Tony’s Take

This college world series has a montage of strangeness about it in so many ways. To begin, one of the natural hosts for the super regional, Indiana State, ceded its position because of cultural traditions and conflicts with available and serviceable hotel and restaurants during the three-day event. So Larry Bird’s school, Indiana State, took the “terre haute” or high ground, translated into english, and said they would venture to the wilds of fort worth and play a red-hot TCU in their own ballpark instead of putting undue visitor pressure on the limited resources in terre haute. I imagine the flight costs, length of connections, layover times and limited availability plus lack of major accommodations would even strain the horned frog fans as Terre Haute is about as isolated a major college town as exists in the United States. It would have been the only midwest location for a super regional. Meanwhile, Kentucky will venture to Baton Rouge for a series against LSU. The tigers pounded the wildcats twice this season before losing the third game to kentucky. Wake Forest has turned into the regular season version of Tennessee from last year but without the attitude and wise-guy skipper. I pity Alabama, who skimmed into the regionals after they lost their head coach to a betting scenario, playing this team.

I think the Florida/South Carolina and Stanford/Texas matchups are the best of the eight super regionals with wake forest and alabama the worst. Besides LSU and Kentucky, i am most excited about the Southern Miss/Tennessee matchup, which realistically was scheduled in Hattiesburg instead of Knoxville. Politics and sec pressures created this scenario. Besides, Knoxville’s restaurant scene and night life are not all that much more exciting than Hattiesburg and for such an exciting burg, where is Knoxville’s sense of tailgating? Besides, Tennessee doesn’t deserve another super regional, based on their “Greatest of all time” 2022 baseball squad taking it in the shorts against notre dame and their lousy, arrogant attitude, including their coach.

Now - my predictions, made the Tuesday before the supers begin.

Wake Forest to beat ’Bama, Stanford to beat Texas, LSU to beat Kentucky, Southern Miss to deservedly upset Tennessee, Oral Roberts to win over Oregon, TCU to end Indiana State’s dreams, Virginia to beat Duke and Florida to win over south carolina. Hey! 100% Before the last two games on monday night before the end of the super regionals! Pretty darn good! I see Wake Forest, Stanford, LSU and Southern Miss in one bracket with TCU, Florida, Oral Roberts & Virginia in the other group.

I will not predict the cws results this time around. Let’s see how close we came to getting the supers and their winners 100% correct.

YELLOW-POPLAR WEEVIL Odontata calceatus

Southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora, is not only the state flower of Louisiana, but it is also a prominent member of the local ecosystem and a popular landscape plant throughout the Southeastern U.S. We enjoy our Magnolias and when they do not look right, we get concerned.

I’ve been noticing a few situations earlier this year involving a magnolia trees, necrotic leaf tips, and holes in most of the new leaves. These symptoms appear in April/May on southern magnolia when buds start to become active. As the season progresses, symptoms progress throughout the entire canopy. It has the ability to make a mature magnolia tree look like it’s in steep decline.

The yellow-poplar weevil, Odontota calceatus, goes by a few common names. Some refer to it as the sassafras weevil while others say tuliptree leafminer or magnolia leafminer. The reason for various names comes from the fact that the yellow-poplar weevil can feed on tuliptrees (Liriodendron tulipifera), sassafaras trees (Sassafras albidum), and magnolia trees (Magnolia spp.). Weevils are a type of beetle and are members of the order coleoptera. They have a characteristic elongated snout. The adult yellow-poplar weevil overwinters in leaf debris around host trees. As the first days of spring start to warm, the adults fly up into the canopy and start feeding on buds and leaves as they also awaken from dormancy. These adults lay eggs inside the midrib of the leaves. In May and June, these eggs begin hatching the young developing larvae mine within the leaf for food. The larval feeding of yellow-poplar weevils typically produces large necrotic leaf tips commonly described by victims for their infestations. As these larvae mature and eventually become adults they continue feeding in the canopy through June. By the end of July adult activity subsides as they disappear into the forest floor, mulched area, or leaf litter below the tree.

