanks to TV and Curt Flood for changing them.

Mays hit four home runs one Saturday in May of 1959 against the Milwaukee Braves. I was playing in a baseball game in San Francisco that day and rooted for Mays. The Giants won and they hit eight homers for the game. But Mays never won a batting title or came close to the Triple Crown like his contemporary, Mickey Mantle of the Yankees did. He batted third and the first time I saw him in person was on a sunny Sunday afternoon in April, 1958, as the Giants played the third game of a three-game series against the Dodgers. It was at the now demolished Seals Stadium, a cozy ballpark holding maybe 20,000 fans with no upper decks and set in the heart of a San Francisco working man’s neighborhood. My Dad, a notorious hater of pro sports, had relented and purchased two tickets along the first base line for the first Sunday game ever played on the West Coast between these two bitter rivals.

I knew more about the Dodgers than the Giants. The Boys of Summer were still intact: Gil Hodges, Carl Furrillo, Duke Snider, Don Newcomb, Pee Wee Reese were all starters that day. The only known quantity for the Giants was Mays, number 24, patrolling a modestly-sized center field in the old Triple A ballpark.

I was a sports nerd then with little knowledge about the game. I had just started listening to LSU football the year before as Jimmy Taylor toiled one season before the arrival of Billy Cannon. I could pick up the games on WWL radio because they were played at night and the cool atmosphere plus the unlimited power of the New Orleans radio station made the broadcast seem local. So when I went to the Giants/Dodgers game, I “rooted” for the Dodgers because they were marketed and the Giants hadn’t been. I have to admit I don’t remember much of what Willie Mays did that day as the Giants won to take the three-game series. But I became an instant Giants fan when a rookie first baseman named Orlando Cepeda hit a monster home run over the left field bleacher outer wall into the street just east of the park. Later, in 1959, the arrival of another Mobile area player named Willie “Stretch” McCovey would become a San Francisco Giant legend and was voted the fans’s favorite Giant of all time. Not taking anything away from Mays, McCovey and Mays were more than the equal of the Yankees “M&M” duo of Mantle and Roger Maris. Mays and McCovey batted third and cleanup and for many, many years that duo was the best in baseball.

McCovey passed a few years ago and received his recognition. Mays was the more complete player but today’s argument on where Mays stands as the GOAT of major league baseball is a relatively new one. I’m glad the exuberant Mays received the post mortem accolades he deserved. And if you never saw Mays (or Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Mantle, Ernie Banks, Mike Schmidt or Pete Rose) play the game, you’d know how today’s statistical athletes don’t compare to the rough and tumble players from the post-World War Two era.

The passing of Mays IS the end of an era. I hope St. Peter called him safe when he arrived in Heaven.

COMPOSTING

What better way to start the summer than recycling our natural resources? By composting yard and kitchen wastes, you can create your own mulch and fertilizer. Compost is a free source of “slow release” nutri-ents. It also loosens compacted soils and helps sandy soils hold nutrients.

Fallen leaves and shrub clippings are a good start to your compost project. Other compostable organic materials you can use are grass clippings, pine straw, and vegetable/fruit peelings, paper, and coffee grounds.

The size of a compost pile can vary depending on how much organic waste material is available. Typically, a compost pile 3 feet wide by 3 feet high is sufficient; anything smaller and the organic waste will not decom-pose properly

When constructing your compost pile, alternate using brown (leaves, straw) and green materials (grass clippings, vegetables) in your compost bin. Any table scraps containing meat or oils are not recommended to be used as they attract critters that aren’t beneficial and can be harmful. Egg-shells are okay.

Rainfall will provide most of the needed moisture, although you may need to add water to the pile during extended dry periods. For the best re-sults, keep the pile moist but not soggy. If you pick up a handful, it should not drip water when squeezed.

Turn the pile on a regular basis to move oxygen through the pile to increase decomposition. You can buy compost bins with moving cylinders that can be turned with a handle. The process of decomposition will generate extreme heat (over 150°F in the summer) within the pile, which can kill weed seeds and disease-causing organisms.

Done correctly, composting is very easy to do and is a great way to do something good for your community, your yard, and your wallet! For more information on composting, contact your local Extension office or visit extension.msstate.edu and search for composting.

