2025 A CRITICAL YEAR FOR KELLY
LSU fans have to be concerned as the 2025 football preseason comes into focus even though head football coach Brian Kelly finally thought enough of the transfer portal to make LSU’s product a legitamate Top Ten football team candidate this year.
Having secured most of the better transfers during the post-holiday windows, many analysts consider the Tigers’ portal recruitment the best in the country. Virtually all positions have been addressed with playoff caliber players. Some are rock solid; others are being viewed with a whispered prayer as LSU begins its long road back to being DBU. I guess its a tradeoff for recruiting two Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks and a third among the favorites for that award in 2025. However, LSU fans are not content to watch LSU have to outscore teams with 40 or more points to have a winner. Defensive line play and a weak secondary have plagued LSU since 2020 and an underperforming offensive line in 2024 gives way to a less than reassuring group of five linemen seeking a starting role. When your only returning starter was considered the weak link (at center) and with no Will Campbell or Emery Jones quality on the squad at offensive tackle, it’s my biggest area of concern.
So, too, is the deep commitment to LSU that Kelly doesn’t seem to possess. An outlier in the South, Kelly has tried too hard to fit in and it doesn’t work. His pledge of a million dollars to the transfer portal/shared revenue pot at LSU has opened some wallets and checkbooks but what’s a million dollars to a man trying to maintain his nine million dollar a year job? Kelly just lacks the passion of an Ed Orgeron or the organizational skills of a Nick Saban, so don’t expect LSU to return Kelly his most coveted prize - a national championship. Now that conference football play doesn’t mean a damn thing, it’s going to take a lot more marketing to keep LSU fans coming to our 100-year old stadium. For too long LSU has kicked the can of offering ticket holders a cutting edge facility, including better seating, classier vendors, efficient people movers within the concourses and really decent food and drink. The school seems to think that fans will pay three to five times more for the same product that they offered ten years ago and in return continue 1980’s era amenities, including outdated restrooms and nonexistent dining venues. Think again, boys. And with the probability of charging a “value added” premium for the right to watch a game in person coming to LSU as it has at Tennessee and Arkansas, the average fan is starting to back off. And perhaps as quickly as Donald Trump moved forward during his first weeks as President.
The athletic golden goose is in danger of becoming a cooked goose if colleges continue their arm twisting tactics and more and more Brian Kelly type coaches continue to fill the role of Chief Buttkisser and maitre’ d for 16 to 18-year old talented athletes. And the Nick Sabans of the world will not be anywhere in sight. In a world of people wanting everything material to come via Amazon, don’t expect people to embrace an overpriced, spoiled product they have to enjoy away from their residences. The pulsating music of Gen X will be replaced by better sounds as Gen Zers start to accumulate the money needed to take them out to the ball game, if they come at all. Many want a different culture and the now over-the-top world of sports, especially college and pro football, will have to change if they want to survive. It will be similar to the worlds of crypto currency - bitcoins and such. Get ready, folks. I wouldn’t want to have to maintain a sports complex financially in the future. And good luck to Brian Kelly whose Quixote-like quest for the golden ring may never be fulfilled.

