Tony’s Take

HAVE DEEPEST TEAM, FASTER ARMS THAN IN RECENT SEASONS

The LSU Tigers are preparing for a long SEC season by not gathering up the premier players at every position but by harvesting the deepest position player roster and a pitching staff that rates their arms at least 75% in the 90 miles per hour classification or faster.

For the first time in several seasons, including their national championship year in 2023, LSU offers three solid weekend starters that have either gained experience or recovered from debilitating injuries over the past two years. A lack of a first team All American position player (with the exception of first baseman Jared Jones) but with a roster whose top 15 could play for any team in the country is a huge plus as the Tigers rolled over Purdue/Ft. Wayne by a 30 to 2 three game sweep with 30 hits, 45 strikeouts and only issuing two bases on balls during their first home weekend. They’ll play Southern this month as well, another Baton Rouge team that spanked the Tigers 12-7 in April of last year during last year’s lackluster season.

The key to LSU’s season is wrapped up in Jones, shortstop Monster Milam and starters Kade Anderson, Anthony Eyanson and Chase Shores, especially Shores, who missed most of the past two seasons after Tommy John surgery. Jones should lead the power parade, probably the only Tiger with a legitimate chance of hitting 30-plus homers and driving in at least 90 runs. The diminutive Milam is the glue to the infield, with better range and an arm than last year’s starter there, Michael Braswell. Braswell will man the hot corner and paired with Milam will give the Tigers one of the top three or four left sides of any college infield.

The Tigers are blessed with speed in left, center and 3rd base and all positions are manned by a quality transfer starter, a Top Ten high school player from 2024 and from LSU’s 2024 squad. More power could come from starting catcher Luis Hernandez, backup freshman catcher Cade Arrambide, second baseman Daniel Dickinson, right fielder Jake Brown and Braswell. Versatility is assured with top reserve Tanner Reaves, primarily a four position infielder but who can play all outfield positions as well. Sophomore outfielder Ashton Larson has the ability to lead this squad in batting average.

The bullpen could even be the strength of this talented team. Led by lefty Conner Ware, freshman righty William Schmidt and Gavin Guidry, the staff features three quality lefties, led by Ware and an incoming two-way transfer, Dalton Beck, who also plays the outfield and hits for good power. The hurlers also feature two of the top 12 pitching prospects out of high school last year, Schmidt and lefty Cooper Williams.

A few question marks remain. How solid is the bullpen once the gauntlet of SEC play begins. How much of a falloff at catcher will there be after four solid years of deep defensive backstops and good to very good hitting. Will the LSU freshmen come through early enough to secure a psychological advantage in the incredibly talented SEC, with four of the five top teams and six of the top ten. Can Coach Jay Johnson manage fundraising for NIL and still produce the quality team LSU baseball fans expect of the country’s finest program since the mid-80’s. Listen in for the early answers.

GAURA (OENOTHERA LINDHEIMERI) FIRST LOUISIANA SUPER PLANT OF 2025

The Louisiana Super Plant program is an educational and marketing campaign that highlights tough and beautiful plants that perform well in Louisiana landscapes. The LSU AgCenter has released the 2025 Louisiana Super Plants finalists for the 2025 growing season. The first plant to be highlighted for this year will be Oenothera lindheimeri, or what most gardeners just refer to as gaura.

O. lindheimeri goes by a few other names such as apple blossom grass, bee blossom, pink gaura, white gaura, and Lindheimeri’s gaura. Taxonomists originally placed this plant in the genus Gaura, but it was officially moved to Oenothera in the early 2000s. The species name honors a German botanist named Ferdinand Lindheimer who migrated to the U.S. in 1834 eventually ending up in Texas by 1844. As a botanist, Mr. Lindheimer studied native flora and fauna of Texas, Louisiana, and Mexico. His life work and love for plants led him to be called the father of Texas botany.

Gaura is considered a herbaceous perennial, a plant whose growth dies back each year, but the root system survives. They differ from woody plants in the fact that they don’t produce wood or bark. Grasses and ferns are other examples of herbaceous perennials.

Gaura grows to a height of 3-5 ft tall and 1-2 ft wide. Even though they get some size to them, I find that gaura always looks better when mass-planted. The loose, airy growth habit shows up much better when planted in groups. However, they do make interesting focal points when used alone in containers. They also make great components for mixed container designs because that same loose, airy growth habit provides good contrast with fuller, more dense plants.

