Tony’s Take NIL HAS BECOME A MONSTER
The idea of college athletes making a few dollars off of their names, images and likenesses was long overdue. With colleges raking in as much as up to one hundred million dollars annually from television and other sources, it was the players who labored on for chump change. As schools began paying coaching staffs ten to 25 million dollars annually, it was the scholarship player who had to cobble together offseason dollars or risk accepting illegal booster funding to have enough income to support himself and perhaps a family during his upcoming eligibility years. Many times players left school early to secure a modest signing bonus from the NFL or another professional sports league and a more than livable salary in professional sports at the detriment of losing a chance to complete their education or develop into a better player by staying in school.
NIL was formulated at Wisconsin and after an uneven start about seven or eight years ago, it began to flourish. But the greedy and opportunistic forces in college sports began to see the cracks in the system and instead of controlling the operation of the NIL through an organization such as the NCAA, players began to formulate their own deals despite the best efforts of local co-ops to restrict the income to what it should have been in the beginning; a way for college athletes to train and study in their discipline as well as classroom achievement without having to drive a ten-year old car and eat Ramen noodles four times a week.
Then came the killer: the transfer portal. This meant any player at any school could enter a status to transfer to another school in the country without penalty of a lost season or league restrictions. It meant 18 to 22-year olds could change their minds for the flavor of the day (or school year) and change their team like changing their socks. But that’s not the real coup d’ gras. Agents and associations saw this as a chance to pay players to come to their schools not only as a transfer but also in the recruitment of high school seniors…or even juniors. Soon it was a reality that a pimple-faced 17-year old could sign with his soon to be alma mater for anywhere from a $25,000 car dealership deal to a seven-figure, multi-year contract.
This miscarriage of economic justice will be rectified somewhat with the NCAA restricting the size of co-op pools for every school next year. In other words, if you want a roster to stay, nearly every player has to have a piece of the action and so that loyal senior who labored one more season for Dear Old U now will do it for $100,000, $200,000 or more or could leave for green(er)back pastures. And they’re doing it. One team, Marshall, had to cancel its now nearly meaningless postseason bowl game because the roster was too depleted to compete. LSU nearly found itself in the same way a few years ago and got its butt handed to it by a normally much less competitive team in the postseason.

Now the kids have it better than a below-average NFL player. They can negotiate four-year deals, top-load the first year and walk away with the whole kaboodle after one year. Not even a star NFL player has that freedom although the average NFL paycheck is substantially larger than a college payout, Even LSU”s staid old Brian Kelly got into the act, pledging a one million dollar matching fund for supporters who anted up another million dollar total. Not that it will hurt coach Kelly much;, tax breaks and his five-figure annual income makes that million to the Kellys similar to a $19 monthly donation to a national charity. But now the rich crazy school boosters or their wives can dictate how much of their billions of dollars will be sent to old alma mater in order to secure a quarterback with a higher upside based on a high school career. Don’t believe it? Ask the prize high school quarterback who dissed LSU on signing day this month for a chance to please the wife of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison. For money, of course. Eight figures worth. And a local sports personality in Baton Rouge thinks its more about the kids than the coaches or the school’s fans, who pour their life’s emotions and their puny treasuries into the school? Hey. If the kid is upfront about it, let him game the system for every buck our greed and stupidity allows. But if the kid wants to game the school, that kid should have a career full of injuries and disappointment and be left on the stockpile of never-was losers. Sort of like quarterback T.J. Finley, the famous Round Mound of Quarterback whose “chest” was vilified by former LSU coach Les Miles six years ago.
This magnificent monument to mediocracy begins his sixth year of college ball at his fifth school, Tulane, next year. My, how the mighty have fallen in so many ways. -0-

FLOUR BEETLES
Pests can wreak havoc in the landscape, but they can cause problems in other areas of our home as well. In fact, pests are defined as living organisms that have a negative impact on humans. Most gardeners are familiar with common garden pests such as aphids and whiteflies because they feed on actively growing plants. However, pests can be an issue even after the plant is gone.
