It’s 9:30 AM in the offices of Metro Plus as David and Katie prepare this final edition of newsprint production and physical distribution as usual. Nothing has really changed as we have taken great pains to make sure that the first April issue of Metro Plus will not be a shock to your routine, yet offer the possibility of positive changes in both editorial readability and selection and results for the buyers, sellers and advertisers who made this type of publication so popular beginning in the 1960’s.

We outlined the reasons for our move to complete digital printing and distribution through computers, tablets and smart phones in our last two issues. The U.S. market approaches saturation in smart phone sales and nearly everyone has at least a basic knowledge and need on how to navigate a computer. Pricing for basic computers is now less than for a phone in many cases and more users are viewing their computer findings on smart televisions or television screens that leave the average computer monitor in the dust. Most homes, too, have at least one computer.

Leaving physical print on newsprint quality paper is not that hard a deal. One, the quality of newsprint has declined, two, fewer publication printers spend the money to invest in quality presses and three, many have abandoned newsprint paper in light of its diminishing quality and the Draconian increase in pulp paper stock prices coming from our Pacific Northwest and Canada…..30% or more in the past two years.

Social media, too, has eroded our business. Facebook and its “family” of Instagram, Linked In,Twitter, YouTube, TikTok and others have either directly impacted our results or distracted the casual reader/consumer away from the corner store where one could pick up a copy of the latest bargains and sales. We made efforts over the past twenty years to add editorial like fishing columns, crafts, pets, sports, agriculture and political and social commentary to retain and replace much of our earlier readers and it does work. But that move will work much better from the Cloud than even gloss paper printing which would necessitate a change from a biweekly to monthly publishing schedule and a much higher print cost with accompanying price increases from us to you.

If we didn’t think the market still existed for this type of publication, we wouldn’t continue. But the changes we are making and envisioning in the next six to 12 months will enhance our appeal and therefore, our results and satisfaction. We can’t force the status quo thinkers to make the adjustment without some anxiety but in the words of the real world, “where else ya gonna go?! We’ve had a lot of hand-wringing and attitude adjustments to suffer for the past year or two and we are doing it now before the world turns us into nostalgia.

The site is somewhat active though not completely ready to use to read Metro Plus as we continue to remodel our look and elements of the publication. It’s still free and we will be contacting 60,000 area businesses and homes every two weeks by email to go to our website and read Metro Plus and its accompanying email advertising that will resemble inserts in paper products. We’ll miss it as much as you because we’ve always believed in physical print. Now the world wants another outlet and we either have to go along or fall on our sword. But as we convert to digital without paper, it has shown us the benefits of doing so and like anything else in life, change is inevitable. It’s still us coming up with the product, not artificial intelligence. It’s kinda like going into the outfield in “Field Of Dreams”. It’s a new, exciting adventure. Let’s plant a spring vegetable garden!

Vegetable gardeners throughout the region are preparing for the spring summer growing season. A lot of folks within the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan Area find themselves waiting until Good Friday (Friday, April 7, 2023) to get their spring vegetable garden planted. At the LSU AgCenter, we recommend planting on or after March 15 for southern Louisiana gardens (April 1 for our northern counterparts). The chance of a frost is greatly reduced after March 15. However, that doesn’t mean that it never happens. Look at what happened last week! Check local weather reports and extended forecasts for information on late season frosts. Ultimately, planting early is essential for natural and organic production systems. Be ready to cover tender transplants in case a late spring frost decides to come out way.

Where do I put my vegetable garden?

Access to direct contact sunlight is a must for vegetable garden plants. These plants need sunlight to drive photosynthesis and create much needed energy so that they are productive and provide good yields. Surface and internal drainage are also important for optimum vegetable production. Puddles that remain for days after an extended rain event are an indicator of poor drainage. Avoid sites with poor drainage or start doing things to improve drainage such as utilizing drainage swales, strategically placed trenches, or increasing the grade by adding soil. The last thing to consider when finding a location for the vegetable garden is to have it close by. Gardens placed at the back of the lot will often get overlooked and forgotten. Keep the garden close to the action so that its easy to do garden tasks. Satisfy these three requirements and watch your garden become more and more productive as you gain more experience growing food at home.

What do I plant on my vegetable garden?

Now is the time to prepare a warm season vegetable garden, the most popular veggie garden season. Some of the typical crops include bell peppers, cantaloupes, cucumbers, eggplants, hot peppers, southern peas, specialty peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes, and watermelon. How do I fertilize my vegetable garden?

Plants receive nutrition through root uptake of elements and minerals from the surrounding soil. Existing in-ground gardens should be soil tested early in the year to determine current soil pH and nutrient levels. The ideal situation for all in-ground vegetable gardens is to have “High” and “Very High” levels of each nutrient listed on the soil test report. The concept behind a basic fertilizer program is to provide nutrients that are found to be deficient. Both conventional and organic sources are available for each of the common nutrients needed by plants for normal growth and development.