Gaura is native to prairies and pinelands of Texas and Louisiana. It grows best in well-drained, acidic soil and needs full sun so that it can put on a beautiful show of flowers from April to June. And speaking of flowers, the flowers of gaura are quite superb. The name Gaura is derived from the Greek word gauros which means superb. The flowers occur on long wiry stems (racemes) and consist of four petals, four sepals, and noticeably long stamens. Flower buds start out pinkish in color and then open to white which eventually fades into a pink link. Newer cultivars of gaura can have white or pink colored flowers.

Due to our location within its native range, gaura plants don’t have many pest issues. However, one should be careful when using insecticides on and around gaura plants because of their role as a pollinator plant. Native bees, butterflies, and other common pollinators will visit the nectar-rich flowers during the day.

As you add new plants to your garden this season, give gaura a try. ‘Whirling Butterflies’ is a wellknown white flowered variety, ‘Siskiyou Pink’ is noted for its pink flowers, and ‘Crimson Butterflies’ produces crimson red colored flowers. The Belleza® series offers more compact growing plants and comes in three colors including Belleza® Compact Light Pink, Belleza® White, and Belleza® Dark Pink. Check out your local garden center to see what gaura plants your local nursery has to offer.

Hi, Everyone!

Were you surprised with flowers and candy for Valentine’s Day? Or was it your favorite, boiled crawfish? Being born and raised in Louisiana, and having owned a flower shop, I would opt for the boiled crawfish. But, as luck would have it, I was busy at Physical Therapy and then I had errands to run. But, I did get some crawfish today!

I sat around most of the morning digging through wood and patterns and just didn’t see anything I wanted to paint. But, I did find a 6 inch tall hat guy surface and thought....hmmmm, I can do a Leprechaun. St. Patrick’s Day really isn’t that far away. So I got the scratch paper and started sketching. Yea, it took me awhile, I did a lot of erasing and redrawing and finally ended up with this. A cute little quickie piece to grace the refrigerator. I may decide to add a shamrock to his right hand and maybe one on the left side of his pants as a pocket. What do you think? I actually used three different colors for his beard to give it depth and highlight. I can hardly wait until the 8 inch tall hat surfaces come in so I can make a bigger one. Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be? Mine....I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun!

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Tony’s Take SMIRKS IN;

JERKS OUT

Most Americans love a movie where the good guys finally get a win over those bad guys who ostensively had them by their cookies for years. That was the United States up to last summer, when a heretofore over the top, childish former President had an epiphany on a field in Pennsylvania.

Despite a criminally culpable FBI and Secret Service team, Donald Trump’s life was determined by an ordinary turn of his head, preventing a bullet from an assassin’s rifle from inflicting a mortal wound. The moments that followed the shooting and close counsel between Trump and his wife, in my opinion, shook the dirt off the roots of a man who had taken juvenile political name-calling to new heights. From that moment on, the good Donald Trump emerged from the base version of a man whose junior high school nasty nicknaming served as a roadblock to what the man would evolve into during the next four months.

I don’t believe the country would have collapsed on January 20th if Trump hadn’t won in November of last year. But the smug, churlish, superior, insider attitudes of the majority of the country’s Democrat leaders had the average American shutting his or her mouth as programs such as DEI, Black Lives Matter and overall Wokeness ran roughshod over political and corporate America and our armed services. And it didn’t appear things would get any better as a corrupt and unqualified national media corps hid the Democrats’ agenda fallout and supported a feeble, malleable shell of what was once Joe Biden as he stumbled towards disaster during a summer debate and political death at the hands of Jill Biden, Nancy Pelosi and other Democrat power brokers.

A missed rifle shot and the laughable Presidential candidacy of an ignorant and downright stupid former California Attorney General made Donald Trump’s now necessary win a downright cinch. Pillow talk does not a Presidential candidate make and the inability to put a complete English sentence together at least as well as a fourth grader even removed the support of what remained of a once conscientious group of Americans holding a Democrat’s voting card. Black people especially were finally offended after suffering an endless Amos and Andy routine from people like Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer for the past 50 years and Latinos who had endured a difficult but rewarding road to legal citizenship were doubly insulted by the open Southern border supported by the Democrats and the ignorance of our leadership towards the Latino drug cartels who were poisoning our citizens.

