Tony’s Take

NATIONAL POLITICIAN EVER FROM LOUISIANA

If you were to meet Mike Johnson on the street, you would think he was a low key but influential corporate type, perhaps an economist or involved in law or insurance.

Listening to his speech patterns, you would be baffled by a lack of identifiable tone or vocabulary, intensity or variations. Well-dressed and under control, you would consider Johnson approachable and considerate.

This would hardly fit the description of any of the dozen or so powerful Louisana politicians of the past 90 years that made their mark in Washington D.C.. Beginning with Huey P. Long, The Kingfish was a bigger than life force, self-made and bombastic, street and brain smart. He served one term as a U.S. Senator until his assassination in 1935. As Governor he was perhaps the most influential Governor ever on a national scale. Following a period from the mid-Depression until just before World War II, there were no notable Louisiana politicians until the Big Four arrived in Washington: Hale Boggs, Allen Ellender, F. Edward Hebert and Russell Long. All were highly effective politicians; Boggs and Hebert as Representatives while Ellender and Long served long terms in the Senate. There was never a question which state they represented once you met them. As a team, they were the most powerful Congressional coalition from one state to ever serve at one time (during the 1950’s and ‘60s).

Boggs was the House Majority Leader in the early ’70’s and Steve Scalise serves that role today. But the only Speaker of the House from Louisiana has been Johnson, who was elected in October of 2023. Johnson at first was considered a long shot and once in office, his inexperience was a hinderance to the young congressman. But Johnson, who hails from the northwest Louisiana town of Benton, has shown a temperament and professionalism that has meshed well with today’s visibly divided Congress.

Like his predecessor, the late U.S Senator J. Bennett Johnston, Johnson is quietly winning over his peers and keeping the Trump agenda on an even keel. Like J. Bennett Johnston, Johnson was born in the Ark-La-Tex, in Shreveport, just a 15-minute jump to Benton. And Benton is just ten minutes from Bossier City and the Scopena Plantation, home of former Governor, the late Buddy Roemer. Maybe there’s something in the water in that corner of the state. But having to deal with forces from two other states just a few miles from their homes, these men learned how to move among the influential during their careers. Johnson already has shown he is the equal or perhaps even the best person to ever walk the Washington D.C. tightrope. Where his performance and personality take him in the future, Louisiana is lucky to have him serve in this monumental position today.

Words to GREAUX by

TIME TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR AZALEA BUSHES.

Earlier this year, we all wondered if the snowfall and cold weather would affect the spring azalea bloom. It doesn’t appear to be so, because every azalea down the block bloomed like they never bloomed before. I think the cold weather provided them with a boost! With that being said, this is an appropriate time to discuss azalea care and maintenance.

Now that azalea plants have finished their big spring bloom, it’s time to perform a few maintenance steps so they can look good for the rest of the year. Whether you grow Indica azaleas, native azaleas, Robin Hill azaleas, or encore azaleas, there are always a few things to do that help with their appearance and overall health.

Pruning is the first thing that most think of when “maintaining” their azalea plants. That is because you see immediate results and you get to use cutting tools. It’s time to pull out those hand pruners, bypass loppers, and pruning saws from the tool shed. Inspect your tools to make sure they work properly. Sharp blades make clean cuts and clean cuts heal faster. Make it a habit to sharpen the blades on cutting tools prior to each use.

When making pruning cuts on azalea plants, there are a few guidelines to follow. Pruning needs to be done as soon as the spring flowering period is over. Other azalea types, especially the re-blooming types, set flower buds constantly and can be pruned as needed during the summer months. Indica Azaleas are a little different and produce next year’s flower buds 6-8 weeks after the big spring bloom. Make it easy and prune all azaleas in the landscape at this time.

The first thing should be to look for broken, diseased, or damaged stems. Remove damaged pieces by following the stem back to where it originates and cut it out. Next, look for those long shoots that seem to skyrocket above the plant. This can be done using hedge shears, but I find you can get a much more natural look when removing these shoots individually with hand pruners. You can remove 25 to 35% of the total plant during this step. Think about how tall the bush should be in its current situation to help guide you during the process. Prune lower than the ideal height to allow the plant to grow into your desired size. For overgrown plants that need more than 25 to 35% removed, aim to accomplish in multiple years to mitigate plant stress.

Fertilizing should always be applied directly after pruning for immediate use by the plant. Plants respond to pruning by growing, making it important for the plant to grow in fertile soil. If a soil test analysis is available, look for deficiencies and supplement with an appropriate soil amendment. In situations where there is no soil report to use, then use one of the general azalea, camellia, and rhododendron fertilizers at the labeled rate. Once the fertilizer or amendment product has been added, water it either by hand, with the irrigation system, or time the application before a natural rain event.