LIFE AFTER WINTER STORM ENZO
Living in a temperate climate, areas between the tropics and polar regions of the globe with distinct seasonal changes, can be wonderful and awful all in the same year. The Gulf South is not known for extreme cold and snowy weather, but every once and a while we get a chance to participate. Winter storm Enzo provided us with a once in a lifetime snow event followed by an Artic blast of extremely cold air. We all had fun playing in the snow, but our tender plants didn’t have the same perspective.
The storm moved through the area on January 21, 2025, dropping anywhere between 4 and 10 inches of snow. Low temperatures dipped into the low teens for the following two days. Tropical and semi-tropical plants like bird of paradise, bottlebrush, bougainvillea, citrus, copper plant, Chinese hibiscus, dipladenia, ginger, heliconia, mandevilla, and tibouchina (princess flower) put on an amazing show all throughout our long growing season. However, they didn’t evolve in the temperate climate like the Southeast United States. They originated in areas that never received freezing temperatures. Therefore, these and other tropical plants don’t have ways to defend themselves when the water within the plant cells freezes and expands. Many of these plants that were left unprotected are severely affected and most likely perished.
The immediate effect of cold damage on a tropical plant resembles wilting. That is because when cells freeze solid, the volume of the cell expands and, in most cases, causes the cell wall to split. This allows cytoplasm to leak and reduces the structural integrity of the entire system. The wilt caused by cold weather will never return to normal because the cells have been irreparably damaged. The wilted tissue will eventually start to break down and rot. This effect can be seen directly after temperatures rise above 32°F following the cold weather event.
Once cold weather moves through the area most of us get stir crazy and want to get out and start doing things. There are a few things that you can do after a freeze event to stay active with managing your plants and helping them through cold periods. Once daily temperatures rise above 32F, you can remove the coverings. Leaving frost protection on plants for too long impedes photosynthesis by blocking sunlight and concentrating oxygen in the canopy. It also can get very warm inside when the sun comes out. You can also move your container plants back to their respective locations after fear of cold has passed.
A lot of folks want to get out and start pruning frost affected plant parts. Give tropical plants a couple of weeks before pruning out symptomatic tissue. The reason being is that these plants are tropical and will start growing as soon as the temperatures warm back up. Pruning stimulates growth and pruning too much too early might set up a failure if another round of freezing temperatures is expected. It’s also wise to wait so that you can observe the extent of the damage. This is especially the case with our commercial citrus producers. They prune freeze-affected citrus trees in early summer to help offset the labor costs of sending a crew out the second time because more cold damage appeared as the plants started growing later in the growing season.
If aesthetics is the goal, lightly prune out the obvious dead sections, but leave some of the damaged stem tissue. Don’t get too carried away. You can perform a more vigorous pruning application on tropical plants such as hibiscus, tibouchina, ixora, and angel trumpet later when you start to see new growth in the spring. At that time, you should prune each branch down to green, living tissue. Check with your local Extension Office if you have any specific questions regarding plant care after a hard freeze.

Hi, Everyone! email me!
Okay, how many loved the snow after the first day? Be honest now, how much did you love it when you couldn’t go to the store, the kids were getting on your nerves from running in and out the house making a mess with the snow, you were cold and couldn’t get warm, the dog was giving you an attitude because he didn’t want to go out. Yea, after the first day I was done with it and it was just me and the cat at the house. It was beautiful when it was coming down, a sight to behold and after all fluffy and glistening like it was sprinkled with diamonds shining brightly. But, take one step outside and cold ripped right through you. I couldn’t deal with that on a regular basis. But, I did enjoy it for a little while.

So on to other things. Happy February! Who is ready for Valentine’s Day? Handing a heart shaped candy box filled with candy to someone you care about or maybe a handmade craft and watching their face light up! The craft stores and even Dollar Tree are loaded with Valentine’s things. I had a surface already picked out for this time’s project. This is Mr. Love, a sweet little Gingerman all decked out for Valentine’s Day. He is 8 1/2 inches tall and looks so cute gracing my granddaughter’s Dorm room door at Mississippi College. While I was shut in by the snow I painted this little guy for her and when the roads opened up, my daughter, grandson, and I went to Mississippi to visit her, since we hadn’t seen her in a month. I just love this surface, it is so versatile! Be on the lookout for sporting his St. Patrick’s Day outfit and possibly his Easter Bunny ears! You just never know Who or what this shape will end up being.
So....What will your next project be? Mine...I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun! Sincerely, Paula Johnson

