Tony’s Take

The migration from Olde Town to Olde Location down on Pontchartrain had taken the better part of two months and the distraction of planning and leasing the space at 3805 Pontchartrain Drive most of March. But it was finally done as the hurricane season officially started and the oohs and ahhs from the faithful filled the spacious new offices of Postal Plus. Not even an F-3 tornado that took the center’s tower sign and damaged the side of one tenant on the other wing of the shopping center on April 10th could deter the efforts to make the fifth (and final) location for Slidell’s premier shipping and mailing center the finest looking center not only in Slidell but anywhere this old reporter has wandered in his nearly 80 years.

It was a sweet homecoming for Postal Plus. The business began in October 1997 during the peak of Bargains Plus!s reign as the most read and responsive free publication on the Northshore. It was shoehorned into a 144 square foot front office in Suite 2 at the very same 3805 Pontchartrain location and fortunately was opened just before a record-setting Christmas season that year. Within a few years, a third bay opened next to Bargains Plus!/Postal Plus and an on- the-cheap remodel gave them enough room to move around.

The ladies of Postal Plus loved their location. It catered to all of South Slidell and the Olde Town folks and as a worker or two came and went, it was Hilda Onellion and Katie Feezor who built the core, catering to the personalities of a sophisticated yet down home clientele. Then a female, no lady this, came to visit on August 29th, 2005 and when Katrina and shortly thereafter her sister, Rita, were finished with Slidell, Postal Plus and the Bargains Plus!/The Slidell Monthly/Mr. Map consortium was forced out by 54 inches of lake water. Five months at a client’s building on West Gause and then a year back on Pontchartrain got things back to normal but most of Pontchartrain was either leased out or still uninhabitable. So the desire to own a building led Postal Plus to Olde Towne and the purchase of a 36-year old law office that had been remodeled into something between an industrial office complex and a chopped up 2,000 square foot building. But there were eight parking spaces, a really nice back yard and lots of parking elsewhere. As Olde Towne grew, so did Postal Plus. However, it was evident with the evolution of Olde Towne into an almost entirely restaurant, drinking establishment and entertainment area and the decision that narrowed the turning radius at certain intersections which hindered traffic flow that the desire to return home got stronger.

In March, I approached my daughter, Katie, who now owned Postal Plus and asked her if she wanted to remain where we had been for 17 years or see if we could find something more desirable on Pontchartrain. Through an old realtor friend, we were informed about a location on Pontchartrain that included two adjoining bays and that had floors that had been epoxied and a state-of-the-art alarm system with completely updated lighting and a reasonable and responsive landlord who helped make the move “back home” happen. Now, with Katie and Aimee’, Postal Plus’s customers have room to roam, sit and rest themselves. The buzz here will continue through the summer and into its 28th autumn.

3805 isn’t the prettiest shopping center in Slidell but she wears her lipstick perfectly, applied by a determined young lady and others when you enter Suite 17. Welcome home, Postal Plus ladies; it’s been a long time and you deserve it.

BORDERED PLANT BUGS ARE TAKING OVER!

Folks have been causing digital ripples on the internet with all the social media posts about thousands of little black bugs invading their courtyards, patios, and other outdoor communal areas around the home landscape. “I don’t want them to eat all of my plants!” and “I’m scared to go outside!” are some of the common complaints I read in the comment sections. People have also been calling and emailing with questions about these same insects.

Bordered plant bugs just hatched in Southeast Louisiana, and they are causing a stir with the gardening public. Their large numbers cause folks to think something strange is happening and they need to immediately intervene and prevent it. However, bordered plant bugs aren’t major plant pests. They may feed on blackberries, blueberries, and other edibles plants, but they don’t do harm. They feed on a wide range of weeds, plant seeds, and shoots of native tree species while scavenging on dead insects and animal feces.

