Words to GREAUX by PANSIES PROVIDE GARDENERS OPTIONS FOR COOL SEASON COLOR The pansy we know today, Viola tricolor var. hortensis, got its start back in England during the early 19th century. The daughter of the Earl of Tankerville, Lady Mary Elizabeth Bennet, collected wild specimens of V. tricolor and started a plant breeding project. The resulting crosses were eventually presented to the Royal Horticultural Society and received great praise.

Currently, pansies claim the title of most popular cool-season bedding plant and because of this they come in a variety of different colors including several bi-color combinations. You can find colors that match with almost any design scheme.

Pansies are relatively easy to grow and don’t require an excessive amount of care. They prefer areas with full to part sun. This equates to at least 5-6 hours of direct contact sunlight. Anything less will produce weak plants and few flowers. Pansies prefer an acidic soil condition within a range of 5.5-6 on the pH scale. Have your soil tested prior to planting to determine the current pH status. Lime (crushed limestone) can be added to raise soil pH or elemental sulfur can be added to lower soil pH. The soil test will also tell you what nutrients are deficient in the soil. This will be beneficial because pansies are considered heavy feeders and should be fertilized accordingly.

In order for any bedding to be successful, a proper amount of organic matter should be incorporated into the soil. Homemade compost is excellent but there are commercial options available at most garden centers. Work into the soil down to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Even with all the different varieties, all pansies will eventually grow 10-12 inches tall and wide. Place plants every 6 to 8 inches for maximum effect and remember to plant at the same depth as they were in their original containers. Finish them off will a layer of mulch, like the fine textured pine needle mulch, to really add icing on the cake.

All plants have their specific pests and pansies are no exception. Several leaf spots including anthracnose, alternaria, and cercospora are common fungal pests. In most cases, they will cause unsightly spots on the foliage. The spots can be brown, tan, or transparent. Anthracnose produces spots with a concentric ring pattern. These pathogens obviously cause a decrease in aesthetics and should be treated upon confirmation. If anthracnose is determined then it is advised to remove infected plants and replace. Using mulch to prevent plant-soil contact and reducing overhead irrigation can help protect plants from other fungal diseases. Fungicide sprays can also add another layer of protection.

As far as insect pests go, aphids are the most important pest. They can become problematic during periods of vegetative growth because they feed on young developing leaves and stems. Small infestations can be controlled by natural ladybeetle populations but larger infestations may require the use of an insecticide. Neem oil and insecticidal soaps are effective as long as labeled instructions are followed properly. Snails and slugs can also be problematic on pansies. Look to use a snail and slug bait to control these elusive night time feeders.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed when trying to decipher amongst all the different pansy varieties offered at the garden center. Upwards of more than 250 different varieties of pansies are available on the market. Most of these varieties are grouped into series where each series contains plants that very in color but share similarities in flower size, form, hardiness, heat tolerance, and so forth.

Heat tolerance can be a beneficial trait for gardeners in Southeast Louisiana because of the frequent warm periods received during winter months. The ‘Majestic Giant’ series is one of the more popular available. They display good heat/cold tolerance and produce large 3-4 inch flowers in various colors.

The ‘Crystal Bowl’ series boasts clear faced flowers that are smaller in size. For an interesting twist try the ‘Cool Wave’ pansies. They have a spreading growth habit. Use them in a winter inspired combination planter or hanging basket. The spreading growth habit provides a nice spillover effect.

Wow! time sure is flying by. In just two short weeks it will be Christmas. Are you done with all your shopping? Tree up and all the decorations up? I went to the mall last weekend and was quite surprised to see it was not as crowded as I remembered. O guess more people are doing their shopping online. I still like to go into the stores, there are bargains in stores I never seem to find on the internet. But then again, I am not that computer savvy.

Today, I am sharing a truck door hanger I painted for my daughter. She does a lot of things on her cricut and saw this design on one of the files (not sure what is really called) she purchased. I changed things up a bit to fit onto the wooden truck blank I had here. The hardest part of this was choosing the colors and enlarging it to fit on the wood properly. I spent more time on those things than actually painting. All in all I don’t think it turned out too bad.

Well, that’s it for time. I sincerely hope that you all have a very Blessed and Merry Christmas and the New Year brings you everything wonderful!!

HOLIDAY HOUSEPLANTS There is a wealth of plants to choose from to liven up your home during the holidays. Today I am going to highlight three that you should consider this Christmas season.

When you think of a Christmas time flower, the Poinsettia likely comes to mind. Originating from the southern region of Mexico, Poinsettias range from the traditional red to pink, white, peach, and even bicolor. With proper maintenance, you can enjoy your poinsettia several weeks into the new Red Princettia hybrid poinsettia year. To extend the color of the bracts (the brightly colored modified leaves), ensure the plant is stored in a place between 68 and 72 degrees during the day and 60 to 65 degrees at night. Make sure to keep the plant away from sources of temperature change such as vents, radiators, or space heaters. To minimize early bract drop, the soil should remain moist but not soggy. Keep the plant in a bright area of the home. For more information on how to care for your poinsettia, see Extension Publication 2573, Selecting and Maintaining Poinsettias.

