NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this special one. Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times, for three days and your favor will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.T.O.

There was a time in all sports that one-upmanship, silliness, childish celebrations and mouthing off was met with, at least the minimum, a dosage of disdain and a maximum of a penalty, ejection or a fine. Sports like golf, tennis, hockey and baseball don’t play when it comes to acting the fool. Hockey, of course, has the testosterone release of physical fighting which is the mantra of the sport. Slights are nonexistent; fights are not. But it’s reality, not b.s. Real blood flows.
In most every other sport, however, a certain dignity has been observed until the past 20 years. There were unwritten laws and enforcers in the lane. Want to drive on Russell or Chamberlain? Want a trip to the dentist or doctor? Throw at my head more than once? Scrum time, friend! But these were limited encounters, passages of passion in the heat of a physical contest.
These days, too many athletic performers think that’s what they are - not performing athletes. Why does a 19-year old hush a crowd when scoring a touchdown? What’s the rationale for a generational basketball player to pantomime the nonexistence of a crowd and wave off a competitor attempting a shot? When did players have to be allowed to celebrate every achievement on the field with a pose, prop or profanity?

There is more than enough room for an athlete to celebrate a good move during a contest without being a smart ass. Today’s smack is tomorrow’s slur and next week’s funeral as a continuation of immaturity of behavior contradicts the discipline of what it takes to excel. You’re not going to ghetto your way into a starting position on your team; your coaches, teammates and supporters all expect more from you. Taking the alleged “dis” to a schoolyard showdown just means you have a long ways to go before your mental and emotional maturity even comes close to your physical attributes.
This phenomenon has been going on for so long that it has become as comical as it is pathetic. Today’s frat boy “boo-yah!” is so 2010 as are the pathetic attempts of a father to “buddy up” his eight-year old instead of teaching him what it takes to become the father as opposed to the buddy. It is a father-son relationship after all, not two equals. Women don’t seem to have this problem. The nurturing spirit of ladies seems to act as a buffer between having the relationship between their mother-daughter relationship devolve into a BFF-Besties dynamic.
Let the obvious winners point to their ring finger and the general attendance, not the opposing players or fans. Let players like Angel Reese make at least a move to put a poorly offered White House visit in perspective. Politicians and their families and followers continue to really show what true cluenessness is like. Stay out of it, folks! Ignorance is not bliss and getting invited to the White House is not a kumbaya-Coke-We-Are-The-World moment. It’s for achievement, whether enhanced with game time silliness or game time nobility by the winning team. -0-

LAWN WEED SPOTLIGHT:
Henbit, Lamium amplexicaule
Weeds can be frustrating. Especially, when maintaining a home lawn and unwanted plants start popping up all over. These weeds compete with turfgrass for light, water, and nutrients. They take away from the beauty of a week-maintained area of turfgrass. And then, once you become familiar with the common weeds, a new species will appear and run wild. It can be exhausting, but we work hard to keep our home landscapes looking good. All we can do is learn about these new plants and implement control methods to prevent their establishment.
Henbit, Lamium amplexicaule, is a species of dead-nettle introduced to the United States. It’s classified into the plant family, Lamiaceae, which includes many common herbs and other interesting horticultural plants like salvia, coleus, and Swedish ivy. It is considered an annual plant, meaning that it completes its life cycle in one growing season. In Louisiana, it’s considered a cool-season plant because it germinates in the fall and matures in the spring. Once it has flowered and produced seed, the mother plant will fade as the weather turns warm. Those seeds are then deposited into the soil’s seed bank where they can produce new plants in future years.
The plant itself has somewhat of an ornamental look to it because of it’s pretty purple flowers. The leaves of henbit appear opposite each other as you make your way down the stem. The leaves themselves are broadly egg-shaped with a scalloped margin and very noticeable veins on the underside. Leaves on the upper portion of henbit directly attach to the stem (sessile) whereas the lower leaves use an appendage called a petiole to attach themselves. The plant can reach a mature height around 16 inches if unobstructed. The flowers are a reddish-purple color. If you look close enough, you can see darker colors within the spots on the lower petals.
To manage this plant in a lawn setting it is important to provide optimum growing conditions for the species of turfgrass. Whether you grow bermudagrass, St Augustinegrass, zoysiagrass, or centipedegrass all will suppress weed growth when in good health. All common lawn grass species grow thick enough to out compete other plants growing within them. It’s only when the lawn becomes stressed that weeds start appearing. Follow the proper cultural control methods for your lawn. Things like soil sampling/fertilizing, mowing height, mowing frequency, supplemental irrigation, aerification, and pest control should all be considered in a weed control program. However, if herbicide is warranted there are options.
Three-way herbicides that contain 2,4-D, dicamba, and mecoprop will control henbit growing in a warm-season turfgrass species. Some examples include Fertilome Weed-Out Lawn Weed Killer, BioAdvanced Southern Weed Killer for Lawns, or Ortho Weed B Gon Weed Killer for Lawns. Some folks may have Fertilome Weed Free Zone in their toolboxes. It’s considered a four-way herbicide because of the addition of carfentrazone and will work on henbit too. Metsulfuron-methyl (MSM Turf) will also help to control henbit growing in warm-season turfgrasses.
Pre-emergent herbicides are used to help manage annual weeds in the lawn because they kill the germinating seed before it is seen. Atrazine is a special active ingredient that displays some post and pre-emergent qualities. It does a very good job on annual broadleaf weeds like henbit. Time an application for September to prevent henbit germination. Dithiopyr (Hi-Yield Weed and Grass Stopper Containing Dimension) and isoxaben (Fertilome Broadleaf Weed Control with Gallery) are two other options available. Always remember that when using herbicides to always read and follow the label instructions. Make it a habit to review the label every time you use the product.
Management of henbit in a flowerbed situation is straight forward. It can be hand pulled with ease to remove immediately. A 3-4 inch layer of mulch will block sunlight to the soil and help prevent the seeds of henbit from germinating. Pre-emergent herbicides can also be used in flowerbeds if the product label provides directions for use.

