The fuss and hoopla surrounding the hiring of Scott Woodward as LSU’s Athletics Director in 2019 seemed to bring the golden age of sports coaching to the school. The Baton Rouge native and LSU graduate had done well in marketing and sports advising for most of his 34 years prior to being hired to come home.
Come home he did, promptly surveying the school’s coaching tree before pulling the trigger on some very commendable hires. But they also involved one very visible dismissal as well, that of Ed Orgeron, who had a checkered history of being a bit more than just a crazy Cajun with a quick temper and mouth. That dismissal ended with Orgeron, boastfully addressing reporters when LSU offered him a 17 million dollar buyout after two disastrous seasons following the 2019 national football championship.
LSU is still paying off that Orgeron debt. But it pales in comparison to the buyout Texas A&M structured with Jimbo Fisher, the Bobby Bowden protege’ whose record never met that of his most stalwart coaching boss, Nick Saban. Fisher is sitting on a a nearly eight figure annual payday for seven years following his ouster two years ago. Fisher played the LSU boardroom boys for a huge payday in College Station, then saw his dismissal not long afterwards.
Now who do you think brokered that deal for the Aggies? Why, none other than Woodward, who also drank the Fisher Kool-Aid. A&M’s good ol’ boy network has much more cash to direct to Woodward’s dubious hire but LSU doesn’t.
Which brings us to the current Woodward hire. Brian Kelly is an affable enough Irishman from Massachusetts who may be the winningest active college football coach but has no national championships to his name. And although his wife, Pacqui, loves the Baton Rouge area (who wouldn’t after twelve winters in South Bend?), it wasn’t her love for Red Stick but Brian Kelly’s desire to win the elusive award secured by Saban, Les Miles and Orgeron at LSU in the past 21 years that brought him here. Except he won’t do it because there is something disingenuous about his style, a disconnect among his players, some of his coaches and a growing percentage of Tiger football fans. My colleagues all say the school can’t afford to pay Kelly off because of his deal which rivals Fisher’s. And who put both of those deals together? Why, Mr Woodward did.
Now Woodward faces the NIL nightmare that influenced Nick Saban to retire last year from Alabama. Fortunately for the Tigers, their number one 2025 recruit is rock-solid to come to Baton Rouge. Described as a generational high school quarterback prospect (sound familiar), Bryce Underwood from Michigan has given LSU the most tamperproof commitment to sign with them December 4th as the nation’s number one high school recruit and its number one quarterback. There are other gems in this signing class as well. But let’s hope Woodward doesn’t try to horn in on putting together NIL deals with unrealistic offers for these kids.
Kelly may have one more year left before graciously retiring once Underwood, et al come on board. But Kelly’s late season performances has greased the skids for him. And with that happening, a buyout will have to come well before another four or more years pass and allow both Kelly and the school to save face. But now the shadows of doubt also have been cast on Woodward, who can be allowed to play

CHRISTMAS TREE SEASON
Some of the most memorable things about this time of year are the smells that fill the air. Fresh-cut Christmas trees and hand-woven garland are among those amazing smells. The Friday after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year for local Christmas tree growers and Christmas tree retailers. Many garden centers and nurseries bring fresh-cut Christmas trees for the holiday season, seasonal vendors set up shops on busy street corners, and local Christmas tree farms grow trees onsite so that folks can come out to cut their own trees.
What kind of tree should folks choose? With the Christmas tree industry in Louisiana, there are several options. Retail businesses and seasonal vendors purchase trees from outof-state farms and bring them in to sell as Christmas trees. These trees are cut, wrapped, and loaded into climate-controlled trucks and shipped to their destination. ‘Fraser’, ‘Noble’, and ‘Douglas’ fir trees are the top cultivars produced in this type of system. ‘Fraser’ and ‘Douglas’ fir trees have a nice blue-green color, and the needles produce a pleasant fragrance when crushed. ‘Noble’ fir trees have gorgeous shapes and short stiff branches which come in handy when hanging heavier ornaments on the tree. ‘Colorado Blue Spruce’ trees have excellent pyramidal form and beautiful blue-grey needles. Sometimes you might see ‘Scotch Pine’ trees offered as a value-priced option. They are much brighter green when compared to the fir trees.
Local tree farms grow their trees in fields where consumers can pick out the tree they want and have it cut down on-site. The types of trees produced locally are different from what has been previously mentioned. Eastern Red Cedar, a native evergreen to LA, produces a dark shiny green color, natural pyramidal shape, and wonderful aroma. Eastern White Pine produces a bluish-green to silver-green color, good needle retention, and reduced allergic reactions due to the little aroma it produces. Arizona Cypress produces a pale-green to gray-green color, a spherical cone shape, and an aroma that is described as a cross between lemon and mint. The most popular tree species grown on Louisiana Christmas tree farms is the Leyland Cypress. These trees have flat feather-like needles, a dark green to gray color, and little aroma.
The first step in properly caring for a once-living Christmas tree, so that it retains most of its needles and color throughout the season, is by making a fresh cut. Once severed from their root system, the trees lose their ability to effectively take up water and nutrients. Remove ½ inch of the bottom of the tree using a sharp saw or chain saw. This cut is commonly referred to as a “fresh cut” and many businesses may offer to do this for you at no extra charge. This should be done right before you set the tree up in its location. If you have this done on location, aim to go home and immediately bring the tree inside to set up. Add water to the bowl and check it often to keep it full. Don’t worry about nutrient solutions, preservers, and similar types of products. Just keep it full with plain water and you’ll be doing the best you can do to keep those needles on the tree for the remainder of the season.