While pruning and fertilizing may be some of the more popular maintenance steps related to azaleas, pest management is needed from time to time. Azalea Lace Bug damage shows up during the summer months as discolored leaf surfaces with insect signs on the lower surfaces. Red-headed Azalea Caterpillars show up later in the year but can devour foliage at an inopportune time. Both can be managed using systemic insecticides like imidacloprid. Just make sure to read and follow the pesticide label on whatever product you decide to use. Azalea Leaf Gall shows up in the spring as weird tumor-like growths on new leaf tissue. It is caused by a fungal organism and happens quite often in humid climates. Collecting these strange growths and throwing them out with the trash will reduce inoculum, preventing reinfection, and it’s our top recommendation for prevention. If you see something strange going on with an azalea plant and it’s not described in this article, feel free to reach out and request help from your local extension office.

I Love the beautiful weather we are having! I hope it continues to stay this way for Easter weekend. Not that I have any small grandchildren that I will be hiding Easter eggs for. But, I do have friends who have small grandchildren and great grandchildren who are looking forward to the Easter Egg Hunt after Church. Guess a lot of people will be using plastic eggs filled with treats instead of boiled chicken eggs.

This little Bunny is already painting some of his jelly beans and eggs to leave out. He has also painted up a family of Peeps in bright colors to make everyone happy! And in case he gets hungry from all his hard work, he didn’t forget to bring himself a carrot to munch on. I really like the way his ears come out of the hat. He was so much fun to paint! This cute little bunny is painted on one of the Tall Hat surfaces which is an exclusive design by Laurie Speltz. She is an excellent artist! Hope you like my version of her design. It is always so much fun painting her designs.

Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....Not really sure. I have 3 things on my craft table waiting for me to finish. Just need to decide which one to finish. Wishing you all a very Blessed and Happy Easter!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, here we go again! My un-officially official 2025 NFL Draft predictions. Now, I know some of you might want to jump on the Shedeur Sanders bandwagon because of the Derek Carr news but I do not think we should trade up or give away too much to move up in the draft. In fact, I wish our main targets would all be gone so we could trade back and gain some more draft capital or at least not reach for a player too high. However for the purposes of this draft, I have the Saints selecting one of their top targets and an instant Taysom Hill type replacement in Tight End Tyler Warren.

Here is what NFL.com has to say about Warren:

“The ultimate “whatever, whenever” player in the 2025 draft with the size, athleticism and competitive spirit to make good on his intentions. Warren plays with swagger and “best player on the field” energy. He imprints on games with alignment versatility, allowing opportunities for play-callers to stress the defense. Despite his size, he’s quick enough to beat man coverage underneath and plays with good recognition of holes in coverage. He has the ball skills and toughness to win contested catches and withstand punishing contact. He’s very capable as a lead/move blocker but will need a little improvement at sustaining blocks when blocking in-line. Warren can access all three levels of the field but is best served short and intermediate. He possesses elite football character and plays with a confidence that can be contagious. He has a chance to become one of the best tight ends in the league.”

Again, I know some of you want the Saints to get Sanders but in my draft the Cowboys make the 2nd trade of the draft by jumping to #6 to grab him with the Raiders dropping back to #12. If that was the 2nd trade then what was the 1st well…that went to the Bears trading up with the Jaguars to snatch up Ashton Jeanty who I was hoping would drop to the Saints.

With the 3rd trade of the draft the Chargers trade with the Dirty Birds to select DE Mykel Williams. Oh and with the 4th overall pick the New England Patriots selected LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell to sure up there offensive line in a new Mike Vrabel run team that loves tough, smart, hard nosed players. Campbell fits right in with Vrabel and will be a future hall of famer for the Patriots.

Most of the 1st round goes down as normal with as I already mentioned only 3 trades happening in the first 31 picks and all of them happening between picks 5-22 with the bulk coming with picks 5,6,10,12 & 15.

