Words to GREAUX by NEW YEAR, NEW PLANT: THE ROSELLE HIBISCUS

Edible landscaping has been a trend for quite a while now. Small residential lots aren’t much bigger than the houses built within them. Plant material is used to blend in hardscapes back into somewhat of a natural harmony with the surrounding vegetation. With space being a limited resource in the current paradigm, choosing plants that beautify the landscape while also serving other purposes such as supplemental nutrition, flavoring agents, and in some cases, financial support become very popular. Add this together Will Afton with a post COVID economy where people are looking for both food and financial security to deal with the rising costs of inflation, edible landscaping can help ease some of the stresses each of us feel.

Like previously stated, edible landscaping is not a new concept to home gardeners. Think all the way back to the homesteaders who ventured out into the American west during the early days of this country. They only had what they can produce around the house. In some cases, barter and trade could bring in additional items, but even that was limited to what a few neighboring homesteads were producing. As the nation progressed towards the present, that limitation has diminished. We now have a vast selection of plant material to grow at home. Nowadays, new gardeners are practicing and demanding the edible landscaping philosophy. The only difference now is the diversity in plant material available for them to grow.

One of the latest crops of interest for edible landscaping is roselle. Other common names of roselle include Florida cranberry, Indian sorrel, red sorrel, and Jamaican tea. Some folks refer to it as maple-leaf hibiscus or October hibiscus because it is a species of hibiscus. Hibiscus sabdariffa to be exact. Most of us are familiar with tropical hibiscus (H. sinensis), rose of Sharon. (H. syriacus), and confederate rose (H. mutabulis). All three are different species of hibiscus and are common garden plants in South Louisiana. All hibiscus, okra, and cotton are members of the Malvaceae plant family.

Upon examination of the flower you can easily see that roselle flowers, hibiscus flowers, okra flowers, and cotton flowers have the same basic morphology. Roselle either originated in either North Africa or the India-Malaysia region. Whichever the case, the plant is a perennial in tropical and semi-tropical in either of those regions. That means to grow this plant in a temperate climate like Louisiana, you’ll need to maximize the growing season by planting roselle soon after fear of frost in spring. Roselle didn’t evolve in a climate with cold weather, so frosts and freezes will cause damage.

Look for the sunniest area in the yard to plant a roselle plant. They prefer all day sun but can still produce flowers and fruit in part sunny locations. A variety of soil types with support roselle plants.

Good drainage is a plus, but these plants can handle occasional flooding and wet soils. They also can survive in a wide range of soil pH values (5-8). Like their okra relatives, roselle will get to be similar in size. Provide ample space when planting in the ground. Space plants at a minimum of 12 inches apart but aim for 2-3 ft between plants for maximum productivity. For containers, we’ve found that 15-gallon nursery pot provides enough space for an adequate root system. A container with a diameter between 14-16 inches would be adequate. Although roselle plants are mostly rainfed in areas where they are grown, access to irrigation will help ensure success. Supplement water for in the ground plantings when the weather starts to run dry after 1-2 weeks. Containers are design to drain very well. A drench of water enough to leak out of the bottom will suffice every time the soil runs dry.

Most people grow roselle to harvest the beautiful red pods or calyces to make tea, jellies, and preserves. However, young immature leaves can be harvested and eaten as a leafy vegetable. To harvest roselle calyces, wait for that beautiful hibiscus flower to finish. Once the flower starts to wither you have a 7-10 day window to harvest the calyx and seed pod apparatus. Separate the calyces from the seed pods. Use a food dehydrator or air dry them in the shade to store and save up. You’ll want to harvest on a schedule so that the plant continually adds more blooms. It very similar to how one would harvest an okra plant. The more you pick, the more the plant with produce. As the calendar moves into late September and October, leave some flowers and pods on the plant so that the seed has a chance to mature and dry out. This will ensure a source of plant material for next year in case of severely cold weather.

Roselle is an easy to grow plant that is related to a lot of plants that most of us in South Louisiana already have experience growing. The flowers are just as beautiful as tropical hibiscus and rose of Sharon. The deep red pods even give an interesting effect when grown in the garden and landscape.

However, with the roselle we can harvest those pods and young leaves to add variety to home cuisine while at the same time providing a little personal security for the self-sustaining homeowner. Start the process of locating a couple of seeds in late winter so you can give this wonderful plant a shot this warm season.

Hope you all are having an enjoyable Christmas Eve. Here I sit watching “Home Alone” (love those movies!). Waiting on time to pass so I can head to church for 10 p.m. mass.

