Tony’s Take
TIGERS LOOK AS SOLID AS CAN BE STARTING SEC PLAY
It’s as good a start to the pre-SEC baseball season as they have had in a long time. After blitzing Xavier 18-4, the LSU Tigers began their SEC season against one of the weakest teams in the league, the Missouri Tigers. Playing at home, the Tigers rode a 12-game win streak into league play last week, ranked second in the country behind defending national champion Tennessee.
LSU approaches springtime with one bona fide All American, first baseman Jared Jones. Jones is batting .448 as of last Thursday and is one of the two leading home run and rbi leaders on the squad. The leadoff hitter is Derek Curiel, batting .450 while Jake Brown and Monster Milam are hitting .391. second baseman Daniel Dickinson boasts a .373 average, Josh Pearson .351 and Chris Stanfield .327. The only starter is the new catcher, Luis Hernandez, still batting a respectable .275.
The team’s .346 average is one of the nation’s three best as well as leading the conference. A top eight standing with 10.4 runs scored per game, third in the SEC goes along with the league-leading hits number.
On the other side of the ledger, 3rd baseman Michael Braswell is having his troubles with a .182 average while dark horse hitter Ashton Larson is not where he wants to be, hitting .250. Backup catcher Cade Arrambide is only hitting .150. So catching goes from one of the Tiger’s strengths to one of its early season weaknesses, offensively. The Tigers are ninth nationwide in drawing bases on balls but nowhere close to the nation’s leading team for being hit by pitches.
How about fielding? A respectable 44th in the nation and fifth in the conference leaves room for much improvement.
The team’s strong starters possess an ERA of under 3.0, with Cade Anderson leading with a 2.08. They are above average in strikeouts and securing clutch third outs. Their ERA is 7th in the league. What little relief pitching that’s been necessary has been solid but there’s been no situation where a lights out closer has been necessary.
The biggest league (and national) disappointment is Texas A&M, a team compared to Tennessee’s powerful squad a few years ago. The Vols led the nation in winning percentage that year but lost in its bid to win in Omaha. They made up for it last year with their first CSW title.
Again, the SEC is heavily favored to take it all in Omaha. Besides Tennessee and LSU and the previously mentioned Aggies, Arkansas is ranked 3rd nationally and Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas are 7th through tenth. Seven of 16 SEC teams are in the top ten while another seven are in the top 29. It wouldn’t be surprising to see five of the eight teams going to Omaha coming from the SEC and breaking the existing record for the number of teams from one league going to Omaha - 4 - also held by the SEC.

SPRING GARDENING IS ALMOST HERE.
As springtime approaches, home gardeners will start venturing out into the garden to start the process of pruning, planting, weeding, and fertilizing so that their landscapes look their best. Before we get down to the nitty-gritty details, it is important to walk through the yard and make observations. Think of it like a garden needs assessment. Examine all the plants in your landscape. The azaleas should be blooming and starting to put out some new growth. Tea roses should be full of leaves. Lawns should be turning green in patches. Crapemyrtles should be putting out new leaves. Examine everything, take notes, and review any notes from last year. Then you can prioritize different tasks and start your spring garden plan.
Refer to the checklist below for recommendations on things to do in the southern landscape during the month of March.
Gardening To-Do List for March
• Prune and deadhead cool-season bedding plants such as pansies, snapdragons, petunias, and violas. These plants will still look good and bloom throughout the month of March. Wait until April to switch them out with warm-season bedding plant options.
• Fertilize spring flowering bulbs while leaves are still good and green. After flowering, the leaves produce sugars (photosynthesis) and store them in the underground bulb for use in the next season when flowering. Proper care now will ensure success in the following years.
• Divide and transplant perennial herbs and flowers. Divide flowering perennials like black-eyed Susan and purple coneflower when clumps start to take over their allotted space in a flowerbed. Both plants are resilient and can be divided with a shovel. Replant into new areas or plant in pots to give to family and friends.
• Get ready to plant spring vegetables as soon as cold weather is gone. Gardeners in more northern areas will wait slightly longer. Vegetable plants have a better chance of producing bigger yields when planted early in the season. Vegetables to consider include bell peppers, cucumbers, hot peppers, tomatoes, squash, and zucchini. To view a more detailed chart of all vegetables grown in Louisiana, along with their planting dates, check out www.lsuagcenter.com and search for the Louisiana Vegetable Planting Guide. It also provides information on recommended varieties to use in your garden.