Now, I did say most of the trades happened as the major trade for this fan base happened with #32 and the new Saints regime calling into some old friends in Philadelphia to grab pick #32 and select Ole Miss Quarterback Jaxson Dart. The most recent news of Carr was too much for this organization and instead of picking a qb too high they got a pretty good one at the bottom of the round for a heck of a deal. Here is what NFL.com stated about Dart:

“Three-year SEC starter who saw improvement in play and production season after season. Dart has a stocky build and average physical attributes but good makeup and intangibles. He’s fairly accurate and rarely overcomplicates things for himself. He won’t strike anyone as a running quarterback, but he can find tough yards on the ground. He can make full-field reads but looks more comfortable grazing from the trough of the simple. He will need to work with better anticipation and decisiveness to win in tight windows as a pro. Teams might see physical and play similarities between Dart and Brock Purdy but such a pathway for Dart likely requires a balanced, ball-control passing attack that allows him to manage the game instead of driving it.”

Saints head coach Kellen Moore attended the Ole Miss pro day in Oxford and after the workout QB Jaxson Dart talked about the conversations he’s been having with the Black & Gold that included questions on his day to day mentality. Who he is a person and his qualities as a leader which is exactly the questions needed to be answered for someone who could be taking the reigns of a franchise sooner rather than later.

The 2025 NFL Draft class is rounding into shape, and we’re getting a clearer picture of some of the top prospects and the position groups with the most depth.

The top prospect on the board is Colorado’s Travis Hunter, a rare talent with the potential to start at the NFL level as either a wide receiver or cornerback. After Hunter, Penn State stud Abdul Carter, Michigan standout Mason Graham, Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty are some of the premier players in this draft class.

The running back, tight end and offensive tackle positions seem to be the deepest and strongest on the offensive side of the ball. On defense, the edge defender group is as deep as we’ve seen in several years, dominating the projected top 50. There are also more impact defensive backs this year than a year ago, with plenty of options on all three days of the draft, specifically on Days 2 and 3.

With the Saints having so many holes on this team specifically playmakers on both sides of the ball one would hope that we will hear their named called early and often as they should be able to make waves in the draft either with trading picks or players. Head Coach Kellen Moore almost has a 1 year mulligan but Mickey Loomis does not have that luxury and this draft will be huge for this organization.

COMPANION PLANTING

Companion planting is a fantastic way to make the most of your garden space and protect plants from insects. A simple example of saving space by companion planting is to plant radishes and carrots side by side. One of the most famous examples of companion planting is the three sisters model that incorporates corn, beans, and squash into the same garden area:

• Beans provide corn with nitrogen.

• Corn provides climbing stalks for the beans.

• Squash helps prevent weed growth and keeps animal pests away.

Companion planting is used for pest management through three different methods:

• With smells: Plants can emit odors to attract insects, repel insects, or mask other plants.

• By attracting predators or parasitoids: Parasitoids lay eggs inside other insects while predator in-sects eat other insects. Creating a habitat and providing food for predators and parasitoids can help you better manage garden pests.

• By being visually distracting: Insects can easily find gardens that have the same visual cues such as leaf shape or color from target plants. Having a variety of plants with different colors, textures, and heights makes it harder for pests to find your garden.

Brassicas:

• Some brassica crops such as arugula and mustard can be trap crops for flea beetles.

• Sage and thyme can reduce diamondback moth numbers in brussel sprouts.

• Onion, nasturtium, and thyme can help reduce pests in broccoli.

• Marigold, nasturtium, and onion can help reduce cabbage worms in cabbage.

Tomatoes:

• Some studies have shown that marigolds and basil can help reduce thrip populations.

• Companion planting with basil may even help promote growth of tomatoes.

Squash and pumpkins:

• Squash and pumpkins need pollinators to successfully grow. Planting flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies will help these vegetables grow.

• Cucumber beetles can be pulled away from other cucurbits by planting blue hubbard squash that attracts squash beetles, cucumber beetles, and squash vine borer.

• Marigold and nasturtium can reduce cucumber beetle and squash bug damage.

• Sweet alyssum and African marigold can increase enemy of aphids to reduce aphid damage and increase squash yield.

Sweet corn:

• Flowering plants such as buckwheat, sunn hemp, and cowpea have been shown to increase parasitoids and insect predators of corn earworm

CITRUS GREENING DISEASE

You may be aware by now that Huanglongbing (HLB), known as Citrus Greening Disease, has been confirmed in Mis-sissippi. USDA APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) has confirmed HLB was present in plant tissue samples collected from several residential locations in Harrison County, Mississippi. As a result, a STATEWIDE QUARANTINE for citrus has been issued for Citrus Greening Disease.

So, what does this mean for Mississippians? A statewide quarantine means it’s still acceptable to sell or move citrus plants within the quarantined area, which is the State of Mississippi but, one cannot move citrus plants across state lines, either in or out without going through USDA protocol. You can find more information at https://www.usda.gov/.