Remember when it used to be Midnight Mass? Guess it’s anytime but midnight anymore. But, it is what it is. Got most of the cooking done, just need to put the turkey and ham in the oven in the morning. As I have gotten older, I enjoy the quiet times, don’t like crowds, and don’t like going out in the rain and cold. But I will on Christmas Eve. So if I don’t have to go to work, I sit and paint. And that is what I have been doing. I took vacation days.

This design is by Chris Haughey. This was so much fun to paint I actually painted three (3) of these. And will end up giving them away as Christmas gifts. Should have kept one for me. Oh well, I can order another blank. This particular design needed to be put together as the hat, eyes section, mustache, bell, and beard are all separate pieces. I almost forgot, so is the HO HO HO. After painting those pieces I had to glue them to the round board which I painted black and stenciled snowflakes for the background. After the glue dried I varnished it with 3 coats of varnish. I can hardly wait to see what the reaction will be from the recipients. I sure hope they like them.

Actually, it’s really a column about food. One of life’s greatest treasures until you start having issues with appetite and removal. Several hours of open heart surgery left me with some less than enjoyable byproducts, one of which is the struggle for me to enjoy food so much the way I used to when I named my food and drink magazine ENJOY! seven years ago.

But the food I want to talk about is press box food. Oh, yeah. The fare served to the sportswriters, broadcasters, influencers, producers and decision makers in the myriad college and professional sports stadiums (stadia). I’ve had the experience of dining? in many such facilities and believe me, based on the cooking and choice of dishes, the host teams are not that concerned about what comes out of their kitchen facilities. At Texas a few years ago, Longhorn officials reportedly didn’t even have water for the working media. I missed that experience because my best friend couldn’t secure a handicapped pass to watch the game in person.

One of the lesser food stadiums is our own Superdome, where the food is somewhat less than super although the gumbo does get some positive reviews. Out of 32 teams, New Orleans ranked 22nd in the most recent review from 2020. You would think that the NFL’s best food town would rank somewhere in the top five but NO. Maybe now that the owners of Raisin’ Cane are worth nearly as much as Gayle Benson, a deal could be struck for those tasty morsels. But don’t hold your breath for Creme Brûlée’ anytime soon. Or a carving station as 11 of the NFL franchises offer. Or the only one that offers Bananas Foster, the highest ranked NFL franchise for press box food quality. Tampa Bay. Yes, the Pirate Ship Home in downtown Tampa, whose original uniform colors looked like Creamsicles, produces the best field surface and the best food. Hopefully, the food quality continues throughout the luxury boxes and concession areas.

I’m getting a chance for this culinary challenge next week. LSU is playing Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa (used to be the Outback). That’s one day after the Saints play the Bucs in the same stadium and a week or so after the Gasparilla (SarsaparIlla?) Bowl played December 22nd. LSU gets a chance at revenge for their loss at Lambeau Field in 2016 against the Badgers. But I digress. And I hope to digest. The Bananas Foster and the stuff they serve at the carving stations and omelette bars.

For the game won’t be that exciting without Jayden Daniels appearance but it will be a chance to see the nation’s best threesome of receivers and next year’s legacy starter at quarterback. Against Coach Luke Fickell’s Wisconsin guys. Food and LSU’s Future all on New Year’s Day in a midday game. Gotta love it! I hope the food loves me back. CAN YOU SAVE YOUR VEGETABLE SEEDS? Whether we’re preparing Spring or Fall vegetable gardens or getting ready for harvest, many of us start thinking about saving seeds for the next crop. It can be very rewarding to harvest and save seeds of vegetable plants. But sometimes when we plant the seeds we saved, the results do not seem to be very like the plant we collected the seed from. Hopefully, the following will answer that question and help us decide whether or not to save seeds.

First, determine the seed source. When a seed is formed by a plant, it is the result of pollen fertilizing an egg. Whether the resulting seed produces plants identical to the plant that it was harvested from, Red Princettia hybrid poinsettia depends on whether it is cross-pollinated, self-pollinated, or a hybrid. These three options determine whether the two sets of genes (one from the pollen and one from the egg) are likely to be identical or very different. Cross-pollinating plants require pollen from a different plant to fertilize the egg via wind, insects, etc. Some cross-pollinated species have the female and male parts in separate flowers, such as corn, carrots, or squash, or even separate plants, such as asparagus.

Others have both parts in the same flower, but the egg will accept pollen only from another flower or plant. Examples are apples and pears. Both need another variety to help set fruit. The two sets of genes in the offspring of plants tend to have a lot of variation, so that the outcome of crossing is less predictable. However, if you have grown only one variety and your neighbors have grown the same variety or are far enough away to avoid cross pollination, you can still expect fairly consistent results from that seed.