I was talking with one of my health providers last week about the changes in Washington D.C. She laughed and said her late 30-something brother was worried about his government job. He was one of the thousands of federal workers who were memoed to either work at his office or get another job.
I asked her if he was in the Swamp and she said no - one of the river parishes. So I asked her what his duties entailed. She said he was a safety official but had five layers of workers below his pay grade, none, apparently doing their jobs. She said one of the plants in her brother’s territory hadn’t been inspected in four years.
Her brother worked from home, on call, and hadn’t had much to do, apparently. But his problem, like so many others, was keeping his mouth shut and going along with the program of mediocracy to keep his phony baloney job alive. This alleged adult thought since he was hired after Covid eliminated most office government jobs that he could just go along for the ride from his home.
Donald Trump is cutting off the inflated allowances (paychecks) to spoiled, lazy, uninspired people who have little or no pride in what they do. Put them on the street and let them compete with the other of his ilk who left common sense in their cribs. Even though his memo had not dismissed him and he could continue working (for the time being) if he put in a normal 40-work week in an office or similar environment, this dude is at least smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall (or his 70-inch big screen) and knows he doesn’t possess the skill sets born of experience to be able to compete in Trump’s World.
And compete he will. Or maybe leave the U.S. and really find out how good he had it and how intolerant the rest of the world is. God help him but I won’t. Why should I?
I began working when American companies truly exploited workers. It was a Caucasian man’s world and women, for the most part, were not part of the equality equation. I remember listening to an old timer back in the ’60’s who remembers the violence of companies against their workers when unions were formed in the ‘20’s. Even in the ‘60s, fringe benefits were manipulated so that only the most valued workers could stay on the job long enough to cobble some sort of health insurance or vacation time. These men, for the most part, were blue collar workers who enjoyed what they did and would have been even happier if they had not been forced to choose between the unions and their employers. Without these workers, America wouldn’t have developed a middle class that triggered our society to learn to invest in their future. But it was always an uphill fight.
Washington, like most capital cities, is run on a spoils system. When someone like Donald Trump comes along, they usually fail because of the temptations of corruption or a lack of resolve. Say what you will about 45 and 47, the guy knows how to do the job efficiently and quickly while our country had only two presidents who truly offered some inspiration - John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. And he doesn’t need the money or notoriety. All media loves him, albeit for differing reasons.
He’s back. And it’s well past time for federal workers to get back as well.

PLANTING TREES
This is the ideal time of year to set out dormant trees and shrubs. Planting this time of year will give the plants a chance to get acclimated before our long hot summer gets here.
Be sure to select a good well-drained location to plant your tree or shrub. You should dig the hole at least twice as wide as the root ball or container. Before taking the plant out of the pot you can sit it in the hole to make sure you haven’t dug the hole too deep. Next gently bump on the sides of the pot to loosen and remove pot trying to avoid pulling of the stem of the plant.
Sometimes the roots will be matted together and grow in the form of the pot. Gently loosen the roots and check again to make sure the top of the root ball will be slightly above the soil level. I like to do this because we know the plant will settle and we don’t want it to be below the natural soil level. I have seen many plants die from being planted too deep. Try to keep the plant straight in the hole then backfill the hole surrounding the tree and tamp the soil so that tree will be stable and there won’t be any air pockets surrounding the tree.
You can also add a couple of inches of mulch around the plant to help with weed con-trol and to retain moisture during those hot dry summer months. Be sure and pull the mulch away from the trunk of the plant, water plant in and water weekly or more if it gets hot and dry.
On smaller plants it is a good idea to put some flagging or some kind of marker so the plant will be more visible. Your plant probably won’t survive a lawnmower or car attack. Also be careful not to hit the plants while using weed eater.

POLLINATOR GARDEN
Pollinating is essential when it comes to having a suc-cessful garden. Among the many pollinators found in Missis-sippi, honeybees are one of the most well-known. Growing a garden that is honeybee friendly is a fantastic way to help en-sure your garden is well pollinated.
Honeybees are mostly attracted to flowers that are blue, violet, and white; they rarely forage on red flowers. A variety of plants can provide bees with a source of nectar and pollen throughout the year.
Along with nectar, honeybees need a water source. Water is not only essential for hydration, but it is also important for dissolv-ing crystallized honey. Drip hoses and fountains are a great source of water for bees.
Bees also need a place to nest near the garden. Bee houses can be purchased or made from items such as wood and bamboo. These houses should face south or southeast directions, have a roof or covering, and be places at least three foot off the ground.
Growing a pollinator garden is not only a fun hob-by, but it is also a wonderful way to attract honeybees to help pollinate your fruit and vegetable gardens.