Well, The New Orleans Saints have long been a team that is known for their offensive firepower, with Drew Brees leading the way for over a decade. However, with Brees now retired, the team has been looking to find a new leader at the quarterback position. It looks like they finally found that guy in Derek Carr.
First and foremost, it is important to note that Derek Carr is a proven quarterback in the NFL. Since being drafted by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Carr has started 110 games and thrown for over 28,000 yards and 185 touchdowns. He has also been selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his career. Carr has shown that he can be a consistent performer at the quarterback position, which is exactly what the Saints need as they look to move on from Drew Brees.
One of the biggest strengths that Derek Carr brings to the table is his accuracy. Carr has completed 65.3% of his passes over his career, which is an impressive number. This accuracy is particularly important in the Saints’ offense, which relies heavily on the short passing game. With Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara as two of the team’s top offensive weapons, having a quarterback who can accurately deliver the ball to them in space is critical. Carr’s accuracy would allow the Saints to continue to run their offense as they have in the past, without having to make significant changes to accommodate a new quarterback.
In addition to his accuracy, Derek Carr is also known for his ability to protect the football. Carr has thrown just 71 interceptions in his career, which is an interception rate of just 1.7%. This ability to take care of the ball is particularly important in the NFL, where turnovers can often be the difference between winning and losing. The Saints have always been a team that values ball security, and Carr’s ability to limit turnovers would fit in well with the team’s philosophy.
Another area where Derek Carr could have a significant impact on the Saints is in his leadership. Carr has long been considered a team leader, both on and off the field. He is known for his work ethic and his ability to rally his teammates around him. The Saints are a team that has always valued leadership, and having a quarterback who can step into that role would be a huge asset for the team. Carr’s leadership could help the team navigate the transition away from Drew Brees and help keep the team focused on its goals.
Carr’s consistent play would be a significant upgrade for the Saints, as they have struggled to find stability at the quarterback position in recent years. In the 2020 season, the team started four different quarterbacks due to injuries and inconsistent play. Carr’s durability is something that cannot be overlooked. In his seven seasons as a starter, Carr has only missed two games due to injury. This is impressive considering the physical toll that playing quarterback in the NFL takes on a player’s body. The Saints have had some bad luck with injuries over the past few seasons, especially at the quarterback position. Carr’s ability to stay healthy would be a welcome change for the team and could provide some much-needed stability.
One of the most significant impacts that Carr could have on the Saints is his ability to make quick decisions and deliver accurate passes. The Saints’ offense has been known for its quick passing game under Brees, and Carr has shown that he can excel in this type of offense as well.
Carr has a quick release and is excellent at throwing accurate passes in tight windows. This would be a significant asset for the Saints, as they have some talented receivers who can make plays after the catch. Carr’s ability to get the ball to his playmakers quickly and accurately would be a game-changer for the team.
Another impact that Carr could have on the Saints is his ability to stretch the field vertically. Brees was known for his short and intermediate passing game, but Carr has shown that he can throw the deep ball as well. The Saints have some speedy receivers, who could thrive in a vertical passing game. Carr’s arm strength and accuracy on deep throws would allow the Saints to take more shots down the field and keep defenses on their toes.
Carr’s mobility is another aspect of his game that could make a significant impact on the Saints. While he is not known as a running quarterback, Carr has shown that he can make plays with his feet when necessary. The Saints’ offensive line has been one of the best in the league over the past few years, but there are times when a quarterback needs to make plays outside of the pocket. Carr’s ability to extend plays with his legs and make throws on the run would be a valuable asset for the team.
Of course, there are also potential drawbacks to bringing in Derek Carr. One of the concerns that has been raised is his ability to perform in clutch situations. Carr has a reputation for struggling in highpressure situations, particularly in playoff games. This is certainly a valid concern, as the Saints are a team that not only wants to make the playoffs but to consistently have deep playoff runs. However, it is worth noting that Carr has improved in this area in recent years, and his experience as a starting quarterback in the NFL should help him handle the pressure of big games.
In my opinion, Derek Carr is a great addition to the New Orleans Saints. His accuracy, ability to protect the football, and leadership qualities are all assets to the team while his ability to connect with the fanbase with not only help the franchise but the city as well.