I am enjoying the cooler temperatures! Even the rain hasn’t bothered me. It is starting to feel like the holidays with the cooler temperatures. And since Thanksgiving is here and the end of November a couple of days away, the end of hurricane season. And hopefully no more disturbances in the Gulf. I think we have had enough of those for this year and several to come. So many people will again be displaced this holiday season. I know exactly how they feel. My prayers are with them.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, I thought I would paint a turkey. Meet Harry the Turkey! I painted him on a 10” round surface. I base coated the surface with Crystal Blue, then dry brushed Turquoise in plaid design, and went with and dry brushed Warm White in between the Turquoise plaid. Traced on the pattern of the turkey, painted the turkey first, then his hat, went on to the feathers, back to the turkey to do the facial features, hat buckle, highlighting, and shading. Finally did the inside of the feathers. This was a really fun piece to paint. Since my granddaughter is home from college for Thanksgiving, this one will look cute hanging on my front door! Hope you all have a very Blessed, Safe, and Happy Thanksgiving! Well, that’s it for this time. What will your next project be?Mine.............I don’t know. But, I know it will be lots of fun. Sincerely, Paula Johnson

with limited house money to hire relativel cheap coaches in baseball, gymnastics, basketball and track and field but not with the generational dollars needed to secure a generational coach. LSU can’t afford another football hiring glitch after Miles, Orgeron and now Kelly. Maybe they need to find another Athletic Director pathfinder to do the job…..or hire a specialist for this hire only, if the school is satisfied with the rest of Woodward’s performance. Great Scott! What has LSU gotten itself into THIS time!?!
GROW GREENS FOR FRESH PRODUCE IN THE WINTER
I love cool-season gardening. It’s a fantastic way to keep enjoying fresh and healthy produce even as the temperatures begin to drop, and days get shorter.
The cooler months are perfect for growing several crops such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, kale, lettuce and spinach. I think lettuce is one of the easiest crops to grow in the fall, winter and spring. It only takes about 20 to 60 days to grow many varieties of lettuce, and they can tolerate frost and light freezing temperatures. Growing lettuce in raised beds or containers is easier than growing it in-ground, which is more traditional. In containers, there is less weed competition and it is easier to harvest.
If you are looking for colorful lettuce to grow, Cherokee lettuce is a great selection. It has thick, medium-sized, reddish-maroon leaves. And unlike many lettuce varieties, it can tolerate warmer temperatures and not develop a bitter taste.
Ideal cos romaine lettuce is another great lettuce to grow. This selection is heat tolerant like Cherokee lettuce, but it also can tolerate frost and light freezing temperatures. Its green, upright foliage makes it a great choice for small gardens or raised beds. Its growth habit makes it a great choice for growing hydroponically.
Mustard and collard greens are two other classic cool-season vegetables for our fall gardens. Both leafy greens also grow well in raised beds and containers where they are more manageable and require less work.
It is surprising how many plants perform well in a small, raised bed or
container. This allows you to enjoy fresh greens even if you only have a small patio, balcony, or sunny kitchen window.
If you like spicy greens, Red Giant mustard greens are for you. The flavor of the big mature leaves is similar to horseradish, while younger leaves usually have a milder flavor.
Red Giant is a colorful, purple-tinted mustard plant with large leaves and a bright green stem. Its purple color intensifies in cool temperatures. This plant matures in 35 to 40 days.
While mustard greens are good, I prefer collard greens for their sweeter flavor.
If you are interested in growing your own, try Top Chop, an excellent collard green with large, wide, smooth leaves. It is known for being very cold hardy. This collard plant usually takes about 74 days to mature. You can grow Top Chop in the fall, winter, and spring.
I’ve just named a few varieties, and there are many other great cool-season vegetables you can grow. Check your local nurseries and garden centers to see what is available in your area.

