Tony’s Take
It was the year of the Catcher Balk and an uncharacteristic pickoff in a crucial late inning championship game that defined the LSU run to the SEC league championship this year. In one of the rarest baseball scenes ever, LSU was denied a putout at home plate on an unorchestrated steal of home in the 10th inning of their Saturday game against South Carolina. Although the runner was tagged out by Alex Milazzo at the plate, the umpires found a seldom-used rule that forced the run to be counted and all baserunners for South Carolina to advance a base, including the batter. For you see, when LSU’s pitcher threw the ball to Milazzo to prevent the steal, he was not only determined to be on the mound but Milazzo was ruled for interference because part of his body was in front of an area of home plate that extended into fair territory along the third base line. Catcher interference, balk call, all baserunners advance and the batter reaches first base because of the balk vand the batter count (I think….that one is still a little fuzzy to me). But things ended well for LSU when the sieve-like Gamecocks defense allowed balls to elude their third base player committee (many tried the position Saturday; none were found worthy) and reminiscent of 1997’s Warren Morris’s ninth inning historic blast in the College World Series against Miami, Monster Steven Milam of LSU hit a walkoff two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to win the game and put LSU in the championship contest against a very good Tennessee team.
Things did not go well for the Tigers against the Vols. Although the Tigers took the lead on a solo blast by first baseman Jared Jones early in the game, LDSU’s strategy of replacing pitchers after one run through the opponent’s lineup might have cost the Tigers the win after starter Nate Ackenhousen shut down the Vols for three innings and Fidel Ulloa was brought in to replace him. I’ve never understood the metrics of this type of pitching strategy and a Vol slugger who was 0 for 17 in the Hoover series smacked the mustached Ulloa’s first offering over the left-centerfield wall, giving the Vols a 3 to 1 lead. That was the biggest hit of the game as Tennessee collected only one more run. But even with a three-run deficit, the Tigers weren’t finished. Like the eight run deficit against South Carolina the day before, the Tigers clawed back in the bottom of the ninth inning with the help of a low sun and wind and solid shots off the bats of three hitters to put the winning run at the plate with two outs. But it was not to be as the final two outs were strikeouts and the Vols won 4 to 3 and their second consecutive SEC championship.
The Tigers could have made it more interesting in the middle of the game. They had the bases loaded with two outs but with a brilliantly conceived pickoff strategy, Steven Milam was easily picked off first and the Tigers’ threat ended.
Now the Tigers await their postseason destination. With five of the SEC teams chosen to host regionals, it is unlikely LSU will stay that close to home. I would like to see them go to Tucson and face the Arizona foursome for two reasons: One, it would give the Tigers a fresh perspective on the postseason and two it would give their coach a chance to return home where he coached the Wildcats for many seasons before taking the LSU position. Other reasons are: Arizona should be an easier regional for LSU as the Pac 10 champions Arizona aren’t that strong and LSU’s seed as a number two, which they should be, will give the Tigers a chance to play a lesser team and win before any possible matchup with Arizona and also none of the ACC hosts, the nation’s strongest conference behind the SEC, would appreciate LSU coming in and possibly spoiling their party, especially Florida State, where they might wind up.
As for the LSU women: they annihilated Stanford in California Friday night but couldn’t keep the magic going in games two and three as the Cardinals won a shutout Saturday and returned the Friday favor to LSU last Sunday as the Lady Tigers became clawless when it mattered.

SUMMERTIME SALVIAS
It seems as though summer is already here. Our first week of 90° temperatures and its just May. With all of the different species of flowers available for use in Louisiana, some start to struggle when daytime temperatures start averaging above 85° F.
It seems like someone flipped the switch from enjoyable to hot all of the sudden. The Gulf South region has experienced relatively cool springs over the last few years. However, it seems to have kicked that trend during the first week of May. We experienced a couple of days with high temperatures into the low 90s with the “feels-like” temperatures getting close to 100°F. As we get closer and closer to summer, gardeners will be looking to plant flowers that can withstand the brutal onslaught of long, hot summer days and salvia plants fit this description.
The genus Salvia is interesting to study. They are members of Lamiaceae, the mint family, which gives them opposite leaf arrangement and square stems. Botanists have identified three different areas of origination: the Americas, the Mediterranean, and Eastern Asia. Early on, they were primarily used as ingredients in herbal remedies. It wasn’t until the middle of the 20th century where salvias became popular among those who garden for pleasure. Currently, Salvias are gaining popularity in niche gardening designs like butterfly, hummingbird, and pollinator gardening because of the abundance of nectar produced in flowers. If there were one plant that would represent all pollinator plants, Salvias would do it proudly.
