Take WE

This Sunday is Easter, the most holy Christian holiday, celebrating the ascension of Christ from his tomb. The Lady Tigers created their ascension this past Sunday in Dallas with a record-setting 102 to 85 victory over Iowa and the best collegiate basketball player of the 2022-23 season, man or woman, in Caitlin Clark. No religious disrespect, but heaven on earth was achieved for thousands of LSU fans who probably thought they were watching an NBA game the way three-point buckets were made. LSU made 9 of 12 in the first half. Find me an NBA team that EVER hit 75% of their 3-point shots in a half.

LSU used an offense brighter than Coach Kim Mulkey’s wardrobe and a defense they already had to put away an experienced, confident team that oddsmakers said would win by 3 or 4 points. Take away a three-minute case of Big Game jitters that caused three quick turnovers by the Tigers and a strong third quarter performance by Iowa that cut a 17-point lead down to 11 with ten minutes to go and this one was all Lady Tigers.

Iowa got in foul trouble early and often and two of their senior starters fouled out in the fourth quarter with Clark also having four fouls. No LSU player fouled out and the Tigers gave their best performance of the year…..and maybe ever….with a beatdown of a team that two days prior had sent the sometimes irascible Dawn Staley and her Tall Tree, Deep Forest, undefeated South Carolina roster, packing. In that game, won by Clark and her teammates, America got to see what women’s college basketball has become: an athletic, entertaining, well-strategized game worth as much….and in this case, much more, than the men’s title game, which far fewer people watched on Monday night because it pitted a couple of good but not great teams, well-coached but not exciting squads in Connecticut and San Diego State. Who won that game? Who, outside of La Jolla and Hartford, cared?

LSU wound up 34 and 2, the best college basketball team in the county, male or female. They caught a break by not being bracketed with South Carolina in a semifinal game but South Carolina wouldn’t have beaten LSU last Sunday. Hell, Denver and Milwaukee would have both had their hands full if the Tigers had played those NBA-leading squads on April 2nd.

I could go on for paragraphs about this remarkable game but most of that you have already received from the rehashes on radio and television. Instead, I leave you with a Tony Special…a remake of a classic pop hit from one of the Rat Pack members from the 1960’s and 1970’s.

LDWF Agents Cite Two Men for Littering in Plaquemines Parish

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two Belle Chasse men for alleged litter violations in Plaquemines Parish on two separate occasions. Agents cited Gabriel Menendez, 20, on Jan. 29, and Justin Vernon, 38, on March 10, for gross littering. Agents located two stripped down personal watercraft that were dumped on Walker Road in Belle Chasse. During the investigation, agents were led to Menendez and he admitted to dumping both personal watercraft.

TIMELY ADVICE ON AZALEAS

Now that azalea plants have finished their big spring bloom it’s now time to perform a few maintenance steps so they can look amazing for the rest of the year. Whether you grow indica azaleas, native azaleas, Robin Hill azaleas, or encore azaleas, there are always a few things to do that help with their appearance and overall health.

Pruning is the first thing that most think of when “maintaining” their azalea plants. That is because you see immediate results and you get to use cutting tools. Its time to pull out those hand pruners, bypass loppers, and pruning saws from the tool shed. Inspect your tools to make sure they work properly. Sharp blades make clean cuts and clean cuts heal faster. Make it a habit to sharpen the blades on cutting tools prior to each use.

When making pruning cuts on azalea plants, there a few guidelines to follow. Pruning needs to be done as soon as the spring flowering period is over. Other azalea types, especially the re-blooming types, set flower buds constantly and can be pruned as needed during the summer months. Indica Azaleas are a little different and produce next year’s flower buds 6-8 weeks after the spring bloom. Make it easy and prune all azaleas in the landscape at this time.

First thing should be to look for broken, diseased, or damaged stems. Remove damaged pieces by following the stem back to where it originates and cut it out. Next, look for those long shoots that seem to skyrocket above the plant. This can be done using hedge sheers, but I find you can get a much more natural look when removing these shoots individually with hand pruners. You can remove 25 to 35% of the total plant during this step. Think about how tall the bush should be in its current situation to help guide you during the process. Prune lower that the ideal height to allow the plant to grow into your desired sized. For overgrown plants that need more than 25 to 35% removed, aim to accomplish in multiple years to mitigate plant stress.

