Back in the days of Paul Mainieri, he, who could explain college baseball better than anyone, the LSU baseball skipper would speak of his less than brilliant staff of pitchers as “Johnny Wholestaff”. LSU’s pitching coaching then was better than its staff as a whole; teams like UCLA, Florida and Vanderbilt had the aces and the relievers and closers to take them to the promised land of Omaha in June.

LSU won their last title in 2009 against Texas and have come close on one or two other occasions. But never in those years since ’09 have the Tigers had four ballplayers that absolutely dominate their sport and rank among the top 25 players in all of college baseball as this year. Never. With Dylan Crews, Paul Skenes, Tommy “Tank” White and Tre’ Morgan, LSU has: the best five-tool major league baseball prospect in at least ten years, the most dominating pitcher coming out of college baseball in at least the last ten years, the most compact, dependable power hitter in the game and the best first base/outfield defender with a reliable bat, bar none.

Too bad none of these superstars will see Omaha. When you have fourteen pitchers and twelve of them are basket cases at least half the time, it’s not a formula for winning your way out of a Super Regional, let alone taking your place among the eight strongest endof-season teams going to Nebraska. I’m so tired of hearing about all these freakin’ injuries to arms that want to throw 98 mph fastballs and over-create their breaking stuff to the point that their arms give out for a season on one pitch that its almost as boring as listening to the Chris Blair “Homer” broadcast of the Tigers and his sound-the-same color analyst.

No great kudos to Coach Johnson either. This team completely abandoned basic baseball, such as the hit and run and stealing and now its Achilles Heel of bad arms and boring offensive strategy is ready to bite them all in the postseason. It used to be that nearly all of the great prep arms that LSU signed in the offseason would sign professional contracts; today, they just turn their future into so much Tommy John surgery while at LSU.

Do yourself a favor and turn off LSU baseball for the rest of the year. Like the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers, they are going to provide an embarrassment that did not have to be. Too much hype, too much broadcast tripe, not enough resources to provide the kind of spirit and sense of fun so many lesser Tiger teams possessed in the past 25 years. And for God’s sake, Blair, work on a better broadcast shtick than “Tigers Win, Tigers Win.” Meh.

STAY HYDRATED, AND YOUR PLANT’S TOO.

During hot summer weather, garden plants utilize more water to manage heat stress just like the human body. Doctors advise drinking plenty of fluids while working outside while at the same time horticulturists recommend supplemental irrigation for our landscape plants. This goes for all types of plants including annual flowers, perennial shrubs, landscape trees, and turfgrass. Now that summertime heat is here, follow the guidelines below for irrigation practices that will help your garden plants survive the summer season.

Use organic mulches in flowerbeds and around trees to insulate the soil and prevent excess water evaporation. There are several different types of mulches available including pine bark, pine straw, colored hardwood chips, and cypress bark. Choose a color and texture that works best with your landscape and apply a 2-3 inch layer to the root zone for maximum effect. The eventual breakdown of organic mulches will provide nutrients and help with compacted soils over time.

Keep a watchful eye on container plantings. Container soil is designed to be very well-drained and will be subject to drying out more often than native soil. A simple water breaker and wind are great tools that allow you to reach in and around potted plants. Thoroughly soak with water until it drains from the bottom of the container.

Irrigation systems can make lifer easier while supplementing irrigation. There are many different types of applicators including drippers, micro sprays, and drip tape. Irrigation systems can be made custom to almost every situation. Applicators that apply water directly to the soil are more efficient than overhead types.

Adjust irrigation systems to run in the early AM. Plants take up more water during the first half of the day than at the end of the day. In addition, watering in the morning allows for excess water to evaporate throughout the day, preventing many disease issues.

Adjust irrigation system frequency to water for longer periods of time, not so often. Deep waterings followed by dry conditions promote expansive root systems, which in turn make plants drought resistant. Short daily irrigation intervals encourage shallow root system and should be avoided. Routinely inspect irrigation systems for leaks and proper working spray heads. Most systems are designed with flushable enclosures. It is a good idea to flush the system from time to time to clear any debris that might have found its way inside.

Check weather forecasts. Watering the garden before a rainfall event can actually improve water penetration into soil. Extremely dry surfaces can become hydrophobic and repel water. Moisten with water to overcome any issues with an extremely dry soil layer.

For more in depth information or help with a specific situation contact your local parish extension agent. Check www.lsuagcenter.com to find contact information for the local extension office in your parish.