Citrus Greening is a bacterial infection of citrus plants. The disease colonizes in the phloem tissue, re-ducing the plant’s ability to transport nutrients. It is one of the most serious citrus diseases in the world. There is no cure. Once infected, most trees die within a few years. An infected tree can remain asymptomatic, serving as a source of bacteria that infects other trees. Over time, an infected tree will start producing fewer fruit that are par-tially green, smaller, irregularly shaped, and taste bit-ter. Leaves may show asymmetrical and blotchy mottling. Trees may show twig dieback and premature fruit drop.

In the United States, HLB is spread by a tiny insect called the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama). It is a vector, carrying and spreading the disease to other hosts using its piercing-sucking mouth parts. Eggs are yellow-orange and almond-shaped. They are often tucked inside crevices and leaf folds. Nymphs are difficult to see, but leave behind waxy, white excretions on plants. Adult psyllids are gnatsized, only about 1/8-inch long with mottled brown wings. The last two seg-ments of their antennae are black. When approached, they jump or fly.

While the disease poses no health threat to people or animals, it has devastated millions of acres of cit-rus trees throughout the United States and abroad. Citrus greening is currently found throughout Georgia, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is also found in portions of Alabama, California, Louisi-ana, South Carolina, and Texas. Although it has recently been detected in Mississippi, it’s possible HLB has been here for some time.

KEEPING YOUR PETS HAPPY AND SAFE THIS EASTER HOLIDAY

With the warmth of spring in the air and Easter just a hop away, you and your family are likely preparing for a holiday of festive egg hunts, sweet chocolatey treats, and joyful gatherings. However, please remember some holiday traditions aren’t the safest decision for our furry friends.

One popular Easter tradition that is life threating for our pets is to receive treats containing chocolate. While we’d never advise anyone to skip out on enjoying a tasty chocolate bunny or candy-filled egg, be sure to keep them out of your pet’s reach as chocolate can be harmful to them. Chocolate is dangerous for our pets because it has ingredients like theobromine and caffeine that are toxic to our pets and can make them very sick when consumed.

If you’ve never seen chocolate poisoning in animals before, here are some symptoms to watch for if your pet is experiencing chocolate poisoning: vomiting, diarrhea, heavy breathing, nausea, and seizures. If you notice your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, contact a local emergency animal clinic right away. It only takes one unguarded chocolate bunny to be fatal for our furry friends. Instead, treat your pet(s) to non-chocolate homemade goodies as a safe alternative to include your pet in this year’s celebration. You can give your dog a boiled egg or make a tuna snack shaped like a bunny or duck for your cat, and we promise they’ll love it.

Another very common tradition during this time is gifting baby animals like bunnies or ducklings. Remember, they may be small now, but they will grow up very fast and will need lots of care and love in those first few months. They’re not just a day of gift—they’re a longterm commitment. So, if you’re thinking about bringing one home, take time to research what they need. Bunnies need hay, chew toys, and a secure place to live and ducks need a safe space, water to swim in, and a buddy to keep them company as well.

However, if you’ve done your research and are ready for the commitment, then Easter can be a very special moment to welcome a bunny or duck into your home forever. That said, Easter is ultimately a day meant to bring a warm sense of community and togetherness for both people and their pets. With a little extra care and planning, you and your furry (or feathered!) friends can have a wonderful Easter. Also, if you’re not too sure if your family is ready for a bunny or a duckling this year, give an adorable pup or kitty a chance to be your forever easter treat by visiting the Louisiana SPCA and give an animal in need a loving home and a second chance at happiness.

Looking to adopt a pet or meet our honorary Easter bunny? Visit www.louisianaspca.org/ adopt to learn more about how you can meet your next fur-ever friend.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Phoebe is a young white mixed breed dog with tan markings and Daphne is a smaller, tan, terrier mix. Both are young and energetic, but sweet. They love people and do well together and with other dogs. Phoebe and Daphne are like so many other shelter dogs, waiting for someone to give them some attention, a kind word, a treat, take them out to the play yard or for a little walk. They are not asking much, but what they really want is a home and a person to bond with.

How is it possible that two very adoptable dogs have been at the shelter for five months? Sadly, it is because shelters are so overcrowded with dogs and there are not enough people adopting them. Before you buy a dog, visit your local parish shelter and meet some of the wonderful dogs that have been waiting for months to find a home. You can meet Phoebe and Daphne at St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services on Hwy 36 in Lacombe. However, there are other great dogs in need of a home in every shelter. Please support your local animal shelter’s efforts to find homes for pets rather than having to euthanize them.
