Tony’s Take

DOGE BALL: A REVISION OF THE OLD SCHOOLYARD GAME, 2025

When many of us were kids, we played a game called dodgeball. The premise was simple: a bunch of kids would be inside a rather large circle and a number of other kids were on the outside. A lightweight rubber ball was used to throw at the people in the circle, trying to hit one or more and eliminate them from the circle. The winner was the last person in the circle and eventually he or she would get tagged and then the two groups of kids would switch places, letting the throwers get to be the targets and the targets the throwers.

Today, the new administration has dusted off the old game and given it a more somber tone. DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency, has been throwing their ball at thousands of federal workers, inside the circle of their jobs but also players not necessarily following the rules of the game. Although the Biden administration and, to be fair, the last four or five presidential adminstrations have told the players in a differing degree, that their jobs wouldn’t have to be performed within the circle of normal workday environments and even told to skate through without causing a ripple in the government atmosphere and they could keep and even abuse their positions and pay grades.

Skate and abuse they did. To the tune of trillions of dollars, looking at the startling increase of the national debt during the past eight years. Projects with no sensible meaning, personal actions paid for by the government, loafing, sleeping and double-dipping on the job has been commonplace for a sizable sector of the federal work force. And now they are paying the price for doing things they were taught were wrong but went along with the atmosphere for years.

Some good players have been caught up in the DOGE machinery as tens and soon to be hundreds of thousands of bureaucrats will have to fake a legitimate resume’ in an attempt to keep their lifestyle from falling over a cliff. Most of the responsible workers will either get their former jobs back or given something comparable but speed and shock are necessary to begin the reformation of the federal worker. Oversight positions must be the most thoroughly vetted as decades of bad habits, laziness, arrogance and entitlement are purged out.

There must be a layer of federal workers between Congress and the various bureaus that receive their entitlements. These workers would woodshed the entitlements into roughed out budgets for projects their Secretaries want to accomplish, making sure the dollars were being controlled by Congress for those projects being undertaken. To allow department heads to toss a billion dollar budget at a group of upper and middle level bureaucrats without accountability has led to the problems we now face.

Too many federal workers don’t give a damn about the American taxpayer. All they care about is keeping a cushy job, skating through for the most part, and being offended when a member of the public dares question their methods or systems of getting funded to the right places. To say this move was overdue is the understatement of the year. Our national debt was less than a trillion dollars when Ronald Reagan took office and he and six other presidents have allowed their bureaucratic maze to rob the American taxpayer blind, increasing the national debt to levels 36 times the 1980 figure. Four Republicans, three Democrats. Shame on all of you, if you even remember what shame is. Now one of those seven is doing something about it and the move towards reducing and even removing the national debt is under way. Unsupervised children always get in trouble and an unsupervised bureaucracy is even worse. Let’s see what the next four years brings.

EARLY SEASON LAWN CARE.

When looking at the yearly calendar from above, March is seen as a transition month between the cool and warm seasons. Daily temperatures start rising, but nighttime temperatures are still cool. A lot of people enjoy this time of year, including the turfgrass plants that make up your home lawn.

The common turfgrass species grown as lawns in the deep south aren’t originally from the deep south. Centipedegrass evolved in Southern China, St Austinegrass evolved in Africa and South America, bermudagrass evolved in Africa, and zoysiagrass evolved in East Asia. The common denominator in all four situations is that they all evolved in warm climates. That is precisely why they work so well as lawns during our long, humid growing season.

However, the winter months present an issue because the days become shorter and the weather turns cold. In response, the grass plants slow their growth and enter a dormant state where they wait until the weather becomes more favorable for growth. This is the exact position we are in now. Our warmseason turfgrasses are on the cusp of coming out of dormancy and starting to produce new leaves, stolons, and rhizomes because the weather is slowly warming up. We refer to this time as the spring greening period.