• Watch landscape trees as they start to produce leaves this month. A healthy tree will start leafing out throughout the canopy at about the same time. When sections or different branches within the canopy leaf out significantly later than others, you can tell that the tree is stressed. Several different environmental conditions can cause problems with our trees. Compacted soil in the root zone is one of the major issues. Other issues include poor surface drainage, physical root damage from digging near the tree, and originally being planted too low in the ground. Protect the soil in the immediate root zone of a tree by maintaining a 2-3 inch layer of mulch throughout the drip area.
• Do not fertilize the lawn just yet. Allow the warm-season turfgrass to completely green up before any applications of fertilizer. Take a soil sample now to learn which fertilizer to use later next month. Control any weed issues now while you wait. Selective herbicides can be applied over the top of the lawn to control most broadleaf weed issues.
• Be on the lookout for large (brown) patch disease in the lawn, especially if wet weather is expected in the extended forecast. Large patch disease is very problematic during the spring and fall. Damage appears as circles of yellow grass that eventually turn brown. This can happen at an alarming rate of speed. Look to apply a fungicide product to help prevent the spread of this disease. Look for lawn fungicides that contain propiconazole, myclobutanil, or azoxystrobin as the active ingredient. If a follow-up treatment is needed, use a different active ingredient in the follow application.

We sure have been seeing some crazy weather lately. I don’t like it one little bit. This really makes me worry, with hurricane season so close. Guess all we can do is bite the bullet and have that wait-see, let’s prepare attitude and do a lot of praying. I am getting too old for all of this! Hopefully by the end of April I will be done with physical therapy for the Achilles Tendon repair but I really don’t want to be running from a hurricane. Oh well, guess we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

On the lighter side of life. It’s Spring!!! Do you have flowers blooming yet? I was quite surprised to see flowers popping up and blooming from one of my large planters. I thought with the snow everything was dead, but No I actually have little white flowers showing their lovely faces. That put me in such a good mood I decided to paint something colorful and happy. What better way to do that than to have bright colors against a black background? Simply telling the dark night skies that there will be a brighter tomorrow with flowers, birds, and yes bunnies! This piece can hang on your door throughout Spring and Easter to bring a smile to your front door guests. I must admit this piece was very time consuming due to all the highlighting and shading, but it was so much fun to paint! I love the bright colors! The stars in the background give it that added feeling of a Spring night. Ok, so the bird should be nesting but he is enjoying the night breeze also. Just looking at this piece brings a little smile to my face. But, of course it won’t be around for long. My granddaughter, Carlea’, (who came home from college for Spring break) came over as I was putting the finishing touches to this and it was an instant.....I have to have this PLEASE!!! What Grandmother can say No? So this will be adorning her dorm room door at Mississippi College.
Well, that’s my project for this time. Hope you like it. What will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun!!!
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

With apologies to the late Glen Campbell, I begin this story as an update on my older granddaughter.
When last heard of, Kaleigh was headed to Ruston three plus years ago, to get her visually challenged life on track. The facility more than provided a means for the then 20-year old young lady to spread her wings and enter the world of adulthood. She did so with a bang and a thud, a relationship that at once opened and then closed doors and she returned home a more mature and wiser young lady.
A couple of dubious trips to California to see long-time “friends” who turned out to be less than reliable resources had Kaleigh finally decide a more sensible path for her future. A man who was a student at Ruston when Kaleigh was there had become a platonic friend and she kept up with him as he sought a future for himself. Last year, this gentleman found his calling in Wichita, Kansas, the state’s largest city and home to Encounter, one of the most sophisticated and inclusive learning and employment companies in the country dealing with the visually challenged. Having secured a good job there, this man reached out to my granddaughter and invited her to share his two bedroom apartment in Wichita and look into opportunities for her to seek a well-paying position while keeping her disability income intact by working at Encounter.