Well, before a victory against Vanderbilt, things were looking a little rocky in Baton Rouge. However, even though there was a 3-game losing streak and the decommitment of the #1 player in the country, things are not as bad as they seem. Sure, some people were putting all their faith in the hopes that a 17-year-old would be unpacking in Baton Rouge after the first week of December. This reporter had heard things would not end up how everyone had originally planned. Sure, the word is that LSU did not match the final offer that Michigan guaranteed for this player, but I appreciate how the Louisiana State University stood their ground.
The final offer from Baton Rouge ended up being around 7.5 million while Michigan almost doubled that offer with theirs reaching an official total of 12 million. Now keep this in mind, which is a yearly average that would be better than fifty-nine quarterbacks in the NFL! It is more than Brock Purdy who made it to the Super Bowl. That number is a ridiculous amount and now can be maximized for other positions and players on the team. The NIL must eventually have some sort of cap like what the NFL has instituted and the contracts that should end up being more guaranteed!
Would it have been nice for the Bayou Bengals to have another kid of that talent behind the center, YES! But the team already has some guys in the quarterback room that were also 4- or 5-star recruits coming out of high school and if not satisfied can always get someone out of the transfer portal.
Now that we have briefly talked about the National Recruiting issue involving NIL lets go a bit more local and discuss the LHSAA and their sanctions. One week before the end of the regular season for high school football, University High’s football team went from a record of 7-2 to a winless season after the Louisiana High School Athletic Association voided seven of the team’s wins. However, U High appealed that left the association in limbo and more importantly left the playoff brackets a bit discombobulated.
U-High challenged the decision in court and was granted a temporary reprieve, allowing the team to be included in the playoff bracket while the legal dispute played out. However, another Judge’s decision reaffirmed the LHSAA’s authority to enforce its rules. Delaying the release of the playoff brackets, once U-High was temporarily reinstated, it was slated to face Booker T. Washington of New Orleans in the second round of the playoffs. The final judgement removed U-High and made BTW of New Orleans advance to the quarterfinals.
What you haven not heard much about is how the seedings would have been impacted and another team would have had a play off spot had this actually been taken care of when it was first reported or before the playoffs had been seeded. This was a travesty and is a lesson that should definitely be used in the future as to not make things so difficult.
This also is a reminder to schools that keeping up with proper paperwork and watching over transfers to make sure that they are legit reasons for a transfer and not just for athletics. This does nothing but give the schools a bad name and costs them a fine but takes games away from the kids that either would have had the opportunity to win another game in the regular season as long with a potential playoff game. Another issue that comes is how it takes ends up affecting the kids at the school that commits the infraction. A lot of players do the right thing and because of the lack of administration control they get their season swiped from right underneath them and poof their season is over.
This is sure to be a hot issue for the rest of the season and should definitely be something that is discussed at the administration meetings during the spring and summer. At least, the LHSAA took care of this quickly before an even bigger disaster with the playoffs moving back a few weeks and the state championships having a different homefield than the Superdome. You talk about what kind of uproar there might have been if that had been the case?
We will have great representation, no matter what teams will be in the state championships and you will be able to find live updates for most of the games on our social media handles as we look forward to another great LHSAA event at the Caesars’ Superdome!

KUDZU BUGS
With the onset of cooler temperatures, kudzu bugs are leaving fields and kud-zu patches to seek overwintering sites. Their numbers are higher than ever this year and this has resulted in large concentrations of adults on non-legume plants in home and commercial landscapes.