Allow time for your lawn to fully awaken from dormancy before making fertilizer or herbicide applications. Most folks feel the need to get out and work in the yard as soon as there are a couple of warm days in a row. One way to help determine when the lawn is out of dormancy is to wait until it has been mowed three or four times. Others prefer a calendar date to help remind them of when to get started, and the first day of April works well for most gardeners in our area. Commence mowing as soon as the lawn starts producing new growth. Make sure to follow the recommended mowing heights for your species of turfgrass. Some folks might tell you to scalp the lawn or cut it very low at the beginning of the season. This can cause harm, especially if the mower blade damages the crown of the plant. Common recommended mowing heights can be found online through your local county extension service.

Before fertilizing, it’s helpful to have a current soil analysis report to know what plant nutrients are deficient in your soil. This is something that can be done now in preparation. The first thing to look at on a soil report is the current pH of the soil. This is the most important aspect of plant nutrition because it directly relates to nutrient availability. The second most important aspect is individual nutrient concentration. Follow the recommendations on the soil report to modify pH and add specific plant nutrients. If you have a good soil pH and no deficient nutrients, then a basic lawn fertilizer product (nitrogen) is all that’s needed.

Annual weeds are easily controlled by using pre-emergent herbicides. An annual weed completes its entire lifecycle in a year or growing season. These plants start from a seed every year. Pre-emergent herbicides are meant to be applied over the top of a lawn where the product makes its way to the soil level and creates an herbicide barrier. When the seed germinates, the herbicide layer eliminates it as the seedling grows through it. The gardener never sees the weed. The general recommended date for applying pre-emergent herbicides to lawns in this area is the first half of February. Not all weeds germinate at one time, so you can still apply pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn now. For weeds already growing in the lawn, wait until April to use a post-emergent spray.

The last thing to focus on during the spring greening period is irrigation. We have experienced extreme drought-like weather over the last couple of years, and it can be mitigated through supplemental irrigation. Be prepared to irrigate the lawn if the weather turns dry. Apply irrigation in the morning hours if possible. Aim for long, infrequent irrigation events until consistent rain patterns return. -0-

Hi, Everyone! email me! PaulaJ3036@gmail.com

Hurray! Spring is in the air! Birds are gathering around the feeders, temperatures are warming up, the squirrels are playing in the street and in yards. Mardi Gras has come and gone! Soon we will be Springing Forward for Daylight Savings Time! No more freezing temperatures! We will have other things to worry about. But for now, lets just enjoy the happiness of Spring and everything wonderful it has to offer!

Have you started planting your seeds yet for those beautiful flowers and tasty fruits and vegetables? I just can’t seem to get started with all that right now. But, I plan to soon. Guess I am a bit like my Penguin friend. I am all ready for the wonderful flowers and warm breezes but still have that chilly feeling down inside, waiting for that unexpected blast of cold to come down one last time. Let me tell you about my chilly little friend. She is painted on a 5”X5”X1/2” wooden block which can either stand alone, be placed on a small easel, or you can glue a small wooden block to the back. I first base coated the surface with Petal Pink, then using a sea sponge, I sponged on Buttermilk and Crystal Blue. Traced on the pattern, painted the outside of the penguin Black, inside Warm White, whatever color yellow or orange you want for the beak and feet. The flowers are done with a filbert brush that is double loaded with a lighter and darker value color blended no shading or highlighting or needed. The same with the leaves and stem. The ice patch is Crystal Blue shaded with Deep Midnight Blue and streams of white highlights. Even though she is standing on an ice patch now, she knows that things will soon be warm and sunny soon, all she has to do is wait and things will fall into place.

Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But I know it will be lots of fun.

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

In 1980, the United States national debt was 914 billion dollars, or about twice as much as the wealth of Elon Musk and under a trillion. Today, the national debt is north of 36 trillion dollars.

Ronald Reagan’s eight years increased the debt to 2.6 trillion dollars and George Bush Sr. had a 1.4 trillion increase in his four years to 4.07 trillion. Bill Clinton actually had a year that the national debt was reduced and in 2001 the national budget was balanced for the first time in many decades. Clinton left office with a 10.2 trillion national debt, only increasing the debt 4.1 trillion over eight years. George Bush II added 4.5 trillion during his eight years.