PLANTING IRISH POTATOES
Most garden Irish potatoes are grown in the spring, since good seed potatoes are impossible to find for fall planting. This is one of the few vegetables recommended for growing in mildly acidic soil. A soil pH below 6.0 is acceptable because it retards development of potato scab disease.
Prepare garden rows by building a high bed. You can use small whole potatoes or cut pieces of large potatoes (referred to as seeds). Use certified seed potatoes that are not shriveled or black on the inside when cut. Do not use potatoes left over from last year’s garden because they may be diseased and result in low yields. Do not use potatoes from the grocery store, since the variety may be unadaptable, and the potatoes may have been treated to prevent sprouting.
Cut seed potatoes into pieces weighing 1.5 to 2 ounces with at least one eye per piece. Small seed pieces produce weak plants; large pieces are a waste of seeds. Cut seed potatoes several days before planting and hold them at room temperature spread in a single layer to allow the cut surfaces to dry and heal. This reduces seed piece rot following planting. You need 1 pound of seed potatoes to plant about 10 feet of row; 10 pounds should plant 100 feet of row. Space seed pieces 10 to 12 inches apart and cover with 3 to 4 inches of soil.

ST. CLAIRE
Ask for three favors: one business, two impossible. Say nine Hail Mary’s for nine days with a lighted candle. Pray, whether you believe or not. Publish on the ninth day. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised, read, glorified and loved today and everyday throughout the world forever and ever. Amen. Your request will be granted no matter how impossible it may seem.
-Thanks M.T.O.
Spring-planted potatoes normally bloom, and some of the flowers develop into fruit that look like small green tomatoes. These fruits, the green areas on the skin of potatoes that have been exposed to light, and sprouted potato eyes contain a poisonous substance that may cause illness if eaten. Prevent greening of potatoes by keeping them covered with soil as they grow, and keeping them in the dark after harvest.
Some gardeners prefer to grow potatoes in straw mulch. Potatoes grown in such a manner are clean and easy to harvest. Cover seed pieces with 1 inch of soil. When green sprouts appear, place 4 to 5 inches of straw around the plants. Keep the layer of straw deep and moist. When potato plants die, harvest potatoes by carefully removing the straw.
SUPER BOWL FOR PET BOWLS: FILLING EVERY BOWL THIS SUPER BOWL SEASON
Have you ever looked into the eyes of a hungry pet? It’s heartbreaking—an empty bowl and a wagging tail, full of hope for a meal that isn’t there. That’s why we’re launching our Super Bowl for Pet Bowls campaign just in time for Super Bowl LIX.
This heartfelt initiative aims to tackle pet hunger across the greater New Orleans region. Every donation in honor of this campaign helps us ensure that no pet in our community goes to bed hungry, whether it’s a shelter animal in our care or a beloved family pet struggling through tough times.
Why It Matters
At the Louisiana SPCA, our mission is to protect the well-being of every companion animal in our care, but that mission goes far beyond our shelter walls. We know that many families in our community are struggling to provide for their furry loved ones.
Distressed by the rising cost of pet care, hundreds of pets across Southeast Louisiana are at risk of hunger. Nearly 20 million pets in the United States live in poverty, and 43% of pet owners are burdened with a devastating choice between feeding themselves or their pets according to a Harris Poll survey conducted on behalf of the Humane Society of the United States.
Our team believes no one should ever have to choose between feeding themselves instead of their pet due to financial hardships. That’s why we’re stepping up—not just for the animals in our shelter, but to support local pet food banks and struggling families throughout the Greater New Orleans community. Last year alone, we provided over 120,000 pounds of pet food to nearly 10,000 animals, keeping bellies full and families together.
How You Can Help
This Super Bowl season, you can join us in making a real difference for hungry pets in need, and here’s how:

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
Although the new year is well underway, it’s not too late to resolve to do something beneficial for yourself, your community and your pets. Now, more than ever before, spaying and neutering our pets is something we must all do. Milder winters are causing cats to breed year round, leading to more litters being turned in to shelters that are already at or over maximum capacity. Unwanted litters of puppies are abandoned, sometimes on roadsides, resulting in many of these innocent babies being killed before they can be rescued. Don’t just resolve to spay and neuter your pets, contact your local animal shelter today. Find out about spay/neuter vouchers and low cost programs that often include vaccinations. Make an appointment for your pet. You will be helping yourself, your community and your beloved pet.
Kittens rescued at two weeks when their mother was killed. A foster home had to be found in which someone was able to bottle fed them.