Flour beetles are common pests of stored grain products such as flour, cereals, meals, crackers, beans, spices, pasta, cake mix, dried pet food, chocolate, nuts, and seeds. All of which are commonly stocked in pantries no matter where you live in the country.
Flour beetle is a general term for two species of beetles that can be found in the United States. In the cooler regions the confused flour beetle, Tribollium confusum, is more prominent. The name is in reference to its similarity to the red flour beetle, T. castaneum. The red flour beetle is the common flour beetle seen in Louisiana.
Flour beetle adults are small, averaging about ¼ inch long. They are classified, along with all other beetles, into the insect order Coleoptera. Similar to butterflies, flour beetles display complete metamorphosis with four distinct phases: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval and adult stages feed and both can be found in an infested product. The adults are somewhat love-lived and can live for more than three years.
When someone finds flour beetles in their home, it is coming from an infested product that was brought inside. The egg and larval stages camouflage well. It is the adult beetles that are first observed. If beetles are seen, then work on
Dispose of infected products by placing them in a sealed bag and throwing them out with the trash. Practice good sanitation where stored grain is used and stored. These beetles can survive on spilled food sources. Maintain a clean cooking area with respect to floors, countertops, and hard-to-reach places like cracks, crevices, and underneath large stationary appliances like dishwashers and refrigerators.
Protect susceptible products by storing them in air-tight containers. Inspect new products when brought inside the home. The ultimate preventative measure would be to place newly acquired grain products in a sealed bag and put them in the freezer for five days below 32°F. This would kill any larvae or adults it the product and help to prevent further infestation.
There are no chemical management options for flour beetles at the consumer level. Commercial facilities have a few more management options but still heavily rely on sanitation and prevention to keep their products clean. Be observant, take action when needed, and you can feel assured that you are doing the best you can at keeping these pests out of your household. -0-

Hi, Everyone!
By Paula Johnson
me!
So ...how many of you were wrapped up in High School Football Championship Games? I was, Big Time! I did not physically get to attend any of the games but did watch them on the internet. My Favorite game was the Archbishop Shaw / E D White game! I am a diehard Shaw Eagles fan! My grandson was a 2017 graduate and my granddaughter was a Shaw Eaglette from 8th thru 12th grade. We bleed green. Ha! Ha! Ha! Needless to say when Shaw won the Division ll State Championship game we were all Thrilled!!! Best Christmas present EVER!!!
Okay with excitement calming down and things settling back into normalcy, let’s talk about Christmas! I found this wood blank at Dollar Tree and thought it was cute. I decided it would make a cute quick project. Well not as quick as I would have hoped. The wood is not the best, but I didn’t expect it to be that bad. It drank up the paint like crazy and took a long time to dry. I am NOT done with this yet! Let me tell you what I did. This piece is actually 3 D and I really do like it. I based the snow on the roof with 2 coats of warm white to begin with, then I painted it again with 2 coats of snow white. I am going to go over that with SnoTex and glitter to give it some pizazz. I will also do that to the snow on the window sills and on the ground in front of the house. I am going to glue on some tiny plastic lights under the snow on the roof and below where the second floor is separated from the first. I am going to paint a candle in each window and lastly I think I will paint some gum drops to make it look more like a gingerbread house. Lots of ideas for this, just didn’t have the time to complete it to show you. But, I will complete it and who knows, I may add a picture of the finished house in one of my other columns.
Well, that’s it for time. What will your next project be? Mine....Not really sure. But it’ll be fun! Wishing you all the Merriest Christmas and Happiest New Year Ever!!! I sincerely hope 2025 will be a better year mentally, physically, and financially for us all! Til next time.
Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, the NCAA might be having troubles with their playoff tournament, but the LHSAA had exciting State Championship games. However, there are entirely too many divisions, and we need to just go back to 5 un-split classifications, that is an argument for another day.