Barack Obama’s eight years only increased the debt to 13.8 trillion or an increase of 3.6 trillion during his two terms. During Donald Trump’s first term, the debt skyrocketed to 26.9 trillion or nearly doubling, a 13.1 trillion dollar increase. Joe Biden’s term added another 8.6 trillion on the coattails of Trump’s huge increase, coming in at 35.5 trillion. This puts our sovereignty at a serious risk.

So - an increase of nearly 20 trillion dollars or nearly 60% of the debt has been added during the eight years of Trump and Biden. Much of the increase is the interest owed on the debt but the majority of the debt is increases has been from billions of misspent money by the bureaucratic labyrinth in Washington, D.C. Money to programs implemented by Obama and Biden for the most part and the economic shutdown of America for nearly two years from the Covid era under Joe Biden.

Although most of our presidents have done a commendable job in keeping the debt increases within reason, money given to programs with little or no government oversight has created at least 50% of the debt, factoring in interest. Trump’s DOGE efforts will whittle away at the 36 trillion number while getting the existing budgets balanced or creating a surplus which could be used to pay off much of the debt. But the five other presidents preceding and following Trump should have come up with their own version of DOGE to keep the debt within reasonable bounds.

A possible solution to this problem is for the debtors, mostly domestic sources, agreeing to a reduction in interest rates or even freezing interest to zero for the next four years. DOGE is doing what it can and Cabinet Secretaries, in lockstep with Trump, are creating atmospheres and policies that will either reduce costs or increase revenues from their venues. Another source of income could be the United States receiving some of the billions in payback for the money they have invested in countries who have reached stabilization because of American aid. Decreasing American funding, to be replaced by the world’s democracies and non-threatening dictatorships, for organizations like NATO, should be a serious part of Trump’s discussions with foreign leaders.

The free world has ridden the American coattails for too long. If America is going to be the protector, the shining city on the hill, the rest of the world should pay for that service. Most countries put very little into their military; Trump should ask for a meaningful share of that once essential budgetary item. And the United States must demand payment in a timely manner.

With U.S. balanced budgets over the next 12 years and a change in the way the United States lends money and spends money through its bureaucratic maze, whose manpower is being reduced by 50% within the next four years, America could have a national debt reduced to less than a trillion dollars by 2036. And America will still be the shining city on the hill, showing the rest of the world how to do things. Let’s hope.

Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favors. This time I ask you this special one. Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times, for three days and your favor will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.T.O.

Well, here is another article concerning our beloved New Orleans Saints. I promise I won’t go on and on about the same issues and problems that everyone has been talking about for the previous couple of years. You can blame the owner, this player or that player or even the coaches and especially the head coach. However, when it comes down to it the issues that have turned the Saints from Champs to Chumps and back in the rankings of one of the laughing stocks of the NFL. So without further or do the main reason for the Saints problems is none other than ….MICKEY LOOMIS! I am not going to break down all of the issues that Loomis has brought to the Saints because this article would turn into a long and boring novel. But, if we have to narrow it down then we can do it with just 2 statements from Loomis:

1) I believe that Dennis Allen is a good coach!

2) I think that this team is a winner and that Derek Carr is the quarterback that can take us there.

These are 2 of the most idiotic statements that a man in his position has made in the NFL and this comes after the New York Giants traded Saquon Barkley, stated he would not run for 2,000 plus yards and he ends up leading the league in rushing the same season for another team. Therefore, I will use the rest of the space that I have for this article to post a very large graphic with how I feel!

Physical activity can be good for your physical and mental health. Possible health benefits of physical activity include lowered body fat and blood pressure, stronger bones, and improved self-esteem. It is common to consider physical activity as going to the gym, but gardening is another way to be active. As with any physical activity, there is also risk for injury when gardening. A way to minimize risk is to keep in mind proper movement and tool use. Today I am going to provide tips to help you avoid injury when out in the garden.

