Tony’s Take

JOHNSTON’S PASSING LEAVES FEWER UNITERS IN AMERICA

The death of former U.S. Senator J. Bennett Johnston last week closed the chapter of American politics where legislators from all backgrounds worked together for the common good. Johnston lived in Shreveport during the civil rights era of the early ’60’s until the end of the Jimmy Carter presidency in 1980. It was a dual time of postwar Russian aggression and unrest on the domestic front as America entered a new time when women, Blacks and alternate lifestyle practitioners began to have meaningful input into shaping the American Dream.

I was an on-air newsman at KEEL radio in Shreveport, one of two 50,000 watt stations when AM radio still ruled the roost. One special report I did was the future construction of a vital north-south highway from Shreveport to New Orleans. Johnston was a proponent of the project and he and I met while I prepared the special piece. He had been a roommate and law partner with Jim Reeder, a Shreveport resident. Reeder was the managing partner of KOKA Radio, a black-formatted station in Shreveport and a man I would wind up working for six years later. Johnston was one of the new wave of Democrats who were emerging to run Louisiana following the passing and peaks of Senators Allen Ellender and Russell Long and Congressmen F. Edward Hebert and Hale Boggs Junior. Beaten by former U.S. Representative Edwin Edwards, Johnston was a bit premature in seeking the Governorship of Louisiana in this new decade. But his political war chest was brimming in the early ’70’s as he ran for and won the Senate seat of Ellender following Ellender’s death in 1972.

Johnston was instrumental in guiding Louisiana through the turbulent ’70’s. His calm demeanor and lack of a demagogue’s passion worked hand in glove with now Governor Edwards, whose Cajun infused personality was the perfect counterpoint to Johnston’s more businesslike attitude. Johnston’s four terms as Senator were highlighted by his passion to reduce energy costs and bring projects to the Pelican state. He worked well with both Democrats and Republicans, serving under Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush the Elder and Clinton before retiring in the late 90’s. Today, I-49 stands as a tribute to Johnston who also worked closely with former U.S Senator John Breaux, who served as Louisiana’s junior senator during part of Johnson’s 24 years in Washington.

OKRA

It is that time of the year to plant okra. Here are some tips for how you can grow your own okra and enjoy these hot-weather vegetables for months to come.

Okra prefer sandy soil with good drainage and high in or-ganic matter, but will tolerate a wide variety of soils. Soil pH should be between 6.06.8. If the soil is too acidic, okra pods will not develop properly. Before planting, make sure to have the soil tested at your local Extension office.

Some popular okra varieties are Clemson Spineless, Annie Oakley, Burgundy, and Cajun Delight. Okra prefers to be planted in a very sunny lo-cation. Plant okra on the garden’s north side so shorter plants receive adequate sun. Soak okra seeds in water the night before planting to speed up germination. Most okra varieties require a fair amount of garden space to grow. You will want to plant each okra seed in the row 4 inches apart at a planting depth of 1 inch. Once the okra be-come seedlings, thin the plants to about 15 inches between each plant.

In late summer when okra plants become tall, cut them back to a height of 3 to 4 feet to renew the plants and make harvesting easier. This is also a good time to side-dress the okra with a nitrogen fertilizer. Alternatively, you can plant a second crop of okra 6 weeks after the first planting.

Okra generally have minimal disease problems, but are sensitive to root knot nematodes. Insect pests of okra include aphids, corn earworms, stink bugs, leaf-footed bugs, loopers, and ants. Use an organic mulch to conserve soil moisture and help with weed control.

The time between planting and first harvest is about 65 days. Harvest okra by snapping or cutting the pods from the plant. Even spineless okra varieties cause some irritation, so make sure to wear long sleeves when interacting with a plant. Pick the pods when they are about 3 inches long. The pods grow fast! They should be preserved or prepared within a few days of picking.

For more advice on how to grow a successful garden, see Extension Publication P3616, Mississippi Vegetable Gardener’s Guide.

Words to GREAUX by

MAKING SENSE OF FERTILIZERS.

The start of the growing season is always busy and exciting. As the weather turns warm, gardeners come out in groves to start weeding flowerbeds, cultivating soil, and spreading mulch. Garden centers and home improvement stores advertise and promote gardening products during this time of year. Garden tools, gloves, hoses, and pesticides are some of the more common products that you will see. The most popular product by far, other than the plants themselves, is fertilizer. You need it for your plants to live. Without it, your plants will not bloom, fruit, or grow properly. While this is all true, some of the fertilizer products can be slightly misleading. People are always wanting to know what the best fertilizer is and which one they should choose for their landscape plants. The answer is different for every garden.