Common as a Christmas tree shaped topiary, rosemary provides a fragrant option during the holiday season. The best place to keep your rosemary plant is a sunny location within the home. It needs full sun for at least six hours each day. Being a Mediterranean region native, rosemary prefers welldrained soil. Make sure to water rosemary thoroughly but not too often. After New Year’s, place the plant outside on the patio or porch but bring it back in if temperatures drop below 25 degrees. If you want to keep that Christmas tree shape, regular pruning is needed. Fortunately, pruned pieces can serve as an herb in your hearty winter meals.

The last plant I want to highlight is the Norfolk Island pine. Native to the South Pacific, they are often called living Christmas trees. Pot the plant in good quality, loose potting soil in a container large enough to allow growth. Norfolk Island pine prefers medium to high light conditions with daytime temperatures of 50 to 70 degrees and 45 to 65 degrees at night. Maintain high humidity to reduce needle drop-off from the trunk. Make sure to water regularly but don’t let the soil become soggy.

Apply a complete balanced fertilizer every third or fourth watering. Decorate with ornaments for the complete Christmas tree appearance.

DANIELS’ HEISMAN VICTORY TOOK “FLIGHT” WITH AI Saturday’s announcement of Jayden Daniels receiving the 2023 Heisman Trophy was not nearly the surprise it would have been mid-season. His victory over two other transfer quarterbacks was decisive, nearly as overwhelming as the win by Joe Burrow four years ago, but considering early and mid-season bias, Daniels may never have received an invitation to New York in October to be among the Heisman finalists.

Much has been said about Daniels’ incredible statistical advantages, where his quarterbacking skills would have secured the Heisman by themselves. But adding in his 1,134 yards rushing, which surpassed the season totals of both pre-season All American RUNNING BACKS and ranked 26th in the country and second in the SEC as well as first among all quarterbacks was the clincher.

Many quarterbacks grow during their collegiate careers, but Daniels had a clear advantage over any others. A company called Cognilize, founded four years ago in Giessen, Germany by a local youth soccer coach and his longtime friend, created a virtual reality for Daniels so complete and sophisticated that it became a “flight simulator” for Daniels to understand real game time through a virtual game time. The company had approached high school, collegiate and NFL teams during its first two years of existence with a fledgling product that incorporated artificial intelligence through a rapidly evolving virtual reality headset for quarterbacks to use and enhance their responses without increasing their on-field practice sessions. But it took former LSU offensive line coach Greg Studrawa (“Stud”) to see the value in the program and in turn contact Jack Marucci, LSU’s Director of Performance Innovations.

The rest developed rapidly between Cognilize’s Verena Krakau and his youth-coaching buddy, Christian Hartmann and LSU’s Marucci, now that a major player (LSU) was more than willing to use the product and even help build out the product with a full-blown partnership. Using Hartmann’s coaching curiousity and Krakau and Hartmann’s no sleep, nonstop developmental skills, the two men were able to continuously fine tune the headset programming to incorporate an incredibly accurate view of each of LSU’s opponents, stadiums and clock locations, color schemes and even opponent’s uniform variations. When Daniels walked out onto the field at Missouri, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Alabama, he had already mentally walked out onto the field and myriad decisions could be made accurately within one and one-half to 2 and one-half seconds from the beginning of the play. It took the positive attitude of Daniels to see the value of AI virtual reality and he embraced it wholeheartedly. When asked about the positive impact of using the product, Daniels told Marucci that it was a “seventy-five to 80 percent” improvement before using the product.

Using Cognilize’s technology, fine-tuned at LSU this year, should ensure LSU will have a freer flow of top tier prep and transfer quarterbacks in the future. It seems like the Dark Ages when Ed Orgeron’s offensive coordinator, Cam Cameron, couldn’t intelligently answer basic quarterbacking questions by high school prospects. Of course, Orgeron’s intelligence and that of many of his assistants and predecessors, could, in hindsight, be considered “artificial.”

Future artificial intelligence developmental programs are being considered for linebackers and other position player groups. Both partners in Cognilize have become so immersed in our football this year that Marucci joked with them that they could become “the reverse Ted Lasso”, the imaginary American football coach who found himself coaching a British soccer team. But it’s obvious that Studwara, Marucci. head coach Brian Kelly and LSU’s quarterbacks coach, Joe Sloan, have “Lassoed” the prime quarterback development tool in the college game before anyone else. And that is a huge advantage over the Alabamas and Georgias of the world. In the parlance of Garth Brooks “Calling’ Baton Rouge:”: “Operator, won’t you put me on through, I want to throw the ball down in Baton Rouge”.

This time of year, one of my favorite fruits to eat is satsuma. If you are lucky enough to have your own tree you have probably noticed that sometimes you will have several of the fruit on the tree that will be large and puffy. These satsumas seem to have thicker peeling and a puffy look. They also can be hard and won’t have much taste. Most of the time this occurs in younger trees that are about one to five years old. I have a tree that is about 20 years old, and it will have some puffy fruit every year. The cause of this can be late blooms that set during periods of warm weather. Also, after researching a bit, I found that ‘Owari,’ regardless of the type of rootstock that they are on, can be more prone to this problem.

In conclusion there is not much that can be done to prevent puffy fruit. The main thing you should do, as with any fruit tree, is make sure it is getting ideal fertilization, water when needed, check often for pests and hope for good growing conditions.