If these symptoms are observed and adult beetles are found on the leaves then it’s safe to say that there is a yellow-poplar weevil infestation. Start a control program by collecting the fallen leaves and disposing of fallen leaves throughout the root zone area. Remember this intervenes with the overwintering behavior of adults. To manage the current population, most insecticide options labeled for use on landscape plants should control these pests. Mature trees present an issue for the homeowner due to not having the proper equipment to get decent coverage in the canopy. Treat young trees, newly planted trees, and trees with a manageable height with a contact insecticide. Look at popular active ingredients like permethrin (Bonide Eight, Martin’s Permethrin SFR), zetacypermethrin (Ortho Bug B Gon), and carbaryl (GardenTech Sevin) to apply on newly planted and young trees within a manageable height. Systemic insecticides can be applied to the root where the active ingredient is taken up and circulated inside that plant. It provides control as the pest feeds. Make systemic insecticide applications once new growth emerges in spring. It will take several weeks for the product to fully circulate in the tree, but it helps manage the June hatch. Don’t forget to read the product label before applying a pesticide product.

It will take the whole growing season to correct but these sporadic insect pests, but they can be controlled easily when identified early on. It’s helpful to keep in mind that these beetles do not kill trees but rather they occasionally hinder the tree’s appearance during heavy infestations. Noticeable outbreaks tend to reduce over time due to parasites that build up within the weevil populations. Louisiana, with its long growing season, provides opportunities for mature trees to compensate for any damage from early in the season. -0-

National History Day Students Selected for Exhibit Showcase

National Museum of American History Will Host Student Exhibits on June 14

College Park, Maryland—National History Day® (NHD) and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History are pleased to announce that 48 student-produced exhibits will be featured in a live showcase at the museum on Flag Day, June 14, 2023. The exhibits were created by middle and high school students competing in the 2023 NHD National Contest. Many of the NHD students whose projects were selected for this showcase by NHD affiliate coordinators addressed topics relevant to their own states’ or local communities’ histories. These exhibits also reflect the 2023 NHD theme, Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas. “We are thrilled to have our students return to Washington, D.C. to compete in the 2023 NHD National Contest,” shares Executive Director Cathy Gorn. “We appreciate the National Museum of American History for hosting this showcase and sharing the work of these students with such a wide audience on a very important day at the museum.”

Belle Chasse Academy student Jude M. Shadden has been selected for the showcase.

I was asked to donate a trip for Hunt of a lifetime.  These people were from Pennsylvania. This is  simular to  wish to fish. His first day would be inshore and his second day would be offshore for a swordfish.

Early in the game he hooked up to a bull red that .soon got unbuttoned.  That was a type of fight he had never experienced. He was going to see what he had o a bit later in the day.

Mason and his dad were amazed at the fisheries we have here. He told his dad he has never caught this many fish in a day. I think at that time, he had boated 6 trout. We were only there 15 minutes. In Pennsylvania  the fishing is a much different picture.  The picture was soon to get brighter.

Dad hooks up to a monster. This is not a trout for sure. I saw a big roll after the first run and a bull red flashes its beautiful golden side at me. Now dad has the biggest fish of his life time as far as a fight goes on light tackle. After a trip from the bow to way past the stern and back  this beauty comes to the net. Great story.  Any more coming?

All this time we are steadily putting trout in the boat. I am having a banner day. Dad hooks and lands a second bull red. When I am assisting dad with some fish, we hear Mason say I need help. I took the rod from dad that had another good trout on so dad could take over the fish Mason had. We had another bull on the line. As Mason and I were watching the fight Mason says to me, “If I fought that fish any more I would have (Shredded) my muscles. I said what and Mason repeated the same thing. That statement woke me up to something I did not realize all day. His illness was not muscle strength but muscle composition. He said he had a tracadomy and a feeding tube in him for over 2 years. He did not want to hold this fish for a picture because he did not fight it. I told him he hooked it and also netted it. This was his fish to get a picture with.