Kaleigh was overjoyed by the prospects of living in a cold winter weather city and with a person she had grown to know and trust. Although she has not applied for a job yet, Kaleigh says the team at Encounter is looking forward to her coming to Wichita and have encouraged her to join the company once she’s there and settled in. It will be a while before that happens because Kaleigh had also made the decision to get a guide dog. That process has played out to the point that once she’s moved to Wichita this spring and settled in for a period of weeks, she will have the opportunity to fly to upstate New Jersey to acquire her four-legged companion. She will have to spend a month in Jersey, getting to know her new companion, before the guide dog company allows her and her dog to fly to Wichita. And even before then, the dog-providing company will travel to Wichita to evaluate Kaleigh’s living environment to make sure its a suitable home for these highly trained animals. Most of the dogs are two to three years old, have been named and trained. Kaleigh will be placed amongst the dogs for each to seek out a partnership that will last the animal most of its lifetime and as bonding occurs, so does the training as a seeing-eye team.
A minus 12 degree day and snow up to here thighs only excited Kaleigh about a future in the southeast corner of Kansas, halfway between Oklahoma City to the south and Kansas City to the northeast. She now has the maturity and experience to handle this move. She’ll be close enough to visit after a long day’s drive and certainly far enough removed from her old environment to try new things and meet new people with her new companions. Like her trip to Ruston three years ago, Kaleigh is ready to “rock it” again, this time with a more realistic future and ability to mainstream into sighted life. She’ll do just fine.
SOIL ORGANIC MATTER
Healthy soil is essential when it comes to growing and maintaining healthy crops and backyard gar-dens.
One way to help keep soil healthy is to ensure there is adequate amounts of soil organic matter. What is soil organic matter (SOM)? Organic matter in the soil is composed of anything that once lived. It includes plant and animal remains in various states of decomposition, cells and tissues of soil organ-isms, and substances from plant roots and soil microbes.
Benefits of soil organic matter:
• Provide plants with nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous, and sulfur
• Help fight plant diseases and pests by providing habitats for soil organisms
• Easier for plants to root in soil to find air, water, and nutrients
• In dry, sandy soils, helps hold water
• In clayey, wet soils, help with draining and oxygen availability
• Provides a holding place for nutrients in soil that plants need
How can you maintain soil organic matter? To retain a proper SOM level, more organic matter needs to be added to the soil than is depleted from it. Organic matter is removed from the soil when crops are harvested, heavy tillage happens, and soil erosion occurs. How can soil organic matter be increased? Compost, cover crops, plant residues, organ-ic fertilizer, and other organic materials that are decomposed by microbes are great ways to add organic matter back into the soil.
How can you maintain soil health to reduce soil nutrient loss?
• Lessen the amount of tilling done to soil
• Use cover crops
• Keep soil in place with mulch
• Create a buffer around garden to minimize runoff
If soils are lacking nutrients, adding organic matter may be a great way to help improve soil quality.
Well, the last issue I talked about is how the New Orleans Saints need to fire Mickey Loomis! I will stand by that until they have the onions to do so. With that said, this issue will head back to the college ranks and more specifically the state of the LSU Athletic program. If you notice my graphic, 11 programs ranked inside the Top 25 with 9 of those ranked inside the Top 13 in the country. This includes National Championship contenders in Baseball, Gymnastics, Softball, Golf, Track, Women’s Basketball & Beach Volleyball. Now as amazing as this list is, there is one HUGE program that is missing from that list. That of course is Men’s Basketball with Matt McMahon at the helm. LSU lost its sixth straight game, 91-62 to No. 10 seed Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament to finish 14-18 on the season – its second losing season overall and in the SEC (3-15) in just three seasons of McMahon, who went 14-19 and 2-16 in his first season in 2022-23.
The Tigers lost two other games by 31 points this season – 89-58 to unranked Texas at home on Feb. 1 and 95-64 at No. 19 Kentucky on March 4 – and flirted with another 30-plus loss on to State as the Bulldogs (21-11, 8-10 SEC) led by as many as 32 points several times in the final minutes. Mississippi State’s 31-point margin of victory was its largest in SEC Tournament history, and that happened even though State coach Chris Jans, also in his third season, emptied his bench, using 13 players in all.
McMahon is somehow rumored to be back next season as LSU athletic director Scott Woodward has told those close to him. But this was notably mentioned a while back as Woodward does not do many interviews!
Woodward hired McMahon, so he will be slow to let him go partly for that reason. Also, LSU men’s basketball ranks near the bottom of the SEC in available NIL cash for players, which LSU powers that be plan to change dramatically with new NIL strategies.