Belle Chasse Academy had their annual Boosterthon fun run fundraiser! The Boosterthon program lasted about nine days and included pep rallies, morning meetings, prize giveaways, fundraising updates, and team challenges all leading up to the fun run. Every student was able to participate, the weather was perfect and the students, staff and parent volunteers had a BLAST all while learning more about character traits! It was great to see so many smiling faces. The fun run turned into a COLOR RUN because the school raised their goal of $50,000. Parents and staff members got to throw the color and a great time was had by all!

Well, who would have thought that in the month of May we would continue to talk LSU women’s basketball and not as much on LSU baseball? The baseball team has now lost the past 2 SEC series after not losing any all season. What makes matters worse is that they have lost to bottom feeders Auburn and Mississippi State. Of course, Friday has been well as Paul Skenes continues to dominate the opponents but what has been horrible is the relief pitching. Now, some will blame this on injuries and yes it could be used as an excuse but when you have coaches pulling pitchers after just a few innings because of a big lead it makes no sense.

Now, I am not one to critique Jay Johnson but man some of his pitching calls have been bad…like really, really bad. No reason to panic..yet but if this team does not find some consistent relief pitching than it will be hard to win multiple games in a regional let alone in a super-regional. With that said, let me switch back to the hard wood as the reigning national champion Lady Tigers are riding such a hot-streak that everything or everyone that they touch turns to gold.

What is going on now is unprecedented so let me break it down for you. LSU women’s basketball is here to stay. A program that is fresh off of a National Championship Game victory adds even more fuel to the fire this offseason, bringing in four Top 100 prospects. A class with Mikaylah Williams, Aalyah Del Rosario, Angelica Velez and Janae Kent looks ready to make an impact for the reigning champs. LSU is the only program in the country to sign two Top-10 players this year as they boast the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class.

A look into the class:

Mikaylah Williams

- No. 1 Player in the 2023 Class

As the top player in the country, Williams has had success on every stage she has played on. Playing overseas during the summer, Williams earned two Gold Medals with Team USA, claiming the FIBA U17 World Cup and being named MVP during Team USA’s quest for the championship at the FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup, both in Hungary.

Williams is the reigning Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 22.8 point, 8.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals, leading Parkway High School to a 34-3 record and a state championship appearance. With all-around elite talent, Williams is a natural scorer and lockdown defender whose effort and skill on both sides of the ball separate her from all the other players in the class. As a junior, Williams was a finalist for the 2022 Naismith High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year Award and she was a Junior All-America First Team selection by MaxPreps.

Aalyah Del Rosario - No. 7 Player in the 2023 Class

Del Rosario is a five-star prospect who is the top true big in the country with a powerful inside game who can utilize the face up game. She sees the floor well and can play outside the key too. She is also a physical defensive presence who hits the boards hard. Del Rosario took home the Gold Medal from the FIBA U18 World Cup in Argentina over the Summer.

Angelica Velez - No. 44 Player in the 2023 Class

Velez is high school teammates with Del Rosario as the two have proven to be a lethal guard-post duo, leading The Webb School to the Tennessee Division II-A State Championship as juniors.

Janae Kent - No. 73 Player in the 2023 Class

Kent comes from a basketball family who can score all around the court. She is a two-time South Suburban (Chicago) Conference Player of the Year and was a First Team All-State selection last year. With over 1,000 career points at Oak Forrest High School, Kent averaged 25 points and 9 rebounds throughout her junior season. Basketball is in Kents blood as her father played at Ohio University, mother played at West Virginia and brother is a starter at Bradley.

Now, if this was not impressive enough…not only does LSU have some star-studded returners in Angel Reese: A returning All-American, the MVP of the Tigers’ championship run, and one of the most polarizing figures in college sports right now. Reese averaged 23 points and 15.4 boards last year. A dominant force in the game right now.

Flau’Jae Johnson: The 2023 SEC freshman of the year, Johnson bought in defensively and became an elite wing defender while letting the offense come to her. She will be expected to take a step forward as a sophomore and become more efficient.

Kateri Poole: A huge piece of the title run with her defense, 3-point shooting, and ball handling, Poole is going to once again be a huge piece for the Tigers in 2023 at the guard position. Ended 2022-23 season as the best shooter on the team at 45 percent from deep.

S’Myah Smith: Showed a ton of potential as a freshman last year, especially with her defensive energy. Smith has really nice tough around the rim and was able to step out and hit the mid-range jumper as

Continued from pp. 4, Just Sports well. Another young player who will be even better this year.