Life is good!

We ended with a good mess of fish,  two happy guys, and 50 pounds of filets of trout for a feast back in Pennsylvania.

Novena of Hope

O Mary, my Mother, I kneel before you with heavy heart. The burden of my sins oppresses me. The knowledge of my weakness discourages me. I am beset by fears and temptations of every sort. Yet I am so attached to the things of this world that instead of longing for Heaven am filled with dread at the thought of death. O Mother of Mercy, have pity on me in my distress. You are all-powerful with your Divine Son. He can refuse no request of your Immaculate Heart. Show yourself a true Mother to me by being my advocate before His throne. O Refuge of Sinners and Hope of the Hopeless, to whom shall I turn if not you? Obtain for me, then, O Mother of Hope, the grace of true sorrow for my sins, the gift of perfect resignation to God’s Holy Will, and the courage to take up my cross and follow Jesus. Beg of His Sacred Heart the special favor that I ask in this novena. (Mention your request here… )

But above all I pray, O dearest Mother, that through your most powerful intercession my heart may be filled with Holy Hope, so that in life’s darkest hour I may never fail to trust in God my Savior, but by walking in the way of His commandments may merit to be united with Him, and with you in the eternal joys of Heaven. Amen. Mary, our Hope, have pity on us. Hope of the Hopeless, pray for us.

Hi, Everyone!

Hope all is well with you all and you are all enjoying the warm weather. It feels like Summer already! Summer doesn’t officially start until June 21!!!

Not looking forward to the sweltering temperatures.

It’s Gnome time again! You know Gnomes are one of my favorite things to paint! Today I decided to share a Garden Gnome with you. The original design is by Laurie Speltz, who also loves creating and painting Gnomes. This was so much fun to paint and I love the happy colors. He stands 16” tall and would look so adorable as a door hanger, in the middle of a wreath, or standing on a counter or table. The total time I spent on this project was a little over six hours. I think he was worth every minute of it. I certainly hope you like my little Gnome. I plan on painting a Fourth of July Gnome also. I know Father’s Day is right around the corner, I plan on making bouquets of flowers for the cemetery. I will be happy to show you pictures of those.

Well, that’s it for now. So...what will your next project be? Mine.....flowers and painting. Always fun to do!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

It all started with the train. Slidell began as a small railroad camp, nothing more than a tent city. The New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad were laying tracks to connect New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi. Surveyors decided to set up camp on the high grounds north of Lake Pontchartrain. Baron Frederick Erlanger, a railroad financier, named the site after his deceased father-in-law, the revered John Slidell. Slidell was founded in 1883 and incorporated in 1888.

John Slidell was a prominent political figure who served as a United States Senator until Louisiana seceded from the Union in 1861 and joined the Confederate States of America. Under Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Slidell served as an envoy to France. On a mission to France, Slidell was abducted from the European bound Steamer, the Trent, and imprisoned in Boston. In 1862, he finally arrived in France where he secured a bond issue for the Confederacy through the banking house of Baron Emile Erlanger. Slidell tried to garner support from Napoleon, but it never materialized.

With the success of the railroad, Slidell began to grow. Fritz Salmen opened a brick factory and lumber yards and shipbuilding facilities were later added. Many of the buildings in Olde Towne and some older buildings in New Orleans were built with the bricks made at the Salmen brickyard. In 1907, Slidell’s early settlers needed a proper town hall. For the cost of $3,546, they built a two-story, brick building on First Street. On the top floor was the mayor’s office, the tax collector, and a couple of clerks. The room also doubled as a courthouse and a meeting room. On the first floor was the marshal’s office along with five jail cells. In 1928, for the cost of $700, a firehouse was added to the building.

Today, that building houses the Slidell Museum. The jail cells haven’t held prisoners since the 1960s, but they now contain a wide array of intriguing artifacts. Phonographs that play wax spheres instead of records, period costumes, an early dictation machine –invented by Thomas Edison – called the Ediphone, vintage photographs, a Super 8 video camera and projector, and an old baby scale are only a few of the antiquities on display.