Soil testing is the first step in determining a fertilizer program for any type of plant. Fertilizing is the supplemental application of essential plant nutrients. The soil plays an integral role in providing nutrients for plants. A soil test analysis provides a survey of what nutrients are readily available in your soil and what nutrients are deficient. Choose a fertilizer that fills in the nutrient gaps. That is the answer when someone asks for the best fertilizer product to use in their landscape. The LSU AgCenter provides a soil testing service to the public. Check your local extension office for information on how to submit a sample.

To compare different fertilizer products, it is helpful to understand the fertilizer label. Products labeled as a fertilizer must contain a “fertilizer analysis” on the label. A fertilizer analysis displays the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium for that product. These three elements represent the primary nutrients required for healthy plant growth. Three numbers separated by dashes are used to show the percentage of each element (N-P-K). Use the analysis to determine which fertilizer to use in a home fertilization program.

Complete fertilizers contain some of all three nutrients. Vigoro Tree, Shrub, and Evergreen Fertilizer (16-4-8) is a good example. Fertilizers like 8-8-8 and 13-13-13 are also examples of complete fertilizers. Incomplete fertilizers contain only one or two of the primary nutrients. Calcium nitrate (15.5-0-0), superphosphate (0-17-0), and muriate of potash (0-0-60) are popular examples.

Controlled-release fertilizers provide nutrients to the soil over an extended period. These products release nutrients anywhere between a few weeks to several months. This allows for less frequent applications and prevents excess nutrients from leaching out of the root zone. Osmocote is a wellknown brand of slow-release fertilizers.

Organic fertilizers are made from materials that are derived from once-living organisms. These products are becoming more and more available. They are not as concentrated like conventional fertilizers but they still provide primary nutrients. Black Kow Composted Cow Manure (0.5-0.5-0.5) and composted chicken manure (3-2-2) are commonly seen products that fall under organic complete fertilizer category. Blood meal (12-0-0) and bone meal (0-10-0) are examples of organic incomplete fertilizers.

Choosing the right fertilizer is like putting together a puzzle. The soil test analysis is one side of the puzzle while the fertilizer is the corresponding piece. It’s all about supplying deficient nutrients. Don’t guess, soil test!

Hope you all are doing well and enjoying the nice Spring temperatures we are having. We all know they won’t be around for long. I have decided to do some decluttering while it is cool enough to spend the day outside getting rid of things I no longer want or need. It has been a nice change. Today’s project can actually be hung from your fence gate, front door, or anywhere you may choose. This one will actually be on my granddaughter’s door at college. I got the carrot cut outs from Dollar Tree. So if you did want to hang them outside I would recommend gluing two cut outs together as they are thin, After the glue dries apply a good wood sealer. I use Deco Art. When dry, sand the pieces and wipe away any dust residue. I alternated the colors, some are Spiced Orange and some of Deco Arts new color Fresh Mango. The tops are Foliage Green on the Fresh Mango carrot and Avocado on the Spiced Pumpkin. I used different stencils to add the designs to the carrots and the greenery on top. Shaded around the carrots and tops with accent colors and added[a the letters with Warm White. The Bunny is Warm White with pink cheeks and I glued a carrot to him that I had in my stash. Painted in his facial features. I used some light weight jute to string the carrots together. Well, this is a different way of doing a carrot display but I like it! Instead of putting “Bunny Trail” you can put “Happy Easter” by putting the E on the bunny instead of the carrot. There are only 10 carrots in the package. This project was made up fairly quickly and it was fun!

Well, that’s my project for this time.

So what will your next project be? Mine.....I am already working on it and it is so much fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, the last issue I talked about is how the New Orleans Saints need to fire Mickey Loomis! I will stand by that until they have the onions to do so. With that said, this issue will head back to the college ranks and more specifically the state of the LSU Athletic program. If you notice my graphic, 11 programs ranked inside the Top 25 with 9 of those ranked inside the Top 13 in the country. This includes National Championship contenders in Baseball, Gymnastics, Softball, Golf, Track, Women’s Basketball & Beach Volleyball. Now as amazing as this list is, there is one HUGE program that is missing from that list. That of course is Men’s Basketball with Matt McMahon at the helm. LSU lost its sixth straight game, 91-62 to No. 10 seed Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament to finish 14-18 on the season – its second losing season overall and in the SEC (3-15) in just three seasons of McMahon, who went 14-19 and 2-16 in his first season in 2022-23.

The Tigers lost two other games by 31 points this season – 89-58 to unranked Texas at home on Feb. 1 and 95-64 at No. 19 Kentucky on March 4 – and flirted with another 30-plus loss on to State as the Bulldogs (21-11, 8-10 SEC) led by as many as 32 points several times in the final minutes. Mississippi State’s 31-point margin of victory was its largest in SEC Tournament history, and that happened even though State coach Chris Jans, also in his third season, emptied his bench, using 13 players in all.