Because of their popularity, you will find many species of Salvia available at nurseries and garden centers. Salvia spendens offers some old and new choices. Most are familiar the cultivar ‘Red Hot Sally’, a small compact plant that reaches a height around 12 inches and produces a wonderful show of bright red flowers on spikes. Another series of S. spendens is gaining some attention. The cultivars ‘Lighthouse Red’ and ‘Lighthouse Purple’ are similar in appearance to ‘Red Hot Sally’ but they get about twice the size and offer a second color option. The ‘Lyrical’ series of S. nemorosa is also interesting to note. ‘Lyrical Silvertone’ is special in that it is two toned in color with deep purple and silver flower spikes. It reaches a medium size of 24 inches tall. Salvias can also be used for height in the back of a bed or as centerpieces in the middle of large island beds. S. microphylla ‘Hot Lips’ is a larger growing species. It reaches a height around 36 inches tall and produces gorgeous red and white flowers. S. greggii ‘Flame’ is another larger growing species that reaches a similar height but produces bright red flowers.
Many of the salvias mentioned in the last paragraph will re-seed themselves at the end of the season and return the following year as newly sprouted plants. This is usually a positive characteristic of plants but sometimes re-seeding plants can move around on their own in the garden. The mealy cup sage, S. farinacea, is a root-hardy salvia that will return each year from the previous root system. There are two cultivars planted at the LSU AgCenter’s Hammond Research Station, ‘Henry Duelberg’, a purple selection and ‘Augusta Duelberg’, a white selection.
The salvias listed in this article are only but a few that are sold at local nurseries and garden centers. You’ll have to get out and see what is available near you. Happy Gardening!

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com
Hope you all are doing well. I had a laundry list of things I needed to do on the four days I was off, starting on Friday. Well, to say things didn’t go as planned is putting it mildly. I had been feeling a little down Wed. & Thurs. but nothing I felt I couldn’t handle and could stay on schedule. Well, come Friday morning that all went to pot! I was sitting in the doctor’s office at 8:15!!! I still feel horrible! Severe sinusitis infection and of course allergies! That was NOT what I wanted for my birthday! Needless to say I have been in bed. I decided while I have to get up and take more meds I will make the time to get my column done and back to bed. Lucky for me I had something I was going to share with you later but since I didn’t get to paint this time’s piece we will jump the gun.
I used an 8 X 8 Cradle Board that you can find at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Base coated the piece with Whispering Turquoise, made a wash with a pink, yellow and light purple color. Just kinda dry brushed it here and there to add interest. Add your main character, in my project it is the rooster, and any other elements you may want, and watch it come to life! Remember, if the sun is shining on the right side of your piece, then the shadow (or shading) will always be on the left, the bottom, where things join & meet and the highlighting will be on the right and to the top.
Okay, that’s it for this time. This chick is heading back to bed. Hope you all have a very productive 2 weeks. I am going to concentrate on getting better so I get more done. Won’t be much fun but that’s the plan!
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, a few weeks ago it looked like a lot of us were not going to have much postseason baseball to watch and turn our full attention to softball. However, the state is still very much represented on the diamond and had a heck of a showing on the softball field. Before we dive into those on track for Omaha and the Men’s College World Series, lets recap what the ladies did. Even though LSU got hosed on a ball that hit a Stanford player’s ankle but could not be reviewed. This team had a really good season just 1 win away from the Women’s College World Series.
In my opinion, though the Tigers made it further the Southeastern Lions showed up and showed up more than any team in the state. They not only won their 1st ever conference title, making their 1st ever NCAA appearance and gave that World Series bound Crimson A team all they could handle.
The Lady Lions did it with pride, energy and as a family! Head Coach Rick Fremin, a Belle Chasse native who lost his father earlier in the year, and his team captured the hearts of all the nation during the Regional in Tuscaloosa. With a consistent positive message on camera while the ESPN network made Fremin’s family a highlight of the regional consistently showing his mother, daughters, brother while mentioning that his wife and sister are both on his staff in Hammond.
This was by far the best story of all the regionals that were covered and really made a proud statement of the university, the town, and the state of Louisiana.
