Words to GREAUX by COPING WITH TREE LOSS BY PLANNING THEIR REPLACEMENT

Driving down the highway the other day, I was astonished to see several dead pine trees and more than a few stressed magnolia trees. Deciduous trees like cypress, oak, sweet gum, and sycamore will naturally drop their leaves this time of year and that is expected. However, seeing all the dying evergreens I am now starting to think about my yard and want to develop a plan to move forward. The severe drought conditions that wrecked Louisiana during the 2023 growing season were most likely the last straw of environmental stresses to affect our trees.

Perennial plants, plants that live for three or more years, go through specific stages during the growing season. Think of life events like leaf emergence, flowering, seed production, and dormancy.

Prior to the dormant period these plants send a lot of their energy sources downward to be stored and utilized in the spring for next year’s leaf emergence period. Energy molecules are stored in limbs, trunks, and roots. When the plant is stressed during the later stages of the growing season, this energy storing process is greatly disrupted. Evergreen trees like pines and magnolias that turn completely brown in the fall are signaling that they have given up. Deciduous trees and to be a little more resilient, but they don’t show the same symptoms as easily because they lose all their leaves in the fall. Many of us are experiencing this in our own yards and I think one way of handling the emotional stress is to up a plan to replace these dying trees with something new. Something that has a proven track record in our local ecosystem.

The Louisiana Super Plant program was designed to inform consumers about good plants for the Louisiana environment. The program highlights all types of plants used in the Louisiana landscape.

Several tree species are included on this list as well.

Willow Oak, Quercus phellos, is a fast-growing oak species with a linear-shaped leaf. A lot of folks mistakenly refer to them as pin oaks because of the leaf shape. It gives you all the positive attributes of a water oak, but much cleaner, more refined, and longer lived. Willow oaks make for excellent backyard shade trees, averaging about 60ft tall with an elegant upright form.

Sweetbay Magnoalia, Magnolia virginiana, is a beautiful native magnolia species that a lot of folks already know about. They average about 30ft tall and share a lot in common with Southern Magnolia like those beautiful fragrant, white flowers.

Bald Cypress, Taxodium distichum, is our official state tree and is a tried-and-true native species that every Louisianian should be familiar with. You can get consistent fall color with this plant every year. The only downside with using this species in the home landscape is the emergence of cypress knees. Because of this trait, I always recommend planting bald cypress in back of a lot or along the boundaries. Keep them away from lawn areas and flowerbeds so that the knees don’t invade and conquer!

You can’t go wrong with either of recommended trees in this article. However, make it a priority to select a good healthy specimen from the local garden center. Start looking now even though most will have the dormant look to them. Garden centers stock up on trees in the fall because horticulturist recommend planting them during the dormant season, November through February. Look to plant the tree as soon as possible using proper planting techniques and make sure to add a mulched area over the immediate root system.

Hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving with family and friends. The weather really wasn’t that bad either. We just had a mist, not really much else. Everyone ate too much and I am sure gained a few pounds.

I have been busy painting Christmas presents when my job wasn’t demanding my services. I really would like to show you my Santa with his light up nose. I think he will look so cute on the tree with Rudolph. I am now working on the snow people.

These are so much fun to paint. When I am done with those I have to finish the truck with Santa, reindeer, and an upside down elf. There was no pattern for that one, just a picture my daughter sent me.

I know I am not being very descriptive this evening but I am a bit under the weather. So I will end this now and promise to do a better job next time. Until then......

Ok, now that the biggest issue is out of the way and the football season is wrapping down let us give a review of how the football season has gone.

New Orleans Saints (NFL) – Even though the Saints will probably end the year winning the division and make the playoffs pretty much by default. This team has potential but no direction. Dennis Allen and Pete Carmichael are destroying this team from the inside out! No matter what the end of the year brings, this team needs changes and maybe wholesale changes is the only way that this team will be able to find some solid footing.

LSU Tigers (Baton Rouge) – This year has seen one of the most explosive offenses in NCAA history.

Unfortunately, the defense has been one of the worst if not the worst defense since the Curly Hallman days. Next year, the defensive players will be seasoned veterans and prime for some coaching changes.

This year should end with a 2nd Heisman Trophy winner for LSU in the past 5 years. This will not only be key for the program but for the entire athletic department. This would boost recruiting and keep the Tigers on top of a lot of national headlines.

With that said, Matt House and most of the defensive staff at LSU should not be retained. Pretty sure, the offense will regress as it would be astonishing if the pace was kept up next year from this season. So, year 3 will be the toughest and most influential year of the Brian Kelly area. While some say he will have to do the most coaching as he ever has next year and a good defense will be key!