What we know as the bordered plant bug also is called a largus bug in other areas. However, we all know it by its scientific name, Largus succinctus. These insects are members of the Largidae family which is a part of the insect order Hemiptera, “true bugs”. Adult bordered plant bugs are about ½ inch in length. Their bodies are somewhat elongated and flattened, steel blue in color, and have distinctive red/orange-colored edges on the wings and across the front portion of the back. These insects go through a hemimetabolous lifecycle or three life stages including egg, nymph, and adult. Nymphs go through gradual changes until they reach the adult stage. This is different than insects like butterflies who go through complete metamorphosis life cycle where immatures look nothing like the adult. Bordered plant bug nymphs resemble the adult stage but are smaller and lacking fully developed wings. Nymphs are often seen in large numbers after eggs hatch leading to the current concerns coming from the public.

Now we can’t say that largus bugs or bordered plant bugs will leave our plants alone completely. Entomologists describe their feeding habits as general feeders meaning they feed on a variety of native plant species including various oaks, wax myrtle, and various weed species. Plants and insects have evolved over time to support each other. The insect takes just enough to survive, and the host plant doesn’t even know what’s missing. I’ve never seen a bordered plant bug kill a plant like what some suggest. They may be pesky in numbers, but there is no need to worry about them taking down a tree. So, the next time you see a battalion of border plant bugs on the patio, take a picture, post online, and share this knowledge with your online friends.

Hi, Everyone!

Hope you all are doing well. I am still battling the upper respiratory infection, sinusitis, and allergies. I keep saying enough already, I am done with Spring/Summer bring Winter back! I have never had this happen to me before, not all at one time! I still don’t feel well, going on week three. Looks like I will be spending a lot of time indoors this Summer.

Well, Guess I am a little ahead of time for the Fourth of July but that’s okay too. Most of the craft stores already have Fall and Christmas decorations out. Now that is Really jumping the gun!

Okay, let’s talk a little about our Highland Cow. She’s of a mind that she doesn’t like this heat either! You can tell by the look on her face. The surface for this is a 6 X 10 tag, base coated Warm white. I went down about 3.5 inches, using painters tape, taped off right below the 3.5 mark. Painted the surface above the tape with Sapphire. When that was dry, using a sea sponge, tapped on Deep Midnight Blue, making sure to let some of the Sapphire blue show through. The bottom section I taped off some of the white sections and tapped on some Santa Red for the red stripes. Went over those with Maroon. Traced on my Highland Cow and painted her accordingly. After all her hair was added I painted on the red, white, and blue flowers. This really should have only taken a couple hours honestly. But, it took me the better part of the day. So this is a wrap.

So what will your next project be? Mine is on the painting table. Hope to get to it soon as I am feeling a little better. Until next time!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

WATERING YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN

Vegetable gardens usually need about 1 inch of water (630 gallons per 1,000 square feet) per week in the form of rain or irrigation during the growing season. Gardens in sandy soil may need as much as 2 inches of water per week in midsummer. Where a water source is located close to the garden, there are few excuses (a local ban on watering during a shortage) for letting the garden suffer in dry weather.

Mulches that slow soil surface evaporation can reduce the amount of water needed. Soaker hoses and drip or trickle irrigation systems wet only the soil in the root zone and can cut in half the amount of water used.

Where a water source is not close to the garden, it is possible to water some plants with a little work. Partially bury 1-gallon plastic milk jugs between tomato, pepper, eggplant, squash, and other widely spaced plants. Punch a few small holes near the bottoms of the jugs before placing them in the soil. Fill the jugs periodically with water hauled to the garden. The water will slowly seep into the soil, providing moisture to the root zone.

There are several choices of garden sprinklers, ranging from the simple garden hose with a spray nozzle to semi-automatic equipment. Many portable lawn sprinklers are adequate for the garden. Adjust the rate of water application so that it is not faster than it can enter the soil. Water applied too rapidly runs off, resulting in erosion or puddles, and causing soil compaction.

Since overhead sprinklers wet plant leaves, water early enough in the day to allow time for leaves to dry before night. This helps keep leaf diseases from developing and spreading. Each watering should wet the top 3 to 5 inches of soil. Frequent, light watering results in shallow rooting, susceptibility to damage by drought, and plants that are easily blown over.