Fertilizing should always be applied directly after pruning for immediate use by the plant. Plants respond to pruning by growing, making it important for the plant to grow in a fertile soil. If a soil test analysis is available, look for deficiencies and supplement with an appropriate soil amendment. In situations where there is no soil report to use, then use one of the general azalea, camellia, and rhododendron fertilizers at the labeled rate. Once the fertilizer or amendment product has been added, water it either by hand, with the irrigation system, or time the application before a natural rain event.

While pruning and fertilizing may be some of the more popular maintenance steps related to azaleas, pest management is needed form time to time. Azalea Lace Bug damage shows up during the summer months as discolored leaf surfaces with insect signs on the lower surfaces. Red-headed Azalea Caterpillars show up later in the year but can devour foliage at an inopportune time. Both can be managed using a systemic insecticide like imidacloprid. Just make sure to read and follow the pesticide label on whatever product you decide to use. Azalea Leaf Gall show up in the spring as weird tumor like growths on new leaf tissue. It is caused by a fungal organism and happens quite often in humid climates. Collecting these strange growths and throwing them out with the trash will reduce inoculum, preventing reinfection, and it’s our top recommendation on prevention. If you see something strange going on with an azalea plant and its not described in this article, feel free to reach out and request help from your local extension office.

The Intro Art II students were introduced to the work of Jen Stark who creates vibrant colorful abstract murals. After observing and discussing the artist’s work the students each came up with individual sketches for a mural in the art room. Together, they combined their ideas into one plan. The students drew the sketch on the wall and outlined it with marker. Each student chose and mixed a color of paint to be used in the mural. The girls worked many hours, including lunch periods, to paint and outline the mural. Through the pain of tired arms from reaching up, crouching under tables for the low parts, cleaning up lots of brushes and paint mishaps, stretching under and over each other to work, and eating lunch really fast, the mural that was started in January has finally been completed!! Great job ladies, it looks fantastic!

McBride hold up their individual ideas which were incorporated into the finished mural.

The Belle Chasse Academy Louisiana History Day Competition students represented BCA at the Regional Louisiana History Day Competition at the WWII Museum. Six of the seven BCA students placed and are eligible to compete at the State Louisiana History Day Competition. The top two projects from each category at State will advance to the National Competition at The University of Maryland – College Park in June 2023.

Jackson Kline (6th) , Carter Bostic (6th), and Francisco Gumataotao (7th) placed first in performance with “The Experiments of MK ULTRA.” Eighth grader Henry Stewart entered his exhibit, “How Germany Revolutionized the Use of Tanks in WWII.” Pictured are seventh grader Jason Jackson, who placed 4th with his paper “Integration Within Education,” seventh grader Sarah Blair, who placed 2nd with her paper, “Assembly Line Frontiers,” and seventh grader Jude Shadden, who placed 2nd with his exhibit “Andrew Higgins: A Frontiersman.” Jude also received a $75 cash award for having the Best Louisiana History-themed entry.

Well, history has been made. No. 3 LSU wins the 2023 NCAA national championship, its first in the sport of men’s or women’s basketball! The Tigers became just the third No. 3 seeded team to win the title and the first since 1997.

Kim Mulkey wiped away tears with under a minute remaining in the NCAA women’s basketball championship game Sunday afternoon. All eyes focused on her, in part, because they couldn’t help it as she strode the sideline in a head-to-toe, sparkling, gold-and-black, tiger-striped pantsuit that twinkled with every movement.

When the final buzzer sounded, Mulkey became the first women’s basketball coach to lead two different programs to a national championship, bringing one to her home state of Louisiana in just her second year at the helm of LSU. The never shy 60-year-old now has four titles after winning three at Baylor. The Tigers ran away from No. 2 Iowa to take a 102-85 victory in front of a sold-out American Airlines Center crowd of 19,482. LSU blasted off in the second quarter to outscore the Hawkeyes 32-20. The Tigers knocked down nine of their 11 3-pointers. The Tigers beat the best offense in the country at their own game and put up the most points ever in a championship game. The 102nd point came on— none other than — their final 3-pointer.