Tony’s Take
I’m writing this before my operation because this is probably the way I will feel. For my entire life, I have felt a physical restriction that went beyond DNA and environment. I wan’t sure what it was and since I showed no obvious handicaps, nothing was really done until the end of my high school years. Even then, a heart murmur was just something some people had; nothing to get hung about. But in a world of no Medicare or Medicaid or nearly the understanding of preventative medicine as practiced today, a murmur was nothing the average middle class family wanted to take on, financially or otherwise.
I went on to college, “benefitting” from my 1-Y draft status my murmur gave me, which meant I wouldn’t be thrown into the Mixmaster of Vietnam at its height. Part of me hated the idea that I couldn’t serve but my projected “in country” date as a Marine second lieutenant (OCS was a given) was the start of the biggest offensive of the war (Tet, January 1968). Anyone who served at that time still can recite the odds of making it to February. It was brutal. So I survived without the scars of learning to survive in Vietnam.
I was married by then and had two kids, born in 1974 and 1978. I did most of the usual activities, played community ball, bowled, golfed, fished. I liked running but I never could build the stamina an unrestricted blood flow might have provided. But I did run, thinking little of my heart’s undiscovered restrictions which required no monitoring or care as a young adult.
As cardio care sophisticated, so did the analysis of my condition, from murmur to tricuspid value leakage to aortic valve stenosis. A-fib was thrown in for good measure and blood thinners were prescribed. But nothing else and no restrictions.
My heart is strong but its supporting cast has been dragging its heels. My heart’s had to beat billions of times more because of this condition but the tradeoff was no stints, a simple beta blocker pill, no pacemakers, etc. Or at least that what I assumed. However, 2023 brought the Godly factory notification of impending warranty expiration and/or failure for much of the support equipment for my heart. Nothing in the notification involved an emergency procedure but it certainly came with no option to wait for a year or more. Last week, I received the Overhaul as I described two weeks ago: a new fuel intake (tricuspid valve), voltage regular (a-fib nerve endings modification) and a partial new fuel line ( removal and replacement of a section of my aorta wall which housed an aneurysm). I wasn’t sure if I got fries with that but the results were certainly a Happy Meal. No cardio blockage was revealed and only one minor artery showed any indication of blockage which should not be a

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com
Hoping you all had a Blessed Easter. Hope all the kids got lots of treats from the Easter Bunny and they got to enjoy those after Easter Sunday mass. When we were kids we could choose only one thing from our Easter baskets before church. Then after church and lunch, whether it was a traditional sit down meal or a crab or crawfish boil, we had an Easter egg hunt and then could indulge in our sweet treats. Things have surely changed a lot over the years. But, I hope one thing still remains the same, that Easter Sunday is a day of reflection, thanks, and spending it with our loved ones. We were missing a family member this Easter. One of my younger sister’s passed away a little over two weeks before Easter. So this was truly a day of reflection for me. Keep those you love close to your heart. If they are far away, talk to them often, she and I did at least 3 to 4 times a week. We just never know how much time we have.
Even though Easter has passed doesn’t mean we still can’t have bunnies around. We can always have Spring Bunnies and Garden Bunnies. Today we have a Spring Bunny playing with a butterfly in a tulip batch. I think it is very fitting for this beautiful Sunday afternoon. This is an original design by Tracey Moreau, my favorite Canadian artist. This little darling is cut from MDF and the stand is specially made just for this bunny. After base coating, the bunny is stamped using either the stamping ink or you can apply paint to your stamp for the same result. If you use the stamping ink, once the project is completed, spray with a good spray varnish, let dry well, then you can apply a brush on varnish if you choose to. This was a fun piece to paint. In fact I have 3 more of these on my painting table to finish. Such a popular little item. Hope you like it.
Well, that’s all I have for this time. So what will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