SICKLEPOD, THE WEED EVERYONE LOVES TO HATE

Known by many as “coffeeweed or cof-feebean,” sicklepod is an annual herd that can be found in most horticulture and agriculture setting across the Southern United States. From lawns and gardens to the pastures and row crops, al-most everywhere you scratch the soil and have a little moisture you will find sicklepod sprouting. This plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions of North and South America. It has also been widely introduced to many warmer regions of Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Emerging from mid-spring through mid-fall, the plants grow vigorously and range from 1-6 ft tall at maturity with showy, yellow flowers, with long slender seed pods and compound leaves that are long oval shaped. The branching tap root can reach up to 3 feet in length. All parts of the plant give off a distinctive odor when crushed.

The seeds of sicklepod are very hardy and form a persistent seed bank when allowed to mature. In stud-ies as much as 270 pounds of seed per acre have been recovered from soil samples.

In some areas of the world sicklepod is used as a pot herb, but this plant is widely viewed as a noxious weed with toxins that can affect humans. It is included on several invasive plant lists while also being unpalatable and toxic to livestock.

There is a multitude of herbicide options to control sicklepod. Recommendations vary with the setting, and it is recommended to check labels or consult with someone such as your lo-cal Extension Agent for best management practices. In crops or gardens shallow cultivation is an option along with physical removal. Clipping or cutting back prior to flowering to inhibit seed production can help to avoid seed bank build up in the soil.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Meet Joel, a 10 week old gray and white kitten. He is safe in his foster home now, but he had been living outdoors in a rural area where his mother was killed by a predator. Fortunately, Joel and his littermates were rescued. Joel gets along great with dogs and cats. He is sometimes a little shy with people, but he warms up quickly once he gets to know them. When Joel has all of his shots and has been neutered, he will be ready for adoption. Please contact START if you are interested in adopting Joel or another one of our wonderful rescued felines.

HURRICANE TIPS

June 1 marks the first official day of hurricane season. Although severe weather is expected, we want to make sure we are fully prepared. With that in mind, we want to urge pet owners to create an evacuation plan that includes their pets! Pets are members of the family and should be included in all disaster preparations. Did you know that before Hurricane Katrina, it is estimated that roughly 259,400 families owned pets in New Orleans? Because there was no formal evacuation plan for residents needing assistance or for those with pets, as many as 104,000 pets were left behind. 44 percent of those that chose not to evacuate did so because they refused to leave their pets.

Natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods are out of our control. However, planning for a disaster is something we can all do. Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. The supplies you gather should be able to provide for your pet for at least five days.

Are you ready for hurricane season?

Does your pet have up-to-date vaccines, and do you have copies of your pet’s medical records? All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices will require proof of immunization before accepting pets.

Are your pet’s ID tags up-to-date?

Does your pet have a microchip? This is a permanent form of identification that can be your pet’s round-trip ticket home in the event they get lost. Need a microchip? Schedule an appointment at the Louisiana SPCA’s Community Clinic.

Compile a list of places to go. Consider staying with family or friends outside of the strike zone. Look into pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or boarding facilities.

Evacuation Checklist

• Food and water. Keep food in an airtight, waterproof container. Water for pets should be in addition to the water you need for yourself and your family.

• Medicine and medical records. Keep an extra supply of medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container. All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices require proof of immunization before accepting animals. Collar with ID tag; harness or leash. Your pet should always wear a collar with its rabies tag and identification.

• Documents. Place copies of your pet’s microchip information, registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents, and medical records in a clear plastic bag or waterproof container.

• Crate or some sort of pet carrier. Carriers should be large enough for your pet to stand up, completely turn around and lie down. Mark your name, address, phone number, and an alternate contact on the carrier.

• Sanitation. Include pet litter, newspapers, towels, plastic trash bags, and cleaners in your evacuation bag so you can pick up after your pet.

Orleans Parish residents who require assistance evacuating should register themselves and their pets with the City for the City Assisted Evacuation Plan (CAEP) by dialing 311 or visiting nola.gov/ready. When it comes time to evacuate, if you are planning to stay in a hotel, ensure that they are willing to accommodate pets. Do not bring your pet to the Louisiana SPCA. We do not board pets and will be evacuating the animals in our care in the event of a strong storm.

For more information about planning for an evacuation with your pet, visit www. louisianaspca.org/evacuation. If you are a pet owner in Plaquemines Parish in need of evacuation assistance, please preregister with the Plaquemines Parish Health Department by calling 504-934-6690.
