Combine the big men talents of Kevin Durant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the admiral, David Robinson and you are looking at the best NBA player on the court today and for the next five years. Nicoli Jokic’ carries the eastern european sports attitude that dominates players from his region. He doesn’t care what race, what religion, what philosophy of life you follow. You don’t intimidate people like Jokic’; you might beat them on a given night but there’s absolutely no psychological element in the loss or sense of being inferior. Jokic’ is the wingman you want walking through Bedford-sty at 2:00 am, the guy on your shoulder as you leave a small neighborhood diner to go home through six blocks of mean streets in Chicago, Baltimore, Philly or New Orleans late at night. He would view the Ukraine war as just another street conflict to be observed but not reacted to.
Jokic’ beat the very best at his game. No one….not even Chamberlain, Russell or Jordan…. could be as completely dominate as was lebron james when he wanted his will to dominate a section of an nba game. Make no mistake about it; James willed his Cleveland Cavaliers over the record-setting golden state warriors seven years ago and damn near did the same thing last monday night in a dominant first half for his Los Angeles Lakers. But Jokic’ matched him in the second half and Laker players could not provide James with the edge.
It was evident james saw the dominance and realized then that no matter what combination of players he put together, nothing was going to put james over the top again. And that’s probably a good thing because what else can james do? He’s already second only to Jordan in status, he has a fistful of records, his personal demeanor and approach to others has him following the path of the greatest Sports equality hero of our time - James Brown. What better time than now to have Lebron move into that role, to emulate a man who James has honored time and again. I hope we’ve seen the last of James in an NBA uniform and wearing the distinctive threads of the 21st century leader which he so richly deserves.
As for the miami heat, enjoy your Jimmy Butler moments. They won’t bother Nicoli Jokic’’s quest for the Denver Nuggets first NBA title. It’s not even important. The Nuggets can hit threes, know how to rebound on the offensive boards and up to mid-court and have the only real superstar on the floor with Jokic’. It will be a Joke-ic’ if Denver doesn’t win this series in five games or less.

BARK LICE SHOWING UP ON LANDSCAPE TREES.
One of the things you learn while working as an Extension Agent is that most of the landscape issues, we encounter happen every year. Whether it be a disease problem, an insect problem, or even a plant availability problem, everything seems to have its time on the calendar. One of those issues that happens every summer is the appearance of webbing that covers tree trunks and limbs. Sometimes it’s only a small section and other times it may be the entire branch. Whatever the case, it is quite odd and can cause concern to the novice caretaker.
To make a long story short, there is no need to worry about this insect. We consider them beneficial in the grand scheme of things. These little creatures spend their entire life on the trunks of trees and shrubs. Most of the time they go unnoticed. That is until a curious gardener notices a group of them when they first hatch or when the colony produces a white, grey webbing covering the bark of a tree. We refer to these insects as bark lice or tree cattle.
Bark lice are insects in the order Psocoptera and commonly referred to as psocids. They get the nickname because of their small size, like how some people call aphids plant lice. Others call them tree cattle because of the way they move together. If you look underneath the webbing, you can see small brown insects traveling up and down the bark of your tree. Bark lice nymphs appear dark gray with pale yellow bands between abdominal segments. The adults have shiny black wings that are held like a tent over their abdomens. The webbing itself does not cause any damage but merely provides protection from birds and other predators.
Bark lice do not harm the tree. They will feed on dead bark cells, fungi, algae, and other debris growing on the tree trunk. In other words, they clean the trunks of trees. They even feed on lichens, the bluish-green scaly organisms found on the trunks of woody plants throughout the southeast region on the United States. This fact in turn makes them a beneficial insect in the landscape. They are working for you!
Because of this beneficial nature, I do not recommend doing anything about it. Sometimes the webbing may be unsightly. If this is the case, then I would suggest using high water pressure to physically remove the webbing from the trunk. You could let them remain. In a couple of months, it will blend in well with the festivities of Halloween. Add a spooky feel to your landscape this year by leaving bark lice alone and they will help decorate your yard with cobwebs and silk!