health factor moving forward.
First, I was on my feet hours after surgery. Ho, hum, welcome to the club. I was in Intensive Care for a while and then under observation until my discharge just the other day. I am not at the office for this issue but I fully expect to be riding around (on a regular but limited basis with a driver) this time next week. Do I feel like a new man? You better believe it! Others having a similar procedure told me how amazed they were feeling because when your blood flow has been restricted for so long, it’s like dining on a gourmet meal after thousands of visits to the usual chew and choke restaurants of the world. Six weeks of not getting behind the wheel? Not quite as bad as I imagined as there are wonderful people out there who will reach out to you to assist if the opportunity presents itself.
I will be attending a conference next month ( 30 days after surgery) and don’t feel I’ll need any special consideration because of my recovery. I have not lost any of my desire to continue writing, publishing or similar activities because of the surgery. This valve will be good for 15 years and then my surgeon said I could have a replacement done similar to today’s TAVR or noninvasive method. By that time, I’m sure there will be an app to download which will replace the valve or perhaps Amazon or Microsoft will have a delivery service that will produce a digital insertion of a medical procedure. Anyway, that’s for another day. I’m going to enjoy another 24/7 of my new cardio apparatus and look forward to a thankful, more peaceful, and prosperous spring, summer and the rest of 2023.
...Beginning with our April 6th issue
Earlier this Month
Metro Plus has converted to a digital publication entirely, beginning with this April 6th issue. We’ve looked at doing this for some time. As things progress, so does the way of doing business.
We will unveil our new website, www.printmediaplus.com, later this month. It will include a link to Metro Plus and our other media businesses, Mr. Map and MyEmail.
We don’t want to see physical print disappear but we can still get your favorite reading material to you. You’ll be able to print us out on your device and printer. AND IT’S STILL FREE!
To help adjust to this new reality, we will send 60,000 emails to businesses and homes into the areas that we service each two week publication period......St. Tammany and much of the area around metro New Orleans and four counties in Mississippi (three along the coast and Stone County, just north). These emails will be in the form of Metro Plus’s latest issue, with information included about our new email company. We will continue to email to help reach a readership that should equal or exceed our current audience. It should be a win-win situation.
Whether or not you receive an emailed issue, simply paste our website (below) into your website browser. If you don’t have a computer or other electronic tools vitally necessary to function in today’s environment, you should consider getting one soon or risk losing other resources to modernization. Hundreds of papers like me have gone out of business over the past 10 to 15 years. We won’t..with your help and understanding.

HERB GARDENING
DIRT DELIVERED & spread. Fill dirt, limestone, sand, crushed concrete. Call 228-861-0818.
Mulching
Once any danger of frost has passed (we never know this year), you can start planting your herb garden. A few things to think about when planting: most need full sun, all need well-drained soil (herbs DO NOT like wet feet), and provide good air circulation. Herbs can be used for cooking, fragrance, landscaping, medicinal purposes (if you are taking other medications, contact your doctor before using herbs or herbal supplements), and for crafts and decoration. Some good herbs for Mississippi gardens include: mint, basil, nasturtium, catnip, chives, dill, garlic, thyme, parsley, and sage. Rosemary will grow best in a pot or in an area with WELL-DRAINED soil.
A proper nutritional balance is important for proper growth. Get a soil test before fertilizing. Overfertilization causes succulent, or weak, growth. Succulent growth dilutes the concentration of essential oils, thus limiting the flavor and aroma of the herbs. On the other hand, inadequate fertilization will limit growth, resulting in stunted and weak plants. Base your fertilizer on the soil test recommendations. If you did not do a soil test, apply a complete, slow-release fertilizer with a 1-2-2 or 1-2-1 ratio of N, P, and K in the spring and again in mid to late summer.
Mulch with pine bark, straw, or wood chips, being careful not to pile the mulch around the stem base.
Pruning
Tender herbs should be pruned to remove dead tissue in early spring before growth begins. Herbs valued for their young foliage should be pruned regularly during the growing season to encourage fresh, young growth.
Harvesting
To obtain foliage with the maximum amount of oil, harvest in the early morning, after the dew has dried. If this is not convenient, harvesting may be done anytime. To allow adequate time for regrowth of perennial herbs, do not harvest rigorously after late summer.