The jail cells also provide a popular photo opportunity. “All the kids that come to the museum are handcuffed and locked in the cell,” jokes Greg Scott, the museum curator. “We end up letting most of them out, but only after the parents get a few pictures.”

Scott says that when prisoners were in the cells, they laid on hard platforms chained to the wall and received only a burlap sack filled with hay. “You slept in your street clothes, you didn’t get any blankets. And old-timers told me that it was good to keep your mouth shut. There was no coddling of prisoners back then.”

Of interest to many locals is an old booking book that lists the names of everyone who spent time in jail, including some very familiar Slidell names. “If you came through the door, your name went in the book,” says Smith. “You’d be surprised by the number of people who’ve found their relatives in here.”

The second floor of the museum, once the mayor’s office, now houses the Slidell Mardi Gras Museum. The Mardi Gras Museum features numerous artifacts, photographs, and costumes from the collection of Bonnie Vanney.

VEGETABLES: DISEASES

Garden vegetables can be attacked by a wide range of fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. Since no single control measure is effective against all diseases caused by these microscopic pests, gardeners must rely on a well-balanced defense to keep diseases in check.

One of the first steps in setting up a disease control program is correct identification of disease problems—the earlier the better. With quick action, you can control leaf spots, blights and mildews within the same season. Other disease problems may not be treatable this season, but correct disease identification allows you to take preventive disease control measures next year.

Many garden vegetable diseases are easy to identify. Others may need the advice of someone more experienced, such as an Extension agent or plant pathologist. Disease is best identified on plants that are less than 50 percent damaged. Do not use dead plants.

If the Extension agent is unable to identify the disease, he or she can have a plant pathologist diagnose the diseased specimen for a fee of $10.00. The pathologist at Mississippi State will identify the disease and send you a report on how to control and prevent the disease.

Additional information on diseases and nematodes that attack garden vegetables is available at your county Extension office.

Diseases take their toll in Mississippi gardens every year, but adequate planning and following recommended disease controls will keep losses to a minimum.

HOMECOOKING AND COMFORT FOOD

WRITTEN BY DR. PETER CANNIZZARO

Cooking with cast iron pots and skillets is both becoming a thing of the past and growing also. Let me explain:

There are cooks out there that want the latest and greatest new cookware, willing to shell out the money for it and will always use the latest and greatest cookware to get their cooking done. On the other hand, there are cooks that want to cook “old school”by using cast iron cookware, a piece of literal history, cooking meals with pots and pans that were used in days gone by and something that has very much stood the test of time. You see, cast iron cookware, as it is sold today at hundreds of retail outlets, is the same that was sold in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Absolutely nothing has changed except the price. It is made in the good old USA. It is fired and molded on machines that, if not original, are mechanically the same as the machines from days gone by. Iron cookware is made to last! It is basically indestructable, provides even heat distribution and contrary to popular belief, the surface is virtually non-stick if the pan is seasoned and cleaned correctly. Any meal can be prepared in cast iron pots and pans; deep frying, saute’, slow cooking, baking, roasting: anything. Most folks who enjoy and appreciate using cast iron for their frying, making slow-cooked stews and gravies, and roasting meats will use cast iron exclusively.

Cast Iron Recipes

In a cast iron Dutch oven, pre-heated on the stove top, add a 3 to 5 pound brisket that has been rubbed down and trimmed. Use your favorite barbeque rub to prepare the meat after trimming or have your butcher trim it for you. I make a rub using the following: ½ cup of each: table salt, black pepper, garlic powder, chili powder (rub into meat liberally on all sides, save extra rub for next time in a Ziploc in the fridge). After the meat is trimmed and rubbed and trimmed, place in hot Dutch oven with that fat side up, cover on pot. Slide in the oven pre-heated to 325 for 3 to 4 hours. At the 3 hour mark, see if the meat is fork tender, falling apart, if not cook a little longer. This meat dish goes great with baked beans, corn, potatoes and a salad.