It was definitely a great weekend for South Louisiana with a total of 7 team championships. 3 champions coming from the Westbank of New Orleans and the 504 area code, 3 from the Lafayette area and the 337 with 2 from Baton Rouge and the 225. There was only 1 north of Acadiana or the Red Stick and that team is from the Monroe and 318 area code! With that said here is a recap of all 8 Louisiana State Champions!
On the 1st day in the dome we had a triple header. The opening act was the Division IV Select State Championship was for the birds as the Ouachita Christian Eagles went up against the Vermilion Catholic Screaming Eagles. VC beat OC , 33-21, in a thrilling rematch of their 2022 title clash. It was a one man show as VC Quarterback Jonathan Dartez, Louisiana’s all-time touchdown leader, came into the game with 173 career scores and wasted no time making an impact. Dartez finished the game with an astounding 47 carries for 253 rushing yards and four total touchdowns, cementing his legacy as one of the state’s greatest high school players.
Even with Dartez’s heroics, Ouachita Christian had one final chance after Vermilion Catholic missed a 24-yard field goal. With just 26 seconds remaining, Vidrine dropped back to pass, but Caleb Guidry intercepted it and returned it 87 yards for the game-sealing touchdown.
The 2nd game of the day, the Division IV Non-Select state championship game, had a local impact that was a bit more of a battle of natural disasters. With the South Plaquemines Hurricanes battling the Haynesville Golden Tornado. A total of 15 years after squaring off in New Orleans in a state championship game the Canes had a bit of revenge not only for them but it was also Haynesville who ended a back to back title contention for Buras back in the 90’s.
You could see the emotion all game long and it was not until the final moments that South Plaquemine Head Coach Lyle Fitte, who also played in that game 15 years before, was able to let out all the feelings as he knelt on the turf crying tears of joy. Jy’heim Williams caught a pair of touchdown passes, ran for a 2-point conversion and had a late game interception as South Plaquemines earned a 20-7 victory over Haynesville. The title is the third for South Plaquemines, with the previous two championships coming with Fitte as a player in 2007 and 2008.
The night cap was the Division III (Non-Select) State Championship Game saw the Sterlington Panthers take on the St. James Wildcats. The Panthers rushed for 341 yards and came up big on defense to defeat the Wildcats, 35-28.
Trading punches to a tied score of 28-28 entering the fourth quarter, sixth-seeded Sterlington went on a drive using a multiple attack. A 12-play, 67-yard drive that elapsed 5:03 off the clock. Five different Panthers had a carry on what turned out to be the game-deciding scoring drive and David Hickman finished it off with a six-yard touchdown run.
The top-seeded Wildcats were pretty much stymied the entire fourth quarter. St. James (10-3) had one more shot at it after they got a defensive stop, but Tomarion Burch picked off a Jackson pass with 25 seconds remaining to seal the Panthers’ third state championship in school history.
The 2nd day of games started again with a game for the birds. As the Division II Select championship game with the ED White Cardinals matching up against the Shaw Eagles. Thirty-seven years after Shaw won its first state title in football in the Caesars Superdome under Coach Hank Tierney, the Eagles returned to the scene of their greatest triumph and repeated the feat in stirring fashion by rallying from behind three times to record a hard-fought 28-25 victory against the Cardinals.
Shaw was making its fifth Prep Classic appearance under Tierney, whose first stint at the Marrero school lasted 19 years before he was released and then welcomed back with open arms three years ago. Shaw’s last Prep Classic appearance was 16 years ago during a run of three consecutive Class 4A state runnerup finishes in 2008, 2007, and 2006 achieved while Tierney was coaching at West Jefferson and later Ponchatoula.
The 2nd game was Lafayette vs Baton Rouge with Catholic of New Iberia taking on the Dunham Tigers. The Tigers were pretty quiet up until the 4th quarter when they scored twice over a five-minute span of the fourth quarter and thanks to a blocked punt, drove to the Panthers’ 3-yard line with 53 seconds to play and the Division III select state championship hanging in the balance.