McMahon is somehow rumored to be back next season as LSU athletic director Scott Woodward has told those close to him. But this was notably mentioned a while back as Woodward does not do many interviews!

Woodward hired McMahon, so he will be slow to let him go partly for that reason. Also, LSU men’s basketball ranks near the bottom of the SEC in available NIL cash for players, which LSU powers that be plan to change dramatically with new NIL strategies.

And Woodward did sign McMahon to a seven-year contract at $2.8 million a year, which looks like a mistake now as McMahon would have likely come for a four- or five-year deal from Murray State, particularly in this short-sighted NIL-Portal era.

McMahon will likely need to make somewhat of a similar splash, as head football coach Brian Kelly did, in the portal before next season to go with his No. 19-ranked recruiting class coming in next season that includes three players.

“There has to be a reset button,” McMahon said after losing his final game of the season. Now, the reset might not be what McMahon wants it to be as it should include him and in my opinion bring back a fanfavorite and highly winning coach in McNeese State’s Will Wade.

I know what you are saying, LSU and Woodward fired him a few years ago, why would we go back to get him and why would he return?

It is fairly simple! He would immediately re-energize this program and prove that firing him was the wrong move for LSU, Woodward and anyone else that was involved in that dumbfounded decision. Sure, it might be a bad look initially for Woodward as he would have to grovel and beg for THE PEAR to return but ultimately would be seen as human and made a hero for seeing and rectifying the wrong that he made a few years ago.

As far as Wade goes, well he was the king before he left and went I-10 west to Lake Chuck to take the job at McNeese. So, he stayed in the state where he could have gone a ton of places and a return would just strengthen the lore of Wade with LSU and is rabid fan base!

Now, Wade is also rumored to be a top candidate for Ole Miss if their head coach does in fact take the Indiana job. This will not upset LSU fans with Wade but will enrage the base against the Athletic Administration for letting him go and then having to face him multiple times at a rival SEC school. The other spot Wade could land is NC State and even though in the once great ACC he would still have to compete with the likes of North Carolina and Duke just for recruits.

Now, even with his history why are teams still interested in The General, Will Wade?

Well, McNeese just won its’ 2nd consecutive Southland Championship, marking back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and just the fourth-ever bid. Wade is on a dominant run with the Lake Chuck school, guiding the Cowboys to two Southland Conference titles and a 47-8, 36-2 record across two seasons.

McNeese is ranked No. 58 in the NET and No. 57 overall in KenPom, ahead of several Big Ten schools and other high-major programs. The Cowboys took No. 2 Alabama and No. 25 Mississippi State down to the wire, and they’ve won 22 of their last 23 games. Projected to be a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament, they’ll be a trendy upset pick, with a balance of good offensive and defensive numbers.

Wade has also had success at other mid-major programs. At VCU, he went 51-20 with two NCAA Tournament appearances in two seasons. At Chattanooga, he fell just short of two trips to the tournament with a pair of second-place conference finishes and a 40-25 record.

In the end, I believe it is simple..the fans are enraged over a lack-luster basketball team and Will Wade his the guy who could emphatically change things and do it quickly.

Tony’s Take RAYMOND GETS TWO YEARS IN STIR, THREE ON PROBATION

The saga of John Raymond reached another milestone last week when the infamous Slidell pastor was sentenced to a five year prison sentence.

Raymond finally showed a trace of regret and humility after the judge made his ruling. Raymond’s latest lawyer was no answer for the charges levied against Raymond’s treatment of several of the students under his tutelage. Under the ruling, Raymond will have no connection with his school. It’s unclear whether Raymond will be able to keep income from his mail order jewelry business or from his FM radio station, known as “The Bridge”. The “Bridge” has been a Bridge Over Troubled Waters for Raymond, where timely payments to the company providing the station’s equipment had been delinquent for some time several years ago.

It’s ironic that Raymond has displayed an aura of arrogance and smirky innocence, traits more akin to the radical arm of the Democratic Party. That has to disturb Raymond, who used charisma, ignorance and bullying to secure a position with local and state conservative Republican groups. A Democrat in Republican clothing. How do you like him now, G.O.P.?

Raymond was an early contestant on “Survivor”, a long-standing television series where a group of men and women are tasked with chores, physical and psychological challenges and the ability to get along with other contestants while seeking to remain the last person on the island where they were placed, thus being the winner of that season. Raymond was voted off his island first, perhaps even faster than most contestants in the same position during other seasons. Raymond believed it was because of his strengths and leadership abilities. But I have had conversations with other “Survivor” participants and they rolled their eyes and smirked when I offered his version of his ouster.