A person once told me “watch the people who appear smart. They are really dumb.” They live in a world of indulgence and corruption, lacking street smarts, covering their ignorance with hubris and the faux superiority of elitism. But these people, generationally rich from their misdeeds, are as sensitive as the Princess and the Pea, showing little resolve and even less common sense as they revert to verbal insults far worse than Donald Trump ever uttered. America is a country that opened its hearts and its doors to those with marginal life styles and thought processes that would endanger lesser nations and made the mistake of overreaching its inclusion and created a guilt culture that would be the envy of any Jewish mother. Now it is time to pay the piper and no matter how long you study American history, no President has ever done in his first few weeks what Trump has done. Hilter wrote Mein Kamph during his years in prison one hundred years ago and this is the only comparison to the German dictator and Donald Trump that truly holds water.

Trump’s kamphs (struggles) make Hilter’s look like serving a short community service sentence. The full Trump has emerged, relatively transparent, hardly shady, having made Promises to Keep. What movie goers cheer when the Good Guys win is what you hear from Maine to Mexico and if the smile is a little smirkier, it’s the smile of a person who bore the injustices of a Woke society oligarchy. In the words of Toby Keith, “and we’ll all get together for a victory tune. We’ll raise up our glasses against evil forces……” I wonder if horses smirk.

Well, we have a new man leading the Black and Gold! A few weeks ago, I predicted that the Saints would get Joe Brady however, he was the one who stayed as I never thought we had a real shot at Kellen Moore! Now, I liked Brady but Moore is well…MORE of a complete package.

A native of Prosser, Wash., Coach Moore finished his collegiate career at Boise State with a record of 50-3, the most wins by a quarterback in NCAA history. He concluded his collegiate tenure with the secondmost touchdown passes (142) and sixth-most passing yards (14,667) by any quarterback in NCAA history, owning a career completion percentage mark of 69.7. Moore was a first-team All-American from the Football Writers Association of America in 2010, twice being named Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year (2009-10) and earning Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the continued on page 5, Just Sports

continued from Just Sports, pg 4 continued from Just Sports, pg 5 Year honors in 2011. The Broncos’ offense finished in the top-five in scoring in each of Moore’s final three seasons, including a first-place finish in 2009 and a rank of second in 2010.

Moore played six NFL seasons for the Detroit Lions (2012-14) and Cowboys (2014-17) after entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State. He appeared in three games, including two starts for the Cowboys in 2015. He threw for 435 yards and three touchdowns in his first home start vs. Washington, becoming the fifth quarterback in Dallas record books to eclipse 400 passing yards in a single game and recorded the sixth-most passing yards by any Cowboy in a single game at the time. The following season, Moore broke his leg in training camp, but remained a mainstay in Dallas’ quarterback room, working closely with then-rookie Prescott as the Cowboys tied a franchise-record with 13 wins in the regular season, including an 11-game win streak.

Moore entered the coaching ranks in 2018, taking over as Dallas’ quarterbacks coach after spending the previous three seasons in the room as a player. In his first season coaching Prescott, he was named to the second Pro Bowl of his career, helping lead the Cowboys to the franchise’s second NFC East Division title in three seasons.

During his first season as offensive coordinator in 2019, Moore’s unit led the league with 431.5 total net yards per game, which was the tenth-best single-season performance in NFL history. Prescott finished second in the league with a career-high 4,902 yards passing, the second-most in team history and a then-career-best 30 passing touchdowns. Elliott finished the season ranked second in the league with 1,777 total yards from scrimmage, as Cooper recorded eight touchdown catches and a career-high 1,189 yards on 79 receptions.

Moore helped Prescott lead all NFL quarterbacks in passing yards (1,856) and 400-yard passing games (three) through the first five weeks of the 2020 season, before the signal-caller suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week Five. Overall, he prepared three different additional quarterbacks to take snaps under center for the Cowboys in 2020, the first time that Dallas had at least four different quarterbacks start at least one game in a season since 2015. Moore’s offensive front saw a shuffling of eight different starting lineup combinations on the offensive line due to injuries. Despite the adversity, the Cowboys finished the season ranked eighth in the NFL in passing offense, as wide receiver Amari Cooper hauled in a career-high 92 receptions for 1,114 yards and five touchdowns, while Lamb set the franchise rookie record with 74 receptions. Leading the rushing attack, Elliott finished top-10 in the NFL with 979 yards and six touchdowns.