Sophomore defensive back Karon Eugene clinched seventh-seeded Catholic High’s second state title in seven years, intercepting Dunham’s Elijah Haven in the end zone with 46 seconds left for a 31-28 victory. The 2nd night finale was all that we thought it should be in the Division II Non-Select State Championship. Cecilia made a 2nd straight appearance in the Championship under former Belle Chasse Defensive Coordinator Dennis Skains while the Franklinton Demons returned after a long hiatus this time under Mr. Rebuilding Coach in Nick Saltaformaggio.
The game was a back-and-forth battle filled with momentum swings and heroic performances. The second half saw Franklinton fight back. Sy Austin struck again in the fourth quarter, scoring a 14-yard run to put the Demons ahead 32-29 after a successful two-point conversion. But the Bulldogs’ defense and
, pg
resilience would prove decisive. The Bulldogs’ win not only brought a state title back to Cecilia for the first time since 1995 but also proved they’re one of the most determined and gritty teams in the state, overcoming over 500 miles of travel throughout the playoffs, including their journey to the Caesars Superdome.
With just under two minutes remaining, Cecilia’s Franky Frank forced a game-changing fumble, giving the Bulldogs one last shot. Solari delivered, finding Ellis Stewart for a dramatic, bobbling touchdown catch in the end zone to reclaim the lead at 35-32.
The 3rd and final day of the championships unfortunately was not able to have a big-time night performance as the NFL over-ruled the LHSAA and made all games having to end before 4 pm. So, Saturday had an early kick off for the Division I Select championship game.
Exploding from the starting blocks with a fury uncommon in most state finals, the Cougars left no doubt who was the superior force in a battle of unbeaten by bolting to a virtually insurmountable first-half lead and then basically coasting to a 53-8 demolition of Alexandria Senior High.
So dominant was the performance of the three-time reigning District 9-5A Catholic League champions that the final 10 minutes, 42 seconds were played as running time, per Louisiana High School Athletic Association rules that requires game officials to run the clock once one side gains a 42-point advantage. Top-seeded Karr’s victory against No. 2 ASH earned the Cougars their fifth state title in the last nine seasons under Coach Brice Brown, but first since winning four consecutive Class 4A crowns from 2016 through 2019. The Cougars actually made five consecutive state finals appearances, counting a Class 4A runner-up finish in 2020.
Karr (13-0) additionally captured its first state crown as a member of Class 5A, the state’s highest classification in addition to claiming the seventh overall state championship by the renowned Algiers program located on the West Bank of New Orleans.
The final game of the weekend was supposed to be one of the best however, it proved to be the 2nd blow out of the day that also had a running clock. Central won its first state championship in 58 years against one of the state’s foremost powers, playing with a running clock for nearly the last eight minutes. The fourth-seeded Wildcats were that dominant, defeating third-seeded Ruston 42-0 in a Division I nonselect contest that was essentially cemented by halftime. Central also achieved a few other milestones along the way of the first state title in the Prep Classic era.
The Wildcats’ margin of victory was the greatest in a Division I/Class 5A state championship game –surpassing Acadiana’s 36-point differential over Parkway (77-41) in 2013. They also became the second team in the history of Class 5A/Division I to shut out an opponent in the state final with West Monroe taking a 30-0 win over Rummel in 2009.
A great 3 day weekend proved that South Louisiana is still king in Louisiana football and that the Superdome is the greatest venue to host high school championships.

LEAFY GREENS GROWN IN RAISED BEDS
I recently visited Buds and Blooms Nursery in Wesson, Mississippi, where they were growing some gorgeous leafy greens in raised beds.
Raised beds are ideal for cool-season vegetables because they offer improved drainage, help prevent soil compaction and warm up faster in the cooler months. This creates an optimal en-vironment for root development and helps pre-vent waterlogging, which is crucial for healthy plant growth.
The Chinese cabbage growing at Buds and Blooms is a standout.