Containerized vegetable gardens are treated slightly different. Potting soils and bulk garden soils are somewhat different that native topsoil found out in the yard. Native topsoil (real soil) is made from the weathering of parent material and bedrock. This provides certain nutrients depending on where the soil originated. In potting soils and bulk garden soils, a mixture if various organic components are put together so that they have similar physical characteristics of topsoil. Some topsoil products like Miracle-Gro Garden Soil include a fertilizer in the mix. Read the product labels to determine if this is the case. Use a complete fertilizer at the labeled rate for potting soils with no initial fertilizer input.

How do I control weeds in my vegetable garden?

Weeds drive a lot of gardeners mad. Plan a weed control program during the initial planning of the vegetable garden. The first layer of weed control starts with the proper spacing of plants in the garden. Second layer of control should be addressed using a mulch to cover bare ground. Scouting the garden every few days and physically removing weeds as they appear is a third layer of control. Lastly, herbicide options are available. Pre-emergent herbicides are applied to control weeds as they germinate. Post-emergent herbicides are used to control weeds that are currently growing. You will find selective post-emergent products that can be sprayed over-the-top of vegetable plants to control certain types of weeds. Organic options are available as well. Make to read and follow the product label before applying any type of herbicide.

Gia Marsh is a Belle Chasse Academy Little Gardener and recently learned about the antioxidants in dark colored vegetables like the garden purple carrots.  These were grown in the school’s

Belle Chasse Academy competed in their first Aerial Drone Competition. The competition was held in Ocean Springs, Mississippi and included middle schools and high schools from Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana. BCA participated in piloting teamwork matches, autonomous flight skills, and a team interview.

7th grader Sarah Blair was working on creating a model that shows ideal conditions for a mudslide in preparation of a research project about the impact that natural/ manmade disasters have on the earth.

The New Orleans Saints have had a bumpy road to the Super Bowl since 2009. The biggest culprits were the “No Call” against the Rams a few years ago and their near miss against Minnesota around the same period. But in Derrick Carr they have an underutilized player with a solid NFL pedigree that may not make Who Dats forget Drew Brees but at least make the reality palatable.

My biggest gripe against Sean Payton was his almost fanatic way of ignoring college quarterbacks as long as Number Nine was wearing the Black and Gold. Payton took a chance on the injured Purdue quarterback when Brees was on his way out of Miami and the rest built and solidified Peyton’s reputation as a quarterback guru/coach. But it was always Just Brees in New Orleans. No other person standing behind the center ever really had a chance to be The Man when Drew drew the attention of defenses for more than a decade.

The Saints also re-signed Michael Thomas, who will never remind fans of players allegedly more loyal to the Saints. Maybe Thomas’s injuries were part prima donna but maybe they were something else. At this point, who cares? The NFL South has taken a huge hit at quarterback the past season and offseason and the Saints are in an enviable position to move back into the forefront of the division at the offense’s most important position.

New Orleans also addressed a few situations at defensive tackle and hybrid with trades and the dealing may not be done. Will the Saints be a Super Bowl contender in 2023? That is a question for the late summer and fall. But in securing a happy-to-be-in-New-Orleans Derrick Carr, they have a vehicle that has the horsepower to return them to the playoffs and make them a scary, possibly feared team once again.

For now, the quarterback situation is settled. There will be little or no Swiss Army Knife, no oft-injured Jameis Winston or the relatively efficient but not inspirational Andy Dalton to talk about. Whether gas or electric, New Orleans has a brand-new Carr and whether it will be a sedan, sports two-seater or a turbo two-door is to be determined in coming months. Now the Saints can shift their focus to other areas of improvement for the immediate future and Saint fans can return to the Dome knowing that someone behind center has the resume’ to pull games out of the fire similar to Drew Brees. Carr won’t approach Bree’s prolific yardage and completed passes records but he will be more than a cypher in the Saints record books in ten years.

I just love the feel of the cooler temperatures,it is so refreshing. I was really thinking we were done with chilly nights since we had been having temperatures in the 70s and 80s. I am loving these cooler days as long as they last. Just not ready for those 90 and 100 degree temperatures, and the start of hurricane season.

With Spring and Easter just around the corner I decided to get into the mood. Although these bunnies and not necessarily Easter bunnies. These bunnies can be displayed for Valentines Day, Easter, and all thru Spring and maybe even summer. We all like a nice latte every once in a while and a snack to go with it. My bunnies have the latte and a nice carrot to go along as a snack. That carrot can be replaced with a cookie, an ice cream, or anything you like. Don’t like the brown bunnies, change the color to white or gray. Change the color of the background and the cup itself. You can even change the wording. I plan on painting a few more of these with the changes I just listed. Yes, I do plan on using this for Easter and on thru Summer. I really like the background of this piece. We don’t want to see physical print disappear but we can still get your favorite reading material to you. You’ll be able to print us out on your device and printer. AND IT’S STILL FREE!