Last-Tear Poa: The steady-handed point guard who was able to get LSU into its offense and set up her teammates well. A really good role player that I know Mulkey is excited to get back.

Oh and if that was not enough…all Kim Mulkey did was go into the transfer portal and secure not 1 but the TOP 2 players available in the country!

Hailey Van Lith: One of the premier scorers in the country and the No. 1 player in the transfer portal, Van Lith immediately helps replace Alexis Morris’ offense at the guard position. A fiery competitor who can score from all three levels.

Aneesah Morrow: A third-team All-American selection, Morrow was the No. 2 player available in the portal. Coming off of a season averaging 25.7 points and over 12 rebounds, Morrow adds even more scoring potential to the Tigers’ roster in 2023.

This team is clearly more potent offensively, now with three players who averaged more than 19 points per game last year in Reese, Van Lith, and Morrow. LSU has three of the top 15 players in the country. Around those three you have Williams, Poole, and Johnson who all play their roles. It’s going to be the best offense in the country once they all come together and adjust to each other’s games.

Just like in baseball, the preseason will be a very loud and positive one as LSU will be the No. 1 team in the country entering the season. They no longer will have the underdog role motivating them. They are now the hunted – and the hated. Mulkey has an incredibly challenging task ahead of her, but if she can get this team on the same page, the Tigers will be in position to win it all yet again.

We have some time before we can officially finish the script on LSU baseball team and their prolific roster with quite possibly the Top 2 MLB draft picks. Let’s hope that that will have a happy ending at the end of this story and well anything for LSU women’s basketball is just LAGNIAPPE from here on out!

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Well, this past couple of weeks has been really busy for me. Along with Mother’s Day, my granddaughter attended two more proms, her Junior Prom and that of her boyfriend. So for two weekends in a row I was busy making bouquets for all of those special occasions. It seems as though now, all the young ladies have opted for a hand held bouquet instead of a wristlet. I have not made a hand held bouquet in many years and was a little skeptical about it. But, all in all, I don’t think I did too bad a job. I had fun making them..

The first bouquet I made for my granddaughter had to be a deep red to go with her burgundy colored gown. When I called to order my favorite Black Baracus Rose. But, they did have a rose just a dark called the Heart which doesn’t even look like a traditional rose. The petals are rufflie and even when it is tightly budded, it is still open! Unfortunately, the picture doesn’t do justice to the flowers. They are a Lot darker than the picture shows. At least you can see the ruffled petals. I absolutely Love these roses. They are my new favorites! For accents I added wax flowers and a little limonium, the greenery is Silver Dollar Eucalyptus. I wrapped the stems with a double sided satin ribbon. Did not need any bling, the flowers are beautiful alone.

Well, that’s it for this time. I do have more to show you but that will be for next time. So what will your next project be? Mine.......I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.

UNDERSTANDING WEED & FEED PRODUCTS

Weed & Feed products have been on the market for years. It’s big business. People who have used them for years will swear by them. There are also those who say they don’t work as expected. But are they really being used correctly? When using preor post-emergence herbicides, timing of application is important. Likewise, when fertilizing your lawn, timing is also important. Let’s look at the big picture to see if weed and feed products are right for you.

As part of a preemergence program to control summer annual weeds, preemergence herbicides should be applied in February before lawn green-up occurs to obtain the best results. The problem is, if using a weed & feed, it’s too early to fertilize when preemergence herbicides need to be applied to control many of the weeds listed. One well-known company sells more weed & feed products than any other. Their product with crabgrass preventer contains 30% nitrogen. Many other weed and feed preemergence products also contain at least some nitrogen. You know that nitrogen is a growth element so, here’s the dilemma: Do you apply the product early while the grass is still dormant or semi-dormant to control the weeds? Or do you wait until it’s time to fertilize when the lawn is greening up which is after many of these weeds have emerged? Simply put, the timing of applying some weed & feed products together don’t always work in one’s favor.

So, are they really being used correctly? The answer can be both yes and no. There are weed & feed products that can be applied at the correct time and serve both purposes. Those products contain a post-emergence herbicide, such as 2,4-D, for controlling some existing broadleaf weeds and the label may read “apply before weeds mature”. Again, it’s all about the timing, but these don’t always help prevent weed seeds from germinating. You should not use post-emergence (weeds have emerged) herbicides while the lawn is transitioning from dormancy to green-up. The labels will be specific about timing.