Roasted New Potatoes

Buy some small red potatoes, roadside stand if possible (they will be the freshest) wash them with cold tap water, removing any sand, grit or dirt. Cut each one if half and place in pre-heated Dutch Oven or Cast iron skillet or any cast iron pan with a lid. Salt and pepper the potatoes liberally, add one stick of melted butter along with a tablespoon of parsley flakes and a cup or so of water. Adding a tablespoon of minced garlic is a great addition to us garlic lovers. On stovetop, cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally until potatoes are tender and easily cut with a fork; should take about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the size and quantity of potatoes.

Pet Anxiety with Bad Weather

When bad weather strikes, we want to prepare our pets for the loud sounds and sights that accompany a severe storm. When a storm hits, it can be a stressful and overwhelming time for our pets who don’t understand where the loud sounds and sudden flashes of light are coming from. Keeping our pets feeling calm and secure during severe weather is key to ensuring their safety and well-being.

Before a storm ever hits, we want to make sure our pets have some form of identification, whether that’s a microchip or a visible ID tag. Some severe storms can destroy or knock down fences, and the scary sounds and sights of a storm can cause pets to run away. Having your pet microchipped or wearing visible identification can reunite you with your lost pet after a severe storm.

If your pet is anxious during a storm, we recommend closing all blinds and curtains to muffle the noise and reduce lightning flashes. If your pet is still showing signs that they are anxious, you can try engaging them in an activity that distracts them from the sounds of the storm. If this doesn’t work, make sure your pet has access to a place they feel safe, such as a kennel or under your bed, and play calming music to drown out the loud noises. Providing them with a stimulating toy or treat, such as a Kong with peanut butter, in their safe space can also help distract them.

After a major storm, be sure to check the yard before allowing your pet outside. There could be downed powerlines, gaps in fences, or dangerous debris in your yard. If your dog has extreme anxiety during severe weather, talk to your vet and/or certified trainer to see if there are other measures that you can take to reduce your pet’s anxiety during storms. For more information about keeping your pets safe during severe weather, please visit www.louisianaspca.org

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Tina, Jasmine and Taemin found homes this past weekend through START’s adoption program.

Rescued from the street, the woods and neighborhoods where no one claimed them, all three now have loving families. START raises funds to provide rescued pets with veterinary care. All rescues are spayed/neutered, tested and vaccinated. Foster families care for them until they find forever homes. START volunteers are so grateful to all who open their hearts and give these wonderful rescues a loving home. There are so many homeless pets waiting to be adopted. You can help by volunteering, fostering, adopting or donating. Contact START or your local animal shelter or rescue organization.

MY EMAIL CONCEPT AND PRICING

MY EMAIL is a marketing method targeted to influence people with financial flexibility who can afford a good deal or service contract.

MY EMAIL is a service that “inserts” ads into the trailing end of Metro Plus, the largest and most established shopper/editorial publication (32 years) in your shopping region. It’s 1/2 page or larger sized ads command readership in messages that require recipients to respond in a timely manner, every two weeks, when Metro Plus is published.

It reaches 60,000 emailed homes in your regional trade area once every two weeks.

It enters households with a threshold income of $60,000 to those with over $100,000 annually.

At $125 for a 1/2 page or $250 for a full page, complete color ad message, the cost is less than two-tenths of a penny for the 1/2 page and less than four-tenths of a penny for the full page. You will reach 43 to 86 times as many households/businesses for your dollar than direct mail costs with a bigger, cleaner and easier to read message than on newsprint with no print production costs.

MY EMAIL clients also get the benefit of non-emailed Metro Plus readers, who can go directly to the Metro Plus website, printmediaplus.com which was promoted in the newsprint version of Metro Plus and on the rack signs at the physical locations where it was distributed prior to MY EMAIL.