To help adjust to this new reality, we will send 60,000 emails to businesses and homes into the areas that we service each two week publication period......St. Tammany and much of the area around metro New Orleans and four counties in Mississippi (three along the coast and Stone County, just north). These emails will be in the form of Metro Plus’s latest issue, with information included about our new email company. We will continue to email to help reach a readership that should equal or exceed our current audience. It should be a win-win situation.

Whether or not you receive an emailed issue, simply paste our website (below) into your website browser. If you don’t have a computer or other electronic tools vitally necessary to function in today’s environment, you should consider getting one soon or risk losing other resources to modernization. Hundreds of papers like me have gone out of business over the past 10 to 15 years. We won’t..with your help and understanding.

CHANGING THE COLOR OF HYDRANGEAS

The Hydrangea (or Hortensia) genus consists of about 70 plus species. Of these species, only about 5 are used extensively in the landscape. Hydrangeas are native to southern and eastern Asia. They are the most diverse species specifically in China and Japan. They are also found in North and South America. Hydrangeas are great plants for the garden whose many benefits have been well recognized by gardeners over the centuries. They provide floral and occasionally foliar interest beginning in late spring or early summer that often persists well into autumn.

Hydrangeas are also a very easy group of plants to grow, providing a great degree of satisfaction with minimal effort. The one requirement shared among the various species is the need for consistent moisture throughout the growing season and the need for water. This is reflected in the name, hydrangea, which can be translated from Greek to water (hydr) vessel (angeion) but, the name refers to the spherical shape of the open flower head.

Hydrangeas are a favorite among many Southerners. Their colorful blooms are a classic staple in many landscapes. They typically come in a variety of colors, including blue, purple, white, and pink. But did you know you can change the color of certain hydrangeas? With a little work and a lot of patience, you can change the color of bigleaf and mountain hydrangeas by adjusting the soil pH. To be clear, although we reference pH when discussing hydrangea flower color, it’s really the amount of aluminum that can be accessed by the plant from the soil that helps determine flower color. This accessibility of aluminum is the result of pH and amount of phosphorus. In other words, a lower pH allows aluminum to be soluble and absorbed by plants (unless phosphorus is high), and the flowers tend to be blue.

To change the flower color, first, find out the pH levels in the soil where your hydrangeas currently grow. You can do this by submitting a soil sample to your local Extension office for testing. The results will include your soil pH level, which determines the color of the blooms. Then, increase or decrease the soil pH to get the desired color. Use lime to increase soil pH or use sulfur to decrease soil pH. Blue hydrangeas need a pH between 5 and 5.5, while soil with a pH of 6 to 6.5 produces pink flowers. Purple can sometimes be achieved with a pH of 5.5 to 6. Just keep in mind, it won’t work with white flowers. The most effective way to change the soil pH and the color of the hydrangeas is to apply a liquid soil drench to the base of the plant once a month for three months. Ideally, this should happen in spring to early summer. To make pink flowers turn blue (lower the pH), dissolve 1 tablespoon of aluminum sulfate to a gallon of water and apply. To make blue flowers turn pink (raise the pH), dissolve 1 tablespoon of lime to a gallon of water and apply. Starting now, all dogs with heartworm disease that are adopted from the Louisiana SPCA will have their adoption fees waived! We will also be providing heartworm treatment for the adopted dog, and the adopter will only need to contribute a total of $175. Heartworm treatment is approximately $300 per dog, but we are taking care of a majority of the cost and waiving adoption fees so that adopters are still encouraged to take home our lovely adoptable dogs. The adopter will be responsible for scheduling a heartworm consultation (cost is $25) with our Community Clinic here at the LASPCA. Once that exam is finished, the adopter will schedule the first treatment and contribute a $150 copay towards that appointment.

It is important to talk to your vet about the treatment plan for the stage of heartworm disease that your newly adopted dog is in. There are 3 stages of heartworms that may require different treatment protocols that your vet will be able to identify after your first consultation. In most cases, treatment involves an injectable drug, called melarsomine, that will be injected a total of three times over a period of about 30 days. The first appointment after the consult will be the first injection which will be followed by 30 days of rest. During this rest period, it is essential that you keep your dog kenneled with light activity. Your dog may be walked for 10-15 minutes so that they can use the bathroom, but they should not be unleashed where they are allowed to run freely. This is also not the time to be playing with them either, as tempting as it may be. It is important to their heath and longevity that you follow the rest plan before coming in the second time. The second and third injection may be given after the 30 day rest period and within 24 hours of each other. These injections may cause muscular pain and therefore your dog may be given pain medication. At this point, complete rest is extremely important.

Complete rest is important because the as the adult worms inside your newly adopted dog start to die, they begin to break up and can be carried to the lungs and become reabsorbed into the body. The resorption process may take weeks or months and is considered a dangerous period for your dog as it can cause post-treatment complications. Your dog should be kept as quiet and relaxed as possible during this time. Heartworms untreated can live in your dog for up to 5-7 years, so testing your dog and keeping them on prevention can help avoid this disease.