LSU put on an absolute shooting clinic in the first half to go into halftime with a 59-42 lead that had their fans screeching “L-S-U! L-S-U!” The Tigers typically do their offensive work from the inside, but the Bayou Barbie Angel Reese picked up two fouls and went to the bench while her teammates picked up the slack in a matter that had the sold-out crowd in awe.

Jasmine Carson topped LSU in scoring with a season-high 22 points. Carson blew up after scoring just 13 points in the entire tournament leading up to the championship game. With a 15-point, 10-rebound performance Reese notched the most double-doubles (34) in a single season.

Carson had her LSU teammates sprinting off the bench after she banked in a buzzer-beater before the half, her 21st point of the game. She was 5 for 5 from three-point range coming off the bench in the first half. Mulkey even joined in, running off the sideline with both arms raised to the sky.

LSU shot 9 for 12 from behind the arc in the first half with four different players ripping the twine. The season high for three-pointers by the Tigers was 11 and just two games ago, in the Elite Eight, LSU beat Miami, 54-52, while shooting 1 for 12 from long range.

Five players scored in double figures for LSU with LaDazhia Williams posting 20 points, Jasmine Carson adding 22 and Alexis Morris posting 21.

Caitlin Clark scored a game-high 30 points setting a new record for points scored in a single NCAA tournament. Clark’s spectacular run ends with the Associated Press player of the year award, but without a national championship. She finished with 30 points and eight assists and broke Sheryl Swoopes’s single-tournament points record that had stood since 1993 with 191. She also set the tournament three-point record with 32. Monika Czinano scored 13 but fouled out with 6:25 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Hawkeyes attempted to rally.

The Tigers scored 26 points off 19 Hawkeye rebounds. LSU’s bench also outscored Hawkeyes 30-8 led by Carson.

Mulkey took the program from nine wins in 2020-21 to 26 in her fist year, to winning it all in year No. 2. She bolstered the roster through the transfer portal with Reese, formerly of Maryland, leading the way. The Baltimore native set the LSU and SEC single-season rebounding record after initially planning to transfer to Tennessee or South Carolina, but went for a recruiting trip with Kateri Poole, fell in love and canceled all other trips. Less than a year later, Reese was named the tournament’s most outstanding player and has a ring while setting the NCAA single-season double-double record with 34. She finished Sunday’s game with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Mulkey is now third all-time in NCAA history in national championships won. Only Geno Auriemma (11) and the late Pat Summitt (8) have more.

Not only is this a national title for athletics but a major media windstorm for the university. The LSU team developed into celebrities over the season, getting calls from Lil Wayne during the tournament and getting neon green Kobe 6 Protos — nicknamed Grinches after the Dr. Suess character — from Kobe Bryant’s widow Vanessa.

It was stated by yours truly when the opening came about that a Kim Mulkey hire would transform this program into a national name. Now, did anyone think it would happen in year 2, absolutely not! What a great time to be an LSU Tiger alum, student or a fan. An LSU title is always for the state of Louisiana and boy does it feel good. This program is here to stay and will only get better!

Tony’s Take

7 BILLION BEATS. IT’S TIME FOR A NEW FUEL INTAKE VALVE.

They told me I had a murmur. Not my voice. My heart. I really didn’t understand it as a kid nor did I care. I had no restrictions, had the usual kid’s energy and its bulletproof view of life, played competitive sports. Then my family doctor recommended a cardiologist who wanted to give me a procedure called a catheterization. Said they’d be running a tube into my vein and shooting dye into me to see how my blood flowed. What they found was enough to keep me out of playing college ball and ultimately, out of ’Nam during the Tet Offensive of 1968, where I projected to serve as a newly minted Marine second lieutenant, mere months out of Pendleton and OCS.

Fast forward 60 years. My murmur had become a tricuspid valve defect, where the major valve of your aorta doesn’t close properly, increasing the number of beats your heart creates to register one beat on your blood pressure reading. I was told after Katrina to see a cardiologist on a regular basis and was put on a blood thinner and became a regular patient. My blood highway system remained virtually traffic-free but the aortic stenosis (valve defect) created an aneurism (artery wall swelling) in my aorta and my original High Quality, Heavenly Installed, factory fuel pump (my heart), frustrated by working with less than an OEM quality intake valve, (my tricuspid valve), ordered a new intake valve be installed to ease the heart’s extra workload and remain strong.