Prayer is personal.
Well, the diamond has not been too kind to the LSU faithful lately. After the Lady Tigers suffered an embarrassing double home regional loss to the fighting jalapenos of Louisiana @ Lafayette, the baseball team lost 2 of its final 3 series and went 1-2 in the SEC Tournament.
As far as softball goes, I am not sure Head Coach Beth Torina will be able to withstand another sub-par year. Her recruiting has been okay but not where it should be and unless there is a staff shake-up, I do not project her to be in the dugout for the Lady Tigers next season.
Now, we all knew that the baseball expectations were high, and they were not going to go un-defeated but to lose 2 of the final 3 series to sub-par competition is down rout worrisome. You can say we haven’t had some of our best pitchers due to injury, but championship teams bounce back from those and win titles. The good news is that even though Jay Johnson and his Tigers were ousted from the conference tournament, the issues were with the untimely hitting and not the pitching. Surprisingly, the pitching stood up to the competition and besides a few pitchers that failed their test to see if they could be used in a regional, it was a good weekend for guys on the mound.
The surprising part was how many runners LSU left on base and more specifically sitting on 3rd just ready to add another run on the board. The problem was, the tigers did not get the timely hits needed to win over the weekend. The lineup was productive but was 3 for 20 with runners in scoring position, leaving 12 stranded. All will be revealed Friday when LSU opens regional play against some team the Tigers are supposed to beat.
It has come down to this for the Tigers. Just short of an SEC regular-season championship (arguably because South Carolina chose a rain out over playing LSU in Columbia in April), well short of an SEC tournament title. Any and all disappointments will be erased if the Tigers can get to Omaha (winning there is yet another game of chance), but LSU has to do something. There is too much talent on this team, a team led by what is expected to be the top two picks in the major league draft in center fielder Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes to not get there.
Baton Rouge will host the four-team, double-elimination regional at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field beginning June 2nd as this marks LSU playing host to an NCAA Regional for the 27th time and for the first time since 2019. Besides LSU, once again the NCAA Tournament will have a very large Louisiana flair with both Nicholls and Tulane in the post season as well.
The Colonels (34-22) won their first Southland Conference tournament championship since 1998, earning them their first regional appearance in 25 years. While Tulane made national headlines by doing the unthinkable, erasing 3½ months of a frustration-filled season by beating East Carolina 8-6 to win the American Athletic Conference tournament championship.
The Green Wave who came into the tournament 24 games under. 500 under first-year coach Jay Uhlman persevered and shoved those 39 losses which were the most in the history of Green Wave baseball to the back burner. Now, they are moving on with quite possibly the worst record in history to ever enter the NCAA postseason.
The reward for winning the conference title? Now you must travel 75 miles north to Baton Rouge to take on LSU. LSU has ended Tulane’s season three times in regional play, including in 1986 when the Tigers reached Omaha for the first time ever.
Tulane’s only postseason wins over LSU were on back-to-back days in 2001 at then-Zephyr Field, when the Green Wave won a super regional to punch its first-ever ticket to the College World Series. Friday marks the 22-year anniversary of Game 2 of that record-setting weekend. However, like the old saying goes… what is the difference between a dynasty and a wanna be? About 75 miles and 6 National Titles.
The rest of the Baton Rouge Regional field includes No. 2 seed Oregon State, an at-large selection from the Pac-12, and third-seeded Sam Houston State, the Western Athletic Conference tournament champions.
Sam Houston was the lone qualifier from the Western Athletic Conference. LSU last met the Bearkats at the Round Rock Classic on Feb. 26, where it won 16-4. The Tigers defeated Tulane in a midweek game, 11-5, on April 11 in New Orleans.
“Sam Houston, I mean, that’s week two – in the 18–22-year-old baseball player, that might as well have been four years ago, both for our players and for their players,” Johnson said. “With Tulane, it’s a Tuesday at their field. They just came off a great weekend and I watched the game yesterday – they don’t look like the same team. I think there’s a little familiarity that helps, but I will go back and re-work them like we have not played them and look towards where they are today.”