The Cowboys offense was the NFL’s best in 2021, leading the league in total offense (407.0 net yards per game) and scoring (31.2 points per game). Moore’s guidance helped Prescott return from injury and throw for a franchise-record 37 touchdowns on a career-high 410 completions, registering a passer rating of 104.2, third-best by any passer in the NFL and the fourth-highest in a single season in franchise history at the time. On the ground, Elliott recorded his fifth 1,000-yard campaign and added ten touchdowns. Through the air, Lamb led the Cowboys with 79 receptions for 1,102 yards and six scores, while tight end Dalton Schultz experienced a breakout season with 78 receptions for 808 yards and eight touchdowns to join Jason Witten as the only Cowboys tight ends with 70 receptions and 800 receiving yards in a single season. For their efforts, three offensive players were selected to the Pro Bowl in tackle Tyron Smith, guard Zack Martin and receiver Lamb.

In four seasons as offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys (2019-22), Moore’s unit ranked second in the NFL in total offense (391.0 net yards per game) and scoring (27.7 points per game). The Dallas offense was also the NFL’s fourth-best passing offense (264.4 net yards per game) and ranked seventh in rushing offense (126.6 yards per game) over that span. Moore helped the Cowboys secure a pair of NFC East titles and three playoff appearances in his five seasons as an assistant coach. He coached eight players to a combined 12 Pro Bowl selections as offensive coordinator, and tutored quarterback Dak Prescott to another as his position coach in 2018.

In 2023, Moore served as the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator. He helped lead wide receiver Keenan Allen to the Pro Bowl after finishing sixth in the NFL with 108 receptions for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns. He also guided Justin Herbert to the sixth-best touchdown-interception ratio (2.9) and ninth-most passing touchdowns (20) in the NFL through Week 14 before sustaining a season-ending injury.

In 2024, Moore was a key piece of a coaching staff that led the Eagles to a 14-3 record, which tied a franchise mark for regular season victories, an NFC East Division title and the conference’s No. 2 playoff seed and culminated with a Super Bowl LIX championship at the Caesars Superdome. Ranked eighth overall in net yards per game (367.2) and seventh in points per game (27.2), Philadelphia rushed for a single-season club record 3,048 yards (sixth-best in NFL history) and finished second in the league in rushing yards per game (179.3). The 2024 Eagles were only the second team in NFL history to rush for 3,000-plus yards and at least 25 (29) touchdowns. The Eagles passing attack also flourished under Moore’s tutelage, setting a club record with a 103.4 passer rating, led by quarterback Jalen Hurts’ careerhigh 103.7, ranked fifth-best in the league.

Moore has a lot to prove as he begins his Saints tenure -- and several challenges lie ahead. He has to prepare for free agency, which begins on March 12, and will need to get a staff in place, meet players and make crucial roster evaluations in that time frame. One of those decisions will likely involve quarterback Derek Carr. Moore said he thought Carr was a “tremendous starting quarterback” when asked whether the team had to make a decision about the position.

While the New Orleans Saints don’t have a firm deadline for when the coaching staff will be filled out, the reality is they’ll be handling plenty of interviews in the coming weeks to make their hires.

The Saints have had a few coaching moves already, keeping one of their own and hiring two new staff members all on the offensive side of the ball.

Wide Receivers: Keith Williams (retained)

Tight Ends: Chase Haslett

Haslett began his NFL coaching career as an offensive quality control coach with the Dallas Cowboys continued in next column, Just Sports

in 2020. He remained in that role through the 2022 season. Over those three seasons, the Cowboys offensive coordinator was new Saints coach Kellen Moore.

Chase is the son of former New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Haslett. A former NFL linebacker and longtime defensive assistant, Jim Haslett headed up the Saints from 2000 to 2005 and led the franchise to it’s first playoff victory.

Offensive Line: Brendan Nugent

This is actually a return to the Saints for the 41-year-old Nugent. He was on Sean Payton’s New Orleans staff from 2015 to 2021. From 2015 to 2019, Nugent was the team’s assistant offensive line coach. The title of Run Game Coordinator was added in 2020, with Nugent taking on the role of Offensive Line Coach in 2021.