Installation was supposed to be done by a minimalist invasive procedure called a TAVR, where a robotic control would transport a new valve assembly to drop in and fit over the old….sort of like our situation on our Southern border, except no politics. Except for that darn aneurism! Thing was causing a stress situation on a critical curve section of the main inbound blood highway and doctors said they didn’t want any chance of a collision using the TAVR procedure or actually, even leaving the aneurism in place, which could lead to future problems.

Change of plans. Open up the engine compartment, (Open Heart surgery), do the valve replacement, bypass or eliminate the aneurism using a Dacron material as a new section of aortic highway, throw in a Maze procedure to virtually eliminate Atrial fibrillation and voila! new intake valve and little chance of a-fib in the future. New fuel intake, voltage regular modification (Maze procedure) and elimination of possible highway collapse (bye, bye, aneurism).

I’ll be out for mid-April and my Draconian cardiologist team will make sure I’m up and moving so I don’t miss a beat with y’all. Although I will be missing a lot of beats moving forward, with a new

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hope everything has been going well for you, you are loving our crazy weather and looking forward to the Easter Holiday and spending time with children and grandchildren on Spring break. Things have been crazy for me and my family the past couple of weeks and we are just trying to adjust to the new situation.

As you can see, I have not completely finished my Gnome and Chicks Easter project. I was hoping to complete that yesterday but, life got in the way and I was needed elsewhere. We all know, family comes first. But, I will hopefully have this completed this week. I must admit, this is a time consuming piece but I am enjoying this project. It is bringing sanity back into my life. This is an internet class I have been taking from a very talented artist. I love her painting style. Everything is fun, happy, and carefree. I will share this with you when I finish it. If you would like you will be able to see it ahead of time on my FB page, We Can Do That Arts & Crafts. Time permitting, I should have him up by the end of the week. I hope you all have a Very Blessed and Happy Easter!

So what will your next project be?

Mine.....I am not sure. But I know it will be a lot of fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

valve that understands its function and allows the heart to work in the efficient way God intended. And the Maze procedure will have my heart working virtually free of any craziness (a-fib). Giving up six weeks of driving is the toughest price I’ll pay although the nearly immediate improvement of my cardiology should more than compensate for my recovery trials. Think of it! I’ve never had a heart whose teammates have played as effectively as it has my entire life. And now they’re getting the band back together, so to speak. PECAN PHYLLOXERA

Gall producing insects are very common in our landscape but maybe none more prevalent than the Pecan Phylloxera. Pecan phylloxera is one of the most common insect pests of pecans (Carya illinoinensis) but may also affect other species in the Carya genus such as hickory. Pecan phylloxera are small yellow insects that look very much like aphids. We seldom see them because they are encased inside the galls that they cause to form on stems and nuts. The pea- to marble sized, knot-like galls these insects cause make them easy to identify. Pecan phylloxera overwinter as eggs in cracks and crevices on limbs and branches. Egg hatching coincides with leaf bud break in the spring, and the young nymphs immediately crawl to the developing leaf buds and begin feeding. Their feeding affects the growth of the leaf tissue, causing the formation of the hollow, knotty galls that encase the feeding nymph. These galls cause severe deformation of developing twigs and nuts.

On heavily infested trees, more than 70 percent of the new terminal tissue can be affected, resulting in trees that are unsightly and unproductive. Fortunately, outbreaks of pecan phylloxera are somewhat cyclic, and trees may experience heavy infestations for a year or so, followed by several years of low populations. Pesticide treatments will not be effective after the protective gall forms around the insect. To be effective, treatments, such as Sevin, must be applied as soon as leaf buds begin to break in the spring and b efore there is more than 1 inch of new leaf growth.

STINGING NETTLE

4BR, 2BA Doublewide trailer, 37536 Howard O’Berry Road Extension. $1200/ month, $1200/deposit. 1 year lease. No pets! Call 504-621-0097.

Over the past few years, we have been getting more and more questions about a plant seen growing in many areas this time of year that causes a painful, burning irritation to the skin if touched. This plant is called stinging nettle.

Stinging nettle (Urtica chamaedryoides) is a winter annual that is commonly seen in late winter and early spring. While there are some medicinal uses for this plant it is often considered a weed. It can be found in pastures, livestock pens, around buildings, and in shaded areas of lawns. Each plant has hundreds of tiny, barbed hairs on it that easily embed in the skin when touched. They contain a toxin that can cause severe irritation that can last for hours. It can cause a burning and stinging sensation wherever it contacts your skin. It can cause problems with animals also if they come in contact with it.