Oregon State is the No. 2 seed in the Baton Rouge Regional and will take on the Bearkats at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Beavers finished the regular season No. 2 in the Pac-12 with a 39-18 overall and 18-12 Pac-12 record. The Beavers have won 27 of their last 37 games and are making their third appearance in the postseason under head coach Mitch Canham. Canham is 7-5 in the postseason.
For the third consecutive year, Louisiana has four teams in the postseason. Southland Conference

Continued from pp. 4, Just Sports champion Nicholls heads to Tuscaloosa to take on No. 16 national seed Alabama in the first round Friday at 6 p.m. While Louisiana @ Lafayette received an at-large berth after the Ragin Cajuns’ run to the final of the Sun Belt tournament. The Cajuns are headed to Coral Gables, Florida, as a No. 3 seed and will meet Texas Friday at 1 p.m. on Longhorn Network.
LSU is one of eight teams from the Southeastern Conference to host a regional, the most by the conference in NCAA baseball history, including: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Tennessee and Texas A&M also qualified for the tournament, but will be on the road for the Regional.
The winner of the Baton Rouge Regional will play the winner of the Lexington Regional, hosted by Kentucky, who is the No. 12 seed in the tournament. Kentucky will host Ball State, West Virginia and Indiana in its regional. LSU’s non-conference schedule also featured Central Connecticut State, Samford, Texas, Iowa, Nicholls State and University of Louisiana, all of which qualified for the tournament. The Tigers will see Sam Houston State and Tulane for the second time this year in its own regional.
Johnson thought that LSU would play Nicholls State after SEC tournament, since it was the Southland Conference champion and within 400 miles of LSU, but the Colonels will head to the Tuscaloosa Regional as the No. 4 seed. He figured the three seed would be Sam Houston or UL, but UL will travel to the Coral Gables regional as the No. 3 seed.
“It’s pretty simple with the four seed: who’s within 400 miles, so we knew it was going to be Nicholls –actually told the team we’re playing Nicholls, having no idea what’s going on in the AAC tournament,” Johnson said. “Once they won, it becomes a 50-50 proposition, and then three seeds, Sam Houston is within 400 miles – if you look on my google maps on my phone, I have a lot of ‘This place to Baton Rouge,’ over the last 24 hours to figure out the possibilities.”

By Paula Johnson
Hi, Everyone!
Hope you are all doing well and have gotten all your Spring cleaning done. Well, I am still working on that. The weather has been so nice most of the time, I am more focused on being outside than inside.
With that being said, my granddaughter, Carlea’, and I went on an adventure. I heard a little about a flower field in Picayune, MS. I really didn’t have much information to go on, so I started asking around. No one I spoke to knew anything about it. Well, I got on the internet and simply typed in flower growers in Louisiana. None showed up but Mississippi did. I asked my granddaughter when her last day of school.was. That worked out perfectly because the day after was my birthday! We made our plans to head to Coastal Ridge Farm. She especially wanted to see and bring home some sunflowers.
The fields of flowers are absolutely beautiful! When we were there the zinnas, bachelor buttons, and sunflowers were beautiful. There were butterflies and bees enjoying the nectar and pollen from the flowers. We had such a great time walking through the different fields of flowers and picking the ones we wanted. There is a fee to enter the fields but that is minimal considering the beauty of the flowers you can pick and bring home. We can hardly wait to go back sometime in June! The flowers in the bouquets I designed are some of the ones we picked at the farm. If you get a chance, look them up on the internet and make plans to visit these fields. You won’t be disappointed. You never know,, You just may see us there.
So what will your next craft project be? Mine....I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun!