(Louisiana) Plaquemines Parish Arrest Report Summary for March 29 - April 11, 2023
Pet Identifications
Starting on April 17th, we will be observing National Pet ID Week! The Louisiana SPCA emphasizes how important it is for pet owners to make sure their pet’s identification is up to date. Pet identification can be the ID tags attached to their collars as well as microchips given to them at the vet. These identifications will provide the best chance possible for reunification with their owners in the case they are lost.
About one in three pets will go missing at some point in their life. The Louisiana SPCA took in a total of 2,515 stray animals in 2022 alone and of those animals 621 were reunited with their families. These reunions were typically because their families had their pet microchipped or had an ID tag on them.
Every pet family should prepare for the possibility of their pet getting lost. A crucial step to keeping your pets safe is to make sure that they have proper identification so that you can be notified as soon as your pet is found. That is why once they do have identification, it is important that the information on it is up to date. That means every time you move or change your phone number or email, you are also updating that info on their ID tag and microchip. To change the information on their microchip, you will need to call the microchip company. If you are unaware of the microchip company, call the facility that provided the microchip or visit your local vet for them to scan the microchip. The first few numbers of a microchip number are specific to the company that issued it, so you would be able to scan the microchip to retrieve the number and then research the first few numbers to find the company.
If you do lose your pet, the most important thing to know is that each parish has a “stray hold period”. This hold period is designed to allow you time to find your pet. Each parish’s hold period is different; for example, Orleans Parish is three days and Jefferson and Plaquemines Parish are both five days. If you have your address listed on the ID tag or microchip and it is present on the animal when they come to us, Louisiana Law requires that the animal be held for seven days.
Steps to take if you lose your pet:
• File a lost report! You can do it online at www.louisianaspca.org/lostreport
• Call your microchip company. Make sure your info is up to date. They will send out alerts to nearby shelters and vet offices, but make sure to ask them if they can provide that service.
• Search your neighborhood. Dawn and dusk are the most active times for lost pets to roam.
• Ask your neighbors to keep an eye out for them or ask if they are already seen them so you have a better idea of where they might have gone.
• Post lost pet flyers and post on social media sites like Facebook lost and found groups, Craigslist and Nextdoor.
• Visit your local shelter, local animal rescues, and local vet offices to see if your pet has been brought to any of those locations.

We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
YODA FRIEND RITA BRADY
JOE ARCHIE
START Volunteers are so happy to see our homeless cats find forever homes. Joe,Archie,Rita, Yoda, Brady, and Friend are just a few of our fabulous feline rescues who have been adopted. We try to provide our adopters with useful information on helping their new family member acclimate to their home. One of the important topics we cover is food. We encourage feeding cats both dry and wet food. Canned food provides variety and added moisture to the cat’s diet. Most cats look forward to their little dish of wet food and will be happier and healthier if they get this special treat.

MY EMAIL CONCEPT AND PRICING
MY EMAIL is a marketing method targeted to influence people with financial flexibility who can afford a good deal or service contract.
MY EMAIL is a service that “inserts” ads into the trailing end of Metro Plus, the largest and most established shopper/editorial publication (32 years) in your shopping region. It’s 1/2 page or larger sized ads command readership in messages that require recipients to respond in a timely manner, every two weeks, when Metro Plus is published.
It reaches 60,000 emailed homes in your regional trade area once every two weeks.
It enters households with a threshold income of $60,000 to those with over $100,000 annually.
At $125 for a 1/2 page or $250 for a full page, complete color ad message, the cost is less than two-tenths of a penny for the 1/2 page and less than four-tenths of a penny for the full page. You will reach 43 to 86 times as many households/businesses for your dollar than direct mail costs with a bigger, cleaner and easier to read message than on newsprint with no print production costs.
MY EMAIL clients also get the benefit of non-emailed Metro Plus readers, who can go directly to the Metro Plus website, printmediaplus.com which was promoted in the newsprint version of Metro Plus and on the rack signs at the physical locations where it was distributed prior to MY EMAIL.