Stinging nettle can be difficult to control, but there are options. Mowing does not help control this weed and can spread it to other areas if seeds are developed. Cultural Control options are mostly limited to digging out roots and rhizomes. Avoid contact with foliage and stem pieces; wear gloves and clothing when removing. 2,4-D gives little to no control of this weed alone. Glyphosate, applied as a spot treatment, does not always provide effective control either. Combination selective postemergence herbicide products that include triclopyr, 2,4-D, 2,4-DP, MCPA and dicamba are usually more effective than other combinations or when used separately. Repeat applications of herbicides may be needed. If left untreated, stinging nettle will usually die off in May as the weather starts to warm up.

Dog Fighting Awareness Day

National Dog Fighting Awareness Day is on Saturday, April 8th this year. Though it may be recognized on one single day, this form of cruelty is something that happens year-round.

National Dog Fighting Awareness Day attempts to encourage dog and animal lovers to act against and bring awareness to one of the cruelest forms of animal abuse: dog fighting.

Not only is dog fighting a felony in all 50 states, but dogs that are forced to participate in dog fighting often suffer extreme physical and mental abuse. Often, dogs that are used in dog fighting are kept chained up or in cages with little access to basic necessities until they are thrown in a pit and forced to fight. In the cruel world of dog fighting, it is kill or be killed. The losing opponent often does not receive any type of veterinary care and is left to pass away alone. These poor animals are used as nothing more than entertainment and deserve to live much better lives than they are allowed to. Often, animals subjected to dog fighting have their ears cropped or tails docked in inhumane ways in order to hide the dog’s body language or reduce the areas the other animal could grab.

Dog fighting is illegal in every state, but tens of thousands of people still ignore the laws, and the animal’s needs so they can make money or be entertained. Dog fighting is often associated with other illegal activities such as illegal gambling, drugs, and firearms. Spotting the signs of potential dog fighting rings could be key in saving countless animals’ lives and giving them the chance at a better life. Looking for signs such as cropped ears or docked tails, dogs on heavy chains or tethered up, dirt rings around where the dog is being kept, or dogs chained inches apart from one another can be the first step in stopping dog fighting.

If you suspect dog fighting in your area, please report it to 911 so that a Humane Law Enforcement Officer and local authorities may investigate. If you suspect any type of animal cruelty or have concerns about an animal’s wellbeing, please also call 911 so that authorities may check on them. Taking the step to report something out of the ordinary can be the difference between saving an animal’s life. We need our community to keep their eyes and ears alert to the animal cruelty that may be happening.

No dog deserves to go through each day fearing for their lives, and the cruel and inhumane “sport” of dog fighting is one of the worst forms of animal abuse. It is up to each of us to put a stop to this cruel and inhumane punishment unfairly cast upon these helpless animals.

Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Five adorable rescued kittens ready for adoption to loving homes! All have been spayed/neutered, tested and vaccinated. They have been cared for in homes where they have been able to interact with their foster family and play with other kittens and pets. If they had not been rescued, they might not have survived, or they might soon be producing more homeless kittens. Join us in helping stop this cycle and reduce the number of homeless animals living on the street. Contact START if you would like to adopt, donate or volunteer. We need your help.

It’s 1/2 page or larger sized ads command readership in messages that require recipients to respond in a timely manner, every two weeks, when Metro Plus is published.

It reaches 60,000 emailed homes in your regional trade area once every two weeks.

It enters households with a threshold income of $60,000 to those with over $100,000 annually.

At $125 for a 1/2 page or $250 for a full page, complete color ad message, the cost is less than two-tenths of a penny for the 1/2 page and less than four-tenths of a penny for the full page. You will reach 43 to 86 times as many households/businesses for your dollar than direct mail costs with a bigger, cleaner and easier to read message than on newsprint with no print production costs.

MY EMAIL clients also get the benefit of non-emailed Metro Plus readers, who can go directly to the Metro Plus website, printmediaplus.com which was promoted in the newsprint version of Metro Plus and on the rack signs at the physical locations where it was distributed prior to MY EMAIL.