In the early spring and fall, it may be best to apply your weed control and fertilizer separately. Apply a pre-emergence herbicide for summer annuals in late winter or early spring, then fertilize later. Then add another preemergence application in late August or early September for winter annuals. You may even want to add a weed and feed AFTER a couple of lawn cuttings to improve control of weeds and get that first fertilizer application down. Our lawns in south Mississippi are well on their way towards dormancy and growth is subsiding towards the end of August, so if you’re thinking of applying a weed and feed in the fall, there’s really no need. It is a waste of money. A soil test will indicate if there is a need for potassium, which is the best element to apply (Muriate of Potash) for providing winter protection.

Read the label before purchasing a product to be sure it’s labeled for your turf type. Companies may change a formulation on occasion, so even if it’s a product you’ve used many times, check the label again before you purchase! In 2015, Scott’s Bonus S Weed & Feed changed its formulation from Atrazine to Metsulfuron-methyl (MSM). MSM can be used safely on St. Augustine and centipede grass when applied according to label directions. However, it will damage carpetgrass. Our centipede lawns have a lot of carpetgrass and many centipede lawns in our area had thin spots as a result. Scott’s quickly changed back to the original formulation, Atrazine. Be sure to read the label and remember, more is NEVER better!

Scott’s Bonus S requires both turf and weeds to be actively growing.

Ferti-lome Centipede Weed & Feed can be used on all our grass types but it contains a post-emergence herbicide only.

Scott’s Halts Crabgrass Preventer contains a preemergence only and is ok to apply in both early spring and fall. If you plan on seeding, don’t use this or any other preemergence herbicide.

My first drop was in 1,000 feet of water.  Got a bite almost instantly. It was a 7 foot shark. At least I know the setup can handle some big fish. Joe has a big one on that gets hung up in the rig. He fights it back and forth and eventually he gets it in. It is a double.

We both landed some monster red snapper. They were released using a tool that brings them downtown a set depth and releases them unharmed. He also got another snowey grouper.

I got some brotulas and many other different fish. We ended

HOW TO NAVIGATE YOUR KITCHEN

Cooking a Steak Indoors

Gary and I went scouting. We covered a lot of ground. I burned about 40 gallons of gas that day. We never had a bite till after 2:00. We brought back 6 reds and 1 trout in about an hour. We also lost 1 trout that came unhooked on the way to the boat and we lost 6 good reds. One tangled in a crab trap, and 3 ran into the canes and broke off. The other 2 just came unbuttoned after a good fight.

It is that time of year again. The days are longer, giving you time to sneak in an after work fishing trip. Cooking and gatherings in the kitchen give way to spending afternoons outside on the patio with spatula in hand and the sweet smell of charcoal in the air. It takes at least two people to operate a grill. One to do the actual cooking, usually the host, and one to tell him or her what he or she is doing wrong. The latter is usually a guest. For most it is a tradition to grill or bbq at least one meal a week on the grill. Yes, summer and early fall are the seasons for the outdoors here in south Louisiana. Unfortunately summer is also the season for rain. It never fails, you go to the grocery and pick out your favorite cut of steak, invite your closest friends (including the guy who is the arm chair chef) and get the coals just right when the sky opens up and forces everyone inside. Everyone has experienced this but a little rain has yet to ruin a party in this part of the world and contrary to popular belief you CAN cook a good steak indoors. In fact you can cook a steak just as well indoors as you can outdoors on a grill. I have no grill at the restaurant and all of my steaks are cooked in the manner in which I will describe.

Preparing the pan

The key here is heat. Having a very hot pan allows you to sear the steak in order to seal in the juices and give it texture. The texture of a pan seared steak is something you can not duplicate on the grill and is in my opinion a huge advantage. Set your oven at 400 degrees and place your favorite cast iron skillet or any sauté pan inside while you season your steak with your favorite spices or marinade, the latter of which I do not recommend for this cooking process (more on this later). Let the steaks come up to room temperature. Putting a cold steak in the pan can drop the temperature and compromise your texture and flavor. A cast iron pan works the best, but any pan that will go into the oven will work. Those of us who still have grandma’s old cast iron from the depression are lucky. If you don’t, you may want to keep an eye out for one at yard sales, estate sales, or even a pawn shop. You want to eventually have a pan that is well seasoned.