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

LAWN CARE
Lawns are now beginning to show spring growth. Be careful not to push the grass by forcing early growth with lots of fertilizer. If fertilizer is put on too early, it will feed winter weeds and not the turf. A good rule of thumb to follow is to mow your lawn twice before fertilizing. Typically this begins in April in the coastal counties and into May moving northward. This is when you should begin to fertilize your lawn. A soil test is recommended to determine your soils nutrient levels.
Fertilizer analyses are listed on the bag as percentages of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Potassium (N-P-K).
In order to convert the fertilizer product you have available into units of nitrogen, divide the desired amount of nitrogen by the percentage of nitrogen found in the product you have available. For example, for most applications you will want to apply 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 ft2, divide the desired 1 pound by the percentage of that nutrient found in the product, .13 in the case of a 13-13-13 product. (1lb N/.13 N=7.69 lbs of actual fertilizer product to equal 1 pound of nitrogen).
Along with fertilizer applications, cutting heights are important for healthy grass. Cutting grasses that need to be left tall is a common mistake. Choose an even higher cut for grass in shade. Sharpen your mower blade before the season and at least once a month while the turf is actively growing to ensure a quality cut which can help prevent disease and insect damage. Replace that old oil with new and stale gas with fresh before you start your mower this spring.
Recommended cutting heights for the different turfgrasses are:
Common bermudagrass: 1½ inches
Hybrid bermudagrass: 1 inches
Zoysiagrass: 1-1½ inches
Centipede/carpetgrass: 1½-2 inches
St. Augustinegrass: 2½-3 inches
For shady areas raise the mower deck another ½ inch for all species

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM
Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459
Capt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!
I have been a bit slow. The calls are not coming in this year like in the past. Gary lives with me when he is not at work. On one of his days off we went out looking at areas I had not been to
in a year or two. The fishing was slow and the water was dirty. We found a few fish. Suddenly this monster hit and gave him a good fight taking him around the boat twice before I could net it.
Red snapper season is open. On opening day it was very windy and many boats did not get out. I went out and struggled but eventually I found my 5 man limit of 15 good ones.
I ran a trip for voo doo fishing Charters. I had 3 guys from texas for this trip. We were too busy to get any pictures. The bite was insane before it shut down. We ended up with 56 beautiful speckled trout and 2 sheepshead in the box when all was said and done.
I also had another two boat trip for voo doo fishing charter. We bounced around finding a few here and there. If you want to get in on some of the action please call me at 504-247-8459.
Life is Good!
ORGANICALLY SPEAKING:
BY: CHRISTINA GEIGER
Why eat organic? You may be wondering what all the fuss is about concerning overpriced organically grown produce when you can pay less to eat its conventionally grown counterpart. I mean, they look basically the same except for that waxy coating. This may seem as if it is the only difference; however, let’s take a closer look.
The way foods are grown and raised can impact both your health and the environment. Organic produce must be grown with specific requirements being met and maintained to be labeled as organic. Organic farmers are not allowed to use synthetic pesticides, GMOs or GEs (genetically modified organisms), petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludge -based fertilizers. Avoiding these toxic chemicals sure sounds like a great reason to include organic produce in your diet.
Organic produce is not exposed to toxic chemicals that can negatively interact with the vitamins, minerals and organic compounds that make them viable for prevention of degenerative disease. By choosing organic produce, you increase the intake of nutritionally desirable antioxidants. Since we live in the South, most of us need plenty of desirable antioxides” because they specifically help promote liver and kidney functions. These organs areresponsible for filtering toxins and waste from our bodies. A 2011 study published in The Academic Journal - “Critical Reviews in Plant Sciences” revealed findings that organic produce contains on average 12 % more health-promoting compounds than conventionally grown produce.
Organic crops contain significantly higher levels of secondary metabolites-compounds that are believed to protect against obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Organic farmers rely on biodiversity to naturally reduce the habitat for pests. They also purposefully maintain and replenish the fertility of the soil. Being from Louisiana, we should certainly be able to appreciate the value of caring for our precious soil.