This is prompting calls from clients who are concerned that the bugs are damaging these plants. Sometimes bugs are stacked more than one layer thick, and it is understandable that clients would be concerned about such large numbers of insects. Fortunately, kudzu bugs do not seem to cause serious damage by this behavior and treatment is usually not needed to protect plants this late in the year.
The nuisance effect of having this large number of bugs flying around is another question, especially if bugs are concentrating on plants around patios, doorways or porches. In cases where treatment is desired, spraying with a pyrethroid insecticide (bifenthrin, permethrin, cyfluthrin, cyhalothrin) that is labeled for use on the plants being treated will kill a lot of kudzu bugs (Ortho Bug B Gon Insect Killer for Lawns and Gardens Concentrate and Hi-Yield Lawn, Garden, Pet & Livestock Insect Control concentrate are two examples), although it may not complete-ly eliminate the problem because of continued migration of new bugs.
Kudzu bugs accumulating on the outsides of buildings and invading the insides of buildings in search of a place to overwinter is a much greater problem. Although kudzu bugs are susceptible to pyrethroid insecticides, such as bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, cyhalothrin, or permethrin, good proactive physical exclusion is the best defense against this problem, and clients should be encouraged to spend most of their time and money on making buildings bug-proof, rather than on insecticide sprays. Spraying exterior surfaces of buildings with a pyrethroid insecticide that is labeled for such use (Bayer Ad-vanced Carpenter Ant and Termite Killer Plus Concentrate and Hi-Yield Lawn, Garden, Pet & Livestock Insect Control concentrate are two examples) can help reduce numbers of bugs resting on building exteriors, but, without having the physical exclusion in place, large numbers of bugs will still get inside if the building is experiencing heavy kudzu bug activity. -0-

KEEPING YOUR PETS SAFE THIS THANKSGIVING: TIPS FROM THE LOUISIANA SPCA
Who doesn’t love the sweet smell of a freshly baked pumpkin pie or the savory aroma of deep-fried turkey right out of the oven? Mmm, it sounds yummy, doesn’t it? —And if you have furry, four-legged family members at home, we’re sure their eyes will be wide, and their mouths will be watering this holiday as well. Here are some valuable tips from your friends at the Louisiana SPCA to ensure a safe and happy Thanksgiving for your pets this season.
When shopping this holiday, consider purchasing pet-safe treats from local authorized pet suppliers such as PetSmart, Petco, Jefferson Feed, Walmart, and Target. These stores offer a variety of delicious treats and meals made with healthy ingredients for your pet can be festive and provide vital nutritional benefits.
We highly recommend selecting items that have the following ingredients: raw bones, boiled unseasoned meats (chicken or turkey), purees/broths, fresh vegetables such as steamed green beans or carrots, and certain fruits like uncooked apples or cranberries can make great treats or food toppers to your pet’s regular meal regiment.
Another fun suggestion we like to do at the LASPCA is making Thanksgiving Pet Popsicles. Here is how we make them—Fill a cupcake tray, three-fourths of the way, with chicken broth. After filling the tray, add some plain steamed green beans or carrots, pieces of turkey, and some pumpkin puree then put this mixture into the freezer for a few hours until ready to serve. These treats are great for helping pets who may get anxious or overwhelmed by the constant sound of a ringing doorbell or multiple guests entering the house.
While this time of year is filled with delicious food and family gatherings, it’s essential to remember that some holiday traditions can pose risks to our furry friends. Any pre-cooked meals or desserts containing ingredients such as onions, salt, sugar, chocolate, cooked bones, bread dough, grapes, raisins, and butter should be strictly avoided as they can cause a range of health issues, from digestive upset to lifethreatening toxicity.
If your pet consumes any of these ingredients and showcases the key signs of food poisoning in pets, which can include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, coughing, or nausea, contact a veterinarian immediately. A quick internet search on your phone or tablet can put you in touch with local 24-hour animal clinics near you open on Thanksgiving Day.
One of the simplest ways to protect your pets during Thanksgiving is by supervising them closely and keeping them and their eating bowls away from potentially dangerous areas, such as the kitchen stove or open trash bins.
By taking precautions, offering safe treats, and knowing what to do in an emergency, you can ensure this Thanksgiving is a safe one for you and your furry companions!

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.

Kitten season is lasting well into fall this year, making it difficult for cat rescuers and shelters to keep up. Cats that have not been spayed or neutered are being abandoned everywhere at an alarming rate. In some cases, pregnant cats are abandoned because their owners don’t want to deal with the kittens. Why, then, did they not get the cat spayed? The surgery is too expensive for some pet owners, but with low cost and even FREE programs available, not being able to afford it is no longer a valid reason to not spay and neuter. It comes down to caring, to taking responsibility, to asking for help if a pet owner needs it. Contact your local shelter or rescue organization if you or someone you know needs help getting their cat or dog spayed or neutered. Help is available.