CHECK YOUR IRRIGATION AND USE IT WISELY

Homeowners are always on the go these days but there is one thing you shouldn’t have to worry about while you’re away at work or on a weekend getaway….your irri-gation system. An irrigation system can become problemat-ic if it’s not working properly, or if used incorrectly.

When your beginning yearly preparation for your lawn care needs it’s a good practice to check your irrigation system to make sure everything is working properly. Start at the timer and work from there. Make sure the timer is set properly, not only for allotted running times but also that the date, day, hours and minutes are correct. This is proba-bly the most important since watering should be done during the early-mid morning hours to ensure the lawn is dry during the late evening hours as well as prevents evaporation during the hottest part of the day. It’s also better to irrigate for longer periods a couple of days each week than to run shorter periods each day.

It’s important to note that both lawn and beds only need about an 1 to 1½ inches of irrigation or rainfall each week, regardless of temperature or drought. A measuring container, such as a tuna can, set out in the middle of the lawn can help determine how much water has been received after a run cycle; adjust timer as needed. When rainfall occurs a rain gauge purchased from your local garden center or hardware store will tell you how much rainfall has occurred within a week which will help you determine if you need to run your irri-gation. However, that doesn’t mean we have to water every week when we’re receiving periodic rainfall.

Next, run each zone individually to check for leaks and be sure all heads are rotating or pop-up sprin-kler heads are coming up and spraying correctly. If not, clean them and try again. At some point homeowners may have added new plantings resulting in some sprinkler heads not being able to spray over the top of the new plantings. Adding risers to raise the sprinkler heads will take care of this problem. In addition, using the correct spray pattern nozzle for the area to be watered can save on irrigation costs. Check the irrigation system periodically during the growing season to ensure no new leaks have occurred.

Although it’s good to have an irrigation sys-tem that operates the way it’s intended, with the ex-ception of an occasional drought such as in late 2023, we usually get enough rainfall to sustain our lawns and perennials throughout the year. It may be more beneficial to turn it off until it’s really needed since over-watering can cause severe plant problems, both above and below ground. Hand-watering those seasonal, herbaceous annuals would prevent the need to leave on your irrigation system. In other words, use your irrigation wisely!

PROTECTING PARADE HORSES: WHY LICENSING MATTERS

Parade season in New Orleans is an exciting time filled with music, floats, and tradition. Among the most iconic sights of Mardi Gras are the horses that march through the streets. However, ensuring their health and safety is as important as the celebration itself. That’s why we are continuing our mission to protect parade horses through careful inspections and licensing with the City of New Orleans.

The Louisiana SPCA was originally founded in 1888 to advocate for the mules and horses pulling carriages throughout the city. Over a century later, our work remains vital to protecting these beautiful creatures, especially leading up to Mardi Gras. Every horse participating in any parade must undergo a health inspection before they are allowed to march. Also, riders and owners are required to submit essential documents in advance, including veterinary records, vaccination history, and a list of possible riders. This ensures that only healthy horses are participating in the festivity. These regulations apply to all participating horses, even from larger groups such as Budweiser and the Marine Corps.

On parade day, Humane Law Enforcement Officers will be stationed at the lineup to perform visual and physical examinations. If a horse is not listed in the submitted paperwork, it will not be allowed to walk in the parade. In addition, all parade horses must wear a hip tag, which can only be obtained through our organization through our contract with the city of New Orleans. The city ordinance mandates that horses have up-to-date health certifications and vaccinations to qualify for this tag. These measures are essential for preventing the spread of disease and promoting humane treatment.

If you witness animal cruelty during a parade, report it to the nearest NOPD officer, document the incident, and call 911 to alert New Orleans Humane Law & Rescue officers. Never confront the rider directly. By enforcing these regulations, the Louisiana SPCA is ensuring that Mardi Gras remains a celebration for everyone. Parade Horse License and Hip Tags can be applied for through our website at louisianaspca.org/ parade-horse-license.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

START volunteers had the pleasure of adopting out seven cats and kittens to loving homes this past weekend. Here are a few of the lucky kitties who are now being treated like feline royalty in their new homes.

Haiden no longer has to fend for herself on the street.

Our volunteers are so grateful to everyone who has opened their hearts and homes to include rescued pets. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue organization if you are considering adding a pet to your family. A rescued pet is waiting there for you.