Drip and Trickle

Soaker or perforated plastic hoses are excellent for watering the garden. Place the hose with holes up along one side of the plants or underneath an organic or plastic mulch.

A number of different drip and trickle irrigation systems are available through mail order catalogs, magazine ads, and local distrib-utors. The systems operate at low pressure and deliver small amounts of water very slowly through pores in the delivery tubes or emitters punched into the delivery tubes. An irrigation system makes it possi-ble to water a large garden all at the same time.

Correct use of a drip irrigation system should keep veg-etable plants actively growing in dry periods yet cause no prob-lem when rain occurs following irrigation. The system, when properly operated, keeps soil at the base of the plant (root zone area) moist. This may require operating the system for short periods three or four times a week during dry weather.

Drip irrigation, when used correctly, prevents drought stress but is not designed to correct drought stress like sprinkler irrigation, which wets all the soil.

RACOOONS

The Northern Raccoon, Procyon lotor, is found throughout the United States. Raccoons can be found in nature, such as in areas with large trees and bodies of water, as well as in towns and cities. As urbanization increases, encounters with raccoons in these areas are becoming more common. They easily adapt to their sur-roundings, whether that be in forests or cities. Raccoons have a grizzled gray color, bushy tails with black and gray rings, and a characteristic black mask-like marking on their face. They are pri-marily active at night but can occasionally be seen during the day.

Raccoons eat a variety of foods, including crawfish, frogs, fish, eggs, fruits, and berries. They will also forage around homes eating food left out for pets or placed in the trash can. To prevent this, trash cans should either be kept in a garage or shed, or fastened with straps. It’s also a good idea to bring in any pet food that’s left outside. Raccoons can be a problem in vegetable gardens as well. Placing electric fencing around the garden area is one method to keep them out. Homeowners should never feed raccoons as this can increase their population around the home and potentially lead to bites. Raccoons can be a carrier for rabies, parasites, and other pathogens harmful to people and household pets.

Raccoons can occupy spaces under sheds or porches, or in attics. The best way to prevent this is by removing openings into these spaces. Chimney access can be pre-vented by covering up the chimney opening with a heavy metal screen or sheet metal cap. Attic access can be reduced through screening and by removing overhanging branches and other routes of access to the roof. If a raccoon does appear in your yard, the best option is to give it space. Most animals, if they aren’t used to people, will try to either escape or hide until the coast is clear for them to leave. It is when people get closer, either accidentally or inten-tionally, that the animal feels the need to defend itself. Contact the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisher-ies, and Parks for questions related to injured or stray raccoons.

GET KIDS INVOLVED IN GARDENING

Some of my fondest memories are of growing up helping my dad in the vegetable garden. As a youngster it was hard work at times but that’s how we always had fresh vegetables in the freezer. My dad seemed to have the “it” factor when growing a vegetable garden so we always had more than our family of five could eat. As a result, much was always given away so it wasn’t wasted. I’m sure that’s the way it is with most people growing vegetables, we want to share with family and neighbors. It can be a rather proud moment when showing off what you’ve grown!

By helping my dad, I learned a lot about growing vegeta-bles at a young age. I didn’t always look forward to the beginning of gardening season in early spring because that was prep time and we had a rather large, conventional garden to prepare for planting. But from the time you placed the seeds in the ground until the time of harvest you got to witness something special. A garden can be a wonderful place for kids. Gardens provide oppor-tunities for playing, learning, and having fun!

In my job I’ve had many opportunities to provide school garden projects. In fact, it’s one of my favorite things to do as an Extension Agent. If you want to get kids excited, plant a garden. Allow them to help and, if they want, let them do most or all the work. Explain to them why we do or do not do certain things to help plants grow; what plants need to survive: light, water, nutrients; what plants will do best for your growing situation and why; when do we plant and when do we harvest?, etc. Don’t just tell them, show them! There’s a LOT of learning possibilities! Many people these days don’t have an area for a conventional garden but don’t let that stop you. There’s a lot of vegetables that can be grown easily in pots or other containers. You can even plant other things like annual and perennial flowers to get them involved, and excited!