Now in his 60’s, Raymond’s age apparently did not figure in the sentencing. Despite pleas from his family, Raymond’s journey has taken a seriously negative turn. Recounting the words of John Donne four centuries ago, “no man is an island......do not ask for whom the bells toll, they toil for thee.”

I’m sure Raymond will attempt to organize some type of questionable activity while in prison, where he, like every other inmate, is innocent. But his true judgement cometh soon and even Raymond must bow to His sentencing of a mortal who could have been great had he been the Christian he purportred to be.

GARDEN SOIL PREPARATION

No matter what type of soil you have in your garden, adding organic matter can significantly improve it. If your soil is heavy clay, organic matter enhances drainage and aeration while promoting better root development. In sandy soils, it helps retain moisture and nutrients.

To make a noticeable difference in soil structure, a substantial amount of organic material should be incorporated. Ideally, at least one-third of the final soil mix should consist of organic matter. Achieve this by spreading a 2- to 4-inch layer of organic material over the garden surface and tilling it to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. At the same time, apply the recommended amount of fertilizer and incorporate it into the soil along with the organic matter.

While some gardeners prefer using a shovel or spading fork to prepare the soil, many opt for a more efficient method. If you own a rototiller or plan to rent or purchase one, the following tips can help make the job easier:

• Leave an untilled row between passes to allow for smoother, wider turns. This prevents the tiller from pulling itself—and you—into the next row.

• When working with heavy clay soil or breaking new ground, lower the tiller’s engine speed. This allows the soil to be turned more thoroughly while reducing exces-sive bouncing and bucking.

• If tilling for the first time, don’t attempt to reach the full depth on the first pass. Instead, set the brake stake to half the desired depth for the initial pass, then adjust it to full depth and go over the area again.

• Till only when the soil is slightly dry and friable. Wet soil can form large clumps that harden as they dry, making future work more difficult. Additionally, wet soil can stick to tiller blades, causing imbalance and un-necessary wear on both the machine and the operator.

Where to Find Organic Matter

Organic matter—an essential component for improving soil and nourishing beneficial microbes—comes in many forms. You can use peat moss, compost, hay, grass clippings, barnyard manure, shredded bark, leaves, or even shredded newspaper to enhance your garden soil.

TIPS FOR TRAVELING SAFELY WITH YOUR PET

Traveling with your pet can be an amazing experience, but it takes careful planning to ensure your pet stays safe and comfortable through the journey. Whether you’re heading out on a road trip, flying across the country, or taking an international getaway with your pet, there are several essential tips to consider to make the trip smooth for both you and your furry companion.

Before you go anywhere, make sure your pet is microchipped and wearing up-to-date ID tags. This helps ensure you are reunited with them if they get lost. Keeping your contact information current helps to avoid any delays in getting your furry loved one back to you. Also, familiarizing your pet with their travel environment through a brief walk can help to reduce their stress within an unfamiliar setting.

If you’re traveling by plane, check with your airline about their pet policies. Many airlines will allow small animals to be carried onboard with you while larger pets must be checked in. Keep in mind that airlines can charge extra for taking a pet and have specific requirements for crates for larger pets. It is advisable to visit your vet before any extended air travel with your pet as extensive documentation and specific vaccinations made be required as well.

When traveling by car with your pet, be sure to pack all their necessities and provide them with plenty of exercise beforehand. Here are some of those essentials to consider:

• Well-ventilated crate appropriate to the size of your pet

• Food, water, and bowls to hold them

• Clean-up bags for your pet’s waste

• Toys or Blankets from home

• Any pet medications on hand

When you’re booking a stay for you and your pet, consider pet-friendly hotels. It’s important to always check the hotel’s availability in advance and check their pet policies. Some hotels charge extra fees for pets, so it’s best to plan in advance. If you’re visiting family or friends who have pets, be sure to introduce the animals gradually for everyone’s safety. However, if you won’t be taking your pet along, research local pet boarding options or individuals you trust who would mind watching them while you are.

No matter how your adventure unfolds, if you keep these tips in mind, both you and your pet will have a safe and fun journey together. Also, if you’re looking for a travel buddy to share your next trip with visit www.louisianaspca.org/adopt and discover a world of adorable adoptable pets ready for an adventure.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

START volunteers are happy to share with you these pictures of some of our fabulous felines who have been adopted recently. They were homeless cats either rescued from the street or surrendered by owners who could no longer care for them. We are so grateful to the wonderful people in the community who opened their hearts and homes to give these cats a second chance. Please visit your local animal shelter or contact a rescue organization if you are thinking of adding a pet to your family. There are so many wonderful homeless pets waiting to meet you.