In self-pollinating plants, the eggs are fertilized with pollen from the same plant. Each offspring will have two identical sets of genes, exact copies of their parents, and very similar to each other. Since seed from self-pollinated plants will produce plants very much like the plant it was produced on, these kinds of plants are ideal for seed saving. Most peas, beans, and eggplant are self-pollinating.

Heirloom plants are open pollinating and considered a seed-savers ideal plant. Heirlooms can be selfpollinated or cross-pollinated with the same variety but should be protected from cross-pollinating with other varieties in order to be “true to type”. Some horticulturists define heirloom plants by the number of years the cultivar has been grown, many of these handed down for generations. Many authorities classify any cultivar developed before 1951 as an heirloom, this being the time before plant breeders introduced the first hybrid vegetable cultivars. continued on pp. 8, County Gardners

LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock has accepted a move to the same position at Notre Dame, according to a report from InsideNDSports. Denbrock was a finalist for the Broyles Award this season as the nation’s top assistant coach after leading LSU to the nation’s top offense by yards gained and points scored per game.

LSU’s offense took a big step in his second year as the offensive coordinator, being the only team to rank in the top 10 nationally in both passing and rushing yards. Notre Dame is familiar territory for Denbrock, who is a native of the region and coached there from 2002-2004 and again from 2010-2016, with the latter tenure coming under now-LSU head coach Brian Kelly.

The move reunites Denbrock with Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman, who coached with him at Cincinnati from 2017-2020. Denbrock had verbally agreed to a three-year extension to remain with LSU on Dec. 6, but the deal was never finalized.

It’s unclear what route Kelly will go to replace Denbrock. The program announced that quarterback coach Joe Sloan and wide receivers coach Cortez Hankton would serve as co-offensive coordinators for the Tigers’ upcoming bowl game while we await a final decision on who will take the reins permanently.

There are options within the program such as Sloan and Hankton, but the team may also make an outside hire. The new hire will inherit an offense with plenty of talent, including potential starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and one of the nation’s best offensive lines that figures to return most of last year’s starters.

Some names that could be easily attainable and the LSU offense would not miss a beat with include: Joe Sloan has made a name for himself the last couple of years after developing QB Jayden Daniels into a Heisman-winning quarterback. Title wise, he took a step down when he originally took the job at LSU, leaving a coordinating position to be a position coach. But with his work so far, few could argue against

It’s that coordinating experience that could lead to Sloan’s promotion. In his first year calling plays at Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs went from the 97th ranked scoring offense to the 35th. Faulkner was a member of the UGA staff from 2020-22, giving him prior connections with Cortez Hankton. Faulkner has plenty of experience in the south too, including some time at Southern Miss.

Ryan Grubb, is another hot name in the coaching world and like Monken, this would be a big swing. But if this is the level LSU hopes to compete at, the Tigers need to chase coaches like this. Along with head coach Kalen DeBoer, Grubb has built one of the best offenses in the sport the last two years.

Grubb could continue the explosiveness LSU got used to seeing in 2023. Washington’s offense took plenty of shots, and that would likely be a good fit for Garrett Nussmeier, LSU’s presumed starter in 2024.

PINE BEETLES The number of calls fielded recently regarding dead or dying pine trees has been numerous, and there are a few culprits to possibly blame for this. Luckily the window of infestations has come and gone, so most of the damage that will be done, has been done. Which culprit caused the damage specifically isn’t as important as someone may think. The culprits can include southern pine beetle, ips beetle, or black turpentine beetle.

Drought is a fairly common stress in the late summer and early fall, but this year was particularly dry. Whenever you have something that stresses a tree, whether it’s extreme heat and drought combined like we experienced this summer, or new construction, the tree will be more susceptible to insects and diseases. Most of the damage seems to primarily be the work of the Ips beetles, also known as the engraver beetles.

Engraver beetles hit small clusters of trees and don’t produce as many generations annually as the southern pine beetle. Ips beetles typically move later in the summer and produce less generations per year than the more destructive southern pine beetles. Determining if the infestation is by an engraver beetle or the southern pine beetle is relatively easy. The galleries created underneath the bark by the southern pine beetle leave loopy S-curved chambers, while engraver beetles leave straighter, X- or Y-shaped chambers.

A third type of pine bark beetle, the black turpentine beetle, is the rarest of the pine bark beetles in Mississippi and is mostly found in the lower third of the state. Regardless of the type of beetle, each one is lethal to pines.