SAPSUCKER DAMAGE AND CONTROL

I’ve encountered sapsucker damage many times over the years working in both the landscape industry and as an Extension agent and always suspect they’re the culprit when I hear “a line of insect holes on my tree” over the telephone. This is the work of the yellow-bellied sapsucker, a type of woodpecker, and chances are you, too, may have noticed a line of shallow holes neatly drilled into the tree in the front of your home. The yellow-bellied Yellow-bellied Sapsucker sapsucker is black and white with a red cap and throat patch in males, but not females.

The holes are known as sap wells, and the sapsucker makes the holes so it can eat the sap that drains from inside the tree. It also eats any insects that may have been trapped in the sap, although sapsuckers are mainly Sapsucker damage on a interested in the sap itself. Unlike other woodpeckers, sapsuckers do not young Live oak peck into a tree looking for insects. The sapsucker usually makes new holes in line with the old holes. Holes are approximately one-quarter of an inch in diameter. The sapsucker makes two types of holes. Round holes extend deep into the tree, and the bird uses its bill to probe for sap inside these holes. Shallow, rectangular holes must be maintained so they will continue releasing sap. The sapsucker licks sap from these holes and may also eat the cambium of the tree.

While trees may exhibit holes for several reasons, including other woodpeckers, bark beetles, and other insects, sapsucker damage is notable because the holes are pecked close together and in rows.

Other types of holes are not uniformly aligned. Insect holes will be fewer and smaller in diameter.

Further, insect holes are often identified by frass or the boring dust left by the insect as it drills through the tree.

Sapsuckers prefer trees with soft, thin bark, such as Bradford pears, maple and birch. The birds also prefer young, vigorous trees, although older trees are not immune. Trees with thick, furrowed bark are better defended against sapsuckers than smooth-barked trees but I’ve encountered many young Live oaks with sapsucker damage. The tree should recover from minor damage, but excessive numbers of holes can allow entry of insects and decay fungi that can damage the tree. Stress from intensive feeding can lead to cambium girdling, decline in tree health, and eventual death of the tree, although this is rare.

Please keep in mind that sapsuckers, like all woodpeckers, are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so lethal control requires a permit. There are other means of control, however.

A more common control method is to discourage the sapsucker from returning by wrapping burlap around the affected area but do not keep burlap on the tree indefinitely. Additional methods include encircling the tree with chicken wire, applying reflective tape to branches, and draping the tree with plastic netting found at the local hardware store. A decoy hawk or owl can be used to scare the woodpecker, but you should move it around the tree every few days so the woodpecker will think the decoy is alive.

Tulane Green Wave (New Orleans) – What a season it has been for the Wave! Willie Fritz has completely turned this program into a national name and this time without the laughter. Since 2018, Tulane has enjoyed three winning seasons and three bowl victories under head coach Willie Fritz. No season during that span was more successful than last year when the Green Wave went 12-2 overall, won the AAC Championship, and defeated USC in the Cotton Bowl. Tulane continues to be one of the best G5 teams after ending the regular season with an 11-1 record, even though star quarterback Michael Pratt missed some time due to injury. They are primed to win their 2nd consecutive AAC Title and just hired a new AD. This is where the feel-good story hits a snag! Fritz openly supported another candidate for this position and an in-house candidate at that. Can you name another university where if the Head Football coach supported a candidate for any position that it would fall on deaf ears? Not to mention, with so many quality teams looking for coaches, Fritz will be on top of most of the lists and likely will take a better job!

Until, Tulane puts football and athletics as a whole as a priority they will always be a stepping stone for coaches to leave!

Grambling Tigers (Grambling) – With a former NFL head coach at the helm, the Tigers have the notoriety to keep getting solid recruits. But a season where they were (5-6, 4-4 SWAC) this program needs to do a lot of soul searching in order to get back to the days of Eddie Robinson. An average head coach with a good staff could keep them going with average years but they need to recruit and coach better players.

Northwestern State Demons (Natchitoches) – This has been one of the most traumatic seasons in the history of Demons football! The FCS Demons, who compete in the Southland Conference, announced the canceling of the rest of its football season in the aftermath of the death of safety Ronnie Caldwell. Shortly after quitting their season, the university announced the resignation of coach Brad Laird. This currently makes it the 2nd official opening on this list. The question now is what will the university due to correct this damage and what does it mean for the football program?