Searing the steak

When you are ready to cook remove the pan from the oven and place it on the stove top on very high heat. Put whatever you use for fat in the pan, just enough to coat the bottom. I use a mixture of olive, pomace oil and canola oil but you may use whatever you like from vegetable oil to bacon fat. Do not use virgin or extra virgin olive oil as their smoke point is too low for this process and you will be able to taste it when it burns. Once you see a wisp of smoke rise from your pan go ahead and sear the fat edge of the steak. This process will melt some of the extra fat and impart flavor. Once the fat edge is brown put your steak flat in the pan. If you have decided to marinate your steak, make sure to dry it off very well. Too much moisture in a hot pan can start a fire and if your marinade contains sugar, like Worcestershire, it will burn before the steak is done. Let the steak sear until you have a nice consistent dark crust. Flip the steak over, repeat the process and adjust the heat to a manageable level if you see that it starts to burn. This is YOUR fire so don’t be afraid to take control. Do not over crowd the pan as it will lower the cooking temperature and you will not get a good sear.

Cooking to temperature

For those of you who like your steak rare, you are finished unless you have a very thick cut like a filet. When you are finished searing all your steaks, put the sheet pan in the oven and finish cooking to desired temperature. Always let your steaks rest for a few minutes. This will allow the juices to settle down so it does not bleed onto your plate when you cut into it. One of the biggest advantages of this technique is that you now have a great foundation for a pan sauce that you cannot get from grilling, but that is a subject for a different column.

Heat Tips

Summer is here, which means hot days are rolling in. Just like humans, our pets can get overwhelmed by heat and suffer from heat stroke if not taken care of. This week, we will go over some tips for keeping your pet cool as well as what you should do if you see a pet in a hot car.

As a general rule, if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pet. Pets can be prone to heat exhaustion and heat stroke if not properly cared for and if they are left outside too long. Dogs do not have the ability to sweat, so keeping them cool is one of the most important things you need to do for your fur baby in the summer months.

Keeping your pet cool can be done in a variety of different ways. Allowing them to play in a pool or giving them dog popsicles are some great ways to help your furry friend beat the heat. Apart from those, ensuring your pet is not outside for too long can keep them from overheating and prevent them from getting sunburnt. When taking your dog for a walk, check the temperature of the concrete. If it is too hot for bare feet, then it is too hot for dog paws!

If your pet begins to display signs of overheating such as panting more than usual, lethargy, drooling, or dark red gums, get to your vet as soon as possible. If making it to the vet may take a bit, try cooling your pet down by gently rubbing an ice pack on them, massaging their legs, or even cooling them off with cool water from the garden hose. The most important piece of advice for saving your pet’s life though is getting them to the vet in a timely manner.

Whether you are running inside somewhere for 5 minutes or an hour, leaving your pet in a car that is turned off is never acceptable. Cars heat up much faster than most people realize, and they can reach temperatures above 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. If you see an animal in a parked car that is turned off, there are some steps you can take to get the animal out without facing legal repercussions.

1.Call out for the owner of the animal and make a good attempt to find them.

2.Call the local fire department, police department, or animal control agency.

3.Ensure the car is locked and there is no other way to get in.

4.Use reasonably necessary force to enter the car and grab the animal.

5.Place a note on the windshield explaining where the animal can be found, your reason for entering the car, your contact info, and that the authorities have been contacted.

6.Stay with the animal until the owner or authorities arrive to take the animal out of your care. Keeping a pet from overheating can save their life, so ensuring they are cool can prevent any harm from happening to them. START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Kittens are here! If you want to attract attention, a litter of kittens is a great way to get a little crowd to gather around. People love to see them, pick them up, cuddle them and watch them play. However, when you ask for help caring for them, there are few interested in doing that. Why do we have so many of these little animals with no one to provide them with food or shelter? It is sad to see so many homeless kittens. There are simply not enough homes for all of them. Many end up abandoned on the street, trying to survive. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization to find out how you can help.

At $125 for a 1/2 page or $250 for a full page, complete color ad message, the cost is less than two-tenths of a penny for the 1/2 page and less than four-tenths of a penny for the full page. You will reach 43 to 86 times as many households/businesses for your dollar than direct mail costs with a bigger, cleaner and easier to read message than on newsprint with no print production costs.

MY EMAIL clients also get the benefit of non-emailed Metro Plus readers, who can go directly to the Metro Plus website, printmediaplus.com which was promoted in the newsprint version of Metro Plus and on the rack signs at the physical locations where it was distributed prior to MY EMAIL.