Don’t do any gardening task that you are not prepared for. Activities to prepare may include exercises such as squats, toe raises, lunge stretches, or bicep curls. When lifting heavy objects while gardening, squat and use your leg muscles rather than your back. When weeding, it is best to kneel or sit down rather than bend over, and consid-er using a mat or knee pads to provide cushion. One foot should be kept on the ground for support when kneeling, with leg positions alternating every few minutes. It helps to break a large task into several smaller ones. This avoids overexertion and gives more opportunities for hydration. It is also a good idea to avoid physical repetition by switching up activities about every 20 minutes. Always keep in mind your personal limits.

A raised bed reduces how much you have to hunch over to interact with the garden. Using tools with proper length and ergonomic handles will assist in keeping your wrist and back straight when using each tool. Make sure to always use the cor-rect tool for the job.

Ask for three favors: one business, two impossible. Say nine Hail Mary’s for nine days with a lighted candle. Pray, whether you believe or not. Publish on the ninth day. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised, read, glorified and loved today and everyday throughout the world forever and ever. Amen. Your request will be granted no matter how impossible it may seem.

GROWING HERBS

Herbs are a special group of plants used for flavoring and scents. Many herbs used in flavoring foods and teas (culinary herbs) can be grown in Mississippi gardens. Most herbs should be grown in full sun, but a few tolerate light shade. They prefer a well-drained soil of medium fertility with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. An organ-ic mulch in summer benefits the plants.

Herbs that can be grown in Mississippi are annuals that are planted every year, biennials that are planted in the fall and flower the following year, hardy perennials that come back year after year, and tender perennials that may survive a mild winter but of-ten need to be treated as annuals or protected from freezing tem-peratures.

You can start most popular herbs from seeds. Many of the perennial herbs are propagated by stem cutting, layering, or crown divisions. Annual, and some perennial, herb plants are sold at nursery and garden centers, and seeds and plants are offered by many mail order catalog companies. Because herbs are used in very small amounts, just a few plants of each type may be enough. If you want a large quantity of a particular herb, such as sweet basil for making pesto, plant the herb in the vegetable garden. Otherwise, prepare a small area espe-cially for herbs so that they can be enjoyed for their appearance as well as fragrance.

Herbs have few pests, which is good, because there are few if any pesticides approved for use on these plants. When planting herbs in the vegetable garden, protect them from pesticides used on vegetables. Grow herbs started from containers, so they can be set in the garden without disturbing the roots. Borage and dill are two herbs that do not transplant well if bareroot. Either scatter seeds in the garden where these herbs are to grow, or start plants in con-tainers.

The flavors and scents of herbs are caused by oils in the plant tissue. High fertilization, excess moisture, and shade result in low oil content and weak flavor. The oil content in many herbs is at its highest just before the plants begin to flower.

GET READY FOR PAWDI GRAS 2025!

Looking for a tail-wagging good time for your pets and family? Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 9th and join us for Pawdi Gras—where Mardi Gras meets the Super Bowl in one epic celebration!

Presented in the end zone by Plaquemines Parish Seafood Fest, Pawdi Gras will kick off at the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, 8022 Hwy. 23, in Belle Chasse. This fun filled day is all about celebrating pets and support of The Louisiana SPCA and pet families in need, especially in Plaquemines Parish. For the fun and safety of everyone attending, make sure to leash and harness your pet, dress comfortably, bring your pet’s ID tags, and stay hydrated.

Pawdi Gras Game Plan

Here is everything you can look forward to:

Rush into the celebration with the pre-party tailgate. Root for your favorite Puppy MVP at the Louisiana SPCA’s Puppy Bowl. Get in the game with pet- and people-friendly activities for the entire family. Dance the day away with a live DJ playing festive Pawdi Gras beats. Enjoy delicious food and drinks from local restaurants and food trucks. Draft an adoptable pup and add them to your forever team. Find the perfect parade spot and catch some amazing throws. Score a touchdown at the post-parade party.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

START volunteers had the pleasure of adopting out seven cats and kittens to loving homes this past weekend. Here are a few of the lucky kitties who are now being treated like feline royalty in their new homes.

Haiden no longer has to fend for herself on the street.

Our volunteers are so grateful to everyone who has opened their hearts and homes to include rescued pets. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization if you are considering adding a pet to your family. A rescued pet is waiting there for you.