McNeese State Cowboys (Lake Charles) – After suffering the worst season in a very proud Cowboy history, finishing without a victory on the field in their first 10-loss season. The school surprised everyone by deciding to hold on to 2nd year head coach Gary Goff. Making the decision to stay the course was probably due to a buyout that would’ve cost the school at least $600,000.

Goff, who has three years remaining on his original five-year contract — valued at more than $1 million, the richest contract in school history — has posted a 5-17 record since coming over from Division II Valdosta (Ga.) State after the 2021 season. It was the fourth consecutive losing season (12-28 from 20202023) for McNeese, tying a school record (17-23 from 1967-1970), all since Hurricane Laura struck in August 2020.

Southern Jaguars (Baton Rouge) – What a few months it has been on the Bluff! The Jags fired their head coach the 2nd opening on this list and then finished the year (6-5, 5-3) while taking a 26-24 lead in the Bayou Classic series. It was the fifth win in the last six meetings for the Jaguars over Grambling and might have sealed the head coaching position for interim Terrence Graves. The tradition has always been strong for Southern and a return to prominence is in the future.

SLU Lions (Hammond) - After having a few highly successful seasons under Louisiana native Frank Scelfo, the Lions returned to earth this year. Finishing, (3-8, 3-4 SLC) this year was not only a disappointment but had to be expected. This team had a ton of turnover from a year ago and need to hit the ground running in recruiting to keep up with our next team who has also had a share of their own success. continued on pp. 5, Just Sports

ULL Ragin’ Cajuns (Lafayette) – With a huge 6th and bowl eligible win over ULM, the Cajuns closed a chapter in their 52-year-old football history at Cajun Field. on Saturday afternoon when it plays Sun Belt Conference and in-state opponent ULM in the regular-season finale for both teams. This marked the 288th and final contest for ULL (6-6, 3-5 SBC) at Cajun Field in the facilities’ current configuration.

The venue, which has served as the home of Ragin’ Cajuns football since 1971, is set to undergo major renovations that will be completed in time for the 2025 season when it will be officially renamed as Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium.

ULM Warhawks (Monroe) – Speaking of the WarHawks, this is another Louisiana program with a highprofile coach that is hanging on by a thread. ULM (2-10, 0-8 Sun Belt) finished the year on a 10-game losing streak after winning their first two games over Army and Lamar. This is a job where head coach Terry Bowden is not in jeopardy of losing his job just yet but a winning season has to happen next year or Bowden will be sent back to retirement.

Nicholls State Colonels (Thibodaux) - After a 1st Round FCS Playoff loss, Nicholls wraps up the season with a 6-5 overall record. It marks the sixth time in nine years under head coach Tim Rebowe that the Colonels finished with a winning record. The Colonels returned to the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2019, heading on the road to take on No. 14/17 Southern Illinois University. The Colonels ran the table in the Southland to earn the league’s auto bid while SIU finished 4-4 in arguably the toughest conference in the FCS, earning an at-large bid to give the Missouri Valley Football Conference six teams.

This was the fourth playoff appearance in the last seven seasons. Nicholls made its first postseason under coach Tim Rebowe in 2017 as an at-large, falling in a 38-31 battle against South Dakota. The Red and Gray secured the league’s auto bid the following year and defeated San Diego, 49-30, but dropped a 4221 matchup at 3-seed and national runner-up Eastern Washington. Nicholls repeated as league champs in 2019 and started the postseason with a 24-6 win over North Dakota. The Colonels then made the trip to face 1-seed North Dakota State and were defeated, 37-13, by the eventual national champions.

Nicholls is 3-6 all-time in the playoffs with three appearances before Rebowe’s tenure -- 1986, 1996, 2005.

I fully believe that once Willie Fritz leaves Tulane for a better situation, Rebowe should get serious consideration for that Job! If this does happen, we could possibly see 4 new head coaches in the state just in college with another most certainly coming with the Saints!

DANIELS CLEAR CUT WINNER IN HEISMAN QB SHOWDOWN A review of the national quarterback statistical categories that make up the total weight of a college quarterback’s on-field value show such an overwhelming advantage by LSU senior Jayden Daniels that the names Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. should not even be mentioned in the same breath.

Following a less than pedestrian first 45 minutes against a strong defensive Texas A&M unit Saturday morning, Daniels rallied his team from a ten-point deficit to a 14-point win doing the things that Heisman moments are made of. In all, Daniels created four touchdowns, 235 yards passing with a 66.67% completion mark and 120 more yards on the ground. His three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter were all Heisman moments and the obviously star-struck, ass-kissing broadcast duo of Jason Benetti and Brock Huard tried to turn Oregon quarterback Bo Nix into Superman during the Oregon/Oregon State game last weekend by describing Nix’s possible “Heisman Moment” as an across-the-body, right to left 40 yard pass for a touchdown; a play any one of 15 to 20 current college quarterbacks could have and has made.