Insecticides are not very effective, nor economical, as getting good coverage and the frequency of spraying a large, mature tree can be extremely tough to do. There is one somewhat viable option for high-value trees however, Verbenone. This synthetic pheromone product mimics the beetles message to other beetles that the tree is full and there is not enough food supply, and other beetles should look elsewhere. This may be a viable option for some homeowners in the future as a preventative course of action when stress becomes evident.

You can spot infested trees when their crowns go from dark green to yellow-green to red, and eventually to brown. Once the crown begins to change color, it’s too late to save it.

Removal is necessary, especially if the now dead tree is a safety concern around structures, playgrounds, or areas where human activity can be detrimentally affected.

Hybrids result from crossing two different self-pollinating, ‘pure line’ plants. All of the first-generation plants from this cross will contain the exact same two sets of genes (one from each plant) and will be identical to each other. This first generation is what you buy in a seed packet marked “Hybrid” or “F1”. To simplify, let’s describe how an F-1 hybrid comes to be by using the following example.

A plant breeder observes a particularly good growth habit in a plant, but with poor flower color, and in another plant of the same type he sees good flower color but poor growth habit. Now the breeder wants to combine the best traits (habit and flower color) of each plant into one plant. The best plant of each type is then taken and self-pollinated (in isolation) each year and, each year the seed is re-sown.

Eventually, every time the seed is sown the same identical plants will appear. When they do, this is known as a ‘pure line.’ Thus, two ‘pure line’ plants are crossed to produce F1 hybrid seed. Many of the good characteristics we enjoy in vegetables have been acquired through this type of plant breeding. However, the next generation (seeds produced by the hybrid seed vegetables or F2 hybrid) will contain a random mixture of genes from the two original parent plants resulting in plants that may have a whole range of desirable and undesirable characteristics. Because of these potential undesirable traits, you should not save seed from F1 hybrid plants if you want to be certain that the plants grown from that seed will be the same as their parents.

The advantages of planting F1 hybrid seeds are numerous. Varieties have been developed for color, production, size, disease resistance, etc., many traits that heirlooms lack. But the biggest disadvantage of hybrids is that seeds from these plants can produce undesirable results. If you want to be certain that the plants will be the same as their parents, self-pollinating plants or heirlooms are a good choice.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS AND YOUR DOG With the new year comes New Years Resolutions, which for most people will include becoming more active. This new year, consider including your dog into your active lifestyle change! Whether you pledge to walk for 30 minutes every morning and night, run two miles every other day, or bike to your local coffee shop every morning, your dog would love to join you.

There are a variety of ways to include your dog in your resolutions this new year, all while being safe.

Your top priority while exercising with your dog should be their safety and your own. Keeping your dog safe can mean making sure that they are securely leashed and, in your control, that they receive adequate breaks and hydration, and that they are microchipped with your up-to-date contact information.

It is important to pay attention to your dog as you engage in new activities to make sure that they are receiving the proper exercise according to their age, breed, and health.

The average dog needs about 30-45 minutes of exercise every day, but for those active breeds like Border Collies and Belgian Malinois, they may need up to an hour or more a day. Make sure that you understand the breed of dog you have and their health limitations before embarking on your fitness journey. If you are an avid runner, but own a Bulldog, you may opt to do a walking cool down with your dog after you’ve already ran your desired length without them. Watch for signs of exhaustion by paying attention to how much your dog is panting and drooling, which can be signs you need to slow down or stop. Having a doggie water bottle on hand can help cool your dog down. There is no shame in having to take a break, enjoying the scenery, and taking a moment to check in with your dog.

There is a leash law in effect, which means that your dog must be securely attached to a leash controlled by their owner or guardian. Dogs must remain on a leash the entire time they are off of your property, no exceptions. If you are running or biking with your dog, make sure that your dog is as close as possible to you, without causing injury, so that they cannot wander into the street. The more lack you give the leash, the higher the possibility that your dog may drift into traffic while you are focusing on finishing that last mile. Keeping them close means keeping them safe.

All dogs must be microchipped, and it is especially important if your dog becomes loose at any point in your workout. Microchips provide reassurance that once your dog is found, the microchip company will alert you and then share whatever information you would like to provide to the finder. This will ensure you are reunited with your dog quicker. Your dog relies on you to keep them safe, so make a resolution this new year to make that happen!

Meet Sweet Pea, a kitten who showed up in someone’s hack yard.

She is not microchipped and no one is looking for her. The people who are caring for her chose her name because she is so sweet. She apparently was someone’s little pet until they no longer wanted her. START can get this kitten ready for adoption and find her a great home. We can do this because we have wonderful volunteers and donors whose contributions make this possible.