So why eat organic? Because investing in your health and our local environment benefits us all. Next time you’re out shopping at the Camellia City Market, talk to our local farmers about their farming methods. Spend some time with people like Ernie Berducci, an Amite area grower who has been working his fields for morethan 60 years. Even though they may not be certified due to cost, they may use organic practices. Organic prices at Slidell’s or most community farmer’s markets are the same or less for truly organic fare than the prices you pay at a grocery or specialty store for less than organic produce. You may be inspired to try your hand at a small organic home garden as well.
Use both the farmer’s market and the local grocery to select your choices for organic products because neither one has everything that the other features and it will not only ease the cost of spending more for organic but also give you a chance to learn how you can have a healthier and tastier food lifestyle. Listen to those who understand organic in the grocery stores as well. Try cutting out one comfort food boxed product and add one organic selection per month until you realize the benefits of doing so.
We forget about the wonderful taste of garden grown products, even those grown using some commercial fertilizers and pesticides. Think how much tastier and healthier these items would be coming from your organic garden and/or by switching part of the relatively small portion of your weekly grocery spending on produce to organic. We grudgingly pay double for beef than we paid a year ago; produce, even organic, hasn’t gone up anywhere near that percentage. Everyone will be happier and it remains a win-win situation for all.

Hurricane Tips
June 1 marks the first official day of hurricane season. Although severe weather is expected, we want to make sure we are fully prepared. With that in mind, we want to urge pet owners to create an evacuation plan that includes their pets! Pets are members of the family and should be included in all disaster preparations. Did you know that before Hurricane Katrina, it is estimated that roughly 259,400 families owned pets in New Orleans? Because there was no formal evacuation plan for residents needing assistance or for those with pets, as many as 104,000 pets were left behind. 44 percent of those that chose not to evacuate did so because they refused to leave their pets. Natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods are out of our control. However, planning for a disaster is something we can all do. Just like other members of your household, emergency planning for your pets requires supplies and advance preparation. The supplies you gather should be able to provide for your pet for at least five days.
Are you ready for hurricane season?
• Does your pet have up-to-date vaccines, and do you have copies of your pet’s medical records? All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices will require proof of immunization before accepting pets.
• Are your pet’s ID tags up-to-date?
• Does your pet have a microchip? This is a permanent form of identification that can be your pet’s round-trip ticket home in the event they get lost. Need a microchip? Schedule an appointment at the Louisiana SPCA’s Community Clinic.
• Compile a list of places to go. Consider staying with family or friends outside of the strike zone. Look into pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or boarding facilities.
Evacuation Checklist
• Food and water. Keep food in an airtight, waterproof container. Water for pets should be in addition to the water you need for yourself and your family.
• Medicine and medical records. Keep an extra supply of medicine your pet takes on a regular basis in a waterproof container. All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices require proof of immunization before accepting animals. Collar with ID tag; harness or leash. Your pet should always wear a collar with its rabies tag and identification.
• Documents. Place copies of your pet’s microchip information, registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents, and medical records in a clear plastic bag or waterproof container.
• Crate or some sort of pet carrier. Carriers should be large enough for your pet to stand up, completely turn around and lie down. Mark your name, address, phone number, and an alternate contact on the carrier.
• Sanitation. Include pet litter, newspapers, towels, plastic trash bags, and cleaners in your evacuation bag so you can pick up after your pet.
Orleans Parish residents who require assistance evacuating should register themselves and their pets with the City for the City Assisted Evacuation Plan (CAEP) by dialing 311 or visiting nola.gov/ready. When it comes time to evacuate, if you are planning to stay in a hotel, ensure that they are willing to accommodate pets. Do not bring your pet to the Louisiana SPCA. We do not board pets and will be evacuating the animals in our care in the event of a strong storm. For more information about planning for an evacuation with your pet, visit www.louisianaspca.org/evacuation. If you are a pet owner in Plaquemines Parish in need of evacuation assistance, please preregister with the Plaquemines Parish Health Department by calling 504-934-6690.