Now, onto baseball and although this article is being written before the official bracket is released, we know for a fact that 6 teams will be making an appearance in the post season. Half of those teams are in because of winning their conference tournaments with Grambling, Nicholls & Tulane all hoisting their conference trophies over the weekend. The other three teams, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, and LSU all did enough throughout the year that they will receive at-large bids.
Specifically, the LSU Tigers went from being out of the tournament two weeks ago, to a bubble team last week to squarely in this weekend. The Bayou Bengals are on a heck of a tear recently winning 15 of their last 21 games and almost winning the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The Ragin’ Cajuns won the regular-season title in the Sun Belt Conference but went 0-2 in the conference tournament. They have an RPI of 38.
The Bulldogs shared the Conference USA regular-season crown and got to the title game on their home field in Ruston but lost to fellow league co-champ Dallas Baptist. Tech’s RPI is 31.
LSU should have earned themselves a #2 seed with UL and Tech possibly as a 2 but more than likely 3 seeds. Nicholls could also sneak in as a No. 3 seed thanks to an RPI of 62, while Tulane and Grambling will certainly be a No. 4 regional seed.
Only once before, in 2000, have six schools from Louisiana heard their name called on selection Monday in a single year. While, Six other times, Louisiana has sent five teams to the tournament. The first of those was in 1987, which was the era of the 48-team bracket with six-team regionals sending teams to Omaha. All five Louisiana schools ended up at UNO’s Privateer Park, with LSU defeating top-seeded Cal State Fullerton for the title.
The other five-team seasons were 1988, 1992, 1999, 2005 and, most recently, 2016. Nearby host sites as potential landing spots for most of the Louisiana schools including Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Florida State. While LSU could be paired with Oklahoma State, East Carolina or even out west to Arizona who was surprised with a host site!
Either way, this year’s tournament will have a lot of choices for fans from the Boot to cheer on. I would not be surprised if a couple of the state teams, specifically LSU, Tech and maybe in Nicholls could surprise a few people and move onto the Super Regional round. The boys of summer are ready to roll into Omaha!

MAYOR “ CAN’T” TRELL CONTINUES TO EAT CAKE
New Orleanians just can’t help themselves. In the continuous matchups of inferiors facing off for Mayor, the city’s voters always find a way to pick the lesser of two incompetents. The majority of that city’s so-called leaders could be classified as corrupt, even by Louisiana standards, but LaToya Cantrell is in a league of her own.
Cantrell has taken arrogance and hubris to new levels in a city that has, unfortunately, become a town. The former Californian has carried her carpetbagging efforts into the boudoir and the boardroom, out in the streets and into the various premier airports of the world. Cantrell’s frequent flyer miles must be the envy of most corporate gadabouts; she finds duty calling in the damndest places.
This month’s flavor is a three-day long, Bloomburg-hosted economic forum in Doha, Qatar, probably at the premier Days Inn location in that hardworking country.
This, of course, carries more gravitas than her most recent excursion, a five-day junket to Nantucket, Massachusetts, for a ten-year reunion of the Aspen Institute’s Henry Crown Fellowship program which is touted as a program for business leaders who have “already achieved considerable success in the private sector and are at an inflection point in their lives and careers.” a mouthful of claptrap that clarifies nothing. However, the program for business leaders ostensibly should be for business leaders, not underachieving politicos.
I can just envision an enlightened Cantrell, replete in official Versace attire, leading a rousing round table of benefits gleaned during the past ten years from her experiences following her graduation. As usual, Cantrell’s media secretary, Leatrice Duper, declined to address questions related to the Mayor’s travel, including such minutae as how it would benefit the city and emergency protocols in Cantrell’s absence, which, by the Mayor’s track record, should have been in place shortly after her first hours in office of her first term and shortly before her first departure from New Orleans International.
Now the math. Records show Hurry-on-her has been absent from the City That Care Forget for about one in six days since her first month of her second term last year. That’s 91 days and not even Europeans get that much leisure time. Of course, Cantrell never sleeps in the pursuit of whatever pursuit attracts her to a venue. New Orleans gets to keep this world traveler for another two-plus years, lucky them!
Out of feelings for our Metro neighbors, we have turned to the limerick to summarize the attitude and concern of Cantrell to fellow city officials and her constituents alike. She may read this between the hummus and hubris of her Qatar trip. We’ll let you supply the final verbage.