And Woodward did sign McMahon to a seven-year contract at $2.8 million a year, which looks like a mistake now as McMahon would have likely come for a four- or five-year deal from Murray State, particularly in this short-sighted NIL-Portal era.
McMahon will likely need to make somewhat of a similar splash, as head football coach Brian Kelly did, in the portal before next season to go with his No. 19-ranked recruiting class coming in next season that includes three players.
“There has to be a reset button,” McMahon said after losing his final game of the season. Now, the reset might not be what McMahon wants it to be as it should include him and in my opinion bring back a fanfavorite and highly winning coach in McNeese State’s Will Wade.
I know what you are saying, LSU and Woodward fired him a few years ago, why would we go back to get him and why would he return?
It is fairly simple! He would immediately re-energize this program and prove that firing him was the wrong move for LSU, Woodward and anyone else that was involved in that dumbfounded decision. Sure, it might be a bad look initially for Woodward as he would have to grovel and beg for THE PEAR to return but ultimately would be seen as human and made a hero for seeing and rectifying the wrong that he made a few years ago.
As far as Wade goes, well he was the king before he left and went I-10 west to Lake Chuck to take the job at McNeese. So, he stayed in the state where he could have gone a ton of places and a return would just strengthen the lore of Wade with LSU and is rabid fan base!
Now, Wade is also rumored to be a top candidate for Ole Miss if their head coach does in fact take the Indiana job. This will not upset LSU fans with Wade but will enrage the base against the Athletic Administration for letting him go and then having to face him multiple times at a rival SEC school. The other spot Wade could land is NC State and even though in the once great ACC he would still have to compete with the likes of North Carolina and Duke just for recruits.
Now, even with his history why are teams still interested in The General, Will Wade? Well, McNeese just won its’ 2nd consecutive Southland Championship, marking back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and just the fourth-ever bid. Wade is on a dominant run with the Lake Chuck school, guiding the Cowboys to two Southland Conference titles and a 47-8, 36-2 record across two seasons.
McNeese is ranked No. 58 in the NET and No. 57 overall in KenPom, ahead of several Big Ten schools and other high-major programs. The Cowboys took No. 2 Alabama and No. 25 Mississippi State down to the wire, and they’ve won 22 of their last 23 games. Projected to be a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament, they’ll be a trendy upset pick, with a balance of good offensive and defensive numbers.
Wade has also had success at other mid-major programs. At VCU, he went 51-20 with two NCAA Tournament appearances in two seasons. At Chattanooga, he fell just short of two trips to the tournament with a pair of second-place conference finishes and a 40-25 record.
continued from Just Sports
In the end, I believe it is simple..the fans are enraged over a lack-luster basketball team and Will Wade his the guy who could emphatically change things and do it quickly.

COLD-DAMAGED PLANTS AND TURF
It’s been an unusual year for cold weather in our area. I’m not sure how much you like snow but, I’m certainly neither a fan of snow nor cold weather in general. I saw more than my share of snow while living in Oklahoma… where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain. Yes, the wind blows incessantly, much like the lyrics of Rogers and Hammerstein’s musical suggests, adding fuel to the “would be welcomed” fire of bitter cold. Here in the deep South, we generally see our coldest temperatures in January and February and, unfortunately, plants can be damaged by low temperatures. But, cold-damaged plants can often recover.
In the January issue of the ‘County Gardeners Extension Express’ newsletter two articles referenced the need to water plants before a freeze to add protection from radiant heat via soil moisture. But, what about after a freeze? After a freeze, check the soil around your plants. Plants may not be getting the water they need if the soil has dried out or if the water in the soil is frozen. Watering the area can help defrost the soil and provide your plants with an available source of moisture. Even injured plants need water. Luckily for us, we’ve gotten a sufficient amount of rainfall to eliminate the need for watering at this point in time.
While you may be tempted to add a little fertilizer to your plants to help speed their recovery hold off. If you fertilize too early you could encourage new growth before cold weather has gone. It’s best to wait until spring, as new growth begins, to apply the fertilizer application. Once the danger of frost has passed, an application of fertilizer can help speed recovery.
Don’t prune cold-damaged plants right away. The dead foliage looks bad, but will help insulate plants from further injury. Keep in mind, dormant tissue looks much like dead tissue in many instances. In the spring, assess the extent of the damage by scraping the bark with your fingernail. Cold-injured wood will be black or brown under the bark. To be certain where to prune, wait until plants begin to sprout new growth. In other words, be patient!