Young kids have a very short attention span. Digging holes is one thing that seems to hold endless fas-cination so let them get dirty! Make sure that you have lots of options available so they can get started immedi-ately and stay busy. Have soil, seeds, pots, and maybe a seed starter tray ready. If a few or several kids are in-volved, have enough for everyone, even garden tools, to prevent competition. When choosing your vegetables include a few radishes. Radishes are quick to germinate and harvest time is relatively short. This allows kids to reap their planting rewards without getting easily discouraged or just plain bored. Growing their own vegetables will generally get kids to try eating things they otherwise wouldn’t touch.

As our society becomes more urbanized and less connected with nature, gar-dens provide chances for kids to learn about nature, how to grow food, and the im-portance of the natural world. Gardening with kids can take place at home, at com-munity centers, school, and/or at after-school programs. Kids soak up knowledge at an early age so it’s a rewarding opportunity to share your gardening knowledge with them.

& MENTION THIS AD.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Angel was not having an easy time of it as a stray in a neighborhood with 4 little kittens to care for. This brave little tortoiseshell had a badly broken leg yet she was doing her best to protect her kittens from harm. No one claimed her or knew where she came from, but she was friendly and had been someone’s pet.

Angel and her kittens were rescued and taken to a vet clinic where her leg was removed and the kittens were treated for severe eye infections. Angel is now doing well, recovering from the surgery and getting around great. All will be available for adoption to loving families in the near future.

Contact START to find out how you can help pets like Angel.

HURRICANE TIPS

June 1 marks the first official day of hurricane season. Although severe weather is expected, we want to make sure we are fully prepared. With that in mind, we want to urge pet owners to create an evacuation plan that includes their pets! Pets are members of the family and should be included in all disaster preparations. Did you know that before Hurricane Katrina, it is estimated that roughly 259,400 families owned pets in New Orleans? Because there was no formal evacuation plan for residents needing assistance or for those with pets, as many as 104,000 pets were left behind. 44 percent of those that chose not to evacuate did so because they refused to leave their pets.

Natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods are out of our control. However, planning for a disaster is something we can all do. Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. The supplies you gather should be able to provide for your pet for at least five days.

Are you ready for hurricane season?

Does your pet have up-to-date vaccines, and do you have copies of your pet’s medical records? All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices will require proof of immunization before accepting pets.

Are your pet’s ID tags up-to-date?

Does your pet have a microchip? This is a permanent form of identification that can be your pet’s round-trip ticket home in the event they get lost. Need a microchip? Schedule an appointment at the Louisiana SPCA’s Community Clinic.

Compile a list of places to go. Consider staying with family or friends outside of the strike zone. Look into pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or boarding facilities.

Evacuation Checklist

• Food and water. Keep food in an airtight, waterproof container. Water for pets should be in addition to the water you need for yourself and your family.

• Medicine and medical records. Keep an extra supply of medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container. All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices require proof of immunization before accepting animals. Collar with ID tag; harness or leash. Your pet should always wear a collar with its rabies tag and identification.

• Documents. Place copies of your pet’s microchip information, registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents, and medical records in a clear plastic bag or waterproof container.

• Crate or some sort of pet carrier. Carriers should be large enough for your pet to stand up, completely turn around and lie down. Mark your name, address, phone number, and an alternate contact on the carrier.

• Sanitation. Include pet litter, newspapers, towels, plastic trash bags, and cleaners in your evacuation bag so you can pick up after your pet.

Orleans Parish residents who require assistance evacuating should register themselves and their pets with the City for the City Assisted Evacuation Plan (CAEP) by dialing 311 or visiting nola.gov/ready. When it comes time to evacuate, if you are planning to stay in a hotel, ensure that they are willing to accommodate pets. Do not bring your pet to the Louisiana SPCA. We do not board pets and will be evacuating the animals in our care in the event of a strong storm.

For more information about planning for an evacuation with your pet, visit www. louisianaspca.org/evacuation. If you are a pet owner in Plaquemines Parish in need of evacuation assistance, please preregister with the Plaquemines Parish Health Department by calling 504-934-6690.