PROACTIVE GARDENING
Not to date myself too much but, growing up on a truck crop farm in the 80s and 90s, we spent many hours in the summer thinning plants, turning vines, and hoeing rows out. While my grandfather never used the word “scouting” as I recall there were many days, we felt like we were just walking a field with a stick, tossing a few long vines out of a row just so he could keep us out of trouble. Looking back now that may have played a small role in his plans but I have also come to appreciate the things we saw along the way. From removing dead plants that might carry disease, to noticing insect damage that needed attention there were things we found out walking the fields that you don’t find as easily from a bench seat. Those walks helped to plan out spray regimens, harvest time and other activities.
Papaw also made sure to walk the perimeter of fields at random times and random ways that always seemed odd to me. As I have learned from working with clients and my kids at home on their garden projects, that’s a pretty good trick to keeping deer and other wildlife out. If they don’t know your pattern it keeps them guessing a little.
The weather this past few weeks has been awesome with fields and gardens thriving. It’s easy to get busy and catch a quick look as you drive by or notice from a distance while you’re on to something else. But I would encourage you to take some time several days a week to walk your garden, lawn, fields or whatever you may grow. Enjoy your efforts and note progress, pull a few weeds, look for issues such as fungus or disease, scout for insect damage, and just check on things.
From disease to insects, being proactive on catching issues makes treatments and corrections much more efficient. If we can help in any way please contact myself or your local MSU Extension Office.
CHOOSE NATIVE PLANTS FOR YOUR LANDSCAPE
More than 50 species of native plants do well in Mississippi home gardens and yards. Selected types are very hardy and have showy flowers. Black-eyed Susan is the earliest bloomer of this group, flowering as early as late May. The yellow flowers of this plant are beautiful when interspersed with the red and pinkish flowers of bee balms and the lavenders offered by blazing star during June through August. Milkweeds typi-cally bloom from summer through fall, depending on the species. During late August, blooms of narrow leaf sunflower appear and continue blooming through late fall. A palette of color can occur in patches planted with these native wildflowers.
Native plants can add attractive accents to Mississippians’ yards and pro-vide excellent food sources for birds and butterflies. Many native wildflowers, shrubs and vines produce flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies and sphinx moths. Native plants also provide a variety of benefits to gardening enthusiasts such as not requiring watering, fertilization and other maintenance. Because they grow natu-rally in this region, they are adapted to local climate and soil conditions. So, a homeowner can enjoy beauty from native plants and save money on land-scaping costs!

KEEPING YOUR FURRY FRIENDS SAFE: PET TRAVEL TIPS FOR MEMORIAL DAY
As Memorial Day approaches, many families are gearing up for travel adventures. While planning your getaway, it’s crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of your beloved pets. Whether you’re hitting the road or taking to the skies, here are some essential pet travel tips from the Louisiana SPCA to make your journey smooth and enjoyable for everyone, including your furry companions.
Before embarking on your trip, research and book pet-friendly accommodations. Ensure that the hotels or rental properties you choose are welcoming to pets and have necessary amenities like designated pet areas, pet-friendly rooms, and nearby parks for exercise. Prepare a travel kit specifically for your pet. Include essentials such as food, water, bowls, medications, a leash, waste bags, a comfortable bed or blanket, favorite toys, grooming supplies, and vaccination records. Having these items handy will help keep your pet comfortable and stress-free during the journey.
For road trips, use a secure pet carrier or harness restraint system to keep your pet safe while traveling in a vehicle. Ensure that the carrier or restraint is appropriate for your pet’s size and securely fastened to prevent accidents or escapes. Avoid letting pets roam freely in the car, as it can be dangerous for them and distracting for the driver.
During long drives, schedule regular breaks to allow your pet to stretch their legs, use the bathroom, and hydrate. Stop at pet-friendly rest areas or parks where your pet can safely explore and relieve themselves. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle, especially in hot weather, as it can lead to heatstroke or other health issues. Ensure that your pet wears a collar with an up-to-date identification tag containing your contact information. Consider microchipping your pet for added security in case they get lost during travel. Keep a recent photo of your pet on hand in case you need to create a lost pet flyer or report them missing.
Memorial Day weekend is a time for relaxation and bonding with loved ones, including your pets. By following these pet travel safety tips from the Louisiana SPCA, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable journey for you and your furry companions. Remember to prioritize their comfort, security, and well-being throughout the travel experience. Safe travels!