Herbaceous plants like impatiens and begonias that are damaged by the cold may collapse. If this happens, it’s best to cut them down and remove the plants to prevent fungal or bacterial problems from arising as they decay.
Seeing your lawn turn brown in late fall into early winter is a normal part of your lawn’s winter dormancy. Come spring time your lawn should rebound and begin producing new green growth. But when hard freezes hit, your turfgrass may be injured, especially lawns already stressed. Unlike bermuda and zoysia, neither St. Augustine nor centipede are cold tolerant grasses with St. Augustine being the least tolerant. Hence, why they aren’t grown much further than northern Mississippi.
Much like your landscape plants, hold off on fertilizing your lawn until soil temperatures have increased enough to promote a nice green-up. Although it’s weather dependent, this usually occurs in April. You may see some signs of light green-up early in the year but, hold off on fertilizing due to the potential of a late freeze damaging new growth. If your lawn, or areas of your lawn, does not recover in the spring, you may have to replace some of the grass with sod, sprigs, plugs, or seed depending on your grass type. Again, be patient!
MAKING LIFE FUN FOR YOUR PET!
Owning a happy pet is more than just providing them with a toy or a backyard to roam in. A happy pet needs excitement, challenges, and new experiences to keep their minds and bodies active. Imagine if your only daily activity was staring at the same toy—pretty boring, right? Pets feel the same way! Adding enrichment to their routine keeps them happy, engaged, and less likely to get into trouble when you’re away from home.
One awesome way to enrich your pet’s life is through brain games such as puzzle/treatdispensing toys. These games turn mealtime into a fun challenge. Also, kongs filled with peanut butter, snuffle mats filled with tasty treats, or hidden treats around the house can help keep your pet busy for hours and prevent destructive behaviors.
Another great activity for enriching their lives is by introducing your pet to new sights, smells, and sounds. Consider letting your pet sniff around during walks, introduce them to safe household scents, or try playing different sounds to help them get comfortable with common noises. A vacuum cleaner or washing machine might seem scary at first, but with slow exposure, they’ll learn it’s no big deal. Also, allowing them to explore different textures under their paws, like sand or gravel, adds a new layer of adventure to their day.
Furthermore, scheduling social time with your pet is another excellent method for making their lives more exciting. Playdates with other pets or outings to pet-friendly locations help build their social skills. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a meet-up with another furry friend, or even just visiting a new area. Also, don’t forget that dogs aren’t the only animals that enjoy being outside; cats love the outdoors, too. If trained correctly, your cat can be walked on a leash.
Animals in shelters need enrichment too and volunteering at your local animal shelter can help to bring joy to adoptable pets in need. Many shelters will have volunteers craft enrichment items for both dogs and cats to add a little fun to their day. Dogs love frozen peanut butter frisbees, tennis balls sprayed with exciting scents and treat-filled toilet paper rolls. Also, cats go crazy for tuna brownies, cardboard scratchers, and catnip socks.
If you live in the Orleans and Plaquemines parish area you can volunteer with us at Louisiana SPCA. Anyone 18 or older can volunteer alone or with a group to help make our animals’ lives brighter. When you’re ready to make a meaningful change in a shelter animal’s life, you can visit louisianaspca.org to learn more today!

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Our volunteers are so grateful to everyone who has opened their hearts and homes to include rescued pets. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization if you are considering adding a pet to your family. A rescued pet is waiting there for you.
He appeared at a little fast food restaurant one day with his brother. Both boys are very friendly, greeting people who drive up to order a sandwich. They may be looking for the person who dropped them off there, but they would happily jump into any car. They are also hoping a generous diner will buy them a sandwich. The unfortunate and dangerous situation these cats are in is not unusual. Too many cats and dogs find themselves abandoned at businesses or homes or on busy roads, left to fend for themselves and find food and shelter in a place where they may be regarded and treated as a nuisance. What can be done to help the pets, as well as the business and home owners? Every parish or county needs a well-funded and well-run animal shelter, preferably one that focuses on pet care and adoptions. Please do your part to help pets and people by voting to support animal shelters. Donate funds and your time to a local animal shelter or rescue group. Abandoned pets like these cats need your help.