Let’s get the elephant out of the room right now. Both Penix Jr. and Nix are playing for more complete teams than LSU, whose defensive malfunctions have been widely touted in this corner and nation-wide. They’re not playing for a national championship but neither will either Nix’s team or Penix Jr.’s. guys make the top four-team CFP level. Hell, Penix couldn’t even watch his field goal kicker attempt a last-second kick to win the game for Penix’s Washington Huskies team against Washington State. The kick was good, keeping Washington undefeated but Penix showed up as less than the senior leader he should be, especially on national television. Heisman candidates don’t turn away from adversity. Buh, bye, Michael.

Nix’s best categories where he has a 10% advantage or more over Daniels are his completion percentage rate, 78.6% to 72.2%, interceptions, 2 to 4 and completions, 3l5 to 236. Daniels best categories with the same advantage over Nix are his total offense, 4,946 to 4,065 and passing efficiency, 208.01 to 189.83 as well as points responsible for, 302 to 262. Nix’s best category for efficiency was his incredibly low 2 interceptions while attempting 400 passes while Daniels had 4 interceptions while attempting 326 passes. But Daniels average yards per completion advantage over Nix, 16.5 to 12.4 yards and average depth, or distance of target from the quarterback, 10.3 for Daniels to 7.0 for Nix, was were even more telling. It shows that Nix was the less risk-taking player, willing to drop off short, safe passes to reduce interception possibilities and putting less faith in a group of receivers who never had a chance to even come close to those on LSU’s squad and Washington’s. With plays of 20 yards or greater by completion, Daniels completed 63.6% for 1,347 yards, 22 touchdowns and no interceptions on 90 plays. Nix’s numbers: 52.3%, 847 yards and 12 touchdowns with one interception on 48 plays. Daniels gave LSU’s receivers more opportunities to grow as pass catchers once he grew as a quarterback and it should show when an LSU Tiger (Malik Nabers) wins the Biletnikoff Award for Best College Receiver in 2023.

DOLLAR SPOT As we head into fall, we will begin to see fungal issues in many lawns due to the cooler temperatures and heavier dew patterns. One that has been popping up lately, due to the ideal temperature and extended period of leaf wetness, is dollar spot.

While most common in Bermuda and Zoysiagrass, this fungal problem can occur in most warm season turfs. Initial symptoms on leaves will be chlorotic spots that turn to straw-colored areas with a reddish margin. When looking at the lawn, these infected areas will look like small, circular spots that are a light straw color. The disease can sometimes cause an hour-glass shaped chlorotic spot in middle of the leaf and can cause the area to appear “sunken” due to the leaf folding over at this chlorotic point. With the drought we’ve been experiencing this summer through now, this can be somewhat tough to identify as a lot of our turf is now brown due to drought stress.

Managing dollar spot can be done by maintaining soil moisture and soil nutrition. Watering to maintain soil moisture should be done in a way that does not prolong wet periods, such as early morning or late afternoon.

Maintaining adequate soil nutrition is important, particularly nitrogen levels, so that the grass can outgrow the fungus. Taking a soil test and following instructions are important because overapplication of nutrients can lead to other issues. Making sure you avoid thatch buildup and removing clippings regularly will also help with this disease.

Fungicides can help manage this disease, but this can be difficult due to various resistances that the fungus may have. Make sure to rotate between fungicides to avoid these problems. Fungicides that have been shown to help include myclobutanil (Fertilome F-Stop Fungicide Granules or similar) and fluxapyroxad (Xzemplar or similar). Make sure you read and follow all instructions to avoid plant damage. Myclobutanil, for example, should not be applied when temperatures are over 85 degrees due to potential for suppressed growth and burning. Applications are most beneficial when applied every 14-28 days preventatively. Trying to eliminate an established problem will take higher application rates more often and may not work.

Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until STARTCARES@HOTMAIL.COM WWW.STARTFOSTERS.COM they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Peach is just one of the adorable kittens we have for adoption. She has lovely gray tabby markings on a background of white. Peach is very affectionate and cuddly.

Her sister, Lavender, is a beautiful, almost lavender colored tabby.

Lavender loves attention, but she is not as outgoing as her sister. Peach and Lavender are six months old.

Charley and Nicky are seven month old brothers. Charley is a brown tabby and Nicky is a light gray tabby. These kittens are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.