This plant prefers rich, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0-7.0. It thrives in cooler temperatures between 45 and 75 degrees. For best results, plant Chinese cabbage in a location that receives full sun to partial shade, and make sure it gets consistent moisture. Dry conditions can cause the plant to bolt.
Bolting is when a crop prematurely grows flower stalks and produces seeds. The result is inedible, bittertasting leaves or poor-quality produce.
Chinese cabbage can be direct-seeded or transplanted into the garden, and it matures in 70-85 days. The lush green leaves are not only beautiful but packed with nutrients. This makes them perfect for fresh salads, stir-fries or fermenting into kimchi.
The Chioggia Guardsmark beets grown in the raised beds at Buds and Blooms are another fantastic coolseason crop.
These heirloom beets prefer well-drained, loose soil rich in organic matter. They grow best in temperatures between 50 and 65 degrees.
Chioggia Guardsmark beet seeds can be sown directly into the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in early fall or spring. Space seeds about 1 inch apart, and thin the seedlings to 3-4 inches apart once they emerge to give the roots plenty of room to develop.
Chioggia Guardsmark beets produce striking roots with pink and white rings and edible, bright green leaves with burgundy-red veins. These leaves can be harvested throughout the growing season and used in salads or sautéed like Swiss chard. The roots are ready to harvest in 55-65 days.
At Buds and Blooms, I loved the Dinosaur kale they had growing in raised beds. This variety is one of the best for overwintering. This hardy green thrives in well-drained, loamy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
Dinosaur kale prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in warmer areas. It is incredibly cold-tolerant, even surviving temperatures down to 20 degrees when given some frost protection.
Sow seeds about one-fourth to one-half inch deep, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart for full-size plants. This variety can be grown year-round in milder climates, with leaves ready for harvest in about 60 days.
The dark blue-green, wrinkled leaves have a tender texture and a slightly sweet, earthy flavor, making them a popular choice for both fresh salads and cooking. Its tall, upright growth habit -- reaching 2-3 feet tall -- makes kale an attractive addition to edible landscapes and ornamental gardens alike.
When growing these cool-season vegetables in raised beds, I recommend watering regularly, especially during dry spells. Feed plants with a balanced, organic fertilizer to ensure they receive the nutrients needed for vigorous growth.
By incorporating cool-season leafy green vegetables into your garden, you can enjoy fresh, home-grown produce even during the winter months.
KEEPING YOUR PET PROTECTED DURING FRIGID WEATHER
As the cold season settles in, it’s crucial to remember this rule of thumb: If it’s too cold for you, it’s likely too cold for your pets. Regardless of their breed or the thickness of their coat, our pets need proper care to stay protected as frostier days approach quickly. So, prioritizing our pet’s safety by never leaving them outside unsheltered is essential, especially when temperatures fall below 30°F.
The safest way to protect your pet from colder temperatures is by bringing them indoors. It’s cuddling season, and the chilly weather makes it the perfect time to snuggle up to our pets. Finding an extra warm spot near a safe heat source with some extra fluffy blankets will do wonders to provide them warmth, and to keep us comfortable as we show them love.
If you cannot invite your pet indoors, setting them up with a cozy, wind-protected shelter can be an effective alternative. However, do not forget to monitor your pet’s condition while outside. Making sure to schedule regular check-ups to refresh their food and water or switch out their bedding ensures Jack
Also, be mindful that outdoor animals are affected by the cold as well. Cats often seek shelter underneath cars for warmth. Before starting your vehicle in the morning, check underneath or knock on the hood. Even the slight honking of your vehicle horn can help to avoid any unpleasant accidents.
If you encounter an animal in distress or suffering from any signs of hypothermia or frostbite, contact your local authorities immediately. These signs can display as shivering, burrowing, excessive panting, vomiting, or cracked/swollen skin in animals. In emergencies, Humane Law & Rescue officers can assist while non-urgent cases can be reported by calling 311.
